Welcome to Centre Region Parks & Recreation

W

hat do we write about that hasn't already been said during the last nine months? None of us have experienced what we're experiencing these days from distant holiday dinners to wearing masks at public events to changing our routines and habits!

Our Agency has been hit hard like other community businesses. Just after we opened our summer camp registration, we found ourselves providing hundreds of refunds to concerned parents.

"What were we going to do for summer camps?" It took us a good six-eight weeks to "figure it out" with the rest of the community. "How were we going to shift our services and provide safe camps, family fun nights, open the pools, and play some sports?" While we couldn't operate all that we typically do in the summer and fall, our team really did a great job in providing safe programming with COVID-19 safety protocols in place.

I can't say enough about our Parks Operations team who stayed in the parks all year keeping them clean, safe, and ready for the highest amount of foot traffic our local parks have seen in years! If you see any of our Parks Operations staff this Winter or Spring, please, from a distance, give them a "shout out" and thank them for a job well done!

In the meantime, we, like all of you, are watching the news and data, as we continue to evaluate what programs and events we'll be able to host in 2021. We wish you all health and happiness during this strange time, and we hope to see you in the parks!

Each participating municipality (5) appoints one volunteer representative to serve a five-year term on the Centre Region Parks & Recreation Authority, plus one representative of the State College Area School District is appointed by State College Borough Council.

The Authority meets monthly on the third Thursday of each month at 12:15 PM. During the winter, the meetings are held at the COG Building and in good weather, the Authority will meet at various parks. The schedule is posted on the COG website if you’d like to join us! L’il Striders (3-4 yrs.)

Look at that face! Oh, the joy of mastering a balance bike! Your child can soon be balancing with the best of them. L'il Striders is full of games, activities and fun as little riders, ages 3-4, learn how to ride on two wheels. The curriculum is built around five 45-minute sessions sure to ignite a passion for riding. Upon completion of the course, children will have the balance and bike handling skills to be on their way to riding on two wheels. Bikes are included for class use. Your kids will have a blast getting their hands ooey and gooey while creating artwork, completing science experiments, and playing messy! Parent participation is encouraged. A Walk With Grief A Walk With Grief is not an exercise program but instead a time of coming together with others who are grieving a loss and...walking. Walking to move grief from the inside to the outside. Walking to benefit from physical activity. Walking to connect with the healing aspects of nature. And walking to know you're not alone. Ride your bike even after the temperatures drop. Winter Riding 101 is a free class that offers tips and tricks to help you extend your cycling season for a few weeks in fall or through the entire winter. We will cover topics from gloves to gear and teach you how to stay warm, safe, and in good condition (both you and your bike, that is) until spring returns. We will cover the following topics: what to wear, staying visible in dark conditions, gear options, winter bike maintenance techniques, and bikes on mass transit.

Start Smart Basketball Start Smart Basketball is an active outdoor program that will take place with each family unit (one parent and one child) working on skills together at a social distance from other family units. Start Smart Basketball teaches children, and their adult, the basic motor skills necessary to play organized basketball while they work one-onone and spend quality time together. The program focuses on teaching skills in dribbling/ball handling, passing/ catching, shooting and running/agility without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Each participant leaves with two mini basketballs to continue practicing at home.

Adult Sports and Leagues

Adult Sand Volleyball League Season: April & May; There are two divisions with Division 1 being the more competitive option.

Matches will be played at Circleville Park's sand volleyball courts. The Captain's Meeting will be held on Monday, March 22, 6 PM; location TBD. Division I: Tuesdays & Thursdays; Division II: Mondays & Wednesdays. Fee: $100 per team

Men’s Softball League

Season: April to mid-August Act Now! March 1 deadline for team registrations! Openings are available for additional teams in this popular league. Team fees will be announced at the meeting, but are estimated to be $1,000 per team. The Captain's Meeting will be held on Monday, March 15, 6 PM; location TBD.

Women’s Slow Pitch Softball League

Trek the trails together with your tyke! Explore something new at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center with this six-week, hour-long, outdoor program led by a Millbrook Marsh Naturalist. Tyke Hikes incorporate short, hands-on activities, nature play and stimulates curiosity in the surrounding natural environment. Program held outdoors rain or shine-please dress for the weather; masks are required to be worn during the program when physical distancing is not possible. Registration is required and is limited to one adult chaperone per participant.

NATURE PROGRAMS

Learn how to turn your kitchen and yard waste into black gold. Backyard composting is an easy, inexpensive, and natural process that transforms your kitchen and garden waste into valuable, nutrient-rich food for your garden while keeping these organic wastes out of our landfills. Join us to learn the basics of backyard composting: why it's important to compost, what to add and not to add to a compost pile, how to maintain a compost pile, and how to use finished compost. Led by Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority and Centre Region Refuse and Recycling Program staff.

Links to the program will be sent no later than the week prior to the class. Attendees will receive a voucher for an Earth Machine composter compliments of the Centre Region Council of Governments' Refuse and Recycling Program. Composter distribution and pick up will be by appointment and will take place within a week after the class. Advance registration is required, at least one week in advance.

Whether celebrated or not, fairies have always lived on the edge of our realities and in the beds of our gardens! Bring fairy tales to life in your own backyard while creating memories you will cherish for a lifetime. The possibilities for your fairy garden are limited only by your imagination. Rec In The Parks Summer Camp

2020 was a successful summer for our new Rec In The Parks Summer Camp program and we are thrilled to bring it back in 2021!

We will be increasing the number of campers, while staying within our established COVID-19 protocols. Rec In The Parks is a fabulous opportunity for rising 1st-5th graders, to enjoy terrific activities, wild and crazy games, and awesome arts and crafts, with time for lunch built in. This is a walk-in/bike-in/drop-off program, and camp will be held outdoors every day. Rec In The Parks will be held at two parks throughout the summer, rotating each week. Try one or try them all! All health and safety protocols will be enforced based on the guidelines from the CDC, the PA Dept. of Health, and the American Camp Association. More details will be provided in our February Summer Camp Guide.

You can have your yard "egged" for your very own private egg hunt! The Easter Bunny, hosted by CRPR Staff, will visit your home in the evening hours and hide your eggs; you'll be provided a date and estimated time and you'll be able to provide guidance on hiding locations! This event is open to those who live in the State College Borough, and the Townships of College, Ferguson, Harris, and Patton. Deadline to secure your "egging" is March 19. ACTIVE ADULT CENTER COVID-19 UPDATE By now, all of us are well versed in COVID-19 and its effects on area businesses, parks and recreation activities, facilities, and programs, and so much more!

The Center re-opened August 19 with limited services. Our re-opening, exciting no doubt, remains very limited as we ensure that our COVID-19 safety plans are working for all of our participants and our staff. We are currently open on Wednesdays for in-person programming and on Fridays for outings only (meeting at the outing site; the Center is not open).

For the single day we are open, we are offering a meal program, very limited group programming, and will have COVID-19 safety protocols in place for each activity we schedule. In addition, we may have a very abbreviated schedule through the holiday season. The best way to get that schedule inforamtion will be to check our website pages (https://www.crpr.org/active-adult-center) or to call the Center directly at 814-231-3076. So, bear with us a bit longer while we manage this limited schedule. We want to keep all of you safe and healthy, while providing the social and physical programming in a manner that keeps all of us healthy.

Enjoying Winter...In Nature (Live Online) We can have a beautiful Winter, and stay healthy, but it takes some new habits, patterns, and practices; ones we can learn from the Nordic countries. In this six-week class, we will learn to experience nature in winter in our backyards, in our local parks and on an overnight camping retreat! YES! overnight in a tent (with heat) if you want the challenge! Friluftsliv is the Norwegian concept of “outdoor living,” or embracing the natural outdoors whatever the weather.

“It encompasses everything from cross-country skiing through a local park to mountain biking in the snow,” says Synne Kvam, the communications manager at Norsk Friluftsliv, Norway's association of outdoor organizations. But this notion of “free air life,” as it translates in English, is about much more than the activity alone. “Relaxing, being in andobserving the quiet of nature, even enjoying the smell of coffee cooking over a campfire,” says Kvam. “These are also considered friluftsliv.”

Walking In The Parks Interested in stretching your legs and power walking in the parks? Centre Region Parks and Recreation recently updated its Find Your Park tab on its website, https://www.crpr.org/find-your-park.

If you haven't visited this tab, we have all the area parks listed by amenities such as pavilions, trails, playgrounds, and courts. We recently updated the listings for trail distances in some of our larger parks! The Find Your Park map also includes street addresses and links to Google Maps if you're not sure where all of the parks are located.

So, break-up your walking routine and visit some of the parks' walking trails! We've got short, long, level, hilly, paved, unpaved, and measured options. Once on the Find Your Park Map, you'll be able to search via amenities and then click on a particular park. You'll then see photos or maps like those to the right.

IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION GENERAL • Most programs have limited enrollment. Registration is accepted on a “first-come, first-serve” basis. Registrations are processed in the order they are received at the CRPR office, and program/event fees must be paid at the time of registration.

• How to read Program Fees: Resident Fee (R): For residents of State College Borough & the Twps. of College, Ferguson, Harris and Patton.

Nonresident Fee (NR): For residents of all other municipalities.

No registrations or payments can be accepted by CRPR instructors, unless specific info. is provided within a program description.

• CRPR reserves the right to adjust program meeting schedules, pending weather conditions and facility availability.

• REFUNDS If a refund request is made at least 7 calendar days prior to the start of the program / camp week, a full refund (less a $5 processing fee) is provided for the • program.
