Last month’s feature car got me thinking about something I’ll call “first car envy.” Ryan’s ‘73 Road Runner was his first car, and he still has it. That got me wondering... what if I still had my first car?
The first car I ever bought for myself was a 1968 Charger. It had a 383 four-barrel, automatic transmission, and just about every interior option you could get. Power windows and locks, tick-tock tach, bucket seats, and it was all in a perfect forest green. I had a lot of great times in that car, right up until it became “too expensive” for me to drive. Or at least that’s what I thought at the time.
But what if I’d kept it? What if I’d poured the last 35 years of work into that Charger instead of spreading it across, I don’t know, 80 other cars? Would my life be different? Would I have been more focused in other areas of life? Would I be a millionaire by now... or President? Maybe the Charger would be perfect by now and I’d be too afraid to drive it. Or maybe it’d be on jack stands, buried under boxes in the garage like so many others.
As a gearhead who talks to a lot of other gearheads, one thing is clear, we all have that one story. The one that got away, or the one we never let go of. And in the end, it doesn’t really matter which one it is. We’re all bound by this strange force that draws us to every cool car we lay eyes on.
It’s a weird thing I’ve noticed: car people either have one really special car... or a whole lot of cars. I don’t know why that is. Personally, I’ve got a bunch, trucks and cars, most of them not even close to roadworthy. Two don’t even have floors, but I love them all. In my head, every one of them is finished,. I know what they could and should be. Maybe it’s a delusion, but it’s mine.
The truth is, old cars are a ton of work. Just getting one back on the road, let alone building a show car, is a real accomplishment. Even having someone else do the work is a job in itself. I’ve got a truck I spent 10 years messing with before I finally gave in and tried to have it finished by someone else. Three shops and five years later, it’s still not driving.
But here’s the thing: whether you have a car for one month or your whole life, it becomes part of your story. Fixing them, shining them, driving them... that’s what we do. Whether it’s built or bought doesn’t matter. You’re a gearhead. Go spend time with the one you’ve got.
Oh, and if anyone knows a place that can actually finish my truck... let me know, I’ll trade you a magazine company for it. (Not really)

ERICH & ANN’S 1957 BUICK CENTURY | CANTON, OHIO
I met Erich Mollohan at the 2025 Piston Power Show. The booth for his business, Autosport Plus, was set up right next to mine. But truthfully, this 1957 Buick Century would have caught my eye no matter where it was in the building.
Erich picked up the car at a Mecum auction in 2021 and said he and his wife really enjoyed the whole atmosphere there. His wife Ann, who has been around cars her whole life, is a big part of the business too. She works at the shop, helps out at events, and knows a well-built ride when she sees one. She claimed this Buick as hers right away and even after getting multiple generous offers at the show, she said, “This one is mine.” It is a driver, and they take it out to local car shows and cruise-ins around the Akron and Canton area, so if you’re out at the events, there is a good chance you will spot it.

ERICH & ANN’S ‘57 BUICK

This is a super clean, full frame off build with all new wiring and bright Viper red paint. Under the hood is a built 425 Nailhead paired with a fresh Turbo 400 automatic. It runs dual Carter AFB four barrel carburetors that wake up the engine and lets you know this is not some stock setup. The Lokar shifter inside also shows there is more to this than 1957 original Dynaflow slushbox and compliments the custom white interior and finished trunk. Whether or not you are a fan of big wheels, the 22 inch rims add a ton of chrome, fill the wheel wells perfectly and really set it apart from any other 1957 Buick, not that you probably see another one at a show anyway.
Erich’s shop, Autosport Plus, has been in business for 19 years and is located in Canton, Ohio. They specialize in the automotive aftermarket including custom wheels, tires, suspension work, audio systems, window tint, performance upgrades, and more. They work on everything from classics to modern sports cars, Jeeps, and lifted trucks. The truck they brought to the show was so tall the tailgate came up to my neck. I actually took a few aerial style photos of the show from the bed.

SPRING SWAP MEET MADNESS

We kicked things off on Sunday, April 13th at the Monroe Swap Meet in Monroe, Michigan. The weather was mostly good, though the wind gave us a bit of trouble, a common theme for April shows. With over 500 vendors and a huge crowd of spectators, the aisles were packed. They also held a car show in and around the main building with some real quality rides. One of them might even end up in our display at the Piston Power Show next March. Be sure to check out their Fall Swap Meet coming up on September 7, 2025. More info at www. monroeautoswapmeet.net.
The next weekend, on Saturday, April 19th, we were at the Fastiques Rod and Custom Spring Swap Meet in Owensville, Ohio. This one’s held at the huge fairgrounds in Clermont County and includes a CruiseIn. The gates opened at 6 a.m. for vendors and 7:30 for the public, country people don’t sleep in.. Admission was free, and about 100 vendors came out to show their stuff. The wind was the only downside, it even picked up our tent. The Fastiques club is run entirely by volunteers, and all the money they raise goes straight to local charities, which makes this one even more special.
The very next week (yes, it was a packed schedule), we hit the road on Wednesday and headed to the 48th Annual Jefferson Swap Meet in Jefferson, Wisconsin. Setup was on Thursday, and the show ran Friday and Saturday. There was a ton to see, including a wild build, a sectioned truck riding just an inch off the ground on a golf cart chassis. The fairgrounds are massive and packed with everything you could imagine related to cars. The only issue? More wind, blowing at 30 miles per hour, but it didn’t ruin the trip.
Lastly, we wrapped up the month at the Canfield Swap Meet in Canfield, Ohio on May 2nd. It’s supposed to be a three-day show, but for us it turned into a one-day stop. Rain rolled in around 4 p.m. on Friday and never let up. The wind came first, trying to take the tents again, but this time I was able to stake ours into the grass.
