fter attending this show I doubt they could have used a better adjective in the event name. “Fabulous” it certainly was in every aspect of the show. While this was their 30th annual “Fling” it was also my first trip to this show. After attending, I’m sort of embarrassed to admit I have missed each of the first twenty-nine years!

This rain or shine show takes place in downtown Sugarcreek behind the Fire Station. The atmosphere was very relaxed with an intimate community setting where everyone seemed to be having a great time. Cars and trucks of all types filled the grounds. A live band was playing under a huge pavilion where folks were both listening and dancing to Doo-wop and Oldies tunes. The BelAirs provided live music from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and no one was disappointed! Not too far away, local non-profit organizations were serving Barbecue Chicken dinners, Bratwurst and Strawberry Shortcake under a huge tent. Food trucks were also on site. Between the huge pavilion and tent, there was plenty of room to take a brief respite from the bright sunny 85 degree day after checking out some of the iron and chrome. This is a two day affair and my visit was on Saturday. Registration was from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Participants entered the show from North Broadway and vehicles were judged on their way into the show. There was no need to worry about bugs or road dirt; the judges didn’t make deductions for those things. Attendees were then directed to the huge parking area. I missed the Friday activities but here is a review from the event organizers. The Friday Night Cruise-In was an Open-Class event, meaning even if you have a vehicle newer than 1999, you were welcome to bring any vehicle and check out the Friday night festivities. The event started around 4:00 p.m. and typically, the first 150 cars on Friday receive a dash plaque and special awards like Mayor’s Choice, Chief’s Choice, etc. Spikeman DJ was on-site downtown from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m.

The Wine Country Cruise is a self-driving tour of five of Sugarcreek’s best local wineries and wine stores. It begins Friday afternoon at one of the local wineries and ends at the car show grounds downtown. If you like you can also participate in the optional Poker Run. Each Winery will have a deck of cards and will mark your sheet. Your sheet must be turned in at the show and the best hand will win a prize. Sheets had to be turned in by 6:30 p.m. at the show to be eligible for the prize. I can describe this event with a single word! IMPRESSIVE! – Just WOW! I’ll be back! Be sure to check out the Fabulous 50’s Fling when you make plans in 2022! The event is scheduled to be June 10 and 11th. DRAGONTOWN THUNDERFEST NILES OHIO Photos and Story by Joe Secka

iles is a city of about 18,000 residents located in NE Ohio near the PA border. Niles may be best known as the birthplace of William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States. A reconstruction of McKinley’s birth home and the McKinley National Memorial are located downtown on Main Street. The Niles McKinley H.S. Red Dragons football team recorded a regular season 48 game winning streak from 1959 to 1964 and they were Ohio State Champions in 1961 and 1963 with Glen Mason as head coach. The stadium is named after Robert “Bo” Rein. Rein was a Niles multi-sports star in the early ‘60s and a two-sport athlete at Ohio State before eventually becoming the head FB coach at North Carolina State in 1976. After the 1979 season he was hired to be the head coach at LSU. However, a plane crash after a recruiting trip killed him and ended a tenure for the Tigers before it ever started.

Niles is just about in the middle of the Mahoning Valley, the Youngstown and Warren area, which has an overflow of gearheads. I don’t really know if you can have too many car fanatics though. The plus side of this is the high number of car shows/cruises you can attend within a 20-30 mile radius. Anyway, the Niles Football Moms believed a show at the High School would be a great fund raiser for their organization. The parking lot is huge and easy to access. Food vendors were on hand to help quench the thirst and hunger of those in attendance. The day was a bit of a “smoker” as the temps shot up into the high 80s. The oak trees in the side lot and several canopies were getting a lot of use for the shade they provided. There were awards, food vendors, 50/50, a basket raffle and music by DJ Big Rick. Cars and trucks began pulling in well before the starting time of this 2nd Annual event and continued arriving well into the scheduled show hours. This years show is planned for June 4th. DMC Wild Hot Rod Weekend Ten A Record Setter Photos and story by John McCartney

he fine folks at the Dead Mans Curve Car Club once again gathered together thousands of the coolest cars along with nearly ten thousand fans for their annual Dead Mans Curve Wild Hot Rod Weekend. For the tenth year this annual event once again was held at the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel in Mahwah, New Jersey. Over the four day run of the show cars and car lovers of all ages and styles came together to have a great time at this show. Over its ten year history this show has become the one that everyone needs to attend if you are in the Northeast. Everyone marks this show down and make plans to get their unique cars ready to spend time with all of their fellow car lovers over the four days. As early as Wednesday folks start to show up to mark off their spots for the weekend to make sure that there is enough space for all of those in their clubs that come out to attend. By the start of the show on Thursday folks could look forward to checking out thousands and thousands of cars which are on display over the massive complex known as the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel. All types of cool cars could be found on display from hot rods, rat rods, customs, muscle cars, classics and race cars. Thunder Alley which is put on with help from POR-15, Rez Beverages, Lucas Oil, Tub-O-Towels and Gearhead Coffee. Al Liebmann searches all over the country to put on a true display of funny cars, dragsters, gassers, pro stockers and even a Jet Powered Amish Buggy. Liebmann serves as the ringmaster over this collection working hard on making sure all of these cars are fired up several times each and every day to entertain all of the fans on hand. Along with all the cars that are fired and cackle both during the day and night, the Jet Powered Amish Buggy put on a great show of smoke and fire as well.

Will outside there were so much to check out but the show did not end there. When fans came inside they were able to take a walk back into what it looked like back in the hey days of the Custom Car Show scene. For inside the famous ballroom folks were treated to all types of cool customs, tv and movie cars so much great cars to check out and enjoy. Mario Colasuonno the king of the car show ballroom spends the entire year searching the country looking for all of the best of the best to be featured. Along with all the great cars many famous folks were on hand as well. Butch Patrick who played Eddie Munster on the hit sixties tv show The Munsters signed autographs and told great stories as he sat in front of the two iconic cars from the show those being the Munster Koach and the Dragula. From the Christine Movie came the famous Plymouth from the movie and Malcolm Moochie Welch Danare who was in the movie were both there for folks to see and chat with. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of those crazy creations known as the Zingers. A great display of Zingers was on display as well in the ballroom. Along with these creations were two gentlemen who played a part in the history of these cars. Chuck Miller who built some of the early Zingers as well as the Red Baron along with other famous customs was on hand talking about his creations and what he is building these days. Bob Larivee, Sr. who played a very important part in the early Custom Car Show days and spent the show signing copies of his book which details those early days of the Custom Car shows. famous dad Big Daddy Ed Roth took part in the show as well telling great stories during the run of the show. Roth also spent time checking out the Surf Fink a classic creation which was built by Dead Mans Curve Car Club member Mark Glaz. Famous Custom Car builder Rick Dore always enjoys coming out to the show spending time with fans as well as the Beatniks car club members. Throughout the run of the show there is all sorts of great music played by many bands in all sorts of styles and sounds from classic rock, surf music, rock-a-billy and oldies. Bands could be found playing in various spots of the show, when the bands were on a break the music kept on going as Dj Jim Fun-Zul and Johnny Belair played all types of great tunes as well. The fine Pin up ladies came out in force to take part in the Miss DMC contest once again held poolside and hosted by Angelbadger. Vendors and air brush artists had booths set up with all sorts of great stuff just waiting to purchased and taken home. Another new addition this year was the running of the 1st Annual Air Cooled Nationals which

took place on Sunday of the Wild Hot Rod Weekend. This event featured all sorts of cool air cooled Volkswagens which everyone had a blast checking out and enjoying. The Dead Mans Curve Car Club send a big thank you to the fine folks of the Mahwah Fire Company 2, Mahwah Police, and Jim Wysocki the Mayor of Mahwah for all of their hard work in allowing the show to run safe and smooth. With the Tenth Annual Dead Mans Curve Wild Hot Rod Weekend it is time to look forward to the next ten years as this show continues to grow and improve each year. As 2022 fast approaches car owner and car lovers need to mark it down to plan to attend the Wild Hot Rod Weekend when it once again returns to the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel in Mahwah, New Jersey. For this is a show that changes and improves each and every edition always for the better, which is always through all of the hard work of all the members of the Dead Mans Curve Car Club. ~ John

Al’s 1957 Chevy Bel Air Sport Coupe Great Neck, NY. This car is an exact twin of my first one, which I owned after coming home from active duty with the US Army in 1962. But then amazingly, I would survive a near fatal crash without injury, just before joining the NYPD. That ‘57 was totaled. Fast forward to October 2020 when I found this true duplicate ‘57 Chevy. Now it’s mine again and when I drive it, it’s living a dream because it takes me right back to those glory days in Brooklyn, New York when life was such a treasure. It’s a double miracle.
