any of us grew up traveling around in our parent’s station wagon. Vacations, shopping trips, ballgames, school and countless other activities were facilitated by a trip in the family “wagon.” I’m not sure if Mike Badger had those memories from days gone by but he did decide a station wagon would be pretty kool to have as a cruiser. He soon discovered that nice ones were extremely difficult to find. He did locate one being offered online for sale in

Anderson, Indiana. This one was pretty much a completed restorod ready for the highway. Mike and the owner negotiated until a price was agreed upon. The 1955 Pontiac Chieftan 860 2dr Station Wagon was soon sitting in Mike’s driveway. Early on Mike decided he was not satisfied with the airbag ride and he had it converted to coil overs. That solved the issue he had with the cruise ability and Mike now visits cruises and shows on a regular basis. This Chieftan picked up a First Place award at the Pontiac Nationals along with numerous awards at other events. Some of Mike’s favorite shows have been the Goodguys show in Columbus, the Columbus Zoo show and the Blue Suede Cruise at Summit Motorsports Park. The

longest trip has been to the Nationals in Lexington, KY and he is looking forward to the Hot Rod Power Tour this coming year. A Chevy LS-1 5.7, rated at 345 HP, sits easily under the hood and drives through a 460 LE tranny. Power steering and brakes coupled with air conditioning add to the resto-rod design for comfort. Billet wheels put the rubber onto the road. An updated white leather interior adds comfort to all trips long or short. Mike said Jerry Mack has helped him with changes he wanted to make on his Pontiac. Mike is planning on enjoying his retirement just cruising around his “quietly elegant” Pontiac Station Wagon! ~ Joe

Island Dragway Does the Nostalgia Dance Photos and story by John McCartney
T
he very historic and famous Island Dragway located in the town of Great Meadows, New Jersey is one that enjoys going back in time. Over their racing season Melissa and Carl Milano make sure to honor the roots and early days of drag racing and hot rodding in the form of various events. All of this kicks off with the annual running of Nostalgia Fling. This is just one of many nostalgia events that the fine folks at Island Dragway take time to put on. It was the early days of drag racing when folks would come out to their local drag strip to have fun racing their cars not for tons of cash but perhaps a trophy and some money. You see, back then it was all about the bragging rights who had the baddest of the bad, the fastest of the fast, you get the idea. Folks took time to build their rides and then most time drove them to the track or in some cases trailered them in little trailers. Once they were are the track they were able to check out who and what was on hand waiting to do battle on the drag strip. This is the feel that takes part each and every time Island Dragway opens up its famous gates and puts on a Nostalgia themed event. Island Dragway has the look and feel of the old time drag strips of the day which serves as the perfect backdrop for racers and fans. In addition to the great racing action there was a great car show for folks to check out. On this day fans that went by the iconic Island Dragway Winners Circle could check out the Semi Hearse of John Sbrigato who debuted the creation at Island Dragway even doing a staged photo on

the starting line matching up with a classic front motored dragster. Sbrigato created this one of a kind ride out of a stage coach which was used on the sixties TV show Bonanza, which was transformed into the Hemi Hearse. With this Island Dragway Nostalgia event in the books fans can look forward to more cool events during the racing season such as this event. You can be sure that Melissa and Carl are hard at work making fans feel right at home while still keeping that great Nostalgia vibe. World famous Funny Cars will no doubt be back in force as well for the next racing season. So keep checking out all the Island Dragway social media sites for all the latest up to date info on all their events. ~ John

s many have experienced the last couple of years have not been too friendly to many of us here in the Mahoning Valley. We have just lost the third of three well known Rod and Custom builders from the area.
Fred Rome October 3, 2021 Fred Rome passed away from injuries received in an accident in his famous T Bucket. Fred was a self-taught custom builder, a friend of mine and friendly competitor from back in the early 60’s. He was the Fiberglass, Metal Flake, Chrome, Cycle Builder, and I was the Lowered, Lead Sled Candy Apple guy. We often met at car shows, same field, different genre’s. I remember him telling me that around 18 years old he wanted to build a T Bucket. After asking for help from some local car club, he got flatly turned down. Fred just went ahead and built it on his own. Cruisin Times Magazine has featured his T Bucket. A guy ahead of his time, built the T with a Corvette, independent rear suspension, Opal rack and pinion, 41 Studebaker independent front suspension. He made his own Fiberglass Body, and learned to sew his own interior. I forgot to mention, nobody made extra wide tires back then, so he made an adapter to mate dual wheels for it. So if you remember seeing a T Bucket with four rear wheels, you’ve seen Fred Rome’s T Bucket, or maybe you saw him with his El Camino. Fred also teamed with the best. If you asked George Barris about Fred, he’d say yes, we know him. When in California, Fred worked on the Barris Dragula and the Munster Coach and other cars of the stars. When Barris was traveling to a show, the Batmobile was damaged in a sudden stop. Barris contacted Fred, and he pulled out all stops to help Barris. I’ve heard that Fred, driving Dragula on South Avenue was stopped by a local traffic officer, The officer said, ”What the hell is this”? Fred explained. Fred, a friendly, quiet guy, always willing to meet for coffee will be sadly missed.

Buddy Fares
Buddy, worked full time at GM Lordstown, and during that time started to build model T Hot Rods. After retirement, he could be found most of the time between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM at the Knights Garage. Buddy recorded building I think 39 Hot Rods. He had it down pat.
November 9, 2020, another friend, Buddy Fares passed away. I met him and a friend Roy at the local Hot Dog and coffee shop, A week later, after attending a dinner, he got COVID. About a week later he passed away. Buddy, best known as the President of the Youngstown Road Knights Car Club, was a charter member when the club incorporated in 1953. The Knights were unique, They had a club garage, (which still exists) and governing rules, and played a large hand in working the (now gone) Howland Drag strip. In fact, the day I met him, he was kind enough to give me some documents to copy, the Road Knight’s roster from back in the day, and a copy of the Howland Drag Strip News Letter. Buddy also drove the Knights club built Olds powered dragster.
At shows he would drive his 28 Ford Coupe, prior to that he had Anglias.
If you went to a car Youngstown Car Show, it was probably managed by the Road Knights at the Stackhouse Oldsmobile used car building.

Norm Anderson November 6, 2020, A guy well known, as the owner of Wholesale Tire, Norm Anderson passed away after a long term illness. Again, another friend. Norm was also well known for building Ford Street Rods Dragster Frames and Dune Buggy’s. An avid Hot Rodder loved 32 Fords also and locally drove his steel built 1932 Roadster to shows. Norm was kind of a history buff, fascinated by the old one lung, hit and miss engines, frequently showing them at the Canfield Fair. After retirement (probably semi) he built a museum, and considered himself as a custodian of his unique collection, preserving history for the future. Norm often invited local and national car clubs to visit for a tour. He must have had 15-20 (“running”) one lung engines displayed, explaining how they were used and how they operated. His famous saying, as he went to each one, “This is my Favorite”. Everything he owned and built was A-1, top notch! Norm also loved Tether Cars, Ski Boats, and Lakerster cars. One of the nicest display toys was his Henderson Powered Ski Boat. He sold his Lakester Ford A couple of years ago. Norm was well known in the nation for many of his interests. One of the Road Knights back in the day, and a member of our local club Youngstown Rod and Custom. Norm is missed by many. They say it comes in three’s. Let’s hope that’s true.
