On the Haftarah: Plant Now, Benefit Later
By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz
The haftarah for the portion of Shemot has one theme divided into three parts. The general theme is the blossoming of redemption. First, we go down into exile for a reason. Second, in the darkness of the exile is where we are able to accomplish the most, developing ourselves and the world for the ultimate redemption. Third, the gathering of the exiles is described, and how when Moshiach comes, we will reap the fruits of our labor in exile.
(There are also hints on how to bring Moshiach, through showing love to our fellow Jews.)
The connection to our Torah portion is that the Shemot begins with the descent of the Jewish people into Egypt. Then it tells of the hard labor and the amazing growth of the Jewish nation. Then, finally, comes the beginning of our redemption from Egypt, when G-d sent Moses to start the process of the Exodus.
Another connection is in the first verse of the haftarah. The parshah begins, “And these are the names of the Children of Israel who came to Egypt.” The haftarah also begins, “Those who came, whom Jacob caused to take root, Israel budded and blossomed, and they filled the face of the Earth with fruit.”The parshah also tells us how the Jewish people multiplied. Both Jacob and Israel are names of the Jewish people. When it comes to taking root, it says Jacob, but by budding and blossoming, it says Israel. Why?
“Jacob” refers to the Jewish people when they
interact with the physical world, which in the time of exile is a very dark place. It is symbolic of serving G-d out of “accepting the yoke” of His will, which is our main mode of service in exile. This form of service is not necessarily very meaningful, but it is the most powerful. It is compared to planting, which is hard, thankless work. Planting a small tasteless seed in the ground, where it is dark and cold. But it is there where this seed takes root and grows into a great tree. The transformation from a small seed to a large tree is exponentially great; the same is true about our service in exile. It is hard work— tasteless, cold and dark—but here is where our work takes root, and the transformation is well beyond our efforts.
“Israel” refers to the Jewish people’s interaction with the spiritual and the G-dly, which is mainly in the time of Moshiach. It is symbolic of serving G-d out of deep appreciation and understanding. It is compared to budding and blossoming, and the growth of fruit. Above ground, in the light and warmth, the budding and blossoming is visible and beautiful, and the fruit is tasty and enjoyable. In the light and revelation of G-d in the era of Moshiach, we will have the pleasure of seeing the accomplishments of our actions and the fruits of our labor.
All this will be possible only because of the seeds we planted in the exile. So our work now as Jacob, in the darkness of the exile, is what gives us the great pleasure as Israel, in the time of Moshiach.
How Do We Achieve Simcha?
WHY AN ENTIRE CHAPTER?
Rabbi Yeshaya Hertzl related:
One day, during Chassidus seder in yeshiva, the mashpia, R’ Shlomo Chaim Kesselman, called me over and asked why I thought an entire chapter was needed to explain how a person attains the fulfillment of such a seemingly simple mitzva as Ahavas Yisrael.
I said what I said and he continued to ask, “Anyway, how do you fulfill the mitzva of ‘v’ohavta l’reiach kamocha?’ Is it possible to love others exactly as you love yourself?”
This time, I said it was impossible.
He spoke to me for a while on this subject and tried to instill the idea in a deep way. He explained the spiritual aspect of the mitzva, how one attains making their soul primary and the body secondary and how this leads to a Jew loving others “like yourself.”
(R’ Shlomo Chaim, p. 464)
WHAT TO CONTEMPLATE
A person came out after speaking to the Tzemach Tzedek and he joyfully somersaulted in the courtyard. When he was asked why he was so happy, he said that he said to the Rebbe, “Rebbe, tell me Chassidus.”
The Rebbe said, “Why do you need Chassidus?”
He said, “I need it so I will have with what to daven.”
The Rebbe said, “You should meditate on ‘permeates all worlds,’ ‘surrounds all worlds,’ and ‘everything is as absolute naught in His presence.’”
(L’Shema Ozen, p. 250)
WILL LIVE BY HIS FAITH
In the time of the Mitteler Rebbe, there was an elderly woman, who was a member of the family, who was confined to bed for two years. Each time she felt unwell, they would give a pidyon nefesh for her to the Rebbe and her condition would improve.
Once, those close to her mustered the courage and they asked the Rebbe, “This woman is very old and in the treatment she is given on Shabbos, often they are lenient in matters of halacha even though there is a great doubt as to whether she will be able to observe many Shabbosos, so what is the purpose in giving a pidyon nefesh on her behalf?”
The Rebbe said, “She has emuna and with her emuna she will live!”
(HaLekach v’haLibuv p. 33)
WHY ARE YOU SO HAPPY?
There was once a Chassid called R’ Yosef Levitan – a man with a mellow mind, a mastery of Chassidus, and a cheerless nature. He was constantly deep in thought, and could meditate on a concept in Chassidus for hours on end.
One day after davening he asked his cheerful townsman, R’ Avrohom the Melamed, “Why are you so happy?”
R. Avrohom answered: “You’ve been meditating now for hours on end, and you still haven’t got there. But ‘the whole universe is filled with His glory!’ So you should be happy!”
