LGAQ LGAQBorcelle President and Team Address Croydon's Infrastructure Challenges: Focus on Gilbert River Bridge and Doppler Radar

FOCUS POINTS On Tuesday, 23 January 2024, LGAQ President Mayor Mark Jamieson, CEO Alison Smith and Head of Advocacy Sarah Vogler came to Croydon to meet with Councilors and respond to any advocacy requests we may have. The Gilbert River bridge was at the top of the agenda as was the Doppler radar.

UPDATE!

Their visit was timely due to the damage at the Routh Creek bridge and they were able to experience first hand the issues we face when roads are cut.

Routh Creek is open again; one lane, with a speed limit of 40 km/hr in place. Etheridge Shire did a fantastic job in getting the bridge repaired as soon as possible! Great jobs, guys!

Born in Chinchilla and educated at Chinchilla Christian College, Holly McQuaid's journey took an exciting turn when she relocated to Croydon in February 2022.

Shortly after arriving, she embarked on a path of professional growth by securing the position of Trainee – Water Plant Operations. Demonstrating her dedication and skill, she successfully completed her studies and ascended to the role of Council's Water Treatment Plant Operator in November 2023. Beyond her professional pursuits, Holly is a vibrant individual with diverse interests. A passionate motorbike and horse rider, she dedicates her spare time to caring for cattle and contributing to her family's property.

Holly's zest for life extends to the thrill of competition, as evidenced by her secondplace win in the motorbike event at the 2022 Horse and Motor Bike Gymkhana. Embracing the adrenaline rush, she also engages in bull riding for the sheer enjoyment of the experience. As Holly approaches her 18th birthday in May, plans are underway for a joint birthday celebration with her cousin, when they arrive for a visit during the June school holidays. These festivities serve as a testament to not only her professional accomplishments but also her vibrant spirit and zest for life. Congratulations, Holly, on achieving remarkable milestones at such a young age. Your journey is an inspiration to many, and we look forward to witnessing your continued success and adventures.

Born in Sydney, George's life has been a journey across various parts of Australia, shaped by his father's military career that necessitated frequent relocations.

Following in his father's footsteps, George enlisted in the army straight out of high school. After discharging, he explored a few casual jobs and engaged in online studies, George transitioned to Croydon in 2017 after successfully applying for a Traineeship in Civil Construction, becoming Technical Officer in 2021. Notably, many may remember George's stroke of luck in winning a DeLorean DMC12 in the 'Classics for a Cause' classic car raffle back in 2021.

As an avid collector of model cars, particularly DeLoreans and VWs, the prized possession now holds a place of honour in his garage. Beyond his military and professional pursuits, George reveals a passion for scifi, with Star Trek ranking as his favourite. In contrast to his partner, renowned in Croydon for her cakes and sweet treats, George finds contentment in the simplicity of plain old chocolate. George's life story is a tapestry woven with diverse experiences, from military service to collecting classic cars, all while showcasing his technical expertise in contributing to our road reporting initiatives.

Passwords are passé - passphrases are longer and stronger t’s time to use passphrases instead. As we have increased our reliance on passwords, adversaries have developed increasingly sophisticated ways to crack them. In attempting to make passwords stronger, we have made them harder for humans to remember, and easier for machines to crack. Hence, the need for passphrases that are easy for humans to remember, and harder for machines to crack.

What is a passphrase? A passphrase uses four or more random words as your password. For example, ‘crystal onion clay pretzel’ or 'red house sky train'. The longer the passphrase, the harder it is for adversaries to crack. A unique, strong passphrase can better protect your account compared to a simple password. To create a strong passphrase you should consider making it: Long. Unpredictable. Unique. If a website or service requires a complex password including symbols, capital letters, or numbers, then you can include these in your passphrase.

How to create secure passphrases Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is one of the most effective ways to protect your accounts from cybercriminals. However if MFA is not available, then you should consider using a strong password or passphrase to protect your account.

Use a password manager to create and manage passwords

If you have multiple accounts with different passwords or passphrases, a password manager can help control them for you. A password manager is an application or program that stores passwords or passphrases for all of your accounts. With a password manager, you only need to remember one master password. You can also use a password manager to create secure, long and randomly generated passwords. The longer and more random, the better. Make sure to generate a different password for every account.

Create long passphrases - The longer your passphrase, the better.

As adversaries can crack a short password with very little effort or time, you can increase the time and effort it takes by using a passphrase instead. Aim to make your passphrases four or more random words, of at least 14 characters in total, whenever you can. For example, ‘red house sky train’, ‘sleep free hard idea’ or ‘crystal onion clay pretzel‘.

Create unpredictable passphrases

The less predictable your passphrase, the better. A passphrase in the form of a lyric, quote or sentence, like 'I don’t like pineapple on pizza.’, uses spaces and punctuation, which adds complexity. However, a sentence could also be predictable, because the language you use will have grammar and punctuation rules to follow. In English sentences, for example, it is predictable to have spaces between words, a capital letter at the beginning and a single character of punctuation at the end, like a full stop. Sentences can also be predictable in the placement of nouns, adjectives, verbs and so on. Using a random mix of unrelated words is far more unpredictable, and will produce a stronger passphrase. There are many ways to create a mix of random words. There are tools available on the internet that can help, or you could open to random pages in a dictionary or another book to select unrelated words.

Protect what protects you

Remember adversaries are opportunistic. Store and handle your passphrases carefully to avoid being compromised. Do not share your passphrases with anyone and be aware of your surroundings when using them in public. Use trusted Wi-Fi, trusted telecommunication networks or a Virtual Private Network (VPN) when accessing valuable accounts. Free public Wi-Fi, without the use of a VPN, can potentially expose your browsing activity. Log off and sign out of accounts when you finish using them. Think critically when answering phone calls, messages and emails. Are the senders really who they say they are? Be wary of requests for personal details, passphrases or financial details, particularly if the message sounds urgent. If you doubt the communicator's identity, delay immediate action. Re-establish communication later with the organisation using contact details you have found independently, using trusted sources.
