The Reward For Ahavas Yisrael

A CRIPPLED BODY AND A WORKING HEART

Rabbi Menachem Zev Greenglass visited someone who had learned in yeshiva in his youth and then went off the derech. He spoke to him and urged him to do mitzvos but the man said that the Baal Shem Tov explained that the main thing is a Jew’s heart, “And I have a warm Jewish heart –what do I need mitzvos for?”

R’ Greenglass answered with a mashal: A person was in a serious car accident as a result of which his arms and legs did not work, he was blind in one eye and so on. Perhaps he was even in a coma, but his heart was still working. Would we be satisfied that he has a working heart? Only to a limited extent. Obviously, we would want the rest of his limbs to work properly and would be sad about his pathetic condition.

The same is true in the nimshal. The main significance of a Jewish heart is expressed in his mitzva observance.

(Parshiyos im ha’Rebbe Bamidbar p. 125)

THE REWARD FOR AHAVAS YISRAEL

In the Rebbe Rayatz’s famous “langeh briv”, he describes the trip of Reb Mordechai HaTzaddik, one of the Baal Shem Tov’s disciples, to bring close to Chassidus his friend from youth Reb Chaim Porush: On Motzoei Yom Kippur, several months after Reb Mordechai had begun succeeding

in his mission, he spoke in the town’s “grave diggers’ shul” in a gathering that attracted many of the towns people.

Reb Mordechai’s lecture comparing mitzvos without their inner intent to a body without a soul affected Reb Chaim greatly.

Having sat for so many years in the grave diggers’ Beis Medrash, and having attended so many funerals (may we be spared), an image of the faces of several corpses had remained engraved upon his mind. Now when Reb Mordechai compared study without vitality to a corpse without a soul, and he spoke about the cemetery of the dead pages of Gemara that they had studied, Reb Chaim was deeply moved.

In his imagination he pictured the cemetery for the pages of the Gemara, and a chevra kadisha of angels performing the funeral rites for the dead pages. As Reb Mordechai continued speaking, Reb Chaim, lost in the crowd and crammed among the people, continued to weep.

The more Reb Mordechai spoke words of arousal, the more bitterly Reb Chaim cried. When Reb Mordechai reached the part about “take pity on yourselves and on your own souls, that have entered your bodies to perfect the world around you ... bathe yourselves ... purify yourselves,” Reb Chaim began weeping violently; this made a deep impact upon all who were present in the Beis Medrash.

Rise Above: Shine a Little Light

This week’s Torah portion is called Shemini (“eighth”), which refers to the day after the seven days of training for the Kohanim (priests) before the inauguration of the Mishkan (Tabernacle). Until the eighth day, G-d’s presence did not fill the Mishkan, and the G-dly fire didn’t descend onto the altar.

What is it about the eighth that makes all the difference?

In nature, we find seven to be common. There are seven days of the week, seven years to our agricultural cycle. Kabbalah teaches that there are seven building blocks of creation, consisting of six emotional attributes, and the seventh, Malchut, which amplifies these attributes (note the parallel to the six days of the week and Shabbat).

We also find that music has seven notes, A through G. We even are told that King David had a lyre that had seven strings.

All these sevens are meant to bring to the eighth. What is the eighth?

The eighth is our true essence; it is our ability to transcend nature and connect with the part of ourselves that is above nature, our neshamah (soul). The neshamah is a part of G-d, and when we rise above nature, we feel our essential bond with Him.

The seven days of training brought them to the eighth day, on which G-d’s presence re-entered the Jewish community. This is because we once again found our way above

our physical selves and revealed our oneness with G-d.

Music has the ability to move us. Music is the language of the soul. The right music will uplift you and bring you closer to G-d.

Several years ago, while going through a rough patch, I wrote a song asking G-d to shine a little light and brighten what seemed to be a darkness I could not overcome. Later, I realized that there is no darkness that cannot be overcome. All I needed to do is dig deep inside and find the light inside me—my beautiful neshamah—and let it shine on myself and others. Writing the song uplifted me.

Once again, my family and I found ourselves in a dark situation when G-d gifted me with ALS. Every day seemed worse than the one before, as I was getting weaker each day. Then my daughter, Fruma, found the song, which I recorded on a cell phone. Once again, it was there to lift me up.

When my friend Chaim Marcus heard the song, he felt that the world should hear it. Gathering some of the greatest talent together, he produced this song, sparing nothing to make sure it was perfect—and it is. We are so thankful to all of those who put their talents and hearts into this project. Without you, it would still be just a little light.

It lifted me up, and I hope the song lifts you up as well.

Recipe of the week

Cheesy Stuffed Baked Potatoes

INGREDIENTS

3 potatoes, scrubbed well and dried

1 package Chevington

Oak Smoked

Cheddar Cheese

12 ounces Beleaves

Mini Broccoli Florets (half a bag)

PREPARATION

1. Wrap each baked potato in silver foil and place on a baking sheet. Bake on 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour to an hour and a half or until fork tender.

2. Meanwhile on a separate cookie sheet, place the broccoli in the oven together with the potatoes, checking them after about 40 minutes. You want them soft and tender, but not dried out.

3. Unwrap the potato, slice in half, score the potato, and scoop out the insides carefully, making sure not the break the outside of the potato.

4. Cut the cheese into small pieces. Restuff each potato with broccoli, the extra potato, and cheese, making sure to layer the cheese well. The more the better!

5. Place back into the oven on 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and crispy on the edges.
