Story Time

The Paradox of the Second Soul

The Rebbe Rayatz relates what he heard from his father, the Rebbe Rashab, when he was 12 years old in the winter of 5652 (1892), when he was learning with him the words in Tanya: “And the second soul in a Jew is truly a part of G-d above.”

His father explained that the words “above” (mi’maal) and “literally” (mamash) connote opposites. “Above” describes spirituality within spirituality, while “mamash” describes physicality within physicality. He clarified that this is the greatness of the divine soul - that being spirituality within spirituality, it operates in physicality within physicality.

When the Rebbe Rayatz repeated this idea to his teacher, R’ Nissan, he reminded him of what the Rebbe Rashab had told about this matter at a farbrengen on Shabbos Parshas Beshalach in the year 5650 (1890), and gave the notes he had written then to copy. One of the ideas discussed then was what the Rebbe Maharash had told him in yechidus.

Among other things, he related that when his grandfather - the Tzemach Tzedeklearned the words “And the second soul in a Jew is truly a part of G-d above,” he delved very deeply into the matter, and two things contradicted each other:

(a) “Part” is only a part, not the essence, but Divinity is the essence - ”a part of G-d.” How can these two coexist?

(b) “Above” means a lofty level, meaning at

some level that cannot be expressed in words, which is more lofty. “Literally” (mamash) refers to something that can be grasped and touched (mishush). It turns out that the level of “above” is limitless loftiness, while “mamash” means something tangible - and these are two opposites. So how do they come together?

The Tzemach Tzedek delved into the depth of these matters for a number of hours. The first matter of “a part of G-d” became clear to him, but he could not find any explanation for the second matter of “truly above” (mi’maal mamash).

After struggling with this for some time, the Tzemach Tzedek decided to ask his grandfather, the Alter Rebbe. After appropriate preparation, he asked him what is the inner meaning of the words mi’maal mamash.

The Alter Rebbe answered: “Mi’maal - ratzo (running forth); mamash - shov (returning).”

These two words opened the Tzemach Tzedek’s intellectual eyes, and he understood that the deeper the ratzo, the deeper the corresponding comprehension, so that the deeper the ratzo, the deeper the shov. And to achieve this “literally above,” the Atzmus, as it were, emanated a part of Himself, so that the ratzo and shov would be the soul’s.

Recipe of the week

Cabbage and Noodles

INGREDIENTS

1/4 cup Gefen Canola Oil

1 onion, sliced or diced

1/2 head cabbage, sliced thin

1 package Manischewitz Mini Bow Ties

1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

fresh ground black pepper (yes, even on Yom Tov)

3 tablespoons sugar (or to taste)

1 teaspoon Pereg Paprika

PREPARATION

1. Heat the oil in a large pan. Add onions and sauté until golden brown.

2. Add the cabbage, lower the flame, and let it slowly caramelize with the onions — about two hours on low. (Patience = flavor here!)

3. Cook the bow ties al dente, then transfer them to a large mixing bowl.

4. Add the cabbage-onion mixture to the pasta. Season with salt, pepper, sugar, and paprika. Mix well.

5. Serve warm — preferably with a cold glass of Baron Herzog White.
