T
he IX center returned to its tank manufacturing days for the World of Tanks Cleveland Tank Plant Homecoming this summer. The place was jam packed with vehicles once built at the building including the M41 Walker Bulldog Tank, M42 Duster, M56 Scorpion, M108 and M109 Self-Propelled Howitzers and M114 Sheridan armored vehicles just to name a few. Other featured military aircrafts are the Liberty Air Museum’s B-25J Mitchell “Georgie’s Gal,” 1938 N3N-Open BiPlane, 1945 Stinson L-5 and Beechwood T- 34B. Also featured the “World of Tanks” gaming stations, which attendees could play the game surrounded by tanks and other military vehicles. Hosted by the I-X Center & the MVPA. HOT ROD SUPER NATS Photos & Words By Joe Secka
H
ot rods, customs, muscle cars and trucks rolled into the 350-acre Mahoning County Fairgrounds during June 23-25. The well-groomed facility was perfect for a large show like this one. New ownership of the event was announced in May which created a slightly different look than in previous years. Lee Hartman changed the name from the Steel Valley Super Nationals to the Hot Rod Super Nationals and made a few changes to the structure of the event to contain costs. The major sponsors of the show were Bob & Chuck Eddy Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Austintown and Summit Racing of Tallmadge. Unfortunately, bad weather cancelled Friday’s Kickoff and After Party. But, then the sun came out and it was rockin’ for the next two days straight! Hot rods and muscle cars, monster trucks, motorcycles and show cars from NE Ohio and beyond pulled in each day of the show. An estimated 1300 cars were on display Saturday including cars from Ontario, Canada. Paved roads throughout the grounds made 16 Cruisin’ Times ~ December 2017

“cruising” quite popular while making access easy for the spectators. Some areas were blocked off to vehicles and designated as food court zones. There was a Kid Zone with a bounce tent and other activities to consume the energy of the younger set. Several cars with TV and movie connections attracted attention and there was a line for rides in the back of a monster truck. When the show at the fairgrounds closed down for the day, cruisers and fans headed for the Southern Park Mall where a large area was reserved for them to park and continue sharing their passions for hot rodding. The mall was an excellent place to wind down being just about a six mile drive from the fairgrounds location with numerous food/dining options. Plenty of parking for spectators made the evening show a comfortable success. - That’s all I have - Joe

T
his is another one of those cruises that takes place at roughly the same time each year and anyone who’s been here makes a point of being here the year after. I’m one of those people! D&S Automotive is a well known East side collision and restyling shop that works hard to keep their reputation on top of everyone’s “excellent” list! From personal experience, I can attest to the fact that they are professionals in the work they do... and the cruises they host! The 2017 cruise was attended by hundreds of spectators and local car fanatics. This year there were nearly (if not over) 230 cars that gathered at their Tyler Blvd. facility. Everything from a tiny blue Volkswagen truck to some massive Rat Trucks and everything in between! Of course they were showing off their facilities and some of the projects they were currently working on. Make a point to be there next year!
