“All over the world this Gospel is bearing fruit and growing…” reported Paul to the Christians at Colossae (Colossians 1:6). This was an announcement of God’s grace shown in Jesus, “for He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:14).

Paul’s reporting of the Gospel’s spread is all the more significant when we understand that Paul himself was under arrest for being its messenger. Forceful opposition didn’t surprise him and even that could not stop the advancement of God’s kingdom.

The story of Crusaders in 2015 was a story of God’s Spirit continuing to transform lives as the Gospel, advanced by your prayers and sacrifice, bore fruit. This Annual Report shares the awesome news of our biggest ever number of young people hearing about Jesus on camps and through our school programs. It also highlights our entry into Western Australia with eight school groups up and running and our first CRUWest Study Camp! Praise God that the Good News of Jesus is spreading fast and lives have been changed for God’s glory.

Our newspapers remind us that there is opposition to the sharing of the Gospel, just as Jesus warned and Paul experienced. In the last year, we have seen campaigns directed against Christian ministry in

schools. Yet these have not limited our impact – God’s work is unstoppable!

We are excited to share that Crusaders’ ministry has not just grown bigger, but deeper too. In 2015, Crusaders trained more students and leaders than ever before, increased the frequency of visits to schools, and saw many more groups from Australia and overseas using CRU resources. Platforms have been laid for future growth and we eagerly await fruitful outcomes.

We have five key areas of focus for Crusaders in 2016: 1. being true to the Bible as the Word of God 2. being passionately, unashamedly Gospel-focused 3. being driven to see our impact increase with excellence 4. being prayerfully dependent on God to bring about real and lasting change 5. and being selflessly committed to the care and development of individuals.

My favourite moments are when a camper suddenly realises something so ground-breaking and so mind-boggling that they light up, and it’s like they’ve found the meaning of life. Often they have!

I’m a mum of three boys who love going on Crusader Camps. Our oldest son, Campbell, went to his first CRU Camp in the summer of 2012.

He loved it and has been to a CRU sailing camp every year since. He’s just completed his fourth camp over the 2015/16 summer season.

For the most recent sailing camp, the Lord gave me the idea of emailing a few of the Year 8 mums, to let them

know Campbell was going on Sail Mania. At least ten Year 8 boys from his school signed up – it was so exciting!

I pray for Crusaders because I believe God reveals Himself to kids through Crusaders. Crusaders provides safe, friendly, relaxed and happy environments for kids to learn about Jesus!

I became a Christian when I was 12 at the 1959 Billy Graham Crusade. While I was at school, I wasn’t a regular churchgoer, so my Crusader Group was very important for my early Christian life. My three daughters also said that Crusaders was very important for them when they were at school.

I am blessed that, over 50 years after leaving school, I am still able to go on CRU Camps to assist with the sailing programs and see the great work being done under God. I give to Crusaders so that the Gospel can continue to be shared with as many young people as possible.

We’re so thankful to God for this past year and we pray that He will continue His amazing work through this ministry in 2016.

Summit’s ministry has been greatly blessed! In 2015, you helped Summit run more camps than ever before, for more campers than ever before.

Your support transformed Emma from a shy girl to a bold young evangelist!

The most exciting number, though, is that 548 campers gave their lives to Jesus or asked for a Bible, a devotional resource, or some further information about Christianity. Indeed a massive 75% of campers left saying they understood more about God and grew in their faith during camp. Furthermore, 47% said they would now like to attend a church, youth group or CRU lunchtime group to learn more. This is remarkable given the wide variety of secular and faith backgrounds of the children attending Summit Camps. Praise God!

As well as ministering to campers, Summit invests in the lives of the next generation of Gospel workers through the ‘Ian Holt Memorial Fellowship’ training program. One recent 'Fellow', Emma Bennett, reflects:

Summit Camps aim to holistically develop young people physically, emotionally, academically and spiritually. In 2015 we focused on deepening our relationships with schools to create adaptive and relevant programs so that campers were both more effectively reached with the Gospel and also to maximise educational outcomes.

Some highlights included running camps for the first time for MLC and Eagle Arts Vocational College, plus additional programs for some schools with a long term Summit partnership.

Summit has equipped me in so many ways to lead and share the Gospel. When I started, I was a very different person. I was quiet and shy and found leading quite scary. However, through a variety of training sessions my leadership skills have developed significantly. I have now led on over 100 Summit School Camps. One of the highlights from my time was helping a boy called Caleb comprehend God’s purpose for him for the first time! I was able to chat to him and pass on Bible verses to help him understand. His response was incredible – he said, ‘Thank you so much! My whole life I have wanted to know why God created me and you are the only person who has been able to answer!’ I praise God for all the amazing conversations that camp enables us to have with kids!

Canberra school on fire for Christ!

Through your generous support, Crusaders is working in partnership with schools, like Trinity Christian School in Canberra, to share the Gospel with students. Recently Trinity brought all of their Year 5 students away on a Crusaders' Summit Educational Camp. Some students were so impacted by the Bible talks and discussion groups that they have started attending the Trinity school CRU Group at lunchtime to learn more about Jesus. Read how two Trinity teachers describe the impact of CRU in their school!

Summit Camp had a profound impact on our students The Summit Camp team were absolutely exceptional. The Summit leaders had a profound impact on our students’ lives and their walk with the Lord. The leaders were young, they were enthusiastic and they really showed what Jesus’ love can look like in a tangible way. Lives were changed on Summit Camp!

I have a student in my class, Tyler, who really enjoyed camp. He is from a non-Christian home but he heard about Jesus on Summit Camp and understands that Jesus really loves him. This prompted him to bring along his pocket money to the school book fair and purchase his very first Bible. He is asking so many questions of his teachers and his friends, plus he is now going to our CRU Group at lunchtimes to learn more about his new faith. It is so exciting to see God transforming his life!

Reaching children from Buddhist to Baptist backgrounds I run the CRU lunchtime group with two other teachers. We get kids from Buddhist backgrounds, non-Christian backgrounds, as well as kids who have been to church all their lives. It’s a complete mix and we love it!

work in Schools You helped students at 186 schools hear about Jesus In 1930 Crusaders’ founder, Howard Guinness, said: Our first target is the schools, the place in which to confront students with the living Christ before their attitudes harden and spiritual truths are rejected in the name of reason or expediency.

In an era of increasing pressure on school-based ministry, Crusaders provides key support for 186 schools, most of whom have Christian lunchtime CRU Groups meeting each week. Currently, there are no restrictions placed on these groups meeting in the Independent School sector, and we are taking full advantage of this to seize every opportunity for Gospel ministry.

We praise God for the opportunities our staff had to visit schools on almost 1,000 occasions in 2015. That’s more than five school visits every day of every school term!

Each visit provides an opportunity to share a Bible talk with students, and support teachers in their Christian witness at school.

Teachers and chaplains greatly appreciate having a CRU staff member Students (above) at CrossTrain come regularly to their Leadership Camp school to support them in prayer, give talks and help them out. Kylie Zietsch from William Clarke College recently shared, It is always a blessing to have Mark from CRU visit us. He encourages both the students and myself to draw closer to God. I really value his support.

UNSTOPPABLE WORK ON CRU CAMPS You helped over 3,600 CRU campers hear the Gospel I praise God that in 2015, with your support, a record 3,675 campers experienced God’s love in action and heard the great news of Jesus on 74 residential CRU Holiday Camps and non-residential Day Camps!

As the number of children and youth attending churches in our society falls, I’m so thankful that over 2,000 campers who don’t attend church or regard themselves as Christians came on CRU Camps in 2015.

Praise God that 12% of these campers indicated they now trust Jesus or have recommitted their lives to Him, plus many more have committed to start attending churches, youth groups or CRU Groups in schools. Strategic new camps like Master Chef and QLD Mania were filled with firsttime campers, and the expanded Galston site allowed for further growth in study camps. I praise God for opportunities that new camps allowed for leaders to connect deeply with more kids, listening, mentoring, answering questions and showing the impact of Jesus in their lives.

Thank you so much for your support to enable these campers to hear the message of Jesus – the best news of all!

We are very excited about the future of CRU Camps.

In 2016, we hope to see 4,000 CRU Campers on nearly 80 Holiday and Day Camps, including a new creative arts camp. You Helped Jasmine

Shine

When Jasmine was in Year 7, she lost people who were very close to her. Jasmine wasn’t sure if God existed but she thought that, if He did, she wanted nothing to do with Him. She was angry and hurting.

Jasmine was overjoyed when two girls, Claire and Georgia, who do not usually go to church, responded to what they heard about Jesus.

Then, in Year 8, Jasmine was invited to a camp being organised by her school CRU Group. It was on this camp that Jasmine heard about God’s love for her through Jesus and she took her first steps in following Him.

Claire says, I decided to join God’s side because Jesus died so that we can be friends with God.

A year later, Jasmine was encouraged to go to CRU’s CrossTrain camp, which helps young Christians step up to leadership. Jasmine remembers…

On the last night we were all in a circle, worshipping and praying to God. It was in this moment that I felt in my heart God’s joy, security and love. I felt God’s presence within me. He was speaking to me, showing me how strong His love is for me, and how I needed to shine His light through everything I do.

Georgia adds, I have started going to CRU Group at Friday lunch, and I want to keep learning more about God. Reflecting on her own growth as a Christian and how God has used her to impact others, Jasmine says, Crusaders has helped me find faith, grow in holiness, stand firm when times are tough and equipped me to reach others for Christ. I’m so thankful that Crusaders helps kids like me, Claire and Georgia to know Christ and share Him with others.

Marilla’s Mystery: ARE YOU THE VOLUNTEER LEADER THAT CHANGED HER LIFE AT GALSTON GORGE?

In 1970, Marilla Brackenreg (nee Knowles) became a boarder at Ravenswood. A friend (who was an atheist!) suggested she attend a Crusader Camp at Galston Gorge to escape the boarding house for the weekend. For Marilla, the ‘escape’ became a turning point in her life. She shares…

I’d grown up in a very moral church-going family, but I didn’t have a personal relationship with God. One night, my leader stood in the doorway of our room and shared the Gospel. It was as if God was opening my eyes to the truth for the first time. The leader said that when she prayed to God, she felt Jesus was sitting right there with her.

I never knew you could have such a wonderful relationship with God, and that night, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour!

The next morning Marilla knew something amazing had happened but was too shy to share her wonderful news. So this leader never knew of Marilla’s decision to become a Christian. Over the years, God has brought many blessings and miracles into Marilla’s life and those around her. And

now, even though it’s many years later, Marilla is determined to find the leader who faithfully shared her testimony and changed her life forever to let her know the impact of her testimony. Marilla’s story from 45 years ago is a powerful testimony of the impact that volunteer leaders have on young people as they faithfully share their love for Christ.

It’s also an important reminder of the need for great campsites. Over many decades the Galston Gorge Conference & Recreation Centre and Lake Mac Outdoor Recreation Centre have played a huge part in helping thousands of people like Marilla come to know the love of Christ.

BUILDING So far hundreds of excited guests, including HSC Study Campers who would have otherwise been on waiting lists, have loved using our newly renovated Lyrebird accommodation and new meeting room at Galston.

Sleeping 30 people and with theatre-quality audio visual, Lyrebird makes a great location for smaller groups on retreat at our Galston Gorge site.

We’ve also been making changes at Lake Mac, with a new Teachers Accommodation building installed in November. This new facility has been custom-designed to provide self-contained accommodation for eight teachers attending Summit Educational Camps and provides the private amenities that teachers have been requesting for some time.

Within the community is the New College Christian Fellowship (NCCF), a group of Christians coming from various church backgrounds as well as people investigating Christianity. Each year, they hold events aimed at growing people in their knowledge and understanding of God and encouraging each other to grow in Christ.

God’s provision and timing are above reproach and He has blessed the ministry of Crusaders in 2015.

MARKETING & FUNDRAISING Our 85th year was full of blessing! Record numbers of campers heard the truth about Jesus and accepted him as Lord. Study Camps were launched in Western Australia. Record numbers of school visits took place and more students than ever before were exposed to the hope and meaning Jesus brings. Praise God! Behind all the projects and programs which facilitated these records, were kids like Caitlyn, who said “I didn’t know what Christianity really meant and how important God is to me. Thank you for making me realise that God will always love me no matter what happens.” It’s statements like these that fuel our labour in the Lord!

Other highlights for the fundraising and marketing team this year included gaining approval from the ATO for two new tax deductible funds, the receipt of a large bequest and the amazing generosity of supporters at our events and appeals.

We are especially grateful to all those who helped a disadvantaged child experience a CRU Camp over the course of the year and were delighted to enable hundreds of extra students to attend Study Camps because of the generosity of donors in funding new accommodation at the Galston campsite.

We are also thankful to the many foundations who funded a variety of initiatives throughout the year.

One of these enabled the development of the ‘Howard Guinness Leadership Trust’, a new funding vehicle which allows donors to give in perpetuity so that Crusaders leadership might remain faithful and steadfast in the long term.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to the financial, prayer and volunteer supporters who walked alongside us in 2015, helping kids come to know and love Jesus. Thank you. It is a privilege to serve with you in this bountiful harvest field.

ADMINISTRATION & IT Building upon the implementation of major IT systems in 2014, 2015 has been a period of consolidation and enhancement of these systems as our familiarity with them grew. A new feature has also been rolled out which will streamline the online donation administration process.

It is encouraging to see staff learn new skills and adapt to changing processes which has led to increased productivity. An example of this is the new online system for “special meals” which helps us cater to the needs of campers who have allergies to various foods.

The Finance team farewelled Eric De Beer late in 2015 when he retired. Eric has served God faithfully and seen much change over his 15 years at Crusaders. We pray that God continues to use him and that he enjoys spending extra time with his family.
