The “Aleph" Of Chassidus

THE “ALEPH ” OF CHASSIDUS

The renowned chassid Rabbi Moshe Meisels of Vilna, youngest of Rabbi Shneur Zalman’s disciples, once told Rabbi Eizik of Homel: “The aleph of Chassidus saved me from a certain death.”

What was he referring to?

Reb Moshe, an extremely learned man, was fluent in German, Russian, Polish and French. During Napoleon’s war on Russia he served as a translator for the French High Command. The Alter Rebbe had charged him to associate with the French military officials, to attain a position in their service, and to convey all that he learned to the commanders of the Russian army. Within a short while Reb Moshe had succeeded in gaining the favor of the chief commanders of Napoleon’s army and was privy to their most secret plans.

“The High Command of the French army was meeting,” related Reb Moshe “and hotly debating the maneuvers and the arrangement of the flanks for the upcoming battle. The maps were spread on the floor, and the generals were examining the roads and trails, unable to reach a decision. Time was short. Tomorrow, or, at the very latest, the day after, the battle on the environs of Vilna must begin.

“They were still debating when the door flew open with a crash. The guard stationed inside the door was greatly alarmed and drew his revolver. So great was the commotion, that everyone thought that the enemy had burst in in an attempt to capture the French Chief Command...

“But it was Napoleon himself who appeared in the doorway. The Emperor’s face was dark with fury. He stormed into the room and

raged: ‘Has the battle been planned? Have the orders to form the flanks been issued?’

“ ‘And who is this stranger?!’ he continued, pointing to me. In a flash he was at my side. ‘You are a spy for Russia!’ he thundered, and placed his hand upon my chest to feel the pounding heart of a man exposed.

“At that moment, the aleph of Chassidus stood by me. My mind commanded my heart to beat not an increment faster. In an unwavering voice I said: ‘The commanders of His Highness the Emperor have taken me as their interpreter, as I am knowledgeable in the languages crucial to the carrying out of their duties...’”

Reb Moshe ended by remarking: “The (Alter) Rebbe taught us that the aleph of Chassidus is to use our natural traits and instincts in avoda. The beginning of avoda is to employ the natural characteristics of man’s powers, for example the natural dominion of mind over heart.*

(Hayom Yom 19 Adar II; Igros of the Rebbe Rayatz Vol. 3 p. 313, translated in “Once Upon a Chassid”)

THE ALTER REBBE “BEINONI”

The Alter Rebbe farbrenged with his Chassidim on Yud-Tes Kislev and said about himself, “Like me, a Beinoni.” The Chassid, R’ Mordechai of Liepli said, “Rebbe, I also am not a Rasha...”

The Alter Rebbe said, “A Beinoni is an entire world,” or in another version, “Within ‘Beinoni’ there are many levels, 500 levels.”

(Ramach Osiyos, ch. 187)

Beyond Speech

To Speak Nicely

This week’s Torah portion is called Emor, which means “say.” The name of each portion holds special significance and a lesson for life. The Midrash says regarding the opening words of our Parshah, “the sayings of G‑d are pure sayings.” Emor is a command to say something pure, emulating G‑d. While we were already taught not to speak ill about others, here the Torah wants us to say something positive about another. Our words have power.

When we speak negatively about someone, we affect that person negatively. This is why lashon hara (“evil speech”) is so bad. It damages three people: the speaker, the listener, and especially, the one being spoken about.

In the same way, speaking positively about someone will affect that person positively. But how can I speak well of a person who does wrong? He received a Jewish education just like me; he should know better!

There are two answers, both found in Pirkei Avot, “The Ethics of Our Fathers.”

The first is: “Don’t judge your comrade until you are in his situation.” By this measure, when you see your friend failing in a certain area, you should consider the circumstance that may have caused him to fall short. If he would have been in more favorable circumstances, then he would not have failed.

The problem with this approach is that although you have found a way to explain away your friend’s failings, he remains a failure in your eyes. This, obviously, cannot be the message of our parshah, which enjoins us to speak positively .

The second is: “Judge every person favorably.” Here, you focus on the positive. You recognize that every person is given challenges, according to the loftiness of his soul. The greater the soul, the greater the challenge, the greater the ability to overcome. Along these lines, you see the positive qualities in your friend. Although there seems to be a negative, you choose not to focus on that. Eventually, if you practice this approach long enough, you will cease to see the negative and only see the greatness in others.

Now, this is worth saying. Imagine how this boost of true praise will affect the person being spoken about. This kind of praise can strengthen him. This is the kind of speech the name of our parshah alludes to.

Even when I was young, I tried to find ways to lift other’s spirits. Of course, I said hurtful things, too, which I regret. But over the years, I have trained myself to see good things in people and to compliment them. Everyone has good in them; everyone has something worthy of some praise. When you expose that good, you raise the spirit of that person. And there is nothing better than that.

Just One Mitzvah

In a large, bustling town, there was a young man. Let's just call him Yankel. Stories about him flowed through the streets like water. He followed his heart's desires in all things: eating whatever he wanted even if it was not kosher and ending Shabbos early when he would get bored. Some mornings, a shopkeeper might even find his window broken or a few coins missing from the register.

1

The Rabbi studied Yankel's tattered coat and tired eyes and saw that he was truly sad. "Then start with one thing, my son," the Rabbi said at last, "Always tell the truth."

"The truth?" Yankel exclaimed. He couldn't believe it. "That's all?"

The Rabbi looked him straight in the eyes like no one usually did.

Cared for in a Cave

While in the cave, Rabbi Shimon and his son were taken care of by Hashem.

The Parade Must Go On!

Moishy’s friend from Online School is coming to visit Sipur Island! But can Moishy and Pinny actually be friends in person?

But deep down, Yankel had a sensitive neshama that was crying out to him. You see, a neshama always wants to do what's right. But how could he do teshuvah? He was so used to doing bad things.

One day, frustrated at his hopeless situation, Yankel marched towards the shul. Nobody was expecting to see him there. He pushed past the stares of the men learning and davening. Nervously, he approached an old talmid chacham.

"Promise me this, and the rest will follow. " So Yankel promised. Truth... it seemed like such a small thing. "This is going to be easy!" he thought.

"Rabbi," he said, his voice barely above a whisper, "I...I want to do teshuva. But it's too hard for me to do. Please help me find a way."

Can you guess what happened next?

Well, soon enough, Hashem sent him a test. Yankel spotted a purse on the ground in the market. It would be so easy for him to take it. No one was watching.

Well, he thought about snatching it, but then he remembered his promise. If someone came looking for it, he'd have to lie and say: "No, I didn't see it!" And lying was no longer an option for him! TO BE CONTINUED..
