The

Story

Staring through the large door at Silberhaus Manor, Clara and her brother, Fritz, long for the party to begin. Soon their parents allow them inside the living room that proudly boasts the glittering cloak of Christmas. Only moments later, the guests begin to arrive, and the merriment begins. Clara's Godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, a magician, entertains the guests with two life-sized dolls. His nephew joins him as his assistant. Herr Drosselmeyer gives Clara a nutcracker. The strange little nutcracker also captures Fritz's attention. When Fritz attempts to wrench the doll from his sister's hands, he breaks it. Sadly, Clara lays the broken nutcracker under the Christmas tree before she is sent upstairs to bed.

Unable to sleep, Clara sneaks back downstairs to find her nutcracker. With only a flicker of light from her candle, the strangeness of night overcomes her as the clock strikes twelve. She falls into a deep haunting sleep with the nutcracker wrapped in her arms.

As she sleeps, an army of huge mice led by the Mouse King invades the room. They quickly set about removing all of the furniture as if to make room for the Christmas tree, which has begun to grow. Suddenly the packages spring open and out march the toy soldiers, now grown to human dimensions. The nutcracker is transformed into a life-sized figure by Herr Drosselmeyer. The Mouse King deals heartlessly with the poor nutcracker, and is about to finish him off when Clara rises to his defense and kills the Mouse King. Herr Drosselmeyer transforms the nutcracker into a prince, who happens to resemble Herr Drosselmeyer’s nephew.

Herr Drosselmeyer then takes Clara and the Prince to the Snow Kingdom, where they are graciously received by the Snow King and Queen. The entire kingdom of snowflakes performs a dance for their entertainment. Afterwards, the Snow King and Queen grant them their blessings, and send them on their way toward the Land of Sweets.

Herr Drosselmeyer then takes # 2459 Clara and the Prince to the Russian sugar-coated Land of Sweets. They are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Endowed with a festive spirit, the Sugar Plum Fairy calls all her subjects together to honor her guests. Clara and the Prince take the seat of honor upon the royal throne, and are entertained by the sweets of various countries, including Spain, Arabia, China, and Russia. The mirlitons and the candy bon bons dance for them. The music's spirit prods the sleepy flowers into a proud waltz before the throne. The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier pay final tribute to the young couple as they dance the Grand Pas de Deux. Herr Drosselmeyer interrupts the celebration and reminds Clara that she is asleep. Fritz wakes up Clara from her dream and she proudly admires her nutcracker.

Arabian and Judge Silberhaus Danny Whitehead began his dance career in Minnesota at the age of eighteen, training with the Minnesota Ballet and then dancing as a member of the company for five seasons. Danny then moved to Southern California, where he danced for nine seasons as a guest artist with Pacific Festival Ballet in Thousand Oaks. After that, Danny trained as a ballroom dance instructor at Fox Dance Studio in Redlands, where he currently teaches. Danny is having a lot of fun returning to Inland Dance Theatre in The Nutcracker with this fabulous cast of dancers! Inland Dance Theatre is pleased to present Danny the roles of Arabian and Judge Silberhaus.

Arabian and Nutcracker Anthony Reynoso has been dancing for over eight years, ever since high school. He started taking dance seriously at the age of eighteen when he first joined Riverside City College and other various dance studios and companies. He has continuously studied ballet, but he has also found his passion for other forms of dance including contemporary, modern, and Mexican Ballet Folklorico. Anthony is excited to be working alongside such amazing, talented, passionate dancers and choreographers in this production of Nutcracker. Inland Dance Theatre is pleased to present Anthony in the roles of Arabian and Nutcracker.

Mouse King Anthony Jackson returns to Inland Dance Theatre to perform in the 47th annual holiday ballet, The Nutcracker. AJ danced his first production with Inland Dance Theatre in 2004 as the Dew Drop Cavalier, partnered with Kathleen Curtis. AJ is currently the Artistic Director of Inland Dance Academy. He is also an instructor at Bre Dance Studio in Riverside, California, where he commenced his formal dance training in 1989 under the guidance of Clifford Breland. He has performed in union and non-union productions in opera, musical theater, ballet theater, dance theater, music videos, and television. He has performed across the country for over three decades. AJ has taught at universities and conservatories across the country. AJ says, “it is my complete honor to once again perform with Inland Dance Theatre.” Inland Dance Theatre is pleased to present Anthony the role of Mouse King.

Artistic Director/Choreographer Kathleen Curtis was born in San Bernardino, California. She began classical ballet training at Noerr Dance Academy, now known as Inland Dance Academy, with Diane Amendt and Evette DeMarco Swinson. At age nine, she made her first appearance in Inland Dance Theatre’s Nutcracker as a soldier. She went on to perform more prominent roles including the Sugar Plum Fairy, Snow Queen, Dew Drop Fairy, Nutcracker, and Mouse King. She has made twenty-six appearances in Nutcracker. Kathleen began working as the Rehearsal Assistant for Nutcracker in 1997. She joined Inland Dance Theatre’s Board of Directors in 2015 and was elected President of the Board in 2018. Under the direction of Evette DeMarco Swinson, Kathleen has performed principal roles in Alice in Wonderland, Pas de Quatre, Paquita, and The Sleeping Beauty. In 2000, she began teaching ballet at Inland Dance Academy where she choreographed for many of their Young Artist Showcases. Her students have attended summer intensive programs at professional ballet schools across the United States.

Director/Choreographer Cecilia Hering, Artistic Director of Redlands Festival Ballet and the School of International Ballet, began training in Los Angeles. She toured with the Ouhtomsky Ballet Classique and has performed with San Francisco Opera Ballet. Her international career includes soloist and principal roles with Les Grandes Ballet Canadiens, States Ballet of Munich, Gelsenkirchen, Muenster of West Germany, and Ballet of Saint Gallen in Switzerland, where she was ballet mistress and choreographer. Ms. Hering founded Redlands Festival Ballet in 1982 and has received high acclaim for her choreography in the extensive repertoire of the company. She continues her dedication to the preservation and presentation of classical dance in the Inland Empire.

In 1978, the Inland Ballet Theatre was formed from young dancers throughout the community and was supported by Inland Dance Theatre, Inc. In the past forty years, the ballet company has performed Nutcracker, Peter Rabbit, City Dancin, and Coppelia. The company has also lent its talents to community projects such as the San Bernardino Symphony, San Bernardino Unified School District and Assistance League of San Bernardino. Many of the company and apprentice dancers have been accepted to major dance schools for their Summer Programs including The School of American Ballet, Boston Ballet School, Burklyn Ballet School, Houston Ballet School, Joffrey Ballet School, Pacific Northwest Ballet School, The Rock School, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School, San Francisco Ballet School, and Kirov Ballet School. In addition, former company members have studied year round at Harid Conservatory, University of Utah School of Dance, Kirov Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School, and the San Francisco Ballet School.

The History of Inland Dance Theatre, Inc. The first "Nutcracker" ballet was brought to San Bernardino by Judy Noerr in 1976. It was the combined efforts of the San Bernardino Valley Community Concert Association, the City Unified School District, and hundreds of volunteers who gave of their time and talents to make her dream of a ballet in San Bernardino come true. The first production was performed to taped music, but the following year the San Bernardino Symphony Association Board and their conductor, seeing the quality of the performance, chose to be a part of the production. That year the production was presented directly under the auspices of Community Arts Productions, a community-based nonprofit corporation dedicated to the support and promotion of quality performing arts productions. Each year something has been added to the "Nutcracker" to make it the production you will see today. In 1987, to appropriately reflect the diverse communities our performers represented, Community Arts Productions and the Dance Company changed their names. Community Arts Productions became the Inland Dance Theatre, Inc. (IDT), and the Dance Company is now known as the Inland Ballet Theatre Company (IBT).
