Randomly Speaking Performance Pay...
W
hile I was watching some racing I thought of what could be the solution professional athletic sports - It lies in Performance.
Let me explain, to increase performance in a race car, assuming you’ve got the expertise, all it takes is money. Call any engine builder and the first words out of their mouth will be, “How much you are willing to spend?” It always depends on how fast you’re wanna go. They plug in the required cubic inches vs cubic dollars formula and sure enough, whatever you spend will (almost guarantee) to make you go faster. But not so much with human beings... Sports team owners have been paying big dollars in order to lure the best athletes for years, but it seems like these highly paid players haven’t been performing in relation to the amount of money they’re making. Round by round I watched the cars, some who increased sponsorship from the year before, now had the money to increase horsepower and went faster. But some, even though they had bigger bucks, were beaten in an elimination round, which in turn told they weren’t getting any part of the purse money and probably weren’t going to get

their sponsorship contract renewed the following year. Such is the life of a drag racer. It all boils down to, “You’re only as good as your last round.” Ive also talked with some of the teams who told me about sponsor deals that require “X” number of first round, semi and final round appearances, TV interviews, newspaper and magazine coverage articles. Sponsors are now demanding more “bang for their buck” when it comes to sponsoring race cars. Human being performance is a different story. You can only increase speed and agility by so much, no matter how much money and steroids are thrown at the player. Today’s astronomical salaries guarantee nothing but high ticket prices and foster very little in the performance end of things. Sports should start paying for performance. Let’s say an owner gives a running back a base salary of $200,000 (my god, who could live on anything less?). Then pay him per rushing yard, say $1,000 p/yd. If a running back gets 50 yards he’s gonna get $50,000 at the end of the day. Multiply that by 10 games and he’s brought himself to a very respectful Continued on next page...

EI (Design Engineering) and the City of Avon Lake got together last year for their annual Cruise-In. They upgraded from their original backyard and got a bigger, more visible downtown location at Weiss Field and like the years prior had a large collection of of hot rods, trucks, classics, and race cars. Many Team DEI Race Teams will also be there to show their cars and racing. The next event is scheduled for June 16, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at their new location - 33401 Webber Rd. The Rain Date has been set for June 17 the next day. There will be raffles, dash plaques, and DEI merchandise available for sale in a new and improved vendor area. Tom Miller, DEI director of marketing and sales, says, “Previous events were a phenomenal success. We are very appreciative of the support we have from the City of Avon Lake. shland, located in North Central Ohio, was invaded by nearly 600 antique, classic, and muscle cars and Saturday’s weather was perfect for this wonderful event. One local said, “It’s nice to see so many people bring such a variety of cars, trucks and motorcycles, for everyone to enjoy with the backdrop of our historic downtown”. The event committee, is very pleased to share the news that our benefit, (Ashland County Shop-With-A-Cop), will receive $14,000 this year! Shop-With-

A-Cop is a super program that takes less fortunate Children Christmas shopping for their families. They have received $58,500.00 over the last 7 years, as a result of our car shows. he U.M.T.R. (United Manual Transmission Racers) is dedicated to the lost art of stick shift drag racing. Dragway 42 hosted the UMTR North group on August 18 along with Test-N-Tune and Gamblers racing.

UMTR is divided into two classifications with Street Stick and Quick Stick divisions and then they race in a bracket format. Regionally, the UMTR is broken into the North and South groups. The members are passionate about encouraging the construction and development of new stick shift/manual transmission cars. This was my first visit to the Dragway 42 since the concrete pour last November. The facility continues to make progress and I expect that to continue. Look for great things in 2018! The hillside seating seems to be a popular feature!

Sadly, the UMTR lost their long time announcer, Mark Koon, recently. There was a tribute lap initiated by Harold Hrdlicka’s long burnout and followed by a parade lap by the members. T
his month I want to introduce a different direction in covering local weekly cruises and feature smaller gatherings. These have either small parking areas or limited space avaliable to park cars! We’ve all been to them, but how many have been around more than one or two years? One of the most notable is The Wickliffe Flower Barn on Euclid Ave. in Wickliffe. This former Denny’s Restaurant began welcoming cruisers around seven years ago. What began as an experiment grew into a locally popular car cruise hosting as many as fifty cars and generally gathering 25 to 40 on Wednesday nights! One of the reasons for this popularity is the unusual food they fix for the cruisers and, with the help of some of the regulars bringing dishes, they have enough food and drink for all who show up! Because they are a very active florist, some times they have to do their “floral thing” and forsake the cruise. Luckily, this is a rare occurance depending on the holiday and/or prom season.
