ADVANCING THE NAME OF JESUS Dear Friend, The foundation stone of the early church was their witness to the crucified, resurrected and ascended Jesus – as “salvation is found in no one else” (Acts 4:12). “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship” (2:42), they showed great generosity in sharing their wealth (2:44-45), and “the Lord added to their number daily” (2:47). We thank God that we too are witnesses to Him, sharing the timeless, life-saving message of Jesus some two thousand years later. We rejoiced as hundreds of school students told us they have accepted God’s forgiveness and many more are growing in their relationship with Him! In this special Annual Report edition of CRUView, you will find exciting stories of deepened friendships and faith commitments, of perseverance and of growth. We have been particularly encouraged by students who have returned home from camp and shared the good news of Jesus with their families. We are also excited to share news of our first three Day Camps – holiday camp programs where children don’t stay overnight, but spend the day enjoying Christian community. Additionally, 2013 saw over 100 Summit Camps run – our largest number ever! A record number of schools were supported with more frequent visits. Plus more campers were involved and more young people mobilised and equipped to lead. There was also
growth in the number of young people being trained in ministry, namely through the new ‘Schools Ministry Associate’ and ‘CRU Camps Intern’ programs. Thank you for generously enabling all this to happen through your prayers, gifts and hard work. We praise God for those who have been praying for and supporting Crusaders for over 80 years, as well as for those who have just become involved in recent months. We are so thankful to you all. Thank God for what He is doing through His Spirit in Australian schools today. Please pray that we would continue to be bold in sharing the great news of Jesus, and that the word of God will continue to increase and spread (Acts 2:24). Pray that lives will be transformed; communities strengthened; and that God’s name will be honoured.

CRUSADERS IS A BIBLE-BASED, INTERDENOMINATIONAL CHRISTIAN YOUTH ORGANISATION. Through the faithfulness of God and the vision and resources given to generations of Christians, Crusaders has shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ with hundreds of thousands of Australian school students since 1930. Our three core ministries – CRU Camps, Summit Educational Camps and Schools Ministry – are funded through income from our camps, centres and the generosity of supporters, trusts and foundations.

reaching campers who won’t attend other sports and activity based camps.
“Jesus died on the cross for us and because of camp I now realise the immense significance that this merits,” said Josh, one of our autumn study campers. He was one of 3 147 kids who attended CRU Camps in 2013 and heard the great news of Jesus. That’s over 500 more than five years ago!
2013 also saw a new CRU Camps Ministry Intern program launch with two young adult interns. In addition to training the interns for holiday camping ministry, this initiative is strengthening follow up for campers, identifying and mentoring new volunteer directors, increasing targeted leader recruitment and supporting our training programs for leaders and junior leaders.
Camper surveys showed that 60% of kids, like Josh, did not regard themselves as Christians or attend church programs before camp. How wonderful is it that 20% of these campers indicated that they decided to follow Christ or recommitted their lives to Him on camp! As well as this, many campers said that now they were willing to start attending churches, youth groups or CRU Groups. “CRU has changed my life forever. I met heaps of new friends. Thank God for his provision of passionate, capable and willing volunteers to run each camp, for the work of the CRU Camps team who organise the logistics and train volunteers… and for the generosity of supporters like you who helped ensure our teams and camps had everything needed – from equipment, to training, insurance and sponsorship for disadvantaged campers.
In 2013 our newer and more specialised camps saw significant growth. CRUTech, for example, focuses on computing and robotics and is particularly effective in

Praise God for His providence with the 2013 launch of CRU Day Camps! These multi-day, non-residential school holiday programs are run in partnership with schools and churches. In 2013, three Day Camps with 55 kids were run. Parents, churches and schools are excited about this new initiative and are keen to be involved. Our end of camp surveys showed that 98% of campers understood more about God as a result of camp! Thank God for the wonderful leaders who made each Day Camp a special experience.

Summit’s
biggest YEAR YET 7 127 students heard how much they are loved by God and were challenged to live for Him on Summit Educational Camps in 2013 – our biggest year yet! We thank God for the privilege of ministering to campers from pre-school age, right up to senior high students and from schools in Scone, Bathurst and Canberra and everywhere in between. As well as running camps for a range of independent schools, we loved sharing the Gospel and conducting the kids’ programs on four camps for a foster carers’ support group, and the biennial Claremont College ‘Dads and Kids Camp’ (featured on page 8). It was also a pleasure to introduce a handful of new styles of camps focusing on particular areas of interest, including a creative writing camp and social justice camp.

renewed its Registered Training Organisation (RTO) status with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA). This means that we deliver nationally accredited training and certification in Outdoor Recreation, Bronze Medallion and First Aid to staff and volunteers, so that they can run safe activities whilst sharing the love of Christ with campers.

In my younger years at middle school, I only had a vague understanding about God. I didn’t get what it meant to follow God and to know him personally. But, after witnessing an accident, and being confronted ZLWK KRZ ÀHHWLQJ OLIH FDQ EH , ZDV FKDOOHQJHG WR PDNH a decision about my faith and live my whole life for Jesus. Right then, I realised that this Good News had to be shared! At that time, my school didn’t have any CRU Groups where kids could meet at lunchtime and learn about Jesus. And so I felt called by God to get one started. In Year 8, I started a lunchtime group thanks to the help of Di Collins, a Schools Ministry worker at Crusaders, who mentored me and taught me how to run the group faithfully. At the beginning, I was uncertain of what to do, so I would pray and say to God, 'You tell, I'll do' and He always came through! Now, each week I gather together with other students to hear the word of God and share in fellowship.
Three years later we’ve really grown with 45 students coming along to our middle school and senior school groups. I think part of the reason for this growth is the training I’ve received on Crusader Leadership Camps like ‘CrossTrain’. On these annual camps I’ve learnt how to run lunchtime groups in a God honouring way and how to write bible talks and disciple my peers. These camps also connected me with friends and strong Christian leaders from other schools, who are constantly praying for us and have helped me grow tremendously in my own personal walk with God. As I’ve moved into senior school I’ve seen more and more how my peers are being sucked into worldly temptations and forming negative attitudes towards God. This motivated me to start a CRU Group in the junior school so that these students could hear about Jesus at a young age before they get caught up in lifestyles that make it hard to live God’s way. We started meeting in 2013 and, excitingly, a large number of the students coming along to the group each week are from non-Christian homes. It’s been a great privilege to answer their searching questions as we’ve studied the Bible together.

100 000 kids ATTEND Schools Ministry EVENTS
We praise God for the many stories in 2013 of students coming to know Jesus and growing in their faith through school CRU Groups. It is a vital ministry that is bearing much fruit. Our six full-time Schools Ministry staff helped establish 27 new CRU Groups across NSW and Canberra in 2013. There are now 175 CRU Groups meeting each week in independent and Christian schools within a three hour radius of Sydney. With your support, our team has made 867 visits to schools, giving talks in assemblies and at CRU Groups, praying regularly with and for Christians in these schools and writing Bible resources. Thank God for the many Christian teachers, chaplains and student leaders who graciously serve every week by running these groups in schools and for the prayer and financial support of many others. It was exciting to see over 600 students attend after school Inter-CRU events in 2013. These events draw high school students together to encourage each other about what God is doing in their schools and to spur one another on to stand firm for Jesus amongst the
temptations, distractions and opposition they face as Christian teenagers at school. “My CRU Group has helped me grow and encouraged me to stand up for Jesus at school by connecting me with other Christians.” Emma, Tara Anglican School for Girls Another absolute delight was the opportunity to train young leaders at 16 FIT, CrossTrain and Recharge events. We praise God for many testimonies like Helen from Abbotsleigh, who said “I have learnt how to be an encouraging leader who has a genuine care for those I lead and to be an example of someone who knows they need Jesus.” In 2014, we will continue to work together with teachers and chaplains to share the message of Jesus in Independent schools in NSW and the ACT. We are excited about connecting, supporting and growing the CRU Group ministry. By increasing the number of Schools Ministry Associates to four, we look forward to more opportunities to disciple young people and strengthen the connection between CRU Groups, CRU Holiday Camps and Summit Educational Camps.

GALSTON GORGE When Dr Paul White and Dr Leslie Parr gifted Crusaders with land at Galston Gorge and Lake Macquarie, they had a bold vision to reach boys and girls with the love of Christ. In 2013 we saw that vision carried out yet again with 18 165 campers enjoying God’s creation and Christian hospitality at the two sites. Thanks to the gifts of many faithful supporters like you, we were able to make a number of improvements over the year. At Galston these included new audio visual equipment for the Eaglesview and Valleyview conference rooms, improved safety for maintenance staff on the roofs and beginning the upgrade of wheelchair friendly bathrooms. At Lake Mac, urgently needed new boys’ bathrooms were installed as well as repairs to the climbing tower. One camp to benefit from these new facilities at Lake Mac was the Claremont College ‘Dads and Kids Camp’ with 274 campers (105 dads, 149 kids,

4 teachers & 16 Summit Leaders) – our biggest camp of the year! Filled with sailing, canoeing, raft building, 50-a-side soccer and even a dance competition, it was wonderful to see kids and dads having an adventure together as they enjoyed God’s beautiful creation. In a world where relationship breakdown is all too common, Principal Doug Thomas, said he “loved to see the smiles on everyone’s faces as they enjoyed many special father and child moments.” So powerful was the experience that one father even wrote to Doug saying: “this camp was perhaps my most significant moment as a father, since the birth of my children.” It was a privilege and a pleasure to be a part of this camp and those of many other churches, schools and community groups over 2013. Thank you for helping keep these special places in good condition so that groups can come away to consider the claims of Christ, grow in faith and enjoy fellowship together.

Praise God for His faithfulness in providing for the ministry of Crusaders for over 80 years. It is an honour and a privilege to be able to spend our time sharing the good news of Jesus and we thank God for your ongoing generosity, which makes all this possible. Around 80% of Crusaders’ total revenue is generated from our camps, campsites and other activities. The remaining 20% is generously provided by supporters and foundations investing in our ministry and facilities.
