Randomly Speaking Saving Things..

ver since that article I wrote about cleaning the garage, I’ve been contemplating going out there and doing the deed. It’s been 5 months now and believe me, I’ve thought about it many times. Then, it came to me like a ton of bricks the problem is.... well, it’s not the actual act of cleaning, it’s the time it takes to review the stuff that’s cluttering the garage.

It’s not easy figuring out what you thought was important at a particular moment in time and why you forgot about it. As I began the process, I started reminiscing about the time I got this particular part and when I got that particular part.

Before I knew it, my wife got back from shopping and there was still a whole bunch of stuff laying around, only now it was strewn all over the place and out into the driveway.

It looked better before I started cleaning! Here’s just a few of the things I found.

My Detroit Autorama coffee mug that the DJ gave me. He gave me the mug ‘cause he felt bad that I had to take a bus to the show. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that we did it on purpose.

I looked around and saw all the various signs and posters which cover all the holes in the dry wall. The first hole brought back memories of me trying to break a bolt with a hammer. The hammer head flew off and put a big gouge in the wall and that’s when I put up the ‘Welcome Race Fans” sign.

I found lots of boxes of sample gasket maker, which my family saved from various car show goodie bags.

One year, they boxed ‘em up and gave it to me for Fathers Day. I never use the stuff, but my boys do.

They line up the little tubes and then using a sledge hammer, they pound ‘em a good one and then see how far they can spread the shot of gooey mixture.

I dug deeper into the box and felt really bad about finding a Car Show Tee-shirt that they sent as payment for the ad I ran in the magazine, so now I know why their ad never made it into the magazine. Now I don’t feel so bad.

Then there are all the wheels and tires I’ve bought for my truck. As soon as I get a newly leased vehicle, I immediately, take off the original tires and wheels and put on different ones.

2 years later when I’m about ready to bring it to the return center I put the original tires and wheels back on. I’m usually peering out the window when they look at how much fresh tread is left on the tires and they say, “Boy you’ve really taken care of this truck, those look like the original tires!” Without looking up from my copy of Field & Stream magazine I say, “Oh, the tires, yeah, they’re original... you can check ‘em.” Sure enough, they run the numbers, shake their heads and say “Yeah, we checked ‘em and they’re original equipment! You must be one of those guys who’s a real “neat-nick”.. we bet your garage is probably spotless, huh?” To which I say, “Well, I do what I can!” ...course that’s just me randomly speaking.

Built-to-Order 4L70E Transmissions When you’re building a performance muscle machine or street rod, you don’t want to settle for an off-the shelf automatic transmission. GATHERING IN THE GRAPES Photos and Story by Joe Secka If you are looking for a cruise to attend that boasts a great relaxed, country setting, this just might be the one for you. The 7th Annual Gathering in The Grapes Car Show at Mastropietro Winery Inc. in Berlin Center, OH took place on June 3, 2018 This is an annual cruise where the grounds are extremely well groomed and you are surrounded by rows of grape vines. When you want to take a break from checking out the cruisers, there is plenty of outdoor space and patio seating where you can select from Mastropietro’s dining menu along with items from the winery and brewery.

There was a nice variety of vendors and DJ Big Rick was spinning the oldies music for everyone to enjoy! There is plenty of space and I’m guessing there were about 130-150 cruisers in attendance.

Unique trophies seem to be the norm for this show as well!

The New Hope United Methodist Church of Niles, OH is the show’s host and their youth program is the beneficiary of any monies made at the cruise.

Show organizer, Jo McElhaney, has been doing this program s ince its inception and, with many volunteers, keeps everything running smooth.

There is always a nice mix of cruisers for this show.

46th Annual Atlantic City Auction and Car Show - One Great Show Photos and story by John McCartney For the past 46 years GPK Auctions has taken over the historic town of Atlantic City deep in the heart of New Jersey. With the famous Atlantic City boardwalk and Atlantic Ocean just a stone throw away the Atlantic City Convention Center is the perfect spot for this annual auction. Each and every year the first weekend in February brings hundreds and hundreds of cars to be auction off under the guidance of GPK Auctions.

The massive Atlantic City Convention Center floor is filled to the brim with well over four hundred popular classics, legendary muscle and rare collectors cars all waiting to find a new home. From Friday the first of three days folks of ages and backgrounds come pouring into check out all the cool cars and to find out which ones bring in the most money.

Fans could wonder through and get an up close and personally look at all the great cars. In addition there is a huge flea market with all sorts of cool automotive treasures all up for sale. Along with all the cars in the auction there were many famous cars on display for folks to check out and take a step back in time. From the famous Fireball 500 movie car, Batman Justice League Batmobile, Dukes of Hazzard’s General Lee, Red Baron or trucks and cars from the Transformers where just a few of the great cars on display. enjoyed racecars there were plenty of those in the forms of vintage funny cars, classic hot rods, legendary racecars all there filling the convention floor as well. Many Modern Muscle Car Clubs from the area made a club outing to display the modern Mustangs and Camaros to bring everyone to update on what is new in the car world.

GPK Auctions does a great job on getting so many cool cars for the auction to be purchased by the public. At the same time they getting cool cars for display as well make the show one that appeals to car lovers both young and old.

John’s ‘65 Mercury Comet Cyclones Louisville, OH. Red-White-Blue 1965 Mercury Comet Cyclones. The red Cyclone was my first new car purchase and after 130,000 miles, it still has original paint, interior and engine. Modifications include Crager SS wheels, Hurst shifter and Sun tach. I purchase the convertible in 1999 and started a seven restoration/modification. The badging has been changed from a Caliente model to a Cyclone, front suspension is rack-n-pinion, 351 Ford crate motor with 3 - 2’s intake, Tremec 5-speed, 9 inch with 3.25 gears, and custom dash. My blue Cyclone was acquired in 1983 and was stored until 2012 when modifications started. It has a Speedway 4-in drop straight front axle, 427 Ford crate motor with 2 - 4 intake, Tremec 5-speed, 9 inch with 3.73 gears. The choice of color is a 1996 Mustang Cobra color for the USA theme.

ack in 2008, Sam Giglio (owner of County Line Auto Restorations at 11000 Chardon Rd in Chardon) and the folks at the Geauga County Fair Grounds got together and put on a fantastic gathering of over 300+ classic cars, hot rods, early Rats, muscle cars, and home built beauties!! Ya know, these events are never easy to organize! For as well attended as this show was, a repeat performance never happened! You can only imagine the myriad of reasons that it didn’t continue! The fact is, it didn’t!!! It wasn’t for a lack of desire and effort put forth by the original group that put it together.

I think the demise was due to politics and the lack of funding and support. What a shame!!!

I’ve identified as many of the cars and people as I could. The passing of time and the loss of my own memory functions, have left some pics with very little identification. If you know who many of these people are and/or the cars they drove, let me know on the Eastlake Boulevard of 500 Flags Cruise Facebook Page with a comment or two and I’ll share those IDs.

“Mouse Guards” If your’re having problems with mice getting into your cars during the winter, this may help deter the problem.

I picked up a 12” wide roll of roof flashing.

As you can see in the picture below, it is standing on edge with minimal support. I can still open the doors to check inside. The roof flashing can be bought in 25 ft rolls, and 2 rolls easily surrounded my two cars. Cost was less than 50 bucks! Over the last 40 years, I have tried many things, but this seems to work the best.

Great Drying Tools One of the most frequently asked questions that I get is what is the best method of drying my vehicle? And guess what..I have a good answer for that!

One way is using towels that are slightly damp, like at full serve car washes. This method works really well especially on surfaces that are not very wet.

When your vehicle comes out of the car wash, the air blows most of the water off, leaving small wet spots on the surface. It is at this time that a slightly wet drying towel does a superb job. It not only glides across the surface easier but will also clean any dirt that may still be on the surface.

Down sides: Newer towels leave lint, so it’s better to use towels that are already broken in. I prefer microfiber for almost everything I do and in this case, a well broken in cotton towel along with a good microfiber cloth will work amazing.

For years, the most widely form of drying a vehicle had been using a chamois, which back in the day were made of real leather and of more recent years the materials are synthetic in nature. Natural (Animal hide) chamois did a bad job of soaking up water, they were hard to store and pretty pricey.

The newer synthetic materials (Last 20-25 years) pickup very large amounts of water and can be wrung out multiple times.

Some come in a tube, while others come flat in a bag.

Another great way to dry off a vehicle is really the best way

but only in combination with one of the above methods. Use a (water) blade to dry off the vehicle. This method works the best because it whisks 90% of the bulk water off the vehicles surface eliminating excessive wringing of chamois or towels.

There are many different kinds of blades sold and although they are widely referred to as water blades, they all have different names. Using one of these tools in combination with a towel or chamois will allow you to get the best results while greatly cutting down on drying time. And doing a better job. Most car dealerships and detail shops use a combination of a blade with a towel or chamois and by using this tool you’ll see for yourself that this is a great way to dry off a vehicle of any kind, size and type. Water blades do not scratch. If they did, the major auto part stores as well as other retailer/wholesaler suppliers would not sell them.

Big tip: If you are using towels, use microfiber as they do not lint, the good ones hold 8 times their weight in water and they dry surfaces better than any other material known to mankind!

Late Bloomer The term ‘late bloomer’ is usually thought of in terms of kids. Like the guy that was always undersized, skinny, or both. Then, after one summer vacation he shows up in school and you wonder, ‘Whoa!, what happened?’ Same for girls but usually some other ‘attributes’ besides height were at discussion (hee-hee), and in both cases they may, all of a sudden, go from so-so in sports to excelling and maybe becoming team captains. Sometimes. With sports its just that they didn’t have much chance to show what they could do until sometime later and then, “Bam!” you can’t hold them back.

That last part is sort of how I see my car hobby life. Sure, I’ve been car-crazy since I was in a stroller. Built models, bought and drove fast cars. But, when it comes to truly getting into it and building cars to drive, I think I may be like what I described above. Late 70’s/early 80’s, well, let’s just say I was pre-seriously occupied in recreational activities (and obviously survived!). Then, in 1984 I married an ‘instant family’, soon adding 2 more making us a family of 6. Work was sketchy until I started with a company 1988 that I am still with.

So, family, work, and keeping myself on the ‘straight and narrow’ were keeping me plenty busy. During this time, I still bought tons of magazines and went to car shows and races but that was it. Then, in 1998, our youngest was 14 (and I was 40!) and after bouncing the idea around with my wife, we agreed that yes, I need to get a project car to tinker with. This was the ’56 Morris Minor ‘field-car’ from

Kentucky that became Lil Mo. Well, Lil Mo was sold, my wife wanted her own street-rod, which led to the current build…a 472 Caddypowered 1937 Nash (Big Nashty).

And now, I’ve added a ’71 Opel GT to the stable to be the successor to Lil Mo (Lil Oh!). But I have to finish Annie’s Nash before touching the Opel. Am I trying to make up for lost time? No. But once I was able to start building, I found that its something I love to do and don’t want to stop. Sure, my back tells me when a days thrashing should end.

Other parts are also showing wear, but it doesn’t mean stop. Besides, I’m under too much peer pressure.

Just watching fellow Chopper Lou Novotny at 80-something wrenching on his doubleblown big-block Packard or V-8 ’53 MG…or prepping his alcohol dragster, or schooling us on our club dragster and I know I’m in a good spot. Many, many friends have been made and a lot of them are in their 70’s and 80’s. So much to learn from!

So, am I a late-bloomer by starting at 40? I don’t know about that. I got into the nuts & bolts of this world when the time was right…for me. I keep learning from all of you folks and appreciate all the fun we have along the way. So, if it’s okay with all of you, I’m going to trade in the “Late-Bloomer” tag for “Just Glad I Got Here”!
