Keepin’ It Random As I write this the wind is over 40mph and it is a cold 23 degrees, yesterday was 50 degrees. California was the center of car culture because you could drive and work on hotrods all year long but I don’t think it is the center anymore. I point this out because despite the weather, Ohio and the close surrounding states have some of the most plentiful swap meets, car shows and cruise ins. We go to 25 swap meets in Ohio and a few more in close by states like Michigan, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Ohioans can go to a choice of over 5 cruise ins per night every week during the summer depending on where you live. Since taking over the magazine I have gone to more car shows this year than I have in 10 years combined and I didn’t even get to a quarter of the ones I could have gone to. I aspire to be like the people that can put their nice cars away for the winter, out of the way and finished enough that you can leave it alone for 4-5 months. I will always have a project car in the garage but this year is the first time a nice car is there too. I am scared of it, shiny paint is not what I am used to. I have had a breakthrough in my neurosis though, I have decided to put the nicest car at the front of the line of projects to customize the paint. I will be flaming the car. I have flamed many smaller things with great results if I can brag a little but this will be the first car. I will try to do a “How to” article or at least document it so everyone can see my success or failure. It is art on a car so I don’t expect failure and I am my worst critic so I have expected to dedicate way too much time to it. Wish me luck. Please don’t forget to send us events, whether you think we know about them or not. I would rather have duplicate notice than no notice. We are dedicated to listing as many shows we can find all around this great hotrod area. We are also going to attend more cruise ins and car shows this year so if you run a show, schedule us to come out. Food and cold snacks are a good bribe to get in the magazine. California’s loss is our gain, the center of hotrodding is moving to the midwest! See you at the shows!

Jerry Waltenberger’s 1950 Chevrolet Suburban
If you have tackled a project you know there is always a story. This one begins with an ad in the newspaper for basket case Suburban a mile from home. Jerry Waltenberger saw the short ad with no pictures of the 1950 Chevrolet and took the short drive to see it. It was in a garage that the roof had fallen in and it was taken apart, doors off and parts everywhere. After the deal was struck, it took 3 trips to bring all the parts home. It had a Buick drivetrain including the chunky rear end, a diamond plate firewall and some rust in the floor and connecting areas. Over the next 8 years Jerry put the old steel on a rotisserie, fixed all of the body problems and then did a ton of chassis work. After sandblasting the frame, a Mustang II front end with Willwood disk brakes was grafted in along with a Ford 9” rear with disks. The drivetrain installed is a Tremec 5 speed bolted to a carbureted small block chevy 350 which posed the most difficult problem for the build, header clearance. A small block Chevy with a Mustang II is a tight fit and after many trials, the Sanderson header was the only one that fit. We all know how getting things to play well with each other on a custom build is sometimes the hardest part but also very satisfying when completed. Jerry did the inside with many comforts including power locks, cruise control and Vintage Air because he used the ‘Burban to tow his Corvette race car to many tracks including Mid-Ohio, Pittsburgh and Nelsons Ledges. The old truck has lived a good life and it sounds like Jerry didn’t do so bad either, they both still enjoy heading to local cruises like Tallmadge Circle and, where I met him, Octane Nights in Ravenna. Jerry also has a 1952 Chevy truck that he drives regularly around town. In 2001 he decided to do an engine swap on this truck which had sat for more than 20 years. He did another Mustang II front end with a ‘85 Vette engine and another Tremec. He updated the wiring and kept it simple with manual brakes and steering. Keep it Simple dumbdumb or something like that. Hopefully I catch Jerry at one of these shows, he’s a great guy and he likes to stay busy so hopefully we’ll see what else he is up to soon. T
he Syracuse Nationals in where else - Syracuse, NY was absolutely HUGE this year! It is the largest car show in the Northeast! The buildings were all full of 450+ vendors, exhibits and elite show cars and the fairgrounds was almost packed with people parking in places I had not seen before. It was a perfect day in July, hot but normal and it brought everyone out. I arrived on Friday afternoon and cruised around to see where the cars hang out. In 2024 there was a show at the mall/hotel parking lot but this year, another hotel had a show in the parking lot and all the lots around, it was crazy! Hundreds of spectators were in lawn chairs at the intersection just watching all the hotrods go by, it was really a cool scene. Lots of law enforcement but somebody always sneaks in a smokey burnout without getting pinched. Downtown Syracuse was packed with cars as well and you see them driving all over. The show attracts 7,000 cars from all over and over 90,000 spectators go to the fairgrounds for the show. There are many events and areas for all types of hotrodders.

I hung around Sparky’s Rockabilly Roundup and the car corral and swap meet more than anywhere else but I try to see the whole show. It is hard to see the entire place in one day but I tried. The New Expo Center has the featured show cars on display as well as some larger vendors and show displays and it’s air conditioned so it is a popular place. The C10 Invasion, Pro Street Alley, a band stage and RC Racing are all on the way to the Lowrider Experience in another building. From there you can head to the Center of Progress where there are a building full of vendors, inside and out. Women’s World, Memories on main Street and the Modern Muscle Elite are are all nearby. While you are walking, there are hotrods tucked in every nook and cranny next to buildings, along the road and in the open spaces in between everything and everywhere. The “Wall of Death” motorcycle show is really fun and crazy, it has a motorcycle in a round structure going up a wall sideways at 50+ miles per hour! Not far from that is the Pinup contest and there are also food and drink vendors everywhere. The talent for the celebrities and the live bands has not been announced for 2026 yet but I saw “The Count” Danny Coker and the Counts Kustom’s crew this time and Kindigit Designs were there in 2024. I have also seen many other hot rod celebrities such as the late great Gene Winfield and YouTubers such as Tony Angelo and Mike Finnegan. Keep an eye on their website below for updates on the 2026 event. Get there early, parking can get far away (they have shuttles) and you’ll need the time to see it. out tons of different traditional show cars and if there is something you like in particular like emergency
vehicles, jeeps, wagons or trucks, they have nights dedicated to them and many others. Everyone can show up on any night but get there early when the weather is nice because it fills up fast.
Along with the weekly awards, Don Sitts was
presented an award for his support and the check was presented to this years charity. All the shows 2025 profits go to Camp Quality Ohio “Letting kids with
