I discovered that ministry is less about you, and more about your willingness to find out who other people are, and where they’re at.

years ago, Tim Watson had just finished an arts degree. He was also studying law, but was not sure law was for him. Ministry or teaching were both careers he considered, and so, to get some experience with both, he decided to become a CRU® Summit Fellow. Being a Summit Fellow involves formal education (Fellows work towards a Certificate III in Outdoor Education) but it is much more than that. Summit provides trainees with the opportunity to experience ministry in an intense, practical way, serving on school camps. Looking back at his time in Summit, Tim recognises that the things he learned and experienced in those two years still impact him today. “Summit prepared me with a focus on people,” he remembers. “Yes, there were the outdoor education skills, like the ability to do a bit of rock climbing or abseiling, but more importantly it was the relational, interactive, human elements that mattered most to me. I had the opportunity to learn how to… interact with the people in front of me and make them the focus.” This theme of relationships characterised Tim’s Summit experience. “I discovered that ministry is less about you, and more about your willingness to find out who other people are, and where they’re at. I think before Summit, I felt that if I just had all the right answers, if I developed particular skills, then it would all work! But actually, it’s all about getting to know people. Sure, it’s important to know how you might navigate a tricky conversation! But predominantly, it’s about getting to know people and then talking naturally about Christian things in that context. I had plenty of opportunities to find that out while on hikes and doing activities on camps.” Tim knows that building relationships is crucial to effective evangelism, because our Lord is relational. During his time in Summit, he recalls, “I can think of many kids who told me, ‘I’d always thought Christianity was about what I do, not about a relationship’. So moving them to a point where they

could understand it was about a relationship was very liberating for them. The shackles of religion fell off.” For Tim, Summit was a life-changing two years. He recalls now, “It confirmed that I wanted to be involved in full-time ministry, and it just so happened that my ministry was going to be in schools.” Following Summit, Tim pursued jobs in schools, and eventually became a teacher of Christian Studies and History. Later, after further study, he became head of a History department, before then becoming a Deputy Principal. He now serves in this position at Roseville College. Tim sees his role as a wonderful fusion of ministry and education, and an opportunity to expose young people to the beauty of a relationship with God. He loves that he can reach hundreds of students and their families, and build long-term relationships to help young people find faith. Jesus said in Matthew 18, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven”. Better to ‘grow down’ and go to heaven than ‘grow up’ and go the other way!

They are relentlessly inquisitive, they want to discover the truth, and they are delighted by the world around them. This enthusiasm for the world is exactly what believers in the creator God should exhibit. Have you lost your passion for God’s world and his Word? Do you need to recover some child-like wonder?
Those of us who are getting on a bit find this easy to accept. Children are care-free, energetic, funloving, and a joy to behold (or, at least, that’s how childhood should be). THE STATE OF THE UNION THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! In 2017, God, provided generously for our ministry through His people. Your financial support helped us to reach over 115,000 kids on camps and in schools! What a joy to see God use money for the growth of His kingdom.
2017 also saw over $212,645 raised in our End of Financial Year appeal to build a new indoor high ropes course at Galston. This new activity will encourage more kids to come on camp to enjoy a fun activity, as well as to hear the gospel! That’s the beauty of our camps ministry – kids come for fun, and leave with faith.

Praise God for His enabling as the Schools Ministry team conducted over 1,000 visits to schools in 2017 (the most ever)! Praise God for the relationships the Schools Ministry Associates have been able to develop with students this year. Give thanks for the conversations and opportunities they have had to share Jesus with teenagers. Thank God for the students who attended CrossTrain (CRU’s annual high school leadership training camp) this year. The campers said that Crosstrain was significant in helping them grow in their faith and some said “it was the most important week of [their] lives”. It was such a fantastic camp, where students grew in Christian leadership skills and built strong relationships with one another.
HOLIDAY CAMPS
Praise God that in the last two seasons alone (spring and summer), we saw 44 camps, 2,000+ campers and 587 leaders. Praise God that during spring camps, 25 of students indicated that they became a Christian on camp. In addition, 33 of students indicated that they recommitted their faith to Christ during camp. In October, 125 CRU Camp leaders gathered for CRU Ball 2017 (our volunteer thank you event) to celebrate what God has been doing through CRU Camps. We also held our very first spring VOLT (volunteer training event) in September 2017.

GALSTON Praise God that the new waste water treatment system has been running successfully. Praise God for all the money raised towards building a new indoor high ropes course. We look forward to starting its construction and seeing more campers enjoy this fun and exciting activity, regardless of the weather. Thank God for the new shades built above our low ropes course and archery range. This allows for activities to run effectively, regardless of weather conditions.
SUMMIT
The Summit Team have recently welcomed their newest intake of Summit Fellows. It is very exciting to think about the way God might grow and use them during their time on the team. During Term 4 2017, the Summit Team had the opportunity to run 30 School camps for 2,500 campers. What an awesome gospel opportunity! On St Catherine’s Year 9 camp, eight students indicated they became Christians or recommitted their faith to Christ, 11 students took home a Bible, nine students were given a devotional resource and four students got a resource to find out answers to their questions about Jesus! Praise God for the work that He does through the Summit Team and for the way that they are able to share the gospel with so many young lives on camp and even provide resources for them.
CRUWEST
Praise God for His provision of CRU® West's first Staff Worker, Sheridan Raston (since February 2017). Praise God, with the boost of a Staff Worker, CRU West has made contact with and have begun to run Christian groups in new schools in Perth. There are now groups running in 14 schools. In October 2017, CRU West ran its first leadership camp in Western Australia. Along with our winter study camp, we saw 39 campers on CRU Camps in WA for the year. Praise God for encouraging responses to both camps. In particular, Campbell stated that “[Spring Leadership Camp] helped me to see what Christianity is all about, and helped me to see that Christians need encouragement from each other to grow intheir faith”. Campbell was inspired to start a CRU Group at his school to continue to grow in faith with others. God also gave Campbell the boldness to share his faith at his school chapel after camp. Praise God!

atthew Seidl is Crusaders’ Director of Properties, responsible for coordinating the design and planning of the new Lake Mac redevelopment. CRUview caught up with Matt to find out what’s been happening behind the scenes and where this exciting kingdom building project is up to. CRUview: Why does Lake Mac need to be redeveloped? Matthew Seidl: The capacity and condition of the current site is such that ministry is suffering. The size of school year groups has increased over time to the point where it is now impossible for many schools to bring an entire year group to Lake Mac. We are losing opportunities to tell kids about Jesus. We must act now to turn this decline around by expanding capacity to release the kingdom potential of this iconic site. CV: What work has been going on behind the scenes so far? MS: Lots! A special taskforce has actually been working on the project for the last three years. This team is made up of Crusader staff, Council members, and volunteers with many years of camping experience. Our first step was to produce a design brief that formed the vision for the new Lake Mac. And this was used to undertake a design competition between a number of architects. At the end of 2015 the winners, Glendenning Szoboszlay Architects, were commissioned. To help fulfil the requirements of our Development Application a number of expert consultants were engaged to assist with specific aspects of the design. From this process, we have identified two areas of Aboriginal heritage significance within the site which have been thoroughly investigated and documented by archaeologists and registered with the authorities. We have also discovered that there are a significant number of flora and fauna species located at the site which we need to look after. We have also taken into consideration the geological impacts, such as mine subsidence, as we have sought to complete our designs. In December 2016, we submitted a masterplan DA to Lake Macquarie Council for approval and in the middle of 2017, we appointed an external Project Manager to help us manage the project through to final detailed design, tender, selection and management of builders.

CV: How have you seen God at work throughout the process? MS: I see God’s gracious guiding hand behind everything we’re doing. One small example is that we had originally thought the dining hall should be located on the headland overlooking the lake. However, after prayer and discussion the decision was made to relocate a little further north. I thank God for His leading because the headland turned out to be right in the middle of an Aboriginal midden site! CV: What are the next steps for the project? MS: The Development Application is very close to being approved! Due to the size of the project the application needs to be reviewed and approved by a State Government Joint Regional Planning Panel early in 2018. CV: How do you feel about being involved with the new Lake Mac? MS: I am so excited to be involved in a kingdom project of this scope and scale. To think that children in this generation, and for generations to follow, will come to this site and be presented with the life-changing message of God’s saving grace is awesome and I can’t wait to see the first bus load of kids roll through the gates of the new Lake Mac! CV: How can people get involved? DAVID HAYMAN
David is a school chaplain at Macarthur Anglican School and has been an active partner with CRU since 1994. Recently, CRU Day Camps, Macarthur and local churches have partnered up to start a new Day Camp called 'Super CRU' during the July holidays. David says, “The program has worked so well, with CRU heading it up with excellent leadership, equipment and resources.” David also shares, “Each year, we have students from our school attend the CrossTrain leadership camp and come back enthused, equipped and eager to be engaged in ministry at school. I consider this so important that I am able to subsidise their attendance through our chaplaincy budget.” We thank God for David, and for chaplains like him who are so committed to seeing the gospel impact their schools!

JAIMIE BAILEY
Jaimie is the director of Shred Hotham, a popular winter CRU ski camp. But her first contact with this camp was not in a directing role. Jaimie became a Christian in 2009, on that same camp! Now almost 10 years later, Jaimie reflects on her journey with CRU. “CRU Camps have been influential throughout my Christian life, from introducing me to Christ when I was 15 years old, to challenging and growing me in my faith as a leader, and now helping me to grow as I direct a team and see God at work through the leaders. The work done through CRU is life-changing and it’s a blessing to have been a part of this work for so many years now.” We thank God for Jaimie and leaders like her who have been so impacted by the gospel they want to pass it on to the next generation!
BLOSS LINDSAY
Bloss has been involved with CRU since the very beginning! In Bloss’s final year of school, she remembers, “I went along to the chapel after school with some of the girls who met to pray for CRU. This made a tremendous impression on me, for I had never heard anyone talk to God as though he was alive and really interested in what we were doing. I knew now I wanted to follow Jesus and my life began to change.” Given the impact that CRU had on Bloss’s life, she is thrilled to be able to support CRU financially and in prayer. She shares, “My interest in praying for and supporting the work continues especially when I read and hear reports of the amazing growth. I marvel at the increased number of school groups and camps, and the opportunities for young people to gain training in leadership and ministry.” We praise God for Bloss and for her faithful support of CRU over so many decades!
