Next comes the Caribbean Georgian and Victorian architecture of Basseterre, Saint Kitts, followed by Roseau, the capital of Dominica, with its lively markets and easy access to beautiful national parks. The glamorous boutiques and restaurants of Gustavia, St. Barts, beckon next, and then it’s time to don some flippers for underwater marvels in the crystal-clear waters of Tortola, where we call at Road Town. Summertime and the living is easy on this laid-back sailing down the coast from Canada to the southernmost tip of California. Leaving cosmopolitan Vancouver behind, we have one more Canadian city to discover before heading for U.S. waters. Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is known as the garden city for its abundant parkland and dazzling floral displays, making for a pleasant day exploring. Then it’s on to Astoria, Oregon, a historic city (the oldest west of the Rockies) with a charming forest setting on the Columbia River that has been captured in many a Hollywood movie. After a day at sea enjoying all the comforts on board, we sail into San Francisco, to be greeted by the beautiful panorama of the Golden Gate Bridge arching over the glittering bay. More of Mexico awaits as we move on to Manzanillo, once used by trading ships as a shelter from pirates, and Zihuatanejo, where dolphins and turtles play in the waves. A day at sea takes us to Acajutla in El Salvador – be sure to try a coffee from one of the country’s famous plantations – and then tick off another Central American country, Nicaragua, at San Juan del Sur, known for its impressive surfing beaches. Costa Rica comes into view at Puntarenas, where there is seafood to dine on and nature to admire inland.
