Supporting parent carers of children and young people with any kind of additional needs and disabilities aged 0-25 living in Croydon.

Transition Workshops Free online workshops designed to support parents of children and young people with disabilities from year 8 (aged approximately 13-14) up to age 25.

We are very pleased that we have received funding from Croydon Relief in Need to continue our work in delivering sessions & workshops that will support you in helping your child during their transition to adulthood.

Details of the 1st 4 sessions are enclosed, you are welcome to book any that would be helpful to you.

Please email Tansy to book. Online meeting links will be sent out closer to the session date.

After each session you will also be sent an evaluation / feedback form which we would be grateful if you would complete and return.

Workshop 1 Self-Advocacy for a Successful Transition Thursday 23 September 11 am - 2 pm This workshop aims to help you feel more empowered and resilient when working alongside professionals. How many meetings have you attended and left feeling unheard, more stressed and no further forward than you were before?

As your child becomes closer to leaving statutory education, there tends to be more meetings with professionals to decide your child’s future. This is such an important time to ensure that you are fully prepared to attend meetings feeling prepared, confident and knowing that you absolutely will be heard.

This session will Help you to recognise and build upon your existing strengths to make you a powerful advocate for your child Teach you how to request, and fully prepare for, any meeting with professionals (school, social services etc.)

Show you how to mind-map to prioritise your concerns and identify the very first step to take to get you out of overwhelm Ensure you understand how to request achievable and S.M.A.R.T outcomes for your child Give you pre-written templates for emails or letters which are easily amended and can be used every time you have a meeting

Workshop 2 Puberty, Sexuality & Relationships Wednesday 13 October 2021 10 am - 1 pm

Delivered by Dr Mark Brown, the founder of Special Help 4 Special Needs. Mark has over 30 years’ experience working with young people with neurodiverse issues and learning disabilities.

This session will arm you with support strategies to help your young adult and those around them to cope with puberty and beyond and includes

Having difficult conversations Contraception Consent How to support your young person to have positive and safe sexual expression Healthy relationships Boundaries Additional needs & sexuality

Workshop 3 Transitioning to Adult Social Care under The Care Act 2014 Thursday 11 November 2021 10 am - 1 pm

As your child transitions from the Children with Disabilities service and moves into Adult Social Services, different criteria are applied.

This workshop will include

Requesting a Social Care Needs Assessment for your young person Parent Carer Needs Assessment and how Croydon use the information Financial assessments and your young person’s financial contributions Direct Payments The Care Act 2014 – The important parts surrounding transition & assessment Your young person’s rights under The Care Act and other laws that may apply Your rights as a carer

Workshop 4 Person-Centred Planning Thursday 3rd February 2022 1 pm - 3 pm

This session will be delivered by Sue Utley from PiP @ Croydon Mencap. Sue is a Family Link Worker and has both personal and professional experience in supporting parents to ensure their child receives a person-centred plan.

This workshop is interactive, and includes

Understanding what Person-Centred planning is Why Person-Centred planning is so important for your child How to elicit your child’s views How to start creating your child’s Person-Centred Map
