Our Temple - The Third Temple

The Haftarah for parshat Tetzaveh is from the Book of Ezekiel. In it, G‑d tells Ezekiel to tell the Jewish people the measurements and details of the Third Temple. This is followed by the measurements of the altar and the details of the future inauguration of the altar.

The connection to the parshah is that the parshah tells of the final details of the Mishkan's needs, including the incense altar. It also tells of the installation rites of the Kohanim, which included the inauguration of the altar.

The Haftarah begins with a command from G‑d to Ezekiel, "You, son of man, describe the House [of G‑d] to the House of Israel ... and let them measure its design ... Write it before their eyes, so that they may preserve all its form and all its rules, and they will do them."

This prophecy was said to Ezekiel at the beginning of the Babylonian exile, which was a long time before the Jewish people returned to Israel and built the Second Temple. G‑d told him, "let them measure its design," which means that they should actively delve into the study of the measurements and dimensions of the Temple. The Midrash tells us that Ezekiel said to G‑d: "We are now in exile, let us first go out of exile and then we will learn the laws of the Temple."

The Haftarah continues: "This is the law of the House, on the head of the mountain, its entire border around it shall be Holy of Holies, behold, this is the law of the House."

What is the meaning of this verse? With the words "This is the law of the House," it seems to be introducing a central idea of the Temple. But then it tells you that is has to be "on the head of the mountain," and "its entire border around it shall be Holy of Holies." Then in concludes, "this

is the law of the House." What is this central idea?

The idea of a mountain is connected to our patriarch Abraham, who was called, "Abraham, who loved Me." The first two Temples were built in Jerusalem, on the mountain, and its central idea was the Jewish People's love to G‑d. And this is also true about our personal, inner Temple. G‑d wants to dwell in each and every one of us. This happens through our love of G‑d.

Regarding the Third Temple, the Haftarah says that it will be "on the head of the mountain." Just like the head is above the body and controls it, so is this is referring to a higher level of love, beyond the natural—a love called ahavah rabbah, “great love.”

"Its entire border around it shall be Holy of Holies." What surrounds the head? This is a love that is even greater than ahavah rabah. This love is called ahavah betanugim, “love in delights.”

All this will come with the third Temple, which G‑d is building in heaven. However, it only becomes the Third Temple when it is completed and descends with the coming of Moshiach. This, of course, is dependent on our performance of mitzvot and Torah study, especially the study of the measurements and details of the Third Temple during this exile. This is how we participate in its construction. Because of our participation, the third Temple will be called "our Temple," the one we helped build.

It is all up to us. Through doing extra mitzvot, studying more Torah, and learning about the Third Temple, we will merit the coming of Moshiach and see the Third Temple that we helped build. May it happen soon.

Story Time THIS IS YOUR

FATHER

THE BRIDGE

In 5721 (1961), a group of Young Israel Intercollegiate Studens had a yechidus with the Rebbe at which the Rebbe answered their questions. One of the questions was “What is a Yiddishe Neshama?

The Rebbe answered thus: The Neshama in man is the spark that gives life to the body and all its functions. It is the power that facilitates the fulfillment of Torah and mitzvos.

I shall give you a further explanation. However, I am not sure that you will understand what I am going to say, for I myself am not at home in this mystical area, and you may be left with many questions. I will give you in short a rather philosophical explanation that is treated at length by the Rambam in his Pirush Hamishnayos.

The spark that gives light to the entire body is part of the essence of G-d. If not for the N’shomah, the Creator and the created would have nothing in common. However, in the abundant mercies of the Creator, He has given the created the ability to bridge the gap separating the finite and the Infinite Being. The soul is this means of communication between the Creator and created. Between the two, there exists an abyss. The soul is the connecting bridge. too.

(Toras Menachem, vol. 6, p. 95)

THIS IS YOUR FATHER

The mashpia in Lubavitch, R’ Michoel the Elder, would repeat to his students in yeshiva that when learning Chassidus – and from this we understand it applies to all Torah study – it must be not like one learns or reads letters from a

stranger, something that’s going on somewhere out there, but one needs to know that the words are directed at him.

He explained this with a parable. Once upon a time, there were ‘yishuvnikes’ who for reasons of livelihood lived in settlements where there were hardly any Jews, or even on their own. Over time, because of the disconnect from a Jewish environment and the absence of opportunities to learn in yeshivos and chadarim, there were those who despite being great yerei shomayim were ignorant and they could not even read.

A letter once came from a distant place to one of these people and since he couldn’t read, he brought the letter to the melamed, as was the practice, that several of these yishuvnikes would hire a melamed for their children and he would live equidistant from all the surrounding settlements so it would convenient for all to bring their children to him – for this man to read the letter for him.

When the melamed began reading the letter, he saw that it was about the passing of the yishuvnik’s father. As the melamed read it, the yishuvnik fainted.

R’ Michoel said to his students: The melamed was the one who was reading the letter. The yishuvnik, who was only listening to someone else, is the one who fainted. Why? The answer is, that to the melamed the letter was about a stranger; to the yishuvnik, it was about his father!

The nimshal is, when one learns Chassidus and thinks it’s someone else’s father, then he could learn Chassidus, read it correctly, and know what it says, and still won’t faint. When someone merely hears what his fellow is learning, but he knows that it’s meant for him, and that it is his Father in heaven, then he faints!

(Toras Menachem vol. 42, p. 164)

The Mysterious Prisoner

Previously:

the young Frierdiker Rebbe was jailed for protecting a Jewish butcher. In jail, he said Mishnayos and discovered a little calf. When he was freed, people realized the policeman stole the calf and blamed Dovid.

"I heard that there's a small cow tied up in the jail," Meir announced. “That must be my stolen calf!”

The entire crowd marched to the jail cell and sure enough, the missing calf was there, all tied up. Now it was clear who the real thief was: the policeman who had hit Dovid!

serious. "You also learned an important lesson. Do you see how valuable it was that you knew so many Mishnayos by heart? If not for that, when you were sitting in jail, how would you be different than the calf tied up next to you? But since you knew Mishnayos and reviewed them in the jail cell, those long hours passed with words of Torah and davening. And that made you much greater than the animal next to you!”

Reaching into his pocket, the Rebbe Rashab took out ten

“Arrest this lying policeman!” the police chief commanded. “And Dovid, you’re free to go home.” Boruch Hashem!

Sometime later, when the Rebbe Rashab came home, the Frierdiker Rebbe shared this whole adventure with his father. "You did a very good thing, helping an ehrliche Yid," the Rebbe Rashab said proudly.

Then, the Rebbe's face turned

The Frierdiker Rebbe could have been scared in jail, but instead, he stayed calm, focusing on davening and reviewing his Mishnayos.
