INTERNATIONAL ‘WITHIN BREED’ GRAPHS BREEDING VALUES FOR NEW ZEALAND BULLS New Zealand breeding values and Indexes for bulls are calculated by NZ Animal Evaluation Unit on behalf of NZ Animal Evaluation Limited (NZAEL), the publisher of the information.

In NZ, animals are evaluated on an across-breed basis, with the base being the average 2000-born cow. The base animal has breeding values (BVs) of zero for all traits and indexes of zero. NZAEL also publishes within-breed average breeding values and indexes for dairy cattle.

In its International Catalogues, CRV AmBreed publishes within-breed breeding values and indexes for its bulls in order to show ther relative performance against sires of its own breed.

Because we use an across breed base in New Zealand, the resulting bull graphs can be confusing for our overseas clients who are not familiar with this concept.

We believe the best and fairest way to present bulls to our international markets is to create graphs based on the same base year but within breed for all traits - and not to confuse clients by mixing within- and across-breed traits on the same graph.

As you can see from the table on this page, the base cow for acrossbreed evaulation has BVs of zero for all traits as you would expect.

You will note that Jerseys and Friesians deviate from this across -breed base in a number of key areas.

The 2000 cow on the Friesian base produces 498 litres of milk more than the average 200-born cow on the acrossbreed base - and the 2000-base Jersey cow produces 702 litres less than the across breed base cow.

We will continue to make both graphs available; Standard graphs using the 2000 across breed base as published on the AEU website and ‘within breed’ graphs which we will supply on demand. THE COW OF 2015

With scientists, we developed an index which would breed towards ‘Cow 2015’.

This index was named:

New Zealand Merit Index (NZMI) Attributes of ‘Cow 2015’ • • • • •

Efficency producer of a high-value milk Long-lasting (>4.3 lactations per cow) Good shed traits Fertile Strong udders

ANIMAL EVAULATION BREEDING VALUES For each trait that is measured on an animal an estimate of the animal’s genetic value (breeding value or BV) is calculated.

This is done using an animal model which takes account of difference in age, season of calving, induction and environment by comparing animals in similar contemporary groups (like groups).

These non-genetic effects are taken account of so the breeding value of an animal can be more accurately estimated for each trait. In calculating breeding values the animal model uses information from relatives (ancestry and progeny) as well as from the animal’s own records.

The base cow that NZ Animal Evaluation uses to compare all traits is the average 2000 born cow.

The breeding values shown for all cows and bulls are deviations above (+) or below (–) the base 2000 born cow. All breeds of cows can be compared on this base because no distinction is made for breed, although hybrid vigor is adjusted for.

MILK PRODUCTION TRAITS From 17/2/2007 Test Day Model (TDM) methodology has been used by NZAEL to estimate BV’s for Protein, Fat and Milk yields. TDM more accurately predicts BV’s for these traits. TDM better accounts than the previous method for lactation persistency and cow maturity.

For many bulls there is little difference between BV’s calculated using the previous method and TDM BV’s. However, some bulls change significantly either upwards or downwards.

Preliminary analyses show CRV Ambreed’s bulls to fare well from the introduction of the TDM – this is in line with our philosophy of breeding persistent, long-life cows which tend to be later maturing but produce much better in their fourth and later lactations compared to their first lactation.

TRAITS OTHER THAN PRODUCTION New Zealand’s Traits Other than Production (TOP) evaluation system has been used since 1985.

In the accompanying table is a description for each trait. If you would like to know more detail about TOP, there is an excellent booklet available from CRV Ambreed which has been published by the Advisory Committee on TOP. Sires are evaluated for Traits Other than Production daughter inspection.

Four Management Traits (farmer traits) are evaluated using information provided by farmers participating in CRV Ambreed’s Progeny Test programme.

TRAITS OTHER THAN PRODUCTION GLOSSARY Trait (Optimal direction) Description Adaptability to Milking (Positive) How soon the cow settles into the milking routine after calving. Range is slowly to quickly.

Shed Temperament (Positive) The temperament of the cow in the shed while being handled and milked. Range is vicious to placid.

Milking Speed (Positive) The time from cups on to the time milk flow stops. Range is slow to fast.

Overall Opinion (Positive) The farmer’s overall acceptance of the animal as a herd member. Range is undesirable to desirable.

Below & to the right are the twelve Conformation traits that are evaluated by TOP inspectors Stature (Medium)

Describes the height of a cow at the shoulders. This trait is measured across breed, which results in all Jerseys being negative on the bar graph. Ayrshires being intermediate and Friesians being mainly positive.

Capacity (Positive) Combination of strength and depth of chest and body as viewed from side, rear and front in relation to the physical size of the cow.

Rump Angle (Zero) Describes the angle between the centre of the hips and the top of the pins. A low value indicates the cow has high pins and a high value indicates the cow has low pins. A value close to zero describes a flat rump which is optimal.

Rump Width (Positive) Width of pins, hips and thurls. This trait is a good predictor of the width a cow has throughout her body.

Legs (Negative to Zero) Measures the leg set while the cow is standing. A negative value indicates a straight leg, whilst a positive value indicates a sickled or curved leg set.

Udder Support (Positive) Combination of both depth of udder and strength of the suspensory ligament as viewed from the rear and the side. Udder support is a very important trait in determining the number of lactations a cow’s udder will survive.

Front Udder (Positive) Measures the attachment and length of the fore udder.

Rear Udder (Positive) Combination of both rear udder height and width.

Front Teat Placement (Positive) The placement of the front teats relative to the centre of the quarter. Low BV’s indicate wide front teats, whilst high BV’s indicate close front teats. Close front teat placement is important for preventing cup slip and mastitis through rubbing against the inside of the leg.

Rear Teat Placement (Neg. to Zero) The placement of the rear teats relative to the centre of the quarter. The optimal placement is wide (ie Negative) so as to make milk cup attachment easy. There is a problem though in selecting for negative teat placement as more often than not these animals have poor udder support.

Udder Overall (Positive) The inspector gives an overall score of the udder including any other udder traits not measured before. Udder Overall score can be used to simply compare the udder quality of bull’s daughters.

Dairy Conformation (Positive) An overall conformation score for all traits except udder traits.

Dairy Conformation is a useful trait for simply comparing animals for dairy type.
