elcome to the 2018 Winter/Spring Active Guide! We’re so happy that you’ve opened the cover and are starting to explore our program selections!

If you plan to make some New Year’s Resolutions, we can help you! If it’s time to move a little more, we have a fitness class for you! If you’d just like to get outside and enjoy the outdoors, think about one of our Marsh hikes or birdwatching explorations! Maybe your plans include riding your bike and investigating some of our great local parks? If so, take a peek at some of our bicycle classes and you’ll be riding soon, in all weather! This guide’s map contains the area’s bike paths and routes as well as locations of the region’s neighborhood, community, and regional parks! Or if your goal is to enjoy our fantastic outdoor pools next summer, take advantage of our winter discount and secure your 2018 Pool Pass before April 30!

If you’ve noticed, there is a brand-new logo for the Agency! You’ll be hearing more about this, but this is your first glance of our new Agency branding. This brand image, created by Graphics & Design in State College, better represents all of our service areas and facilities and the shapes give the feel of movement and active lifestyles and the color is bright and exciting! We’re very proud of this new brand and will be talking more about it in the next few weeks!

Centre Region Parks & Recreation Authority Each participating municipality (5) appoints one volunteer representative to serve a 5-year term on the Centre Region Parks & Recreation Authority, plus one representative of the State College Area School District is appointed

by State College Borough Council.

The Authority meets monthly on the third Thursday of each month at 12:15pm. During the winter, the meetings are held at the COG Building and in good weather, the Authority will meet at various parks. The schedule is posted on the COG website.

Winter Activities Ice Skating & Hockey at Blue Spring Park

Cabin Fever? Get ready to bundle up and head out to the Village Ice Rink and enjoy some ice skating or a game of hockey! Weather permitting, the rink is planned to open in late-December!

Bitty Ballet Does your little one dance around the house and to all kinds of music?

Think they might enjoy trying some dance lessons? If so, Bitty Ballet may be the perfect option for your wee one! Bitty Ballet is a six-week preschool ballet program for 2.5-5 year olds and is the best way to introduce young children to dance and creative movement. L’il Striders Through a grant from Strider Balance Bikes, CRPR is thrilled to offer once again this learn-to-ride class for 3-5 year olds. This class teaches kids how to ride on two wheels. The curriculum is built around five 45-minute sessions of learning, fun, socialization, and instruction sure to ignite a passion for riding.

Upon completion of the course, children will have the balance and bike handling skills to be on their way to riding on two wheels.

KIDVenture Explorers: Entering 1st -3rd Grades Send your kids on the hunt for new explorations this summer by enrolling them in the KIDVenture Explorers Camp! Explorers will have the opportunity to make a splash at Park Forest Pool, take field trips to some awesome places, be creative with various arts and crafts, play games galore, and so much more! All of these explorations will be with our highly-trained staff and without spending a night away from home! 7:30 AM-5:30 PM, June 18-August 10 KIDVenture Challengers: Entering 4th-6th Grades New for 2018! KIDVenture Challengers is a camp experience designed specifically for our “senior” campers! Your kids will experience a summer like no other with our highlyqualified staff, who will be prepared with a world of adventures, challenges, experiences, and FUN! The details are still being finalized and are on secret lockdown, but will be released the week of January 22. Parents, we will still hold camp at Park Forest Middle School, but with a separate Challengers staff and schedule. Wonders of Nature Art Camp

Join local artist Susan Nicholas-Gephart to explore the natural world and to connect to the environment through outdoor painting! Young artists will use their senses to discover the wonders nature offers while applying their creativity to sketch and paint their own masterpieces. Campers will have the opportunity to work with different mediums including pencil sketching, watercolor, and pastels; and will leave camp with lifelong skills to continue to create beautiful pieces of art. Do you like treasure hunts? If the answer is yes, then this camp is for you! Spend the week exploring the Centre Region and discover hidden “treasures” (geocaches) you never knew where there! People place caches in secret places with GPS coordinates and we hunt until we find them.

Campers will learn the basics needed for geocaching and about the website to find additional caches in the region, as well as caches all over the county and beyond. The camp will create their own cache to hide in a secret location for future Geocachers to find! GPS units provided for use at camp. Camp is hosted by Millbrook Marsh Nature Center.

Fly Fishing Camp

Centre County has some of the best trout streams in the world! Campers learn the lifelong hobby of fly-fishing with hands-on instruction from patient local fly fishers while fishing local ponds and world renowned streams. Casting, stream reading and stream ethics are just a few of the techniques campers learn throughout the week. Rods and reels are provided for use during camp. Campers should dress for the weather, bring protective eyewear (sunglasses) and pack a snack and water bottle. All participants will receive a one year Trout Unlimited Membership at no additional cost thanks to The Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited. A swim safety evaluation will be scheduled for all campers prior to the start of camp.

Fly Tying Camp

Become in tune with the stream. Campers will learn the lifelong hobby of fly tying.

Conduct a stream study in local waterways. Learn about the macroinvertebrates life cycle and how to follow the hatch. Tie many different types of flies that you can take home. All materials provided. Pack a snack and water bottle. All participants will receive a one year Trout Unlimited Membership at no additional cost thanks to The Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

Outdoor Explorer Adventures

For adventurers who wish to explore unique habitats within the Centre Region. During this exciting camp, hikers will discover birds, native plants, and waterways at various recreation areas, such as Black Moshannon and Bald Eagle State Parks as well as other destinations. Great mini adventures at places you can explore with a daypack.

Children should be prepared to hike on the first day and to spend each afternoon exploring different environments. Please dress for the weather.

Knee High Naturalist Summer Camp For the young adventure who is excited about getting hands-on with nature! Come to Millbrook Marsh to discover wonders of the outdoors through leader led activities, games, songs, and unstructured nature play.

Children will explore the marsh and learn about some of the animals and plants that inhabit the wetland ecosystem.

Learn about the realities of bike commuting, traffic safety principles, layering and dealing with weather, what to wear so you don’t arrive at work a sweaty mess, what kind of gear you’ll need to haul a change of clothes or ride at night, how and where to lock your bike, and much more. Basics of Bike Touring Have you ever wanted to tour by bike, but don’t know where to start? If so, this class is for you!

Catherine, who is a veteran bicycle camper, and Brian, who loves planning and touring, will help guide you through the process. We will review the laws; suggest what to take and how to pack it; tell you how to select routes and the best ways to ship your bike; and teach you how to make basic repairs. This is a classroom workshop; attendees do not need to bring a bike. You don’t even need to be planning a bicycle tour yet. Perhaps this class will motivate you to finally do it!

Bike Maintenance 101 If you are new to cycling or just want to learn more about caring for your bike, then this class is for you! Learn how to fix flats, clean and lube a chain, go over maintenance tips and answer mechanical questions. These skills will save you time, money and give you a much better understanding, and appreciation, of your bike. If time permits we will cover additional topics. Light refreshments will be provided by Freeze Thaw. No need to bring your bike to this educational class. Classes will be held at Freeze Thaw Cycles, 109 S. Allen St.

Adult Learn to Ride This class is for adults or teens who have either not yet learned how to ride a bike, or learned a long time ago, but want a refresher on the basics of balancing, pedaling and steering. Our instructors are friendly, patient, and will help you get off to a great start in a secure, non-judgmental environment.

A working bicycle and helmet are required in order to participate in this class, but if you do not have your own and are unable to borrow them we can arrange for a low cost rental for you at the class.

All Ages Instructional Classes continued Winter Bike Riding 101 Feel confident riding your bike, even after the temperatures drop! Winter Bike Riding 101 is a free class that offers tips and tricks to help you extend your cycling season for a few weeks in fall or through the entire winter. We will cover topics from gloves to gear and teach you how to stay warm, safe, and in good condition (both you and your bike, that is) until spring returns.

We will cover the following topics: what to wear, staying visible in dark conditions, gear options, winter bike maintenance techniques, and bikes on mass transit.

Teen Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt Youth, Get Out and Ride! – Introduction to Mountain Biking If your child is confident riding their bike in the neighborhood, and wants to go “offroad”, this series will be a great introduction. Over the course of three rides, participants will learn basic bike handling skills, simple maintenance and trail etiquette. So come on out and enjoy the outdoors on two wheels! A “Get ready to ride” bike clinic will be led by Freeze Thaw Cycles. Children will need to know how to ride a bike already and have a bike in good working order. All participants will need to dress appropriately (close-toed shoes and weather appropriate attire) and wear a helmet at all times while on their bike. Introduction to Quickstart Tennis

This instructional program is designed for youngsters who are interested in learning the game of tennis. Age-appropriate drills and games are used to improve hand-eye coordination, as well as very basic tennis skills. All equipment is provided, although players may bring their own racket. Why are wetlands so important? What is a watershed? Learn about the importance of wetlands and how they are natural filters. Explore the marsh and understand this important habitat, watersheds, and the area where we live. Participants will explore the marsh, learn about wetlands and their importance, study the stream and its creatures, understand the history of the area, and much more! (Activities may vary based on age.) Fall 2018 - Spring 2019 The Puddle Jumpers program for preschoolers mixes outdoor exploration with fundamental learning through hands-on experiences at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center!

This twice a week, drop off program offers threehour sessions of nature learning for kids ages 3-5, including unstructured, imaginative exploration, and structured, hands-on learning. Kids should bring a snack each day and dress for the weather. Each session is different, so sign-up for both!

Early Morning Bird Walks Start your day off right by exploring Millbrook Marsh to see and hear the birds that are migrating to and through the Centre Region.

Walks are moderate and led by Millbrook Marsh Naturalists and local bird enthusiasts.

Millbrook Marsh Nature Center Activities Making and Using Plant Tinctures Through indiscriminate use of pharmaceuticals we humans are breeding drug-resistant bacteria and viruses. By contrast, plants have learned to fight pathogens over the millennia by synthesizing far more complex compounds. We humans can use these to fight disease, strengthen our immune system, and improve our health. In this workshop Gene Bazan and Tania Slawecki will focus on the most potent herbal antivirals and antibiotics. Learn how to grow and harvest these, and prepare and use their tinctures. You will be able to sample a variety of preparations, and learn how to use kitchen tools and supplies to prepare these. Later we will invite you to visit our biointensive mini-farm in Lemont to see some of these plants growing.

Aquatic Program Policies

Classes fill quickly; registration for

sequential classes cannot be guaranteed.

Lifeguarding (American Red Cross Certification)

This course teaches the skills and provides the knowledge necessary to become a professional lifeguard. Candidates must be 15 years (by the last day of class) and pass a swimming skills pretest. Successful candidates receive certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Candidates must register and pay prior to taking the pretest. A refund is provided if the candidate does not pass the pretest, less a $5 admin fee. Please note: This course will require students to complete approximately seven (7) hrs. of online coursework; there is an additional $35 fee for the online portion. The deadline to register is April 6. The High School pool is at the west end of the North Building. Enter the doors on the left side of the large plaza. If you successfully complete this program and work for CRPR for the full pool season, the Agency will reimburse the course fees at 50%. The skills pre-test will be on Wednesday, April 11 at 5:00pm and will include: • 300 yard swim • 2 minutes treading water using only legs • Retrieve 10 lb. brick in 10’ deep water

Springboard Diving

Learn to dive or refine your skills! This class will teach the basic diving skills or help to improve the skills that you have. Healthy Steps is a comprehensive, evidence-based, fall-prevention program for adults ages 50 and over. You’ll sculpt your upper and lower body and burn major calories with rhythmic boxing and kickboxing combinations. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) spikes your heart rate and scorches fat. Next, move into PiYo and enjoy the low-impact, high-intensity moves of PiYo Live focusing on core conditioning, as well as lengthening and strengthening your muscles with moves inspired by yoga and pilates. Centre Region Parks & Recreation is pleased to offer the opportunity for you to show your support for active recreation by purchasing a 4’ x 6’ vinyl banner at the John Hess Softball Complex and Oak Hall Regional Park. IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION GENERAL • Most programs have limited enrollment. Registration is accepted on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Registrations are processed in the order they are received at the CRPR office, and program/event fees must be paid at the time of registration.

• How to read Program Fees: Resident Fee (R): For residents of State College Borough & the Twps. of College, Ferguson, Harris & Patton.

Nonresident Fee (NR): For residents of all other municipalities.

• No registrations or payments can be accepted by CRPR instructors, unless specific info. is provided within a program description.

• CRPR reserves the right to adjust program meeting schedules, pending weather conditions and facility availability.

REFUNDS • If a refund request is made at least 7 calendar days prior to the start of the program / camp week, a full refund (less a $5 processing fee) is provided for the program.

• If a refund request is due to injury or illness after a program starts, a prorated refund is provided (a doctor’s excuse may be required).

• If a program or class is canceled, a prorated refund or credit is provided.
