The Holley Carburetor Co.

We have all heard of Holley Carburetors--a renowned brand known for its significant role in the hot rod industry. The story of how it started follows: In 1902, teenage brothers George and Earl Holley established the Holley Brothers Company, focusing on the construction and sales of motorcycles and automobiles. By 1903, they had shifted their focus to the mass production of the “Iron Pot Carburetor,” a critical component for Henry Ford’s 1904 Oldsmobile Model R. This carburetor proved to be a remarkable success for Ford, prompting the Holley brothers to cease vehicle production and establish the Holley Carburetor Co. This new venture quickly became a key supplier for Ford. According to popular legend, it was Henry Ford himself who advised the brothers to specialize, allegedly stating, “If you stop making cars, I won’t build carburetors.” This marked the beginning of Holley’s long-standing and influential presence in the automotive industry. Carburetor technology was not entirely new when the Holley brothers started their work. They studied existing designs and patents to understand the principles of fuel delivery and air mixture in internal combustion engines. Providing the ideal air/ fuel mix throughout the full operating range from idle to redline was complicated. Experimentations showed that the ratio required to burn all the fuel during each combustion stroke was 14.7 parts of air for one part of fuel. The ability to provide that ratio was the foundation of the Holley brand. As the competition for more horsepower escalated, Holley released the 4150 fourbarrel, a carburetor that many regard as the first authentic performance carburetor. Today, Holley remains a top performance brand offering many aftermarket products such as restoration parts, fuel injection, turbo kits, brake parts, wheels, ignition systems, nitrous oxide kits, safety equipment, and more. …Bob

The Ferris RO23 Returns to Savanna: Details of a Passionate Restoration

Photos and Story by Joe Secka

Usually, the “history” of a restoration or hot rod build goes back a few years, possibly even 8-10 years, and perhaps even across multiple owners. This story has proven to be the most detailed provenance (history) of any vehicle I have ever written about. Two retired police officers, Charlie and Denise Caldwell, from Painesville, OH, are the individuals who were the driving force behind this 1967 Plymouth Belvedere II RO23.

8 Cruisin’ Times ~ March 2024

Competition in NHRA Super Stock racing was at a fever pitch by the mid-1960s. Manufacturers were trading blows back and forth with high-performance builds to meet the demands of their team drivers. In 1967, Plymouth upped the ante when they introduced a limited-production lightweight drag-racing package for the Belvedere known as the RO23. There were only 55 of these built as Plymouths, and a matching 55 were built with Dodge badging. They were assembled at the Lynch Road plant in Detroit in February 1967. Interestingly, only 23 were built on the first day. Talk about a special “race day”! The entire run was basic white

with black interiors. There were no heaters or radios. These cars were given no soundproofing or seam sealer during assembly and no foam under the headliner. The front sway bar was deleted, too. The base Belvedere came with rubber mats instead of carpeting, and so did the RO23. The battery was relocated to the trunk for better weight bias. The power was delivered by the standard 426-ci 425-hp Street Hemi. The intake manifolds on the WO23 and RO23 cars were stock pieces with modifications pioneered by racer Arlen Vanke. The stock carburetors were optimized for drag racing since Super Stock rules allowed factory carbs only. If not for the steel

bolt-on air scoop, the RO23 looked like a plain-Jane Belvedere in a white wrapper. However, the sticker was pushing $4000 while a base Belvedere I started at just above $2000. But the RO23 contained everything top racers such as Sox and Martin and many regional racers needed to compete in Super Stock. Quarter-mile times in the low 11s at over 120 mph were dominating this class. Given the low number built and the hazards of racing, personal modifications, etc. over the past fifty plus years, finding one in the modern day was like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Charlie and Denise Caldwell’s

1967 Plymouth Belvedere II RO23 Photos & Story by Joe Secka

Cruisin' Tim es Magazine

Doo Wop Show in Charleston, WV, Charlie and Denise met Chuck Smith. Chuck was the owner of CJ Motors in Philadelphia, TN. He had purchased a Don Grotheer 1967 Plymouth Hemi Super Stock car. While they were admiring that car, Chuck mentioned that he had the 1967 Ferris Motors RO23 Plymouth, but he was not interested in selling at that time. Charlie kept after Chuck and asked to be the first in line if the Ferris RO23 ever was for sale. Four years later, Chuck agreed to sell the car with a few concessions. The Caldwells traveled to Chuck’s shop in Tennessee and found the Ferris RO23 in the back of the shop on a flatbed trailer. It was not easy to inspect, but they checked it over as best they could and then entered into negotiations. They agreed Chuck could do the drivetrain as he had many NOS and period-correct parts that would be needed. Included with the deal was documentation verifying this was the original Ferris Motors racecar. The Caldwells insisted that all bodywork and paint be done under their control. The price was agreed upon, and the car was delivered to Painesville, Ohio. Unfortunately, the Ferris RO23 received some damage while in transit. Coupled with the amount of abuse and shoddy workmanship that had been done to the racecar over the years, the project was now going to 10 Cruisin’ Times ~ March 2024

be far more formidable than first imagined. They even considered scrapping the project, but cooler heads prevailed! Charlie and Denise located the original owner’s wife along with family and friends who knew the car well from its heyday. They rented space from Tim Niewiadomski at East Claridon Auto Body and paid body and paint craftsmen to work in the evenings on body and paint repairs. Short supplies and delays in getting donor parts kept this phase going for two years. Keeping the authenticity and quality of the project even required matching the color on the underside of the car to resemble primer while improving durability. The exterior color, a “dirty” white, was matched by John Zerucha as an exact match from old paint chips. With the car still on the body cart, it was loaded up and taken back to Tennessee, as per their original contractual agreement, for Chuck Smith to install the drivetrain. This phase was expected to take six months. Due to the Pandemic and other issues, the car was tied up for eighteen months. The complicated graphics and striping still needed to be completed. A good friend, Anton Lansky at Anton’s Hot Rod Shop in Hiram, OH, said he was “up to the challenge.” The shop’s workload pushed this phase from November 2021 out to July 2022. The graphics ended up costing four times the original quote due to the difficulty of the project. Charlie and Denise were not new to projects like this. They have built eleven cars in thirty years, and this one is quite likely their last build. Many have been featured in magazines and an early build is in a museum in Switzerland. The Ferris RO23 proved to be more difficult and costlier than originally expected. Over 1600 hours were clocked in the original body and paint plus 200 hours for the graphics. Trim restoration expense was twice what was expected. Drivetrain and interior costs skyrocketed. Four trips to Tennessee, supplies, paint, and shipping costs became outrageous due to the Pandemic and lack of availability. But there was a light at the end of the tunnel. A journey that lasted seven years and cost far more than ever anticipated resulted in a project that eventually exceeded Charlie and Denise’s expectations. They became acquainted with the family and friends of Jack Ferris who raced this ‘67 RO23 back in the day. Jack owned a dealership and raced the car regionally often at Cordova Dragway in Illinois. Along the way, the Caldwells befriended Jack Ferris’ daughter, Kathy Ferris-Lowry and her husband Carter. The Ferris family was immensely supportive in sharing information and photographs. Jean Ferris, Jack’s wife, was helpful as well. She even located

the original window sticker and had it framed! Many others had owned this car (although none held title) and the Caldwells reached out to them. For whatever reason, they refused to get involved. It is partially due to this lack of participation that steered Charlie and Denise to build the RO23 exactly as it was raced by Jack Ferris and Bob Mace in 1967. With the help of a good friend, Jim Kramer, plans were made to introduce the car at the 2022 November MCACN Show (Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals) at the Stephenson Convention Center in Chicago, IL. The car raced a lot in the Midwest, so this was an appropriate introduction. Many of the people mentioned above would be in attendance. Another friend of the Caldwells, Betty Firebaugh of “Miss Betty’s Threads,” worked tirelessly to reproduce the team shirts worn by the Ferris Motors crew back in 1967. The Ferris RO23 1967 Plymouth Belvedere II received 99.4 out of a possible 100 points. Talk about execution! This one was a successful build for sure. But the weekend was just getting started. One of the judges, Dave Weiss, told Charlie and Denise they were in good company. The 1967 RO23 Sox and Martin Super Stock was parked right next to the Ferris car. Everyone was amazed to see that the Sox and Martin car VIN ended in 07 and the Ferris VIN ended with 08. About an hour later the famous Five and Fifty Plymouth RO23 car entered the display and was parked right behind the Sox and Martin car. Closer investigation revealed its VIN ended with 06. It was the sixth car to be built that day back in 1967, with the Sox and Martin car seventh in line, and the Ferris car next in line as the eighth RO23 to be built. These cars rolled off the assembly line all in a row and went their separate ways. Then fifty-five years later were parked right next to each other. What were the odds of this happening? Later that afternoon, the Caldwells hard work was rewarded with the “Concours Gold” award of excellence. It was a fantastic, wonderful, fairytale weekend come true. But the story has one more chapter! In June of 2023 Charlie and Denise made another trip to Illinois with the Ferris RO23. Jack Ferris had a Plymouth dealership and raced Mopars between 1961 and 1968 in Savanna, IL. (Were you wondering where I came up with the title to this article?) Some of the folks associated with the car had not seen each other for over forty years. A trip over to Cordova Dragway where they were able to make a pass down the quartermile closed another fantastic weekend. So, what are you going to build? That’s all I have - Joe 12 Cruisin’ Times ~ March 2024

ALL FAITHS PANTRY CRUISE-IN Words and Photos by Carl Schanz

ALL FAITHS PANTRY FIRST CRUISE-IN June 7th 2023 On June 7th 2023, All Faiths Pantry held their first “Cruise-In” with the help of Yorktown Bowling Lanes. You may be wondering…What is All Faiths Pantry and why are they having a car cruise? I will explain. All Faiths Pantry or AFP as they are known, is non-profit volunteer based organization that provides and delivers food and items to those that qualify in Parma, Parma Hts., Brook Park, Brooklyn, Independence, Seven Hills, Broadview Hts., and Old Brooklyn Communities. They are always looking to reach out to the public to say “here we are and here is what we do”. They thought it would be fun to step out of their comfort zone and try something different. That’s just what they did! With some thought, volunteers and help from Yorktown Bowling Lanes in Parma Hts., AFP had their first Cruise-In. What a great first time effort it proved to be. The weather was perfect, which is always a plus. Plenty of parking, which filled up quickly with a start time of 5 o’clock. There was no See all events & classifieds at www.cruisintimesmagazine.com

disappointment with the variety of classic, custom, hot rod, rat rod cars and trucks that showed up. Great car show food and beverages were handled by Yorktown Lanes. Whether you brought a car or spent the evening looking and talking with the owners, it was free for all. Many who came out brought non-perishable food items to fill the truck for AFP to use in taking care of those in our communities. A good simple time of good people, food, music, door prizes, 50/50 raffle, sharing time with friends and learning about an organization that helps so many around us. Look for the 2nd All Faiths Pantry Cruise-in coming soon. If you would like to volunteer, donate or know of someone who may need assistance call AFP at 216-496-4329. - Carl
