Welcome to Coulsdon Sixth Form College’s prospectus for students looking to join us in September 2022.

There is real positivity surrounding the role of skills and education as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and at Coulsdon Sixth Form College we are proud to play a pivotal role in supporting our students with new opportunities and openings; whether the next step is higher education, or straight into the world of employment and careers.

Our philosophy is “Careers not Courses” as our exceptional staff seek to empower and inspire our students to carve out their own individual pathways into fulfilling employment and careers at whatever level you decide to enter the workforce.

Coulsdon Sixth Form College is a great place for young people to study. We are very experienced and successful in supporting our students to advance their knowledge, understanding and skills, to the very highest level so achieving their qualifications with the best result possible. They can then move on to the next step of their lives – whether that is university, an apprenticeship or employment. We pride ourselves on putting the student first in everything we do.

We offer a wide range of subjects and programmes. This means you can choose to study just A Levels or just BTECs or mix A Levels with BTECs. We have found this offers students much more choice and flexibility when it comes to creating their own personalised timetable that they engage with and fully commit to.

In an exciting new development, we will offer T Levels from September 2022. T Levels are the gold standard technical option equivalent to studying three A Levels. They provide a high-quality technical alternative to academic exams and will suit students who enjoy combining classroom and work placed learning.

All of our teachers and support staff have relevant industry experience and expertise and are specialists in educating and supporting sixth form students They will support you not just to achieve your qualification at the highest level, but also to develop skills such as team work, resilience and independent study skills which you’ll need to be successful in the world of work or Higher Education.

It’s all about Careers not Courses – creating employer and career led pathways for our students.

As a specialist Sixth Form College, not only do we offer a wider choice of A Level subjects and vocational programmes compared to school sixth forms, students can also ‘mix and match’ these to suit their specific interests, abilities and aspirations.

As well as excellent academic support from teachers, every student has a dedicated personal tutor and access to learning support, careers advice, financial advice and counselling. All our staff are specialists in working with 16-19 year olds and are committed to helping each and every student to achieve their potential. With a 100% pass rate over recent years, students make excellent progress, enabling them to go to the university of their choice, direct into employment or an Apprenticeship.

The Ofsted grades at last inspection for Coulsdon Sixth Form College are Good. Coulsdon Sixth Form College has seen increasing levels of student satisfaction with teaching and learning rated highly by students who feel they make good progress in development of their English, maths and ICT skills alongside their programme of study. The college has seen increasing numbers of high grades across it courses with students being able to take their next step confidently.

Coulsdon Sixth Form College is a hub of activity outside the classroom, and alongside your courses there are many opportunities for you to meet other people, learn new skills, and have fun.

Clubs, societies and events The Student Experience team organise a whole host of activities on a regular basis, including table tennis, football, yoga, debating club, songwriting, as well as regular quiz and bingo sessions, there’s always something to join in with, and they’re all free!

Throughout the year we celebrate a range of awareness events and themes, giving you the opportunity to learn about and engage with social issues and causes.

Make your voice count The Student Voice is an important part of all College decisions, and our Student Executive team is elected from the student body to provide valuable feedback on issues facing the College community, and to influence what we do and how we do it.

You could also be part of our Student Council by becoming the Student Representative for your course. Gathering the feedback and views of your fellow students on their student experience, you will participate in termly Student Conferences to share this with College management.

You’ll also meet with your Head of School on a termly basis to share feedback and discuss issues relating to your academic area.

All our Level 3 courses will allow progression onto university. Many of our students are so pleased with their time at Coulsdon Sixth Form College that they choose to stay on and continue to study with us at Croydon University Centre based at our Croydon College campus.

Throughout the year we run talks and workshops to help you complete your UCAS application, prepare your personal statement, and be interview ready if you need it. Our great partnership links with universities mean there are opportunities for you to meet with universities and get feedback on your personal statement before you apply.

GSCE Sociology helps students to gain knowledge and understanding of key social structures, processes, and issues through the study of families, education, crime and deviance, and social stratification. The course would give you a better understanding about how to investigate fact and making deductions, developing opinions and new ideas on social issues, and analyse and better understand the social world.

BTEC Applied Certificate This course will help you understand the types of crime from organised to corporate. The representation of crime in the media from news media to films, electronic gaming and social media. You will learn about social construction, how laws change from culture to culture and how they change over time. BTEC National Extended Diploma This qualification offers learners the opportunity to develop their musical, technical, and listening skills over their course of study through a process of selfevaluation, practice, and review, which are key skills for progression to higher education. GCSE This course is designed to provide engaging, challenging and meaningful learning experiences supporting the development of creative practice. The focus of the GCSE photography specification is to nurture an enthusiasm for art and design through a broad introductory foundation programme. It will enable students to gain a holistic understanding of a range of practices and contexts in the visual arts and design fields with a focus on digital photography and graphic design.

Our range of Courses include:

Computing is an established academic discipline that deals primarily with Coding, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and how computers work.

Level 3

Humanities & Law Humanities cover a collection of subjects which investigate the human experience. They are academic disciplines looking at areas of humans and their roles in society, culture and education.

History If you are interested in the past, are keen to know how the present is shaped and what the future might hold in store, then History is the subject for you. Your ideas, your opinions and your views will be asked for as we come to judge how and why events in history happened. Students will enjoy and do well in History if they have a genuine interest in the world and the history of how it has developed as well as analysing and problem solving based on collecting and assessing evidence.

Politics Do you enjoy a stimulating and dynamic subject which investigates topical issues and controversies that affect our everyday lives? Politics helps us understand how the British political system works, as well as developing an understanding of the core ideologies of liberalism, conservatism and socialism and another important ideology, multiculturalism. Students will develop a range of analytical, investigative and critical skills to use in whatever career path they choose. To do well in Politics, students will need to keep up-todate with current affairs by reading a respected newspaper and watching or listening to the news on a weekly basis.

Creative Digital Media & Film Media

Our range of Courses include:

The media department offers a lively and modern range of courses for students to learn using professional standard equipment. Students will broaden and deepen their understanding of the media industry and the role that it plays in society.

During the course, there will be an analysis of examples of a range of media texts, from music videos to video games. They will look at how media is constructed but also how audiences interact with the media. Much of the time will be spent working with others in both making and researching media products. The course provides a useful background for academic or vocational courses at university, apprenticeships or employment.

Level 3

Film Interested in films? Would you like to spend more time finding out about them? If so, Film Studies could be the A Level for you. This subject focuses on the study of film within aesthetic, institutional and social contexts. Students will be expected to analyse film texts of different genres, by a range of directors and representing a variety of cultures.

They will investigate and explore various critical frameworks and debates. They will explore how film generates meanings and responses as well as the ways in which spectators respond to film. They will also have the opportunity to make their own short film sequence in the first year and complete a short film in the second year, during which they will develop their evaluative skills in relation to film productions, drawing comparisons between their own product and professionally produced films.

Our range of Courses include:

The Travel and Tourism course provides a significant focus on customer service and how employees meet the needs of the diverse range of customers they will encounter. Content includes an introduction to the Industry where students will learn about all of the component industries within the sector, such as transport, accommodation and visitor attractions and the importance of Travel and Tourism to the UK economy. Students will also learn about marketing travel and tourism products and services. A favourite in the second year is the work experience unit along with travel and tourism enterprises, where students design their own travel and tourism business. Students will take part in a series of trips during the course and will have fun learning whilst practising their customer service skills in our brand-new aircraft cabin!

Hospitality This course has been designed to support students to acquire the necessary skills and qualifications in the Hospitality Industry.

Students will learn about the Hospitality Industry as a whole, learning about hotels, bars, restaurants and events management.

Customer Service, similarly to Travel and Tourism is incorporated into the course and students enjoy the role play assessments that take place in the first year of the course. The first year ends with a food and beverage service unit, where the students visit a hotel for afternoon tea, and watch the experts at work. They then prepare and serve afternoon tea to the staff, which provides a fun learning experience. The second year, involves studying how to market the hospitality industry and the products and services within it.

What is involved

5 GCSE’s grade 4 – 9 must include Maths and English Grade 4 – 9 and preferably Science.

You’ll spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on a 45-day placement with an employer to give you the skills and knowledge companies look for.

Take your future to the next level with this new 2 year qualification that is equivalent to 3 A Levels. Students will develop an understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to the sector, including:

Working within the Engineering and Manufacturing Sectors – an understanding of how materials, conditions and context influence design processes and products.

Essential mathematics for engineering and manufacturing – a knowledge and understanding of mathematics including standard matrices and determinants and standard trigonometry.

Materials and their properties – understanding material processing techniques and their effects on materials and material quality, the condition of materials, how these are managed, and materials testing methods and techniques.

T Levels

Visual Arts There are a wide range of Art related academic and vocational courses available at Coulsdon Sixth Form College and the art team is happy to help students choose the most appropriate programme.

The Visual Arts areas are well resourced and set up for a variety of media including print making and textiles, photography and graphic design. There are also dedicated resource areas equipped with Apple iMac Computers.

Photography Photography is largely a practical subject and is all about visual communication skills. Students will use a variety of black and white photographic techniques and experiment with digital media, as well as analysing and researching the work of other photographers, designers and artists.

Students are also lucky to have access to a dark room to produce their photos onsite here at College.

Our range of Courses include: Art & Design The course equips students with in-depth knowledge from a wide selection of areas within the creative fields of Fine Art, Design and Textiles.

The course structure can allow the qualification to be flexible to meet learners’ interests, abilities and aspirations.

Textiles The course encourages experimental approaches to Art & Design with an emphasis on Fashion.

Students will explore different aspects of fashion and textiles including focussing on specialist areas such as fashion or costume design, fashion accessories or surface pattern design.

Fine Art This is a practical Fine Art course. It gives students the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the visual world and to respond to it in a personal and creative way. Emphasis is placed on developing visual language skills through drawing, painting and printmaking and much of the work is based directly on observation.

Graphics Graphics is a highly practical subject where students combine traditional graphic techniques with digital technology to produce their own work. The main areas of the course cover Advertising, Branding, Illustration, Packaging and Typography. Students are encouraged to see their practice in the context of contemporary visual culture.

Coulsdon Sixth Form College offers a wide range of courses designed to develop students’ interests and skills, allowing for a smooth progression into employment or onto higher education.

Level 3 Programme of Study This is a two-year programme where students study the equivalent of three A Level subjects or BTEC National courses and, if necessary, re-take Maths or English if they have not yet achieved Grade 4 at GCSE.

What is the ‘mix and match’ offer?

Unlike many school sixth forms, students at Coulsdon Sixth Form College have the option to ‘mix and match’ A Levels with BTEC Level 3 courses, or opt to study all A Levels or all BTECs. The ‘mix and match’ combinations are endless.

This ensures your timetable is tailor-made for you, giving you the best possible chance of doing well. If you don’t pass English Language or Maths GCSE at Grade 4 or above, you will also have these subjects on your timetable.

What are the entry qualification requirements for Level 3 courses?

Students wishing to study Level 3 programmes need to achieve at least four GCSE passes at Grade 4 or above. Students wishing to include A Levels in their programmes need to achieve at least five GCSE passes at Grade 4 or above, with at least two at Grade 5 or above. In addition to these general entry requirements, some courses, particularly A Level subjects have specific entry requirements. Please visit our website for course specific information.

How many units are students expected to take?

The majority of students are encouraged to create a programme which incorporates three ‘units’ in their first year where one unit is the equivalent to one A Level. See the table which shows the various sizes of BTEC qualifications and their equivalence to A Level sizes.

How do I decide between A Levels and BTECs? A Levels:

BTECs:

If students enjoy an intellectual challenge and are good at understanding concepts and applying them, they will probably be suited to A Level study.

BTEC Level 3 courses are practical, workrelated courses that are assessed mainly through coursework although most of those offered at Coulsdon now have some external assessments. BTECs are recognised by universities and employers alike as suitable entry qualifications for university courses, apprenticeships and graduate training programmes.

Most A Levels are not directly job related and, because of this, it is possible for students to keep their options open about career and higher education choices.

Level 2 Programme of Study This one-year programme is designed for students who do not qualify for the Level 3 Programme but who have a minimum of two GCSEs Grade 3 plus three GCSEs at Grade 2, these must include English Language and Mathematics. Students who successfully complete the Level 2 Programme can stay on at College to do BTEC Level 3 courses (for a further two years) before progressing onto higher education, employment or an Apprenticeship.

BTEC Level 2 Awards These are practical, work-related courses that introduce learners to their chosen

employment area and provide a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification, or directly into employment.

The BTEC Level 2 Award is equivalent to one GCSE (Grade 9 - 4) and is assessed via a combination of coursework and external assessment.

GCSEs The College offers GCSEs in English Language, Mathematics and Double Science.

T Levels are new courses which follow GCSEs and are equivalent to 3 A Levels.

These 2-year courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses, so that the content meets the needs of industry, preparing students for work, further training or study.

Designed by employers, T Levels offer students a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience during an industry placement of at least 315 hours (approximately 45 days). Get a head start in your career whilst learning and developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to work within industry or progress to higher level study. From September 2022, we will be offering a T Level in Science at Coulsdon Sixth Form College and from September 2022 further subjects will be added. See the course information on page 31 for more details.

Who are they aimed at?

Students can study T Levels after GCSEs and is equivalent to studying three A Levels. They are aimed at advanced students (at least 5 GCSEs at grade 4 including English Language and Maths) who are aged 16-18 and recognise their strong interest for a technical industry.

I studied Business and Spanish as part of my GCSEs, and it was always my intention to carry on studying them. I find it fascinating learning about the way businesses work, and the economic environment in which they operate.

Croydon’s Pathway to Independence Learning for Life Programme Croydon Pathway is a specialist provision based at The Pathway Centre at Croydon College’s Coulsdon Campus, with a social community element included as part of the programme.

The Pathway Centre is for young adults with complex and severe difficulties. This may include young people who have significant learning difficulties, autism, health and medical needs, physical difficulties including visual and hearing impairments, and associated behaviours resulting from these needs. Every student is recognised and respected as unique and special, and we place each young person’s individual needs and goals at the centre.

It is this approach that underpins our curriculum; developed to ensure students are given opportunities to develop their communication, learning and independence, in a safe and inclusive environment. At the Pathway Centre the focus is on developing vocational skills, including numeracy and literacy, and arts and music. Where suitable, the course offers opportunities for mainstream integration with a focus on social interaction and development of life skills. There is also provision for taking part in supported activities in the local community, such as swimming, the gym, a community allotment and supported work placements.

The Refectory

Coulsdon Sixth Form College has exceptional facilities. Housed in a stunning three-storey building, the College provides students with outstanding learning facilities across all subject areas.

Industry-standard software & programmes

Light, contemporary, classrooms are complemented by superb learning resource centres, enabling students to work independently in their area between lessons. Specialist classrooms for areas including Science, Visual Arts and Music and Media, all have the latest equipment and resources, keeping students up-to-date with professional standards.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) on the ground floor has a suite of over 100 computers and a variety of different resources, including magazines and periodicals. There are also quiet areas for learning and reading.

The Refectory, on the ground floor, has glass doors leading to the courtyard – a perfect outside space to eat and mix with friends throughout the year.

Outdoor Sporting Facilities

The Sport and Performance Centre (SPC) is home to Sport, Public Services and Performing Arts. Here you’ll find the College’s theatre, sports hall and gym. Outside there are netball and tennis courts, an all-weather pitch, extensive playing fields and landscaped gardens.

The College has more than 1,000 computers, equipped with industrystandard software and specialist educational programmes. Macs are available for all Art, Music and Media students who are required to use specialist packages for their courses, which in turn prepares them for the world of work.

will prejudicially affect you, you may cancel the contract and withdraw (even if the cancellation period has expired). We will use all reasonable endeavours to deliver all courses described in the prospectus.

However, if there are not sufficient applicants either to make a course viable or to deliver a quality student experience, we may cancel the course. If you have received an offer for any course described in the prospectus, but we discontinue the course prior to you registering at the College, we will notify you as soon as possible and we will use reasonable endeavours to provide a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified. If you are unhappy with the replacement course provided or if we are unable to provide a suitable replacement course, you may cancel the contract and withdraw your application.

About the Croydon College Group The Croydon College Group comprises three campuses.

Coulsdon Sixth Form College concentrates on the delivery of academic pathways for 16–18-year-olds from a purpose built modern university style campus based in the south of the borough.

Croydon College delivers education and training from entry level to level 6 – (degree level) for those aged over 16 years old in a wide range of vocational subjects, general subjects and academic pathways. www.croydon.ac.uk The Croydon University Centre, situated in the Croydon College building offers Degree level courses, validated by the University of Roehampton alongside HNC Diplomas. www.croydonuniversitycentre.ac.uk
