Other new and enjoyable features of the hippest ship around include the 5 0’Clock Somewhere Bar as well as Jimmy Buffett’s iconic Margaritaville, and a new venue, The Cellars by the Michael Mondavi Family from California’s Napa Valley. Iron Chef Jose Garces is onboard with a new restaurant named Bayamo as well as the Pinchos Tapas Bar which is proving to be a very popular spot. Other new dining venues abound and of course there’s the fantastic Deck 8 inside/outside dining and drinking spots to lap up a cocktail and some tasty food with a sea view.

TRAFALGAR SHARES THE LOVE WITH FAMILIES Well known guided tour company, Trafalgar Tours is launching a new Family Experiences program this year which offers 11 guided vacations around the globe including adventurous extensions and cruises. Noting a keen interest and the growing trend of families seeking to share both experiential and educational activities, this renowned and award-winning company, has created these vacations with the family in mind. Some of these tours include a Gladiators, Gondolas and Gold tour where an expert chef will show families how to create a perfect Italian Pizza! Setting sail this May, the newest and most innovative ship from Carnival Cruise Line has been designed to provide the ultimate family vacation. With its vast array of one-of-a-kind-on-board features, the Carnival Vista will truly dazzle every family member and provide everlasting memories of fun at sea. Carnival is literally taking cruising to new heights by introducing the SkyRide, a first-of-its-kind aerial attraction which has adventure seekers pedaling recumbent-like cycles across an elevated 800-foot long track. Something that every family can try and enjoy! Add to that the SportsSquare which is a fun-tastic all-ages open-air recreation area offering a two-level miniature golf course, a jogging track and a suspended ropes course. There’s also a new Clubhouse which is a modern indoor sports hangout (teenagers anyone?), featuring mini-bowling, ping-pong, arcade sports games and so much more. Then the family can cool off together at WaterWorks, the largest aqua park in the Carnival fleet which is highlighted by Kaleid-oSlide, the cruise line’s first inner-tube slide. But let’s not forget all the indoor thrills and excitement on this ship – yet again, Carnival has hit a home run and has something for every family member to enjoy. How about a comedy show, the 182 seat IMAX Theater (an industry first) showing blockbusters and family favorites, some audience participation at the Hasbro Game Show and an ice cream parlor inside the suitably named Cherry on Top confection store.

LUXURY You may have already cruised on a major contemporary cruise line and perhaps also on a smaller ship or a river vessel but have you thought about setting sail on a luxurious cruise line that may also offer an all-inclusive experience? If this style of vacation appeals and you seek a cruise which offers a fabulous and different onboard feel, a vast array of inclusions and itineraries that go far afield and explore some of the most fascinating sights in the world then read on. Remember, that because most of these lines include so many features in the price you pay before you cruise, your onboard expenditures will be quite minimal. Gratuities and your wine and spirits are often included in the fare as are many other items on certain lines – sometimes even the airfare and shore excursions in each port. There’s also a more social atmosphere full of camaraderie on board as you mix and mingle with fewer guests and enjoy open seating dining. And of course the superb accommodations and fabulous service are also other reasons to cruise this way. Here’s to a taste of the good life at sea.

ENTERTAINMENT IS ONE OF Norwegian’s mainstays and we saw several excellent shows of the highest caliber with great talent, costumes and all were fun and different. We dined at the 6pm show in the Supper Club and saw For the Record: The Brat Pack which focused on the iconic 1980s movies from John Hughes such as The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Sixteen Candles. This production has become such a popular hit on board the Norwegian Escape that the cruise line recently announced it is moving it to the Main Stage and will soon announce a new show for the intimate Supper Club setting. After Midnight in the Escape Theater, is a phenomenal performance with superb costuming and singing. This production focuses on the Golden Age of Harlem’s famed Cotton Club – and is a smash hit musical nominated for a number of Tony Awards. The crowd loves this show and the cast received a standing ovation from an audience that considers this a sure-fire hit! The Haven is a favorite space – a “ship within a ship” enclave offering a calm and soothing atmosphere with separate key card entry. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated and The Haven offers guests their own pool and private indoor/outdoor deck space, a restaurant, several lounges and the services of butlers and concierges too.

In the Galapagos Islands, the rules for us were clear: stay six feet away from the wildlife. Apparently, the wildlife didn’t get the same memo.

NO MATTER HOW scrupulous you are about sticking to the well-marked pathways on the isolated Galápagos Islands, you’ll be accosted by albatrosses, seduced by sea lions, and befriended by boobies (the feathered kind) at every turn. Incredibly, the beautiful creatures you’ve come to see are equally keen to see you. Hundreds of miles off the coast of Ecuador, the islands enjoy UNESCO World Heritage Site status, hunting is banned, and there is no large-scale harvesting of anything aquatic, so even the underwater world is welcoming. Humans stay obediently on the path, but the creatures go wherever they choose, making for the most incredible wildlife experience imaginable. A cruise to the Galápagos Islands had topped our bucket list so boarding

the Silver Galapagos had a pinch-me feeling to it. We were to follow in Darwin’s footsteps, seeing the natural world that inspired On the Origin of Species. The Silver Galapagos is an expedition ship, designed to navigate where larger vessels can’t. Smaller than other Silversea ships, it nevertheless has all the amenities necessary – a gracious dining room and a top deck grill for outdoor, casual dining. Our suite was well-appointed with a private balcony, but we spent most of our time in the Explorer’s Lounge, as our guides prepped us for our adventure ahead. Days begin with an island hike that lasts several hours, snapping photos of preening boobies, sun-drunk sea lions, and love-sick male Frigate birds puffing out their chests in hopes of luring a female.

Then there’s snorkeling or kayaking, surrounded by fish such as a school of Burrito Grunt fish, wagging their brilliant yellow tails, swimming so close that their fins brush against you. We also saw a leopard spotted stingray flapping her graceful wings, while two sea turtles paddled past. However, our hearts were stolen by the sea lions that swooped around us. On shore, they splashed and wrestled before collapsing, into an instant sea lion stupor, punctuated by the occasional barking of a pup in search of mum. From stunning wildlife experiences to heart-stopping moments under the waves, fine dining and fascinating guides, a cruise on the Silver Galapagos has just one downside. It might just ruin you for anything that comes after.

O

UR FAMILY DOCTOR RECOMMENDED a packaged tour. School friends, who are avid and experienced travelers, had done it. And now so have I. Mine was Trafalgar Tours’ Real Britain and what I quickly realized was that I was experiencing all the elements of a cruise without the ship. Instead of a captain, driver Jonathan skippered our modern, comfortable coach through the English countryside, while Mhairi, our Scottish-sounding-but-Irish-born tour director, filled us in on the history behind all that we saw and experienced. Although I had often traveled to the United Kingdom, this was definitely one of the more relaxing visits. Gone was my usual angst about keeping to the correct side of the road and I didn’t have to map out an itinerary or figure out how to find my way. Everything – or at least as much as I wanted done for me – was done. Days began and ended with bellmen collecting suitcases from, or delivering suitcases to my room. There were no lineups when we checked into our hotels, just a table full of room keys awaiting us. Even our attraction admissions were expedited. It was a week of handling only the three c’s – camera, carry-on and coat. Like a ship-styled cruise, our tour included a variety of destinations. At each stop, Mhairi provided us an overview, led us past waiting queues, introduced us to a local specialist and suggested top local draws for our free time, another attractive aspect of this tour. Trafalgar’s itinerary planner deftly managed group time to include all the highlights while still leaving us time to linger over a place, a plate or a passion.

Our Real Britain tour started in London where our local city guide, Tony, arrived with a coach to collect guests who were divided between two hotels. He then drove us around the city core, providing an overview of London – a handy introduction for first time visitors and a useful refresher for returning visitors. One of the top must-sees is the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Our tour, however, began on a day when the guard change wasn’t scheduled, so Tony took us to Whitehall and Horse Guards Parade instead, to see mounted soldiers in plumed helmets with drawn swords, sitting motionless outside the former army headquarters. There we saw the oft-overlooked mounted regiments change guard. Their horsemanship is stunning. The soldiers – who, it is important to note aren’t merely ornamental, but in active service – control their mounts in a crowd, getting them to back up and move sideways. If you’ve ever ridden you know how hard that is to accomplish. From the Horse Guards, Tony walked us up The Mall to the Palace where I opted to explore the city on my own while others continued the guided tour. Our first day on the road took us to the mysterious Stonehenge, then on to Bath, where, after lunch, we explored the ancient Roman baths and Jane Austen fans basked in the glories of their heroine’s museum. We stayed the night in Bristol, where a welcoming pub dinner was arranged for our group. The next day, we enjoyed a pleasant drive through a countryside of hedgerow-lined fields to the

Ceramic Trail and Wedgwood pottery, which is home to those delicate, china cups, saucers and ornaments our mothers and grandmothers treasured, and would never allow us to touch. Then to Chester, founded by the Romans in the year 79, Chester is the England many people come to see but miss. Inside the 2,000-yearold wall built by the Roman legions – open to all – are streets lined with timber-framed Tudor buildings. Though an optional tour to Llangollen, Wales was offered, I stayed to explore Chester. In the evening, several of us went for dinner to the Albion Pub, a spirited World War One-era spot where the menu remains old fashioned. I had the most amazing cottage pie, made of tasty ingredients. It was a great day topped off with a delicious homecooked meal. This tour also took us to the Lake District where, after a morning boat tour on Lake Windermere, we visted Grasmere where the poet William Wordsworth lived and is buried. Here, in an outside café not far from the brook-side village church, I had lunch listening not to cars and other sounds of modern civilization, but to birdsong. It is a place where tranquility reins. The Lake District is so extraordinarily beautiful that I will certainly return. And that’s the other advantage of this type of tour – it’s a fantastic way to sample Britain and plan return trips. Our next stop was Edinburgh, where our two-night stay gave us time to explore the city, the Castle and Royal Mile. While some shopped, I joined fellow-traveler John, to find the highlyrecommended End of the World Pub. VACATION MAGAZINE SPRING / SUMMER 2016 49

Stewart Monument on Calton Hill, overlooking Edinburgh, Scotland.

Our options included a visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia and a traditional dinner in Stirling, the ancient capital of the Stuart dynasty. In the evening we were met outside Stirling Castle by a bagpiper in full regalia – bearskin hat, kilt, sporran, spats – who piped us down the hill to our restaurant. The evening included piping in the haggis as well as the humorous musical styling of Tommy, our piper. His brogue, wit, passion for the pipes and personality topped off a perfect evening.

Keeping to the castle theme, the tour included a visit to the home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, Alnwick Castle. This is where Harry Potter was filmed playing Quidditch and as we visited, children were receiving broomstick-flying instruction by costumed staff. Further on was Warwick Castle, followed by York, where we arrived to the peeling church bells of York Minster, a place that is both spiritual and superlative. It took 250 years to build, is the largest church in Northern Europe, one of the world’s oldest and has the largest medieval stained glass windows in the world. Our final drive day took us to Shakespeare’s hometown, Stratford-on-Avon. Much of the day was driving, so in a way, it was like the usual cruise sea-day. We stopped for a photo op at Anne Hathaway’s cottage, then went into town to visit Shakespeare’s birth house where, in the gorgeous gardens, young actors performed snippets from Romeo and Juliet. We returned to London for the final, free night of the tour. As we said our goodbyes, I realized how many of my fellow travelers were repeat guests, some transferring to our itinerary from other Trafalgar tours. Those of us who were new to the experience were certainly ready to do it again. We’d had a real vacation made as simple and convenient as possible. n We can provide extensive information on a variety of Trafalgar’s guided tours in Britain and elsewhere. The delightful and charming staff cater to your every need and Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, with its 5-star, award-winning and all-inclusive service truly does go above and beyond in every aspect. You come away from your seven day cruise amidst this gorgeous wine region along the Dordogne, Garonne and Gironde Rivers feeling very special and truly pampered. I first sailed this ship almost 10 years ago and it has since been beautifully refurbished with a color palette in shades of blue with white accents. There are beautiful objets d’art throughout the ship along with stunning and colorful paintings and mirrors everywhere. The prettily decorated Gascogne Lounge is the main gathering spot on board for cocktails, musical entertainment, lectures and information sessions about the ports of call. And it was here that we enjoyed a wonderful oyster tasting on our first sailing day which was accompanied by a refreshing local Sauvignon Blanc wine. Just a preview of all the wine-tasting we would accomplish in the days ahead. The head chef on the ship was from Bordeaux so our entire week was full of the most wonderful and tasty local dishes as well as perennial favorites such as Croque Monsieur and French onion soup which could be ordered for a more casual bistro lunch each day in this sunny and inviting spot. The River Royale accommodates just 130 guests in a really lovely boutique atmosphere and because it is all-inclusive, all of your meals and snacks, as well as unlimited drinks on board including fine, distinctive wines – many of them from the renowned Bordeaux area – are included. All coffees, mineral water, teas and soft drinks and juices are also offered as are gratuities for staff on board and for the drivers and guides on the many

On one occasion we dined in the small and exquisite (reservations only) Claret Room which is also used on several evenings a week for wine tastings and pre-booking that is highly recommended. The ship’s sommelier does a very fine job and the wines are especially chosen for each Uniworld cruise to highlight the region in which the ship is sailing. On another evening we were able to dine on deck in the marvelous glassenclosed casual restaurant called the Blue Fox and this was a highlight of the cruise. Holding only about 30 people, one needs a reservation for this spot too and it is only open on certain evenings. The menu is limited but dining practically outdoors as one sails on a slow-moving river into a fabulous French sunset is quite captivating. The Blue Fox also opens for casual lunches on certain days as well and was much enjoyed by every guest.

Having sailed along many of Europe’s finest rivers, this is one of the most wonderful and leisurely cruise experiences I’ve had.”

But of course one of the main reasons for cruising in the Bordeaux region is to learn more about the wines and to visit famous wineries, known worldwide for their award-winning vintages. Small towns and villages with cobblestone streets and medieval churches, castles and other fascinating buildings are in abundance. The port of departure, Bordeaux in the Aquitaine of France is also a great city to explore as it is relatively small, easy to walk about and the ship spends a few days docked near the center of town as part of the cruise experience. The evening illuminations tour of Bordeaux is very worthwhile as well and of course the shopping is fantastic! We particularly enjoyed the gorgeous town of St Emilion with its ancient monolithic Church and many wine bars and tasting rooms reached by wandering along quaint cobblestone streets and traipsing often up and down quite steep walkways. The itinerary covers such storied regions and vineyards as Margaux, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau d’Yquem, Pauillac, Sauternes and more. If food and wine are your thing then you can indulge in a totally decadent week of eating far too much fois gras and other local delicacies and tasting some of the world’s finest wines – of many varieties.

FRANCE | RIVER CRUISING

Daily tours were offered to a variety of chateaux for tastings and guests could also choose to do bicycle tours from winery to winery and enjoy artisanal lunch and wine pairings too. Another impressive shore excursion was to the Blaye Fortress which dates back to 1677. Because of the nature of the region you are able to sail up and down several rivers close to the Bordeaux estuary which leads out to the Atlantic Ocean so if you have river cruised before then this will be a somewhat different experience. And the tides are a big part of the ship’s ability to enter certain parts of the river so one has to be prepared to spend time on Uniworld’s coaches which are at hand ready to take guests to and from their tours, to visit wineries and to take one even further afield on market day to the gorgeous city of Bergerac and to Perigord in the Dordogne. Our Uniworld river cruise was an exceptional experience and a wonderful way to explore this heavenly and muchlauded region of France, famed for its cuisine, gastronomic delights and absolutely superb wine. A winning combination in every way. n For more information and to book your Uniworld Boutique River Cruise, call your Vacations Specialist.

the importance of welcoming paying guests became an attractive prospect for a mellower government. Gradually, resorts opened and visitors began to arrive. Cuba is a great favorite with Canadians, Brits and many western Europeans and many American visitors are now taking advantage of “people-to-people educational tours” run by Apple Vacations and licensed by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). These tours offer a deep insight into life in Cuba, designed to give travelers the opportunity to engage with Cuban artists, farmers and health-care professionals. Another interesting way to see Cuba – and to contribute to its rebirth and rebuilding – is to experience a voluntourism cruise with Carnival Corporation’s Fathom program. Instead of onboard Broadway-style shows and casino nights during the cruise, guests will enjoy training for the in-port activities in Cuba, Spanish language lessons and an introduction to the island’s music, art and culture. Once ashore, guests will take part in activities to help local people and will enjoy an opportunity to make personal connections.

F YOU LOVED YOUR CHILDHOOD fairy tales, you’ll appreciate the magic that awaits you in Havana, Cuba. Like Sleeping Beauty, this once-gracious colonial city has taken several decades to awaken from the long sleep of communism on the island. Today, with governmental restrictions lightening, and relations with the United States improving, Cuba is experiencing if not a boom, at least a big boost in tourism. For the first time, a major cruise line – the Italian-owned MSC Cruises – has chosen to homeport a ship in Havana and a second ship, the MSC Armonia will join her later this year. The itineraries include stops in Montego Bay, Grand Cayman, Cozumel and other favorite Caribbean ports. Since December 2015, the MSC Opera has spent several days each week docked in Havana, and the two ships will soon offer unprecedented access to the fascinating old city. More than fifty years ago – New Year’s Eve, 1959 – the liberation forces of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara ousted the government and began a new era in Cuban history. For many years, few visitors came to the island. It wasn’t until the mid-1990s that the rebirth of tourism began. As the Cuban sugar cane economy dwindled,

While the beach destinations offer sun and fun, a day or more in Havana is a must-do and can quite literally be a trip into the past – particularly if you do your touring in one of those meticulously maintained 1950s cars! For many sun lovers who head to Cuba, the hot spots are the sugary white sand beaches north of Holguin and of course, those in Cayo Coco. One of the most beautiful of all Cuban beach resort areas, Cayo Coco lies in the northern area of Ciego de Ávila province and is best known for the unusually blue waters surrounding that part of the island. Bubblegum pink flamingos like it as much as the tourists do, so it’s an endless photo op. Varadero is probably the best known and most popular of Cuba’s beach destinations and features a full-range of hotels and resorts, many of them all-inclusive. If your ideal getaway includes lots of sand, sun and salsa music, Varadero is your best choice. The people are friendly, the snorkeling is good, the rum flows freely and with well-recognized hotel chains such as Iberostar, Barcelo and Paradisius offering luxurious beachfront resorts you’re assured of top quality accommodation. Holguin is another popular beach get-away choice. Called the birthplace of Cuban music and located in the northerly part of the island on the Atlantic Ocean, Holguin’s six beaches are known for their warm temperatures and great water sports. While the beach destinations offer sun and fun, a day in the Sleeping Beauty city of Havana is a must-do and can quite literally be a trip into the past – particularly if you do your touring in one of the meticulously maintained 1950s cars for which the city is so famous. Trade embargos largely stopped the importation of new cars more than fifty years ago so necessity has made a virtue of automobile maintenance! You’ll never travel in a better-loved

vintage taxi anywhere in the world. Let your driver/guide take you to see the most important sights – the fort, the Cathedral of Saint Christopher of Havana, and of course, Plaza de la Revolución, where the facades of the offices of the Ministries of the Interior and Communications are dominated by matching steel memorials to the most beloved heroes of the Revolution: Che Guevara, with the quotation “Hasta la Victoria Siempre” (Until the Everlasting Victory, Always) and Camilo Cienfuegos, with the quotation “Vas bien, Fidel” (You’re doing fine, Fidel). The great irony of the place is that its original name was Civic Square and it was intended to glorify President Battista. Instead, Castro used the square for political rallies following the revolution. When you’ve seen the sights in your vintage cab, had a Mojito, heard ‘Via Con Dios’ sung a few times and had your photo taken with the colorful cigar smoking ladies who cruise the main squares, you’ll have experienced Havana. Then, for a deeper understanding of what makes Cuba the place it is, make a pilgrimage to the Che Guevara Mausoleum in Santa Clara, Cuba. Housing the remains of the Marxist revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara and sixteen of his followers killed during Guevara’s 1967 attempt to spur a Bolivian uprising, this memorial showcases not only a 22 ft. bronze statue of Che, and a collection of his belongings but also encapsulates for the visitor all the passion that was once responsible for the birth of revolutionary Cuba. n
