A HealthShare is not health insurance. While both help pay for medical expenses, they are fundamentally different.
Insurance companies are for-profit corporations in which members purchase a policy to guarantee payment of their medical expenses.
HealthShares are non-profit organizations. They are powered by monthly member contributions which are used to pay for medical expenses that members incur. While payment of claims by a HealthShare is not allowed to be guaranteed, the sharing power of the membership ensures the needs of the community are continually met.
There are many membership benefits, though significant savings are the most prominent and most talked about.
Being HealthShares are non-profits, there is no need for inflated charges to increase the bottom line. Funds are used to pay for members’ medical expenses and cover minimal administrative and overhead costs — that is all. Unused contributions remain in member ShareFund accounts, accumulating for future expenses.
Additionally, by law, insurance companies must cover all pre-existing conditions and a variety of treatments not in line with religious beliefs. This translates into increased costs which are passed along to the end consumer in the form of higher premiums and deductibles.
HealthShares are not required to follow the same government stipulations. Rather, they have internal regulations based on their religious and ethical beliefs. They can keep costs down by limiting enrollment and setting guidelines for which expenses are eligible for sharing based on the needs of their community.
33% membership growth
39,334 medical expenses shared 2023
240 member cities
Furthermore, case managers are assigned for larger or complex medical matters (maternity care, surgeries, etc.). Case management gives members a personalized experience with a single point of contact walking them through the medical incident from start to finish.
Secondly, there is no such thing as “out of network” care. Members have the freedom to choose any provider and medical group they’d like, both in the US and worldwide with generous maximum reimbursement amounts.
There is also a higher purpose in a member’s monthly contribution. When someone pays $30K+ for traditional healthcare coverage which they thankfully don’t need to use, there is an internal “pang” from all the “wasted” money regardless that it is an important cost and not one they should forgo.
On the other hand, member contributions (a fraction of the traditional costs) become the sharing power of United Refuah. Yes, it may not have paid for a member’s personal medical expenses, but their contribution did not go to waste — it helped pay for the expenses and care of fellow community members. There is a tremendous satisfaction in knowing the their money helped others and didn’t just disappear into a corporate vacuum.
First and foremost, United Refuah is the ONLY Jewish HealthShare. All other legitimate shares are run by Christian or other religious ministries (see sidebar). A small number claim not to be faith-based — but that is against government regulations and members can be fined.
There is no red tape, insurance bureaucracy, or fighting with a system. The staff at United Refuah is looking to take care of its members — not deny claims.
Furthermore, the goal of United Refuah is to cater to the Jewish and Frum communities and their lifestyle. United Refuah’s framework, policies, and beliefs are centered around the needs of Frum families and continue to evolve and grow in line with the community’s priorities and input.
On a practical level, United Refuah is in a class of its own when it comes to the services provided. Many members have switched to United Refuah from other HealthShares for lower monthly contributions, more eligible expenses, and quicker pay-outs.
HOW IS IT FINANCIALLY FEASIBLE TO PAY FOR ALL THE HIGH-TICKET MEDICAL EXPENSES THAT COME ALONG WITH THE KA”H LARGE AND GROWING FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITY?
The numbers work and the system works.
Ask any of our members who have:
• had a baby on the program — even if a NICU stay was necessary, • visited the ER with a child — even if it resulted in emergency surgery,
• or sadly, had to deal with a new diagnosis for a serious illness r”l their expenses were happily and promptly shared.
Monthly contribution amounts, in addition to other member costs, have been lowered over the past five years, while sharing services were simultaneously increased. Two years ago, the Maximum Member CoShare was reduced by 50%, thus saving members thousands of dollars each year. Whereas a family membership previously would pay up to $8,000 a year, they now only pay $4,000. A single’s CoShare is only $1,000.
This is feasible because the concept of spreading expenses to be shared by a large a group is mathematically sound, especially when blessed with great Siyata Dishmaya and members who feel responsible for their spending decisions. A $50,000 hospital bill shared by thousands of members will only use a few dollars of each members’ contribution for the month.
As previously mentioned, there are limitations for individuals with pre-existing conditions, though that shouldn’t be a reason to completely dismiss HealthSharing. Our sensitive and experienced enrollment coordinators educate prospective members on what is/isn’t eligible so they can have complete clarity and make an informed decision.
Secondly, while some doctors bill the HealthShare directly, in many cases, members will self-pay for their appointment and then be reimbursed by United Refuah. There are multiple convenient ways to submit a claim and reimbursements are issued promptly — generally within 7 days. Members have to be OK with taking on that “administrative” task which for most, is well worth it.
Enrollment is open year-round and is simple to initiate on unitedrefuah.org. To learn more about United Refuah and find out if it is the right choice for you and your family, we welcome inquiries at (440) U-REFUAH / Info@unitedrefuah.org.
There has been much talk if one is halachically permitted to sign the be ylief statement of a Christian HealthShare Some rabbanim previously gave heterim, while others held it was unequivocally “yaharog v’al yaavor” to sign such a document ” even in case of great financial loss.
These discussions started close to 10 years ago when HealthSharing was still a relatively new concept. It was never a simple shaila, yet it has recently become more complex due to various changes.
1) In the past, there were some rabbanim who allowed signing due to the tremendous financial loss AND lack of any other option. With much Siyata Dishmaya and the flourishing of United Refuah, there is now a highly suitable alternative for the frum community. Because of this, many rabbanim, including gedolei yisroel from both l chassidish and litvish circles, have said their original heter no r longer stands
2) Liberty HealthShare, a popular HealthShare which previously had the most conservative belief statement, updated their required beliefs for joining or REMAINING members to include blatant statements of clear kfirah and avoda zara beliefs. Rabbanim and dayanim across the spectrum were shocked when they saw the new statements and were extremely disheartened that “word on the street” is they allow membership to such institutions.
It is the responsibility of every individual to ask their rav for a personal psak It is a serious shaila that needs to be asked — regardless if one previously received a heter, and especially if one is relying on infor rmation received second-hand
It is a wonder what the religious board of these Christian ministries thinks when they see a large number of Jewish members (evident by location, zip-codes, etc.).
Are they OK with such participants asking for reimbursements based on a belief system they know is not truly believed?
Or are they satisfied with the knowledge that they accomplished their religious holy-mission — one our grandparents had to fight with the threat of death — in having members of the Jewish nation readily “accept” their heresy?
29-year-old Chani, a mother of four from Toms River, never fit into a conventional career box.
“I’m good with numbers and love solving problems, but I hated the sound of accounting. I love people, but wasn’t cut out for social work,” describes Chani.
“I moved from job to job, searching for that “thing” that lit me up. And, BH, as our family grew, I needed a career with potential for significant income growth.”
Chani enrolled in ODEO Academy, a 15-week online course that teaches frum women digital marketing fundamentals so they can confidently enter the industry.
For the first time, Chani saw a future that matched her family’s needs, income needs, and talents.
“Before ODEO, I’d given up on finding a stimulating career. Now, I’m working at a local marketing agency as a junior SEO strategist. I had no idea work could be so much fun.”
Danny Gavin, founder of ODEO Academy, says digital marketing is an ideal career for creative, smart women who aren’t suited to conventional jobs and want to create a long-term, lucrative career.
“Many careers have limited options for growth. Digital marketing is different. The more experience you have, the better your results, and the more you can earn.”
Don’t worry: digital marketing doesn’t mean spending your day on social media or Instagram.
Digital marketing is a broad term for anything a business does to promote themselves online.
“Imagine you want to send your sister a fruit platter for her baby’s bris. When you google “mehadrin fruit platter delivers in Ramat Eshkol,” the businesses that pop up first sell more. Ensuring a website shows up first is one example of digital marketing”, explains Danny.
Digital marketers work behind the scenes to help businesses grow online. They analyze, strategize, test, and find ways to boost business. Digital marketing mixes working with people, solving problems, performing research, and creative thinking.
“Every frum business is desperate for skilled digital marketers who understand the nuances of frum life. As
you gain experience, your salary rises fast.”
“If you’re one of those people with creative and analytical skills, it’s worth exploring digital marketing,” explains Danny.
Gavin knows what it takes to succeed in the field.
As a top digital marketing professor and founder of award-winning digital marketing firm Optidge, he’s taught hundreds of students and hired dozens of people for Optidge.
ODEO Academy combines high-level knowledge and the real-world skills companies look for when hiring digital marketers.
“You don’t need any prior knowledge. Some of my best employees and graduates were stay-at-home moms, teachers, or office managers. If you’re curious, hard-working, and enjoy solving problems, you’ll go far,” says Gavin.
ODEO has over 150 graduates from every age and stage of life. Whether they’re freelancing, working in-house, or running their own agencies, they’re thriving.
“ODEO gave me a new future,” shares Chani. “If you’re looking for an exciting, flexible career, you should explore digital marketing.”
About ODEO Academy: A 15-week comprehensive digital marketing exclusively for frum women. It combines theory, practical exercises, and live mentorship so you can confidently enter the field.

On Shabbat chol hamoed Sukkot, the haftarah is from the book of Ezekiel. It speaks about the war of Gog and Magog, which will be the prelude to the coming of Moshiach.1 It is followed by Ezekiel's vision of the Third Temple.
In the haftarah, Gog, king of Magog, together with his allies, which is understood to mean the whole world (this is hinted in the numerical value of the words Gog uMagog, which equal 70, the number of nations originally counted in the Torah) will converge on Jerusalem.
The haftarah then describes what G-d will do to Gog, Magog, his allies, and the lands that support the war. There will be an earthquake, many fires, and much more. The armies that will converge on Israel will be so vast that their weapons will provide fuel for seven years, and it will take seven months to bury all their dead.
After this war, hatred towards the Jewish people will cease, as all their opponents will be gone. It will be the war that will end all wars and everyone will accept G-d as their master.
Why do we read this haftarah on Shabbat chol hamoed Sukkot?
One connection is its similarity to the Torah reading. On Shabbat chol hamoed Sukkot, we read about the making of the second set of tablets, which signifies G-d's acceptance of the Jewish people after the sin of the Golden Calf. This can be seen as a new era of greatness and closeness between G-d and the Jewish people. Our haftarah also speaks of the acceptance of the Jewish people following this dark exile, which was brought on us, as we say in the holiday prayers, “because of our sins.” The difference between then and now is that the acceptance after the Golden Calf was followed
by an exile. However, when Moshiach comes, the acceptance will be complete and not to be followed by another exile.
Another connection is that according to many, the war of Gog and Magog will happen during the month of Tishrei. But why read it on Sukkot? Because in the haftarah of the first day of Sukkot, it speaks of the same war and mentions that the gentiles will have to keep the holiday of Sukkot. Another reason is that our haftarah tells about the transformation of the nations of the world, and on Sukkot 70 sacrifices were brought for the 70 nations of the world.
However, I feel that the main reason is that Sukkot is the holiday of the harvest, when we gather all the produce we toiled so hard for. On a spiritual level, we start to gather in the benefits of our efforts throughout the month of Elul, the High Holidays and the Ten Days of Repentance. After the war of Gog and Magog, we will reap the benefits of our toil in this dark exile and we will be forever together with G-d.
We are left with a question. I understand the connection between the haftarah and Sukkot, but why read it on Shabbat chol hamoed? Why not read it on the first day of Sukkot? The answer is that the message of the haftarah, while being connected to Sukkot, is not an annually recurring theme of the holiday. Since Shabbat chol hamoed doesn't occur every year, for example, when the first day of Sukkot is Shabbat, there is no Shabbat chol hamoed, it is the perfect time to have a message that connects to the holiday but is not recurring. This haftarah is about the coming of Moshiach, which we don't need to be recurring; we just need it to happen once, with or without a war. May he come soon.
The Tzemach Tzedek was sitting at the Shabbos table when he suddenly laughed a few times. Then the Rebbe explained why he laughed:
A few months before, when Czar Nikolai reviewed his soldiers, he got to talking with one of his Jewish soldiers. The czar liked him and said: If you change your religion, you will be considered like a son to my wife and me.
The soldier remained silent. They took him to an advanced course, as befits a prince, and high ministers served him.
The night before the conversion ceremony, the soldier couldn’t sleep and when he opened his knapsack he found a Tanya. When he opened it, it opened to chapter nineteen where it explains that every Jew can sacrifice his life al kiddush Hashem, because the inner Jewish spark is awakened full force. This entered his heart and he decided to remain loyal to his people and G-d.
In the morning, two ministers took him to the czar. The czar took him by one arm and the czarina by the other arm, and led him to where the ceremony would take place. On both sides stood rows of senior ministers. As they crossed a bridge over a river, the soldier extricated himself from their grasp and jumped into the river.
In heaven, there was a commotion about what he did and the heavenly court decided that there would be two rows of angels and they would lead him to Gan Eden and the Zeide [the Alter Rebbe] would dance toward him with the Tanya, and so it was. The angels stood
in two rows and the Zeide danced toward the soldier with his clothes rolled up.
When I saw this scene I laughed.
(Asifas Zekeinim –Intro to Meseches Rosh Hashana)
A bachur, Benzion Maroz had yechidus with the Rebbe Rashab and asked about what it says in Tanya that even the worthless of the worthless gives up his life al kiddush Hashem. How come he didn’t feel that he was ready to give up his life al kiddush Hashem?
The Rebbe said, “The day will yet come and this power will be revealed within you too.”
Indeed, during World War II, he became sick and was hospitalized around the time of the Christian holiday. Some youth saw him, an older man with a white beard and they decided he would make the perfect Santa. They told him to come to their party,
At first, when he saw the veiled threat on their faces, he was afraid to refuse. He had already begun to think of reasons about why it wasn’t outright forbidden because all he had to do was give out gifts, especially when it was a danger to his life because these youth could kill him for refusing.
Then he remembered that yechidus in which the Rebbe saw with ruach ha’kodesh that the day would come when he would have to reveal the power of mesirus nefesh and he immediately firmly refused and they left him alone.
