Beyond Speech

The Redemption Is Becoming a Reality

Parshat Mishpatim begins: "And these are the laws that you should set before them." It is strange for a parshah to begin with "and," which means that what comes next is in addition to what came before. What does that mean here?

In the previous portion we had read about the giving of the 10 Commandments at Sinai. Rashi explains that "and" tells us that “just as the former [10 Commandments] were from Sinai, so are these [latter mitzvahs] from Sinai."

The previous parshah ended with laws about the Temple altar. Rashi asks: "Why is the parshah of laws next to the parshah of the altar? To teach you that the Sanhedrin, should be next to the Temple."

Now that we know that the laws here symbolize the Sanhedrin, the Jewish court, we will understand why the verse requires that the laws be placed "before them." As Rashi explains, you should bring your disputes before the Jewish court, "and not before that of the nations, and even if you know that they judge a certain law like Jewish law, don't bring it to their courts."

If they adjudicate the law in the same way as the Jewish court, why not bring it before them?

The point that Rashi is clarifying is that the laws that follow are from Sinai, from G‑d. Even though they make sense, to the point that even the non Jewish people see them the same way, we should keep them not because they make sense, but because they are G‑d’s will.

Perhaps we can take it a step further. The reason it makes sense to us and even to the world, is because it is G‑d's wisdom, the Torah. Because the Torah is the blueprint with which G‑d created the world, and it is the system that G‑d imbued in the world, it makes sense.

Why does Rashi say "in addition to the first?" It is because there was something new that was added with the giving of these laws at Sinai that could now be understood. This is in line with what the

Midrash tells us, that the separation between above and below was removed when the Torah was given. Now we can understand G‑d's wisdom. In other words, G‑d's wisdom can permeate our minds and the minds of the people of the world. This is why in some cases, their law is in agreement with Torah.

In truth, when the other nations rule in line with the seven laws that G‑d gave to the children of Noah, even though they make sense, they should do it because it's G‑d's will. When they do, they receive the title, "The Pious of the Nations of the World." This is because they are also obligated to believe in G‑d and shun idol worship.

This will be realized in its fullest when Moshiach comes. As the Rambam says, "there will not be any occupation, other than to know G‑d ... As it says, "For the world will be filled with the knowledge of G‑d." And this is true for the nations of the world as well. At that time, people will be able to grasp and understand the "knowledge of G‑d," the deep esoteric concepts that we experienced at the giving of the Torah, with their minds.

Parshat Mishpatim follows the laws of the altar in parshat Yitro. And, as mentioned above, "Why is the parshah of laws next to the parshah of the altar? To teach you that the Sanhedrin should be next to the Temple." And it precedes parshat Terumah, which has the verse, "You shall make for Me a sanctuary," which is the commandment to build the Temple. Both of these laws reach their ultimate perfection with the coming of Moshiach, when the Sanhedrin will be at the highest level of Torah knowledge and will be next to the third and everlasting Temple.

Sandwiched between them is the parshah of Mishpatim, symbolic of G‑d's knowledge being understood by the people. Meaning that the idea of the redemption also becomes a reality in the minds of the people of the world. And this becomes clearer and clearer as the redemption nears. May he come soon. The time has come.

The Yarmulke Not Falling During Sleep

HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO DESCEND TO A BODY

In the time of the Baal Shem Tov, there was a rich woman who would donate a lot of money to him, for the causes he collected for. One time, the woman crossed a river and drowned. When the Baal Shem Tov found out, he decreed that the river should dry up. The angel of the river went to the heavenly court with a complaint against the Baal Shem Tov, and the sentence was that since the Baal Shem Tov already decreed that the river should dry up, that was impossible to change, because what a tzaddik decrees, Hashem fulfills. But it was decided that if a descendant of the Baal Shem Tov would go to this river, the river would come back and that descendant would drown.

The Baal Shem Tov commanded all his descendants to stay away from that place, and they did.

Many years after the Baal Shem Tov departed this world, one of his descendants was traveling when a strong wind began to blow and a heavy snow fell and covered the earth so that he didn’t know where he was and he went to that place where previously there had been a river. The river immediately began to flow and he began to drown. He began to cry out and ask for mercy in the merit of his grandfather. He was still screaming when he saw a sort of candle floating on the water. He grasped it and emerged in peace.

The Baal Shem Tov later came to him in a dream and said, “I left the world quite some time ago. When they told me you were drowning, I went down to save you but if I had known how hard it is to go down to the world, I would have forgone you and your children and would not have gone down.”

When the mashpia, R’ Shmuel Gronem told this story, he said that from here we see how much a

person cares about his children and grandchildren, because this is an essential bond. Therefore, although the Baal Shem Tov had passed away quite some time before and he had risen in Gan Eden to great heights, from strength to strength, still, when he was told that one of his descendants was drowning, he left everything and hurried to save him.

We also see from here the difficulty a neshama has descending to a body. Despite the essential bond we have with relatives, and his descent wasn’t in a body but in something refined like fire, he still said that if he had known how difficult it would be, he would not have descended.

After explaining this at length, the mashpia taught the niggun that elder Chassidim would sing, “When the neshama descends into a body, it cries out vai, vai,” and it is told, “This descent is for an ascent.”

(Shemuos V’Sippurim vol. 1, p. 12)

THE YARMULKE NOT FALLING DURING SLEEP

The mashpia, R’ Nissan Nemenov, would say that if a yarmulke fell off while a person is asleep, it proved that the head wasn’t clean of foreign thoughts.

The mashpia, R’ Yosef Yitzchok Gansbourg said that when he was a child, he walked into yeshiva during a farbrengen and R’ Nissan said that if a person’s yarmulka fell off while he was asleep, he was “poreik ol” (he cast off the yoke). R’ Nissan cried out about this from the depths of his heart and it was apparent that this truly bothered him, and this affected the child so much that from then on, it never happened that his yarmulka fell off his head while he slept.

The Mysterious Prisoner

Previously:

Yosef Yitzchak protected a Jewish butcher and was thrown into jail Instead of being afraid, even when he heard a strange sound, he stayed strong and said Mishnayos

When he finished going over everything he'd learned by heart, he began davening Mincha While he davened, he tried his best to stay focused and ignore the noise in the darkness. But as soon as he finished davening, he heard it again!

“Uuuuuuhhhhhhh ”

3

Rebbe stared in amazement.

“But who would tie up a little calf and throw it in jail? Poor little cow!”

After a few seconds, the match burned out But now, the Frierdiker Rebbe understood the mysterious sounds He had a cellmate a little calf! With the mystery solved, the Frierdiker Rebbe went back to saying Mishnayos

Finally, after what felt like hours the jail door creaked

The Frierdiker Rebbe took a deep breath Then he remembered that his friend Shimon had given him some matches earlier that day! Quickly, the Frierdiker Rebbe took them out of his pocket and lit one The tiny flame flickered to life and the young boy couldn’t believe his eyes! In the opposite corner of the tiny jail cell, a small brown and white calf stood looking at him sadly

“Uuuuuuhhhhhhh ” it squirmed uncomfortably “A calf?” The young Frierdiker

of the respected Rabbi, the Raza Please forgive us you ' re free to go immediately!"

At the time of this story, the Frierdiker Rebbe’s father, the Rebbe Rashab, wasn’t in town But the Rebbe Rashab’s older brother, Reb Zalman Aharon, had many connections in the government When he heard his nephew was in trouble, he quickly arranged for him to be freed TO BE CONTINUED...
