Welcome

Get Ready To Be Wowed

Palm Springs is in the Colorado Desert’s Coachella Valley. It has long been the preferred desert retreat of Hollywood royalty, presidents, wellness seekers, golfers, and sun-worshippers. It is a vacationer’s paradise and makes the perfect getaway offering stunning views, fine dining, historical and cultural attractions, unique mid-century architecture, and luxuriant resorts or hip hotels. Enjoy indulgent spas, shopping sprees, relaxed bike rides, and a village made for strolling. Come as you are and be who you are. You will feel the stress melt away with our relaxed vibe.

Climate and Geography

Palm Springs has more than 350 days of sunshine with less than 5 inches of rain. Winter temperatures average in the 70’s with nights in the mid- 40’s.

The geography of Palm Springs is what creates the famed warm, dry climate. The beautiful surrounding mountains that shelter us are the Little San Bernardino Mountains to the north, the Santa Rosa Mountains on the south, and the San Jacinto Mountains to the west.

Best Time to Visit

The best times of year to visit Palm Springs for outdoor activities are from May to June and from September to November. We call this our shoulder seasons because it’s great weather with less crowds. Resort rates, especially Sunday – Thursday, are also a better value.

This is the land of swimming pools in every shape and size. The day begins and ends in the pool with breaks to relax at one of our many restaurants with outdoor patios, or meet friends for a martini as the sun sets behind the San Jacinto Mountains. This playground is here for you to enjoy.

The high season is January through April. For those looking for more of a pool scene and hot weather activities, rainless days with temperatures averaging 100°F is from early June to early September. If you have just been through a cold winter, visitors will tell you it feels good. Tip: Often resorts run deals during this off-peak season.

Stay

Discover our Boutique Hotels

Boutique hotels are plentiful in Palm Springs. Hip, cool gems tucked in next to bougainvillea-draped beauties. Modern rustic lodges find their way to romantic retreats. Sophisticated glamour melts into mellow adobe haciendas.

Most are independently owned and operated. No big brands here. All are less than 50 rooms…some a mere handful. Enjoy catered breakfasts, evening happy hours, complimentary bikes, and lots of sunshine.

Mad for Mid-Century

Palm Springs is known internationally for the desert’s vast collection of mid-century modern architecture. Why not experience this amazing desert modern style during your stay?

Orbit Inn is a retro resort with lots of mid-mod style. Its sister property is The Hideaway located in the historic tennis neighborhood. Del Marcos Hotel was architect Bill Cody’s first Palm Springs commission, setting the tone for post-war modern motels.

Movie Colony Hotel was designed by Albert Frey. The exteriors still show his style, but interiors are more 21st century modern. The Desert Star looks like a classic 1950s motel, but each onebedroom unit is individually owned.

visitpalmsprings.com 12

Luxury

Very few places in the world do luxury like Palm Springs –after all, it has long been the Southern California playground for Hollywood’s rich and famous.

Pamper yourself at L’Horizon, a leading hotel of the world nestled away and private. Or stay at your own guest house at The Parker and stroll their large gardened grounds. La Serena Villas right downtown will check all the boxes and is within walking distance of everything.

Spanish-Mediterranean Magic

The early celebrities loved this architecture and Palm Springs’ movie mogul-turned-hoteliers happily obliged. Serenity reigns at the ultimate boutique resort at Casa Cody, the oldest operating hotel, founded in the 1920s by Buffalo Bill Cody’s cousin.

You’ll find turn-of-the-century Spain at the 1921 Spanish Revival-style Andalusian Court, with eight villas nestled among lush vegetation and a beautifully landscaped courtyard pool. For Spanish modern, The Alcazar Palm Springs pairs historic red-tile charm with 34 modern white-on-white guestrooms.

The charm of 1935 architecture lives at the Andreas Hotel & Spa, with 25 ultra-large Spanish style rooms.

Gay Resorts

There is a collection of Gay Resorts in the Warm Sands neighborhood. El Mirasol has been welcoming wonderfully gay clientele as early as 1975. Get pampered at The Hacienda in one of their signature pool suites. Just around the block is Desert Paradise that’s recently gone through a renovation. Across the street is the popular INNdulge, which offers a friendly social hour for guests. And the popular Santiago resort in South Palm Springs is nestled in a quiet neighborhood.

Convention & Full-Service

Go big at one of the full-service resorts downtown such as Kimpton The Rowan, Hilton, Hyatt, or Hotel Zoso. Or relax Uptown at Margaritaville. On the South end, the Ace Hotel and the Saguaro have unique spaces. Go really big at the Renaissance, the city’s largest resort with the largest pool.

Eat & Drink

Outdoor Dining on Palm Canyon

Palm Canyon is our thriving thoroughfare, complete with outdoor dining options and inviting cafes. Enjoy how Trio has re-imagined their outdoor patio and menu. And for one of the largest patios in Palm Springs, visit Eight4Nine in the Uptown Design District. As day rolls into evening, roll farther down Palm Canyon for a cocktail. Lulu California Bistro has expanded their patio and continues to offer fresh menu options.

On North Palm Canyon is Boozehounds. Dogs are encouraged at this massive restaurant with an expansive outdoor patio. And while your on North Palm Canyon, lovers of sushi and whiskey will love Sandfish by Engin Onural.

The roaring 20’s are back, and they are located firmly at Bar Cecil. The central philosophy of this throwback gin joint is simple; yes, and plenty of it. Rocking back to the future, things are heating up at 1501 Uptown Gastropub. The new kid in Uptown blends rustic aesthetics with refined vittles, vino and vitality.

Explore Indian Canyon & Arenas

Just a few blocks away is Tommy Bahama with a large outdoor dining space and comfortable misters. For dinner try Clandestino, tucked in a few doors down, offering delicious Mexican fare that’s light, flavorful and from the same owners as Tac/Quila.

Stroll on over to our other main drag, Indian Canyon, to experience the legendary Bill’s Pizza. White wine is also the perfect deck mate at Fisherman’s Market & Grill. For a hearty breakfast, start your day at Bit of Country just down the street.

Arenas Road comes to life at night with many bars, lounges, and live entertainment. Don’t miss Blackbook with a great menu and vibe.

To rise above the ordinary, consider a visit to one of Palm Springs’ second-story patios. Elevate your palate and quench your thirst with a swelling tide of beverage options at Bongo Johnny’s.

Due south, you will encounter Mercado Plaza, a welcoming enclave that flourishes with open-air possibilities. Upstairs, Wilma & Frida’s boasts an amazing menu.

Something Sweet

Formerly a delicacy popularized at Disneyland, Dole Whip is a pillowy delight served up at Lappert’s Ice Cream. No trip to Palm Springs is complete without a taste of the wild cherry chocolate body frosting at Palm Springs Fudge & Chocolates. Great Shakes will satisfy any sweet tooth. Locally made Brandini Toffee makes a great gift.

Downtown & La Plaza

A stroll through downtown Palm Springs is a must. Spend the day looking for unique treasures or get the perfect resort outfit at one of the designer boutiques. And while your window shopping, be sure to visit the Marilyn Monroe statue and new public downtown park near the Palm Springs Art Museum.

Uptown Design District

North Palm Canyon is a-buzz with unique and trendy finds. Start with fashion designer Trina Turk’s flagship boutique filled with the newest collection of her bright, bold California-chic clothing and swimwear. A few doors down is Iconic Atomic, your one-stop-shop for vintage everything.

The Frippery specializes in retro wear – think Jackie O-style sheaths and Dinah Shore-like full skirts. Nearby Gallery 24 Jewelry is a must for accessorizing with Parisian haute couture vintage. For some fun gifts stop by Destination PSP for all things Palm Springs..

Johnny Was has Coachella-worthy women’s resort wear and Free People features rocker Ts, faux fur and super cool midi dresses. Neighboring West Elm is a must for mid-century style contemporary home décor.

Across the street is Benjamin Perdereau boutique featuring resort wear exclusively from the French Riviera. Nearby, British Invasion specializes in menswear, accessories and footwear from the UK. If your into records, Vinyl Records and Collectables has a super selection of vintage spins.

The Shag Store is nearby, where you’ll find artist Josh Agle’s clever and oh-so-popular take on mid-century life in paintings, prints and lithographs. Across the street are a number of art galleries including Peri G Fine Art, Savage Gallery, and the Rubine Red Gallery.

All Things Vintage

Marilyn flirted here. Sinatra charmed our socks off. Judy Garland found us over the rainbow.

Palm Springs is a time capsule of style, sophistication, and vintage iconography. To live like the legends, you need to shop like them, and our hometown delivers rare and wondrous finds to immerse you in that midcentury mindset. From furniture to clothing, estate jewelry, and more — if you’re looking for a paradise of a pedigree, you’ll find it on this trip back in timelessness...

To the north is Haus of Re[x] offering the largest mid-century furniture and design store in Palm Springs.

Take A Stroll

Stroll up Palm Canyon to long-time favorites Oooh La La for stylish resort wear, and adjacent Baby La La for irresistible kids wear. They even have a Puppy La La for cuter-than-cute doggie fashions.

Stewart Galleries is across the street in The Plaza District with an eclectic art collection and estate furnishings. Over on Indian Canyon it’s designer heaven at Mitchells Palm Springs, where you’ll find Pucci, Gucci, Dior and more. Snag some cool sunglasses, shoes and bags.

The Modernista

It’s not just architecture that makes Palm Springs the modernism capital of the world. It’s everything! Modernism is a way of life here in Palm Springs. From cocktails to clothes, pools to supper clubs, décor to events. Palm Springs has killer mid-century furniture and accessory boutiques. Consider A La Mod, Modern Way; Bon Vivant for colored bottles and owls, and The Art of Nat Reed for works depicting the artist’s whimsical take on Palm Springs’ modernista architecture and life.

Discover Palm Springs

Desert Modernism

In the 1920s and ‘30s, European architectural pioneers brought Palm Springs a taste of the International Style. Following their lead, more architects created their own regional style, “Desert Modernism” from the 1930’s to the 1970’s by paying attention to the desert’s vistas, sun and light. These bold, innovative structures expressed the spirit of their unique time and place. Hollywood stars enjoyed the architecture, city fathers embraced it, and by the mid-1950s, the middle class adopted it as well.

Today, Palm Springs is known as a mecca of modernism across the globe, attracting architects, designers, and lovers of all things mid- century. Albert Frey’s “Tramway Gas Station”, now the City’s Visitor Center, welcomes incoming travelers with a kite-shaped roof set against the backdrop of the San Jacinto Mountains and a bright blue sky.

Biking or strolling through the neighborhoods you’ll find our popular colored doors in shades like orange, turquoise, sky blue and bluish green.

Tribal History

For at least 5,000 years, the Palm Springs area has been home to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. The Cahuilla Indian name for the Palm Springs area was Sec-he (boiling water) and the Spanish who arrived named it Agua Caliente (hot water). Then came the name “Palm Springs” in reference to both the native Washingtonia palm tree and the hot mineral springs on the tribal lands. Today, remnants of the traditional Cahuilla society exist in the exquisite canyons that the tribe has worked to protect, while current tribal leaders work within the community to help strengthen and protect today’s modern city.

The Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza, once open, will be a 5.8acre complex in downtown Palm Springs that features a new cultural museum and education garden. The Spa at Séc-he, adjacent to the Plaza, honors the history and heritage of the Tribe while introducing a new generation to the sacred hot mineral spring’s restorative properties.
