Youth Instructional Classes Muck-N-Mess

L'il Striders

Balance bikes simplify what small children have to think about when first learning to ride. L'il Striders is built around five 45-minute sessions of learning, fun, socialization, and instruction sure to ignite a passion for riding.

Once they’ve developed balance, it’s easier to stick some pedals on and teach them the pedaling motion and how to stop. Balance bikes are included for class use.

Youth Flag Football

The Centre Region Flag Football League is operated by Centre Region Parks and Recreation for children going into grades 1st-7th. The league is for children at all skill levels with an emphasis on improving skills in a safe, competitive, player-focused environment.

The league is committed to providing a positive football experience in a safety-first program through USA Football's Head's Up Football Program. All coaches will be trained in Head's Up Football procedures and will be required to complete a Coaching Certification through USA Football. This training includes techniques on how to properly teach football skills with an emphasis on player safety. The league will also have USA Football certified Player Safety Coaches that are trained to ensure that Heads Up safety protocols are respected. The league will operate three times per week with games on Sunday afternoons and practices Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Practices in August will take place at Spring Creek Park. Practices and games during September and October will be at Oak Hall Regional Park. The fee includes a jersey and shorts to keep!

Start Smart Football

Start Smart Football is a developmentally-appropriate introductory parent/guardian-child-based football program for children 4-6 years old. Pairs work together to develop individual skills. Start Smart Football prepares children and their parents for organized football without the threat of competition or the fear of injury.

Age-appropriate equipment is used for teaching throwing, catching, kicking/punting, and running/agility. Each parent/child pair gets to keep the equipment that includes a football, kicking tee, flag belt, and participant manual.

Adult Sports and Leagues Summer Tennis League

The league is designed to provide play for people with busy schedules. You will receive a season schedule and have one week to play each match. Matches can be played at any tennis court on the day/time that works best for the scheduled players/teams. Each person that registers will be provided with one can of new tennis balls, which can be picked up at the Agency. Balls will be provided for the season-ending tournament as well.

To register: You can register for the singles, doubles, or mixed doubles sections, but you may only register for one division. (e.g. You cannot register for singles in both recreational and intermediate divisions.) For doubles, only one person from a team needs to register for the team players. If you don’t have a partner, please use the program.

ADULT SPORTS & LEAGUES

Is your racquet re-strung and ready for play? Join us for the Intramural Tennis League and you’ll be playing all summer long. Three divisions are available and include: • Recreational - This division is for newer players who want to improve their match play and tennis skills including hitting accuracy, speed on the court, and serving. Score will be kept during play, but reporting will be optional in this division for each individual/team.

(This division would be comparable to players who are around levels 2.5-3 on the USTA rating system.)

• Intermediate - This division is for players who want to play competitively, but who may still be working on hitting accuracy and improving serves. Players in this division are fairly consistent, with moderate ball control. (This division would be comparable to players who are around levels 3-3.5 on the USTA rating system.)

• Competitive - This division is for players who have played tennis in the past competitively. Players in this division generally have directional control over the ball and are able to utilize different types of strokes during match play.

(This division would be comparable to players who are level 4+ on the USTA rating system.)

Millbrook Marsh Nature Center Activities

Construction of the new Diane Kerly Welcome Pavilion and Phase II of the Spring Creek Education Building is exciting and creates the need for extra care and attention. For everyone's safety, all Millbrook Marsh visitors should use caution while on-site, take notice of moving construction vehicles in the parking areas, paths, and fields, and keep out of the fenced-off areas. Restrooms and the lobby in the Spring Creek Education Building (Phase I) will remain open during Nature Center office hours and programs; all other education building areas are closed until construction is complete (anticipated by the end of 2023). Temporary shutdown of facilities is also necessary at various times during construction. Project information, including closures and photos, will be posted on the CRPR website and can be accessed using the QR Code above.

The Nature Center grounds, boardwalk, and trails will remain open to the public during the construction of the facilities. Please excuse our mess and use caution while visiting Millbrook Marsh. Rec On The Go Family Game Nights

Gather your family and friends and meet the CRPR staff at your neighborhood park on Wednesday evenings for some good old fashioned family fun! As part of Centre Region Parks and Recreation's participation in Centre Foundation's #CentreGives community fundraising event, we are hosting a Pre-Season Plunge at Welch Pool.

Be the FIRST to swim at the pool this summer! Join us as we empty the Rec on the Go truck with all of our fun yard games, available in and around the pool. Enjoy music while you swim or play! The Wibit will be in the water along with our most awesome climbing wall! The slides will also be running! Updates will be posted on the website. Online tickets will be available during the Centre Gives Campaign on May 10th & 11th.

Annual CRPR Kids on Wheels Parade

Hey kids, show your patriotism and be part of the FREE Annual CRPR Kids on Wheels Parade on July 4. Welch Pool Cardboard Regatta

Build your own boat, and race it at Welch Pool! Boats must be made from cardboard, paperboard, and duct tape ONLY (colored duct tape is OK). Boats may be a maximum of 7' long and 4' wide.

Paddles/propulsion must also be homemade using the same materials (or use your hands/feet). Race course will be one length of the pool (25 yards). Racers will be divided by division and category and may be separated into heats. AWARDS: (1) 1st place in each division for the fastest boat (2) Best overall boat design(3) Best overall costume (4) The Titanic Award for most spectacular sinking We will host pre-judging at 8:30 AM (all entries must be present) and the races will begin thereafter. Come and play bingo from your car or lawn chair to help raise funds for the Active Adult Center! We're giving away cash prizes, with the last game being a JACKPOT prize of $200! Each regular game winner will have the chance to win cash!

The cost to play is $15 per car, no matter how many people you bring with you! Admission gets you 1 booklet of 10 games, 6 cards per game. You can purchase additional booklets for $10 each, online or by cash the day of the event, while supplies last. We will play 10 regular games total. Additional Early Bird Bingo game books, prize raffle tickets, and a 50/50 drawing tickets will also be available for purchase. Summer Swim Team

This competitive program, for ages 5-18, is offered at Welch and Park Forest Community Pools, Monday-Friday, June 6-July 27. Summer Swim Team teaches teamwork, cooperation, and healthy competition. Both teams are members of the Central Pennsylvania Swim League (CPSL), which holds meets on weekday evenings. Bubblemaker is as fun as it sounds--a chance for kids to blow bubbles by scuba diving! Children who are at least 8 years old can use scuba gear to breathe and swim underwater in the shallow part of the pool. In the Bubblemaker program, participants get a basic introduction to how to use scuba gear, how to clear a regulator and mask, and an overview of underwater breathing do’s and don’ts.

The Bubblemaker Crew-Pak (included with registration) contains mementos of the experience and is full of fun surprises, such as a kid-sized beach towel, logbook, certificate, temporary tattoo, decal and the adorable and popular Bubblemaker water toy.

The PADI Seal Team is for young scuba divers who are looking for action-packed fun in a pool by completing exciting AquaMissions. PADI Seal Team includes doing some cool stuff in the pool, meeting friends and sharing in the adventure of the underwater world. To join the PADI Seal Team, a child must be 8 years of age or older. AquaMissions 1-5, cover basic scuba diving skills, such as breathing underwater, clearing a mask of water, recovering a regulator and swimming around while experiencing the sensation of being weightless.

Each in-water session takes about an hour. After the diver complete these AquaMissions they will become a recognized PADI Seal Team Member. Your experience may also count toward the PADI Open Water Diver course when you’re old enough to participate in the course.

Active Adult Hiking Group

Studies show that spending time in nature boosts energy, improves immune function, concentration and mood, increases vitamin D and reduces stress. Hiking is beneficial to Active Adults and improves heart health, reduces muscle loss, keeps your body flexible and increases balance while preventing falls.

In the Centre Region we are fortunate to have so many natural spaces to enjoy, from local park trails and regional biking paths to multiple state forests and state parks just outside of State College. Join the Active Adult Hiking Group for weekly hikes in and around the Center Region to explore the beautiful trails this area has to offer! Hikers meet at the Westerly Parkway Shopping Plaza at 9 AM April through October, then 10 AM November through March.

Centre County Senior Games "Reboot"

The Centre County Senior Games has been a staple of the community for 20+ years. Last held in 2015, it's time for a "Reboot"! Join the Active Adult Center, the Office of Aging and Juniper Village for some friendly competition while participating in activities such as walking, swimming, cornhole, and a jigsaw puzzle challenge. Awards ceremony and picnic to be held at Juniper Village on Monday, June 26. Walking Event - Friday, May 19, Swimming Event - Friday, June 9, Jigsaw Puzzle Challenge - Monday, June 26. Master Gardeners

Have a love for plants and gardening? Then join us here at the Active Adult Center every other Tuesday, starting Tuesday, April 25th for a fun and interactive program with the Master Gardeners of Centre County. Each class highlights a different topic around the gardening and plant world from learning about houseplants, and how to care for them, to learning about butterflies and moths, dried and pounded flowers, gourds, pumpkins, seeds, spices, and everything in between. Each class offers an educational presentation followed by an interactive craft or game related to the gardening topic.

Enjoy a morning of fun, laughs and crafts as we explore the gardening and plant world!

Healthy Steps

This on-going program is designed to improve balance, flexibility, and strength, reducing the risk of falling. All equipment is provided. This class uses exercise bands, rubber balls and the occasional use of hand weights. Exercises are done in a chair or standing. Free classes are open to ages 55 and over and are held at the Active Adult Center in the Nittany Mall on Monday and Thursday mornings.

Med-Knit-ations: Knitting Our Hearts Back Together

When we’re grieving a loss, our hearts can feel like they’ve been broken apart. Here is an opportunity for you to knit your heart back together as well as bring joy to newborns. “Med-Knit-tations” is four sessions – each session is 90 minutes – where we will knit hats and/or sweaters for newborns in the beauty of the outdoors. No knitting experience is necessary! Knitting can be very meditative, and by making hats and sweaters for newborn babies, we hope it will provide a healing opportunity. CRPR, in partnership with Koch Funeral Home, will hold these sessions at the pavilions by the restrooms at Tudek Park. You will be responsible for providing knitting needles and yarn and will receive a list of the necessary supplies after registration.

Yoga in the Parks

A stronger and more flexible body is a more mobile body. During this 60-minute class, we will explore postures and exercises that will help you build strength and flexibility, both physically and mentally. Focusing on movements that mimic those of daily living with a touch of pilates and strength training in the mix just for fun, this class is suitable for beginners and experienced yogis alike. HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is a training technique in which you give all-out, one hundred percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. For this class, we will be using a 50 second intense period followed by 10 second rest period. The class is a 4 X 5 meaning four different intervals repeated five times. You will need a set of hand weights, a mat, and a chair (sometimes). This class is live-online through Zoom. About The Authority

The mission of the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Authority is to serve Centre Region residents of all ages throughout the year with a variety of recreation opportunities and access to facilities to enrich their lives through participation in programs, facility use, provision of leadership resources and technical assistance, and serving the participating municipalities' residents and groups.

The Authority membership includes five municipalities--the Borough of State College and the Townships of College, Ferguson, Harris, and Patton, and the State College Area School District. Each municipality appoints one volunteer representative to serve a five-year term, plus one representative from the State College Area School District who is appointed by State College Borough Council. In October 2011, the five participating municipalities re-authorized the future of the Authority for January 2012 through December 2061.

Many members of the Authority also participate in their municipality's Parks and Recreation Committee; this dual service provides a great conduit between the Authority/Agency and the municipality like Capital Improvement Projects, timelines of various park improvements, recommended programming for the community, policies and procedures, and more.

The Authority is a registered 501c3 non-profit and registered as a PA Bureau of Charitable Giving organization.
