December 2025

KEEPIN IT RANDOM
by: Vic
It snowed last night and my cool stuff is buried outside and stuck in the garage. It’s Ohio so you never know when it’s coming but I can be pretty sure it will melt off, be clear for a while then snow again and repeat until March. I am lucky to have a heated garage, when you’re young you can work in a small cold garage because of the fire and the passion keeping you warm. Now the fire and passion keeps me going but comfort or lack of it will dictate how long that fire lasts. I know why California was where hotrodding started or at least where it flourished in the early days, it is the weather. Just like we get a little extra weight for the winter because we are not doing as much physically, hotrodding slows down here too. In warm climates, people can be outdoor active all year round and they can drive their cars and work on them whenever they want. Think about it, 5 more months to drive the car. That would be cool and I don’t even know how I would react to something west coast car guys take for granted. I know I save all my indoor repairs for the winter and I stockpile parts for winter car upgrades, how do you schedule that stuff when it’s nice all the time?
While we’re in the “winter mode” please let us know the shows you know are coming up. If everyone contributes one show they know of, we could have every show around listed in Cruisin’ Times and that is our goal. I found out this year that even though we were always looking, some shows slipped through our search. If you are putting on a show, cruise-in or swap meet, no matter where it is, please let us know. We will not only list it for free, we can help you with your advertising, with us or just making your Facebook or webpage clear and visible. I can’t tell you how many ads have missing information, the address or date is hard to find or there is no contact info. Everyone reading this, please help us help you, submit events on the website or email us to give a heads up.
The January issue will have a tech article, many more upcoming events and show coverage. February will have much more including a big Piston Power Show article. By the first printed issue of 2026 in March I want to have over 100 new shows all over Ohio and surrounding states. Please help us reach that goal!
Please contact us for shows at cruisintimesevents@gmail.com or our regular mailbox at cruisintimes@gmail.com.

Doug’s 1940 Ford Coupe
CANUCK KANDY

At Goodguys Columbus 2025 I did a photo shoot with this incredible 1940 Ford. John, the builder of the car, was very nice, waiting for me to walk from one end of the fairgrounds to the other at the end of the day. I appreciate the opportunity to feature this car that came a long way for me to see it.
We all have a reason for being hotrod obsessed, for some it is just playing with hotwheels or models as a kid or some it is relatives or neighbors influence and for some it is the culture we grew up in such as tv or movies. I am sure American Graffiti, Gone is 60 Seconds and Smokey and the Bandit have lured many a kid into the car coolness. For Doug Thompson it was a movie with a ‘40 Ford drag racing and he had to have it. When he was 19 years old he found one in a barn and spent weeks convincing an old guy to sell it to him. Doug and his pal Dave worked on their cars together but life got in the way. It seems like I hear that about every car. Fast forward to 2009 and Doug finally got the car to John at Dream Machines in Scarborough, ON. After 4+ years Doug took it to the Motorama car show. It was put on display in the grand hall as you walked in and the 1940 Ford Coupe was selected as one of the top 10 cars in the entire show as well winning best in class interior and best paint. The whole car is incredible but the paint is what gets you first, House of Kolor Meteor Maroon II with Apple Red Kandy and Kosmic Acrylic Show Klear. Kandy paint is the ultimate but really hard to do and extra hard to take care of, any repair cannot easily be matched.

From Doug “In loving memory of the love of my life, my wife Barb, that gave me the joy of seeing the pride in her eyes the one and only time she was able to ride shotgun in the car our life together built. We certainly drove down many unforgettable roads together over 35 years of marriage. I will smile every time I go for a drive in the DT 40 and look over knowing she will always be there riding shotgun next to me.”

GOODGUYS COLUMBUS
Goodguys 2025 Columbus at the Ohio State Fairgrounds was a phenomenal event for classic car and hot rod enthusiasts, a real must attend event at least once.
We arrived early and still had to park way back near the trailer rig area. Actually that ended up being a good thing, we caught a couple top notch cars coming out of their trailers. One is a Street Machine of the Year Finalist: 1970 Dodge Challenger “Relentless” owned by Steve Nettleingham and built by Hot Rod Garage in Oklahoma. The guys were great and let us take pictures and we were lucky to get first crack at it because there was always a crowd once it got into the show. Relentless was a Top 5 Street Machine of the Year and took home TMI’s Best of Show Interior award.
There were many other cars at this level and we did our best to get pictures of them but the crowds around the cars and the sheer size of the show made it hard to shoot everything. With over 5000 entries and 37,000 attendees this is a big show. The Ohio State Fairgrounds is the largest fairgrounds by physical size in the United States at over 360 acres. We shot 2 cover cars at the show this year and I hope to do more next year just because of the quality of rods that attend.

Some of the things at the show were the AutoCross Racing Series Action Featuring the Forgeline “Buckeye Shootout”, a large indoor and under cover swap meet & cars 4 sale corral and over 400 commercial vendor & manufacturer exhibits inside an air conditioned building and outside displays with many semi trucks of large companies including the sponsors PPG and Classic Instruments.
Friday the weather was hot but perfect, Saturday had a storm but most of these cars are drivers so the show was still well attended. Sunday was nice again and the show concluded with awards and Goodguys gave away the 2024/2025 Grand Prize, a 1987 Chevy Monte Carlo Aerocoupe SS.
Next year I will have more caffeine, better shoes, more water, a bigger hat. I will also be looking for Reader’s Rides, cars to be in the magazine article and cover cars so look for us, I wouldn’t miss this show if I were you.
See you at the shows!

AMERICAN STREET RODS

“Tanker” the official shop greeter!

(Pres.)
HAVE A PROJECT? We are currently scheduling projects for the winter. Next year has to be better than the last. People will want to be going out to many cruise in’s and shows with there cars.
WE WORK on customer cars, unlike others who take a large deposit and let your car sit. You’ve all heard the horror stories of guys cars taking years to get fairly simple jobs finished at these shops.
WANT YOUR ROD PAINTED? Again, the horror stories of shops taking a year or longer once they got your BIG deposit. We have you bring your rod to us when we’re ready to start on it, and give it our full attention!

The Pumpkin Run Nationals was held at the Clermont County fairgrounds in Owensville, Ohio and it was on October 3, 4 and 5th. This has been my favorite 3 day swap meet/car show since I started going there 3 years ago. It combines a very large car show sponsored by the Fastiques Rod and Custom Car Club with a great swap meet. The show brings cars from all over and the locals love it as well. This is a 2 street light town that gets overrun by custom cars for 3 days. People sell spots on their lawn to park and many surrounding houses have parties. The cars are diverse from high end show stopping street rods to stock Checker wagons to the most amazing hearse ever created and everything in between. The weather was perfect for 3 days straight and the turn out was record setting.

PUMPKIN RUN NATIONALS
One thing I like about this show is they play The StarSpangled Banner every morning and everyone stops to pay respects to the flag. It is always a great crowd with the typical friendly Ohioan attitude.

PUMPKIN RUN NATIONALS

In a building were 3 iconic sleds, one of them was Larry Watsons original “Panel Job” painted ‘58 T-Bird “Vino Paisano”, a Barris built ‘52 Buick Riviera “Blue Danube” and a chopped candy maroon ‘50 Mercury with a Desoto grille. The “Blues Brothers” were driving around in their auction bought cop car, it needs the lighter fixed but it had the speaker on top. They were of course wearing sunglasses, even at night.
Cars line up on the street to get in at 6am and gates open at 8. The show goes until dark and people hang around after that. There are usually very few open spots and they squeeze cars in everywhere. There is a good DJ all 3 days and a band played Saturday night and Sunday they do the 50/50 drawing just before the awards are given out.
Great people make a great show and this town makes this an awesome show. The fairgrounds are 10 minutes from the outer belt of Cincinnati, Ohio with plenty of hotels near there. Take a road trip if you’re from up North, it is worth the drive.
Don’t miss this show in 2026, it is their 59th anniversary!
See you at the shows!
