“Having had three sons attend this school, I can confidently say that choosing it was one of the best decisions for my family. I was drawn to the smaller, more nurturing environment, where each child receives individualized attention, a strong education, and a foundation built on love and belief in their potential..”
- MRS. RIVKA KRINSKY
“A school with the high standards of Tomchei Tmimim and at the same time individual adaptation for each child ”
- RABBI YITZCHOK BLUMING
“I love how much attention the school gives to my boys— it’s like they really see each child as an individual. The environment is so positive and warm; my kids are thriving, and I couldn’t be happier!”
- MRS. SHANI NARBONI
“We made the move to TTOP five years ago, and we couldn’t be happier. The warmth, care, and “customer service” TTOP provides are unmatched. We looked for a moisad chinuch that does things with intention and proper thought, and we definitely found it. We’re so grateful to have such a school in our community!”
- BENNY AND CHANALE FRIEDMAN
“Choosing a yeshiva that I felt would provide my boys with a deep and personalized education led me to TTOP, and I couldn’t be happier with the decision. The amount they learn is remarkable, and the best part is seeing them learn with such CONFIDENCE!”
- MRS. SHAINA LEBOVIC
“The staff and parent body truly feel like one big family, and that sense of connection and care for talmidim is something we’ve never experienced anywhere else. It’s such an incredible feeling to be part of this Moisad!”
- RABBI YOSSI STERNBERG
By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz
The haftarah for Va’eira has two prophecies from our prophet Ezekiel, plus two verses from a previous prophecy.
The first prophecy is about the destruction of Egypt. G-d says that He will lay waste to Egypt; it will be uninhabited for 40 years, and then they will return, but Egypt will never be a superpower again.
The second prophecy in the haftarah is about Nebuchadrezzar (another name for Nebuchadnezzar). G-d says that He will give Egypt into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar and that his army will enjoy the spoils as a reward for capturing the city of Tzur (Tyre). They put so much effort into the siege of Tzur, but aside for its capture, the soldiers came away with nothing. All this because “the action which he carried out” was what G-d wanted to be done.
The haftarah is meant to resemble the parshah and bring out its theme. The first prophecy about the destruction of Egypt fits in nicely as explained earlier. But how does the prophecy of Nebuchadnezzar’s reward express the message of the parshah? True, his reward was the taking of Egypt, but that is merely a detail. What’s more, our parshah doesn’t mention anything about another empire conquering Egypt.
If we take a closer look at our parshah, it becomes clear. The parshah opens with Moses’ complaint to G-d. Moses had done what G-d asked him to do. He went to Pharaoh, and asked him to allow the Jewish people to go and serve G-d. And ever since then, the servitude only got worse. So he asked G-d: “Why did You make things worse for this nation?”
G-d answers: “I also heard the groaning of the
Children of Israel, that the Egyptians are enslaving them . . . Therefore tell the Children of Israel ‘I Am G-d, and I will take you out ... I will save you ... I will redeem you ... I will take you ... and I will bring you to the land...’”
How does this answer the question? He already heard their groaning before Pharaoh made things worse. Why didn’t G-d save them then?
We must conclude that the harsh servitude was somehow necessary and that it needed to get even worse before G-d could save them. What could possibly be the reason for this?
The purpose of our descent to Egypt was for us to receive the Torah. In order for the Torah to come down into the physical world, two things had to happen. First, we needed to become fitting vessels to receive the Torah. The main idea of the Torah is to do G-d’s will, and to do that, our will had to be nullified; that was done through the servitude in Egypt. This last blow, making it even harder for them, completed the process; now, we were ready.
Second, just as it was necessary for the Jewish people to be prepared for receiving the Torah, so did the world need to be prepared. Since Egypt was the superpower that ruled the world, it needed to recognize G-d.
So the theme of the parshah is getting ready to receive the Torah. And our main goal is that through our actions, through doing the mitzvahs, we become connected to the One who commanded us to do them: G-d.
Now we can understand how the second prophecy aligns with the message of the parshah. Nebuchadnezzar did just that—he did what G-d wanted, and he was rewarded.
In the time of the Baal Shem Tov, there was a rich woman who would donate a lot of money to him, for the causes he collected for. One time, the woman crossed a river and drowned. When the Baal Shem Tov found out, he decreed that the river should dry up. The angel of the river went to the heavenly court with a complaint against the Baal Shem Tov, and the sentence was that since the Baal Shem Tov already decreed that the river should dry up, that was impossible to change, because what a tzaddik decrees, Hashem fulfills. But it was decided that if a descendant of the Baal Shem Tov would go to this river, the river would come back and that descendant would drown.
The Baal Shem Tov commanded all his descendants to stay away from that place, and they did.
Many years after the Baal Shem Tov departed this world, one of his descendants was traveling when a strong wind began to blow and a heavy snow fell and covered the earth so that he didn’t know where he was and he went to that place where previously there had been a river. The river immediately began to flow and he began to drown. He began to cry out and ask for mercy in the merit of his grandfather. He was still screaming when he saw a sort of candle floating on the water. He grasped it and emerged in peace.
The Baal Shem Tov later came to him in a dream and said, “I left the world quite some time ago. When they told me you were drowning, I went down to save you but if I had known how hard it is to go down to the world, I would have forgone you and your children and would not have gone down.”
When the mashpia, R’ Shmuel Gronem told this story, he said that from here we see how much a
person cares about his children and grandchildren, because this is an essential bond. Therefore, although the Baal Shem Tov had passed away quite some time before and he had risen in Gan Eden to great heights, from strength to strength, still, when he was told that one of his descendants was drowning, he left everything and hurried to save him.
We also see from here the difficulty a neshama has descending to a body. Despite the essential bond we have with relatives, and his descent wasn’t in a body but in something refined like fire, he still said that if he had known how difficult it would be, he would not have descended.
After explaining this at length, the mashpia taught the niggun that elder Chassidim would sing, “When the neshama descends into a body, it cries out vai, vai,” and it is told, “This descent is for an ascent.”
(Shemuos V’Sippurim vol. 1, p. 12)
The mashpia, R’ Nissan Nemenov, would say that if a yarmulke fell off while a person is asleep, it proved that the head wasn’t clean of foreign thoughts.
The mashpia, R’ Yosef Yitzchok Gansbourg said that when he was a child, he walked into yeshiva during a farbrengen and R’ Nissan said that if a person’s yarmulka fell off while he was asleep, he was “poreik ol” (he cast off the yoke). R’ Nissan cried out about this from the depths of his heart and it was apparent that this truly bothered him, and this affected the child so much that from then on, it never happened that his yarmulka fell off his head while he slept.

1 red pepper, diced
1 rib celery, diced
3 cloves garlic, chopped or 3 cubes
Gefen Frozen Garlic salt, to taste pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon Lipton Onion Soup Mix
1 teaspoon paprika
2 and 1/2 cups cooked protein of choice, diced (leftovers from a previous meal are perfect!)
6 Ta’amti Potato Bourekas, defrosted
1 egg
6 SERVINGS
1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. In a large skillet, sauté the onion, celery, red pepper and garlic in oil. Season with salt and pepper and continue to sauté until softened. Add onion soup mix, paprika, and diced protein. Stir and cover to allow the mixture to heat through.
3. When warm, spoon the filling into sixounce ramekins until about three-fourths full. Carefully open up the defrosted bourekas, remove the potato filling and add it on top of the mixture within each ramekin. Fold the dough back over itself, as it was, and stretch gently to widen. Place the dough on top of each ramekin, pressing around the edge to seal. Beat the egg in a small bowl and use a brush to egg wash each surface. Poke two holes in each top to allow steam to escape and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until golden and crisp.
