“The reward of a mitzva is the mitzva.” The mitzva in its ultimate essence is the reward. The revelation of this essence will take place in the Time to Come. This is the “enduring principal of the mitzva.” However, man also “eats of its fruits in This World,” each mitzva according to its particular nature; i.e. when man has that particular need, he is answered.
Regarding this, the Rebbe Rayatz related: In the time of the Alter Rebbe, Chassidim in one of the communities had great anguish over the persecution by the Misnagdim and some of the Chassidim sat in jail because of the libels. When they were freed, they wrote a letter to the Alter Rebbe to inform him of the salvation.
In that community, there was a Chassid by the name of R’ Shimon who was average when it came to knowledge and grasp of Torah but was mekushar heart and soul to the Alter Rebbe. He would say, “Ai, the Rebbe, ai, the Rebbe.”
He was a blacksmith and made very little money. When they prepared the letter for the Alter Rebbe, R’ Shimon brought some money to pay for a special delivery person to bring the letter to the Rebbe.
In every community of Chassidim in those days there was a special committee which oversaw the communal matters of the Chassidim, and one of the elder Chassidim was the guide and educator. He would inform the Rebbe of anything that happened in the community.
When R’ Shimon brought his money, the members of the committee who knew him to be a pauper who earned little and whose wife and children were ill, told him he could not do
that but he insisted and said the relief [of the Rebbe] one hour earlier was more precious to him than all the money in the world.
When the matter came before the elder of the committee, the one appointed by the Rebbe as the guide and educator of the Chassidim in that town and the one who assessed the sums of money for tzedaka for the fund of Rabi Meir Baal HaNes and for maamad, he sided with R’ Shimon and even informed the Rebbe’s brother, Reb Yehuda Leib of what he [R’ Shimon] had done.
After some time, R’ Yaakov of Smilyan, the emissary of the Alter Rebbe to collect the donated monies from around the country, set out on his rounds and he went to that town too.
The Chassidim were astonished when in the presence of the entire community of Chassidim R’ Yaakov gave a letter, handwritten by the Alter Rebbe, to R’ Shimon the blacksmith to thank him for sending a special emissary to give him the good news. The Alter Rebbe blessed him that for this, Hashem should bless him to be one who related good news.
Not much later, R’ Shimon’s situation improved, his wife and children recovered and Hashem sent him success in his work. The Rebbe’s blessing was fulfilled.
This is the meaning of “the reward of a mitzva is a mitzva,” that by R’ Shimon the blacksmith doing a hiddur mitzva with mesirus nefesh - a mitzva that was primarily about Ahavas Yisrael, being truly happy with one’s fellow’s joy – through this, he merited material and spiritual good in what he needed of that very same thing.

Beyond Speech
Seeing Only the Beauty
By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz
This week’s haftarah is the fourth haftarah of consolation. First came Nachamu Nachamu, the consoling through prophets, but that is not enough. We want the real thing, and so now G-d Himself is doing the consoling.
The haftarah begins: “I, it is I, Who consoles you.” The Midrash on this verse says: “It is the way of a father to be compassionate . . . and it is the way of a mother to console . . . G-d says, ‘I will do [both] that of the father and that of the mother.’ ” In other words, the double expression of “I, it is I,” means that G-d will be compassionate, and He will also console us. What is the difference between compassion (rachamim), and consoling (nechamah)? How will these two be expressed when Moshiach will come?
Both compassion and consolation are ways of dealing with a painful situation. The difference is that compassion brings us to dealing with the pain—fixing the problem so that it ceases to exist. With consoling, the issue remains; however, you are comforted, finding a way to cope with the pain.
The same is when Moshiach will come. First, there will be consoling, as we will intellectually understand that the suffering wasn’t in vain. But then the revelation will increase, bringing the resurrection of the dead, and we won’t need consoling anymore. For starters, we will be reunited with our loved ones, and even more, we will begin to see the world from G-d’s perspective. We will see how everything we went through was good. In other words, the pain and suffering will not only cease to exist, it will be as if they were never there to begin with.
This is the difference between our perspective (seeing things from below) and G-d’s perspective
(seeing things from above). From above, everything is perfect; from below, things can be perceived as flawed. For example, gazing out at a beautiful expanse, you become taken with the breathtaking scene; it’s simply perfect. But if you actually take a walk through that beautiful expanse, then you begin to see flaws.
If you think about it, these flaws are also part of what makes the scenery so beautiful. So perhaps they are not flaws at all—just perceived flaws, which are truly perfection.
When Moshiach comes, we will see how everything is truly perfect. But you don’t have to wait for Moshiach to come to take on this perspective. The more you learn about G-d, the more you are in tune with His view of things. This is why great tzaddikim remain happy through poverty and suffering. They are so aligned with G-d that they don’t perceive the bad at all; from their perspective, everything is just right.
We can take advantage of this way of thinking. When going through a difficult time, when G-d hands you difficulties, you can see it as flawed and bad, or you can choose to see it from His perspective—that this, too, is perfect and good.
This is a lesson I learned from my mother. Growing up with my older brother Shalom, a boy with special needs, I never saw her treat him as anything less than perfect. It was not easy and is still not easy, but she sees him as the gift from G-d that he is and understands that G-d wanted her to mother him in the way that only she can.
May G-d send Moshiach already. We are ready for the consoling, the compassion and the perfection. May it happen soon.
