By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz
The haftarah for Vayechi tells of King David’s last words and instructions to his son Solomon, and gives a tally of his years as king. The connection to our parshah is Jacob’s last words to his children and Joseph’s last words to his brothers.
The haftarah begins to tell us that when the time of David’s passing was nearing, he instructed his son Solomon: “I am going the way of all the earth, and you should strengthen yourself and become a man (ish).”
At this point, Solomon was 12 years old, before bar mitzvah. These words are a message from every parent to their bar mitzvah boys crossing into manhood: “Strengthen yourself and become a man.” Why does he need to strengthen himself to become a man?
In Hebrew, there are four terms for the word “man”: adam, ish, enosh and gever. Adam refers to the intelligent aspect of a person, the mind. Ish is the emotional side, the heart. The last two, enosh and gever, are the way adam and ish express themselves. Enosh refers to emotional or intellectual weakness. Gever refers to emotional or intellectual strength. What is strange in this verse is the use of the word “ish,” which refers to the emotional. The reason why a boy enters manhood at 13 is because that is when he becomes a bar daas, his intellectual capacities have matured. Here, however, David uses the word “ish,” which has to do with his emotions.
The intellectual aspect of man remains in his thoughts and can only be expressed by coming through his emotional self, in speech and action. The development of a person’s intellectual prowess does not ensure that he will act correctly; that is why we find a lot of smart people doing stupid and destructive things. It takes effort to apply what you know, so that it affects how you act.
So while a boy enters manhood because of the natural development of his intellectual properties, it takes personal effort to apply what he knows to how he acts, because that is not natural. Therefore, David’s instructions to Solomon are: “I know that you are smart, but that won’t help you unless you can apply it to the way you act. So ‘strengthen yourself,’ meaning that you will have to put your own effort and hard work, to become an ‘ish,’ an emotionally well-developed person. Only then will your great wisdom be useful and serve you well.”
I see this with my own children as well. Thank G-d, I have been blessed with smart children, but I see how much work it takes for them to be the great kids they are. For me, there is no greater nachas than watching a child of mine growing up, and becoming a mensch and a Torah-observant Jew.
May our efforts we put into our children be fruitful. May we watch them grow into menschen, and may they always be a source of nachas—to G-d, to the Jewish people and to us.
A group of youth asked the Rebbe in yechidus why the spiritual level of women rose along with the revelation of Chassidus. The Rebbe answered:
In general terms this was so even before then, in a number of ways – except for Torah study which they did not learn with women except for those matters that pertained to the chinuch of children etc.
With the appearance and revelation of the approach of Chassidus, the emphasis was placed on everything being done joyfully. Even before that, it was possible for everything to be done, but the doing was automatic, while Chassidus innovated doing with joy. Chassidus also stresses that simcha is needed not only when learning or davening but also when doing a ‘small’ mitzva, which, in truth, is not small; it’s just that it appears to be small –and the same for all of a person’s needs, such as eating and the like, which need to be done properly.
Simcha cannot be attained when the action is done with kabbolas ol, without understanding. Therefore, it is necessary to explain about the greatness of the Creator and His supervision over everything He created, not only in the heavens but on earth too, which is what Chassidus teaches.
Since a woman can perform many more mitzvos in her capacity as the one who influences the children and imparts the chinuch to them, and she also has an influence on her husband, Chassidus demands that she too learn about the greatness of the Creator etc. so that her deeds too will be done with joy.
(Sefer HaYechidus p. 218)
A Chassid asked the Rebbe in yechidus how to achieve simcha. The Rebbe said: A person is happy when he feels he got something or he has something additional. The bigger the thing is that he received, the greater his joy. When one contemplates that a created being is limited and nevertheless, Hashem gave him the possibility, through fulfilling mitzvos, to connect with the Creator, which is the greatest possible elevation there could be, since any advantage that a person will imagine is limited and doesn’t come close to the advantage of connecting with the infinite Creator, through this comes the greatest possible joy.
Even if a person stumbled and did something contrary to what Hashem commanded, when contemplating and arriving at the awareness that although he transgressed Hashem’s command, Hashem gave him the ability and possibility of doing teshuva and by doing so, he becomes desirable to Hashem as he was before he sinned, so that they even become merits for him, as though he did a mitzva, then along with the feeling of bitterness that there is in teshuva, there is also the greatest joy because he is doing teshuva and becoming desirable to Hashem.
Therefore, always, at every time, a person can be happy, since either way, when he does what Hashem demands of him, he ought to be pleased by fulfilling a mitzva; and if he failed, chalila, and begins to have regrets, he should be pleased by being able to do teshuva and fix what he did wrong.

1 2 pounds salmon fillet, washed well and pin bones removed
1/2 bottle Heaven and Earth Liquid Aminos (about 1/2 cup)
3 tablespoons honey
6 tablespoons Heaven and Earth Lemon Juice (or freshly squeezed lemon juice)
2 cubes frozen garlic (or 2 cloves garlic, minced)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with olive oil. Place the salmon fillet on the prepared baking sheet, skin side down. Pat the salmon dry.
2. In a small pan or pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, about one to two minutes.
3. Add the liquid aminos, honey, and lemon juice to the skillet. Stir well to combine and bring to a simmer. Allow the glaze to cook for about two to three minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let cool for a minute.
4. Pour the glaze evenly over the salmon fillet, making sure the entire surface is covered. Bake the salmon in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the salmon flakes easily with a fork and is cooked through.
5. After baking, switch the oven to broil on high. Place the salmon under the broiler for about one minute, or until the glaze caramelizes slightly and the edges become golden. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
