I
originally found the car from a son of a friend, but it was still in the process of complete restoration. I drive the truck to local cruises a lot. The longest trip I’ve taken was to Laurel Square Brunswick Cruise, but my favorite ones are the local cruises like Solon Commons. I was looking at a truck for sale at Quaker Steak and Lube when I met a friend who advised me that his son had a ‘51 Chevy Pickup

in his shop for the last nine years under restoration. The truck had gone through two owners during the restoration who each had given up due to high cost of completion. I was impressed at the quality of the restoration and the truck bed full of new parts to finish the project.

The second over of the truck accepted my offer and Jim Potter of Huron Oh. completed the truck in about 4 months. My only input was the addition of the visor, fender skirts, fog lights and bumper splash guards. Nine years, three owners, and three empty wallets later, the truck finally saw the light of day a couple of summers ago.

he Choppers Hot Rod Association finishes out the indoor show circuit with a collection of Rods & Customs you probably won’t see at other shows. Why? Some say it’s because the annual April event gets a lot of just-finished vehicles that guys have been working on all winter long, not to mention the motorcycles, dragsters, gassers, and other kool rides. Others say it’s because the Choppers Rod & Custom Show is one of those “ol skool” kinda shows that we used to go to back in the 60’s & 70’s. Real rods and customs that area hot rodders are showin’ off just for the fun of it. Whatever the reason, you’re guaranteed to have a heck of a hot roddin’ good time at the spacious indoor Soccer Sportsplex in North Olmsted Oh. The huge 3 indoor soccer rinks provides the much needed space, while it’s close proximity to I-480 and the I-80 Turnpike Rte 10 exit just west of Cleveland, Oh. makes it really easy to get to for folks coming in from the East and West, and with I-71 just a few miles, cruisers from Columbus and beyond can get up to the show in just a few hours. Each year the club spotlights a specific group of cars for their theme and the 2017 edition showcased “Custom Vans”. If you’ve never been to the show, it’s a gearheads delight as it’s “no-stress” atmosphere is apparent for participants as well as spectators as soon as you enter. You can treat your self to a beer and relax on the grand stands while you check out the cars, then peruse the ever growing selection of automotive related vendors and model car contest. ***

entor decided to have their annual cruise a little early this year to coordinate the event with the opening of
the newly remodeled bandstand! Parking will change slightly, but I’m sure cruisers will be able to figure it out with the help of parking attendants. This has always been one of the top cruises located on the east side drawing hot rods and spectators from all over Northern Ohio and beyond! Beginning back in the early 2000s, the idea of an annual cruise grew rapidly and cruisers came to see and be viewed by the growing crowds. The cruise is scheduled for Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the Mentor Civic Center in Mentor, Ohio. You’ll be able to enjoy the new bandstand (above) and surrounding area while checking out the cars!
