New program offers youth opportunities Youth volunteer program provides opportunities for teens to make a difference Herald Contributor

The Youth Volunteer Program is a new program to the Crowsnest Pass in 2022. The program offers initiatives that support teens, seniors, nonprofits, charitable organizations and the community as a whole by matching youth to volunteer opportunities in the community. Our goal is to build and strengthen the community while providing youth the opportunity

to build their professional and personal network, communication skills and leadership skills while experiencing something new. The new initiative is currently funded by Family and Community Support Services and the program will enhance the social well-being of youth, seniors and families in our community while building confidence and promoting volunteerism.

These opportunities will enable youth to create a better sense of belonging in our community and to provide a greater life satisfaction, increased self-esteem and responsibility, improved psychological and emotional health and promotes a healthy lifestyle while fostering the development of empathy and good choices.

We have created a website and app for

youth to keep up to date with volunteer opportunities in our community.

After a profile is made, the app can be downloaded by scanning the QR code below the article.

We currently have opportunities posted from Bellecrest Days, the Community Garden, Crowsnest Pass Food Bank, York Creek Lodge

In the lIne of fIre Between May 9 and May 16, Crowsnest Pass RCMP responded to a total of 36 calls for service including the following reported incidents.

One (1) break and enter, three (3) threats/harassment, one (1) mischief/vandalism, four (4) thefts, one (1) disturbing the peace, one (1) other criminal code, three (3) other provincial statutes, five (5) driving complaints, five (5) motor vehicle collisions, four (4) assistance to the general public, six (6) assistance to other agencies, one (1) false alarm and one (1) lost and found.

Property Damage On May 2nd, 2022, there was a complaint of damage to a windbreak for an outbuilding at Burmis Lake pond. The damage occurred sometime during the past week.

Erratic Driving On May 9th, 2022, there was a complaint of erratic driving. A vehicle was passing other vehicles on the wrong side of highway 3. The vehicle was registered to a company in Calgary that was contacted and warned of the driving complaint.

Erratic Driving On May 11th, 2022, there was a complaint of a grey Toyota vehicle passing unsafely on highway 3 near Lundbreck. The licence plate did not match the vehicle.

Shoplifter On May 12th, 2022, there was a complaint of an unidentified male shoplifting sandwiches from a convenience store in Blairmore. It is under investigation.

Littering On May 14th, 2022, there was a complaint of a vehicle driver throwing cigarette butts out of a moving vehicle on highway 3 at the Hillcrest access. The licence plate obtained did not match vehicle.

Hit and Run On May 14th, 2022, there was a complaint of a hit and run to a parked vehicle. Damage was done to a 2019 GMC Sierra. The exact location of the hit and run is unknown.

Littering On May 14th, 2022, there was a complaint of a person throwing cigarette butts from a vehicle on

highway 3 near Bellevue. The suspect vehicle is a yellow Kia with BC plates.

Theft On May 15th, 2022, there was a complaint of theft of electricity from a residence. It appears a neighbour was running an extension cord from one residence to another residence.

Arrest A 30-year-old female was arrested and charged with 4 counts of break and enter of properties, theft of motor vehicle, theft and misuse of credit card and trespassing, two counts of fail to comply with release conditions. The offences occurred between April 26th-28th. A JIR hearing held and she was released on documents for Pincher Creek Court.

Scary.

When I came to Alberta, it was an agricultural province. Calgary had stockyards with a lot of cattle, Robin Hood Mills’ huge granaries dominated the skyline and people with country-western clothes were seen everywhere. The Stampede grounds, much smaller than now, were the prime tourist attraction. Driving around the countryside, I saw lots of farms and some coal mining towns, but they were on a decline. The price of coal didn’t justify the huge investment.

My friend Jack O’Gorman was a boilermaker, and he told me stories about the big steam locomotives he used to work on but, he said, all things come to an end and diesel is by far better. The coal mining towns were dwindling, horses were kept as pets or raised for meat and oil took over the local economy. Calgary buildings reached for the sky with no plan for what will happen after oil.

The new oil-based economy took off and the big event was the Energy Policy dictating that Canadian oil was a temporary boon for Canada. Sharing was not a very popular sentiment. Coal was no longer a major contributor to the economy and places existing on coal alone closed down. Technology advances always leave some people behind.

Some people who grew up in the days when tough men went underground remember the days with nostalgia. We all miss our childhood days, but we grow up and the world is forever changing. Not long ago most people made a living in manufacturing and now the jobs went to China and later many became automated.

In the last few years, China developed new industries, demand for steel grew, and with it the need for good quality coal. Australia sold coal, but extra measures to reduce the harmful environmental effects of coal forced its mining corporations to look for offshore supplies. Alberta mining towns woke up from a long slumber envisioning a renewal of their glory days, but other aspects have changed. The short-time gains will not justify large investments. The government investigation clarified that more than a little local development is not worth the effort.

Prosperity for the coal mining towns that flourished in the past will have to come from something else. Energy is a superb source of income, yet reality shows that it will have to be a modern form of energy. Although my father spent some years underground, I don’t think that local coal mining will bring my youth back.

Even if there is a mine nearby, it will not change my life much.

We are getting new people in the area, and taxes are increasing before they settle down. A mine that is not on municipal lands will not directly pay taxes here. I am satisfied with the way things are. One coal mine nearby gives us the right to be called a coal mining town and another building a sustainable energy project and green hydrogen for sale is just great.

I am interested in having peace here and in the world. Sorry, all you fighters, I vote for cool heads and peace. Next, I am worried about how fast anti-democratic forces are taking over the world. The latest is the Philippines. Ukraine is fighting to keep democracy and next to us the coming election may bring a more dictatorial regime. Already they are fighting about abortions while a large majority is against reopening the debate. What we need all over the world is strong independent journalism to expose the truth or facts and let people make up their minds.

After this, I am concerned about having air, water, food, health care, education, transportation, religious freedom, care for the elderly, and ways for all people to make a living. I want us to do all that without stealing all the resources from future generations. I completely don’t have any interest in adding to someone’s accumulated wealth. If they use it for common good, I am willing to help.

In my opinion, all the world’s resources, regardless of who claims to own them at the time, should benefit all the world’s people. The resources that keep us fed, warm, mobile, healthy, educated, and more belong to all. Not to her majesty, the natives, the colonizers, churches, or others, but humans and other life forms. The material world is a circle of life and changes must be balanced properly.

Now we have pushed the world to the limits and we know it, but many refuse to see it. Force will not repair it since it cannot.

Human thoughts are formed with words and move on their own to bring equilibrium. Haste brings waste, and we have wasted all that can safely be wasted.

So, if life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.

The war in Europe will cause a new wave of development of cleaner energy and restrict energy waste. We won’t be able to do it using only carbon taxes. The premature move from COVID restrictions will bring more health care issues. War in Ukraine will cause starvation in places. A scary situation.

What should happen now is for mankind to realize important realities. The population will decrease if we educate girls. Even when it does, we will not need to grow each economy against others to stay alive. There will be less need for constant human labor and with proper cooperation, there will be enough to feed all of us well into the future. Our biggest enemy is the temptation to have much more than others and what we need. Remove the glorifying of the superrich and superstars and people should and will be happy.

A wise person once said, “if we don’t hang together, we will surely hang alone.” All we need is to buy into it and vote for it if we retain democracy.

Forget fighting and work for equality and human rights. Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil. Amen.

Crowsnest Pass Competitive Gymnastics a success DaviD SelleS Pass Herald Reporter

The Crowsnest Pass Competitive Gymnastics team is wrapping up a successful season.

The team took part in five competitions across Alberta this season and will be finishing their season with a competition in Kelowna the first weekend of June.

“Our first competition was the Battle of the Bridge in Lethbridge, our second was Ed Vincent Invitational in Calgary.

After that we went to Xcel Championships where we ended up coming home with a gold medal for one of our competitors. Then we did Mountain Magic Invitational and then we just got back from the Canmore Summit Invitational. Our last one of the year will be in Kelowna,” said Coach Brittany Vaughan.

The competitive team is made up of girls at a variety of levels.

“It’s women’s artistic gymnastics. All of the girls are in the women’s xcel program. It’s more of a mellow ease in to com-

petitive gymnastics. Two of our girls are in the Canadian competitive program. They are moving into level three soon, which is a lot more difficult and a larger commitment as well,” said Vaughan.

The team ranges from age 8 to 14 currently.

Vaughan says that while the competitions are typically run from January to June, the competitive gymnastics program is still running during the summer months.

“They can take the summer off but we run camps all summer long that they can attend if they want to. I have a couple girls who basically live here so there will be some who keep going throughout the summer.”

Vaughan says she is incredibly pleased with the performance of the team this year.

“I’m so proud of how well our athletes did. We came home from Mountain Magic Invitational with six gold medals, six silver medals, four bronze medals and 35 top 8

placements. My girls did so well and I’m so unbelievably proud of them.”

Overall, Vaughan

says the team surpassed all her expectations this year.

“This was our first

year running a competitive program. I didn’t really have any expectations this year and

these girls have just continued to amaze me and surpass every expectation I had for them.”

Editorial Well we did it. We conquered Disney World. It was six day, over 100,000 steps, four flights, three theme parks and two days at Universal Studios.

I can’t put into words how much I enjoyed this time with my boys. My boys are seriously the neatest people I know. They are funny and can make friends anywhere. Many times throughout the parks I would see them talking to strangers, meeting young people and exchanging Snapchat addresses. Keiran even made a plan to head to Florida in December to go fishing with a new found friend. I’m often in awe by how they can make friends and show such kindness. I don’t know how many times they stopped for families and asked if they wanted a group photo. I found out after that for every photo Keiran took he’d flip their screen and also take a photo of himself. Imagine how they would laugh after seeing his selfie on their phones.

I know my boys are smart and brains do get you far in life, but the thing I’m more proud of is how well they are socially. If you can’t talk to people you can’t function well in life, I don’t care how smart you are.

The trip was an astounding success. Quinn at one point said, “wow this is the first trip we have gone on and nothing crazy has happened”. Cue the tropical storm that hit us out of the blue. I have never in my life seen the sky go completely black, in a matter of minutes, the wind create whitecaps on the lake by our hotel and lightening crashed like it was crashing under your feet. We made it to a gazebo and could see our hotel room about 500 metres away so we said “we are Canadians let make a run for it.” By the time we got to the room we were a dripping mess. We laughed and laughed about the experience and Quinn’s comment.

The last day of our trip I was a bit weepy. I thought to myself how many more times am I going to be able to take a vacation with all of my boys. How many moments are left in my life where we are all together? I have enjoyed every second of my life being a mom. I have raise magnificent boys who are indeed magnificent men. The trip was off the cuff because I just needed some time to be around the people I love most in this world. As I said in last week’s editorial we only had three days to plan it. Aiden’s boss gave him a week’s grace to start his co-op, so thank you Craig.

Keiran had to email everyone he had planned to dethatch to say his mom needed him, and most people were kind. So thank you for being patient with him, so he could be with me. Quinn’s teachers were very understanding that I was taking him out of school for a week. My staff went above and beyond, even labeling and delivering the papers.

I am truly the luckiest person around to be so loved and protected. I have often said you see the best in people in sickness, death and inheritance and boy I have seen a lot of good people in my life and in this community.

I made a memory last week, one that I will have for the rest of my life. I have not laughed so much in a long time. I have not felt such love in a long time and it’s because these boys I was gifted to raise came to the plate and made my memory possible.

On the last day I got a cupcake with Mickey Mouse on it and I took a photo and said, “it’s been a slice Disney.” Trust me, buy the car, take the trip and eat the cake. It’s a short ride everyone so hug a little harder and tell those you love them how much they mean to you!

Remember life if not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Simply Selles Musings from your local reporter The first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs was completed over the past weekend with five Game 7’s taking place.

In my time as a big hockey fan, I limited the amount of times I do predictions on which teams will win.

When I was in junior and senior high, I made a yearly bet with a friend on who would win the Cup. The bet was if the team you picked won the Cup, the other had to shave their legs.

The day before the Stanley Cup Final began, we would flip a coin to see who would pick a team and force the other person to be left with the other team.

Each year I won the coin toss, I ended up losing the bet.

I would also make a full bracket for the playoffs in junior and never had any success with those either.

With the bracket, you pick a winner from every series all the way to the Cup Final and hope the teams you pick win.

I never went better than 50 per cent on my predictions in those brackets which meant I was usually out of the running for winning by the end of the first round.

In high school, I continued making brackets but was only going up against my Social Studies teacher, who never really paid attention to the NHL and would just pick random teams.

We would always bet a Tim Hortons gift card on our brackets and year after year, I would be congratulating her on beating me again and again.

Once I graduated, I stopped doing predictions because clearly I wasn’t any good at them.

Then again this year, I was messaged by a different teacher asking for my bracket to go up against my old Social Studies teacher again.

Reluctantly, I sent one off.

To my and everyone else’s shock, I went a perfect 8/8 in the first round this year.

I still have a perfect bracket in tact.

Now I just need to hope the teams I picked in round two win again to keep my unlikely perfect bracket alive.

This year the stars also aligned for one of the most looked forward to series in the last 30 years.

For the first time since 1991, the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers will face off in the Battle of Alberta to see who will make the Western Conference Final.

I have friends and family on both sides of the battle and as a neutral fan of this series, I can’t wait to see the stress levels going up and down throughout the series.

To any Flames or Oilers fans reading this, I wish you all luck as we all know that whoever loses this series won’t hear the end of it until at least the start of next season if not longer.

May the best team win and may the series go seven games to maximize our entertainment and your stress levels!

~ OBITUARIES ~ PATRICIA BAIN (WESTCOTT) 1951 ~ 2022 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Patricia Iris Lydia Bain (Westcott) of Crowsnest Pass, Alberta who died on May 5, 2022 while receiving care at the Crowsnest Pass Hospital. She was blessed with 71 years of a wonderful life.

Patty was born on March 17, 1951 to loving parents, Jim Bain and Mary Rolande-Bain. She was always special and was gifted with immeasurable kindness and compassion. Patty was fond of playing bingo, dice, cards and watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune and the Young & Restless. She also loved her time working at Bagatelle. Her beauty and girlish smile remained with her always and will now live forever in our hearts and minds.

She is survived by her devoted sister, Yvonne (Vern) Jarvie of Hillcrest Mines, AB; her nephew, Jason Jarvie; as well as extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, James Cameron Bain and Mary Rolande-Westcott; and her step-father, John Westcott.

An informal gathering of family and friends will be held at Mountain View Industries on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 1pm.
