Beyond Speech

New Year Requests

In this week's portion, Haazinu, there is so much depth, so much meaning. Everyone should learn it and find personal meaning. You will find that it talks to you.

There is one verse that I keep going back to. It is a source of strength and meaning for me. Against the backdrop of Israel pinning their faith in idols and suffering at the hands of their enemies, G-d says "See now that it is I! I am the One, and there is no god like Me! I cause death and grant life. I strike, but I heal, and no one can rescue from My Hand!”

What about this verse gives me strength and meaning?

When I was diagnosed with ALS, there were two possible roads to travel: I could have fallen prey to the "why me?" attitude, sunken into depression and been miserable. Instead, knowing that this is from G-d, I knew that if He put me in this predicament, there must be a good reason. I chose to ask myself, how can I serve His purpose from my situation? What can be done from my position now, that could not have been accomplished when I was well?

True I can't do many of the things I once could. But with what I do have, I have found ways to make a difference. The things I love to do most, to teach and lift others up, I'm still doing. The method changed; before I would speak, now I write (I never dreamed I would become a writer). It seems that because of my predicament, my words are more effective.

The problem with "why me?" is that your focus is on me, the ultimate false deity. To this G-d says, "See it is I" who put you here. He tailor-made your scenario. Find your mission and strengths specifically from your situation. You don't have to be challenged with suffering to learn this lesson; you need only be alive, because "I kill and I bring to life." It is G-d that chooses you to be alive. Recognizing this is the beginning of meaning in your life. And if you are suffering, know that "I

strike and I heal." Again this is from G-d. There is purpose in your struggle that can only be realized through your struggle. Find a way to turn your pain into positive, your struggle into strength.

With all that said, we've struggled and suffered enough. It's time for Moshiach to come. ***

The portion of Haazinu is often read on Shabbat Shuva, the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In it you have a song which is a teaching, a rebuke, a warning, a promise and a prophecy wrapped into one.

We lived with this song all week, including Rosh Hashanah, the day humans were created.

It all fits nicely together. Rebuke all week followed by a promise of redemption on Rosh Hashanah.

The same heaven and earth created at this time of year is called to be witness for all eternity in the Torah portion.

What is the connection between Rosh Hashanah and Haazinu?

On Rosh Hashanah, we ask for our needs. It may seem shallow that on such a holy day, we are preoccupied with our mundane needs. Why is this day set aside for asking?

In Haazinu, the purpose of creation is clearly defined: Our mission to do G-d’s will, by which, through our efforts, we develop this world into a dwelling place for G-d. This will be realized at the time of the redemption.

On Rosh Hashanah, the day Adam was created, the mission of man began. Every year, we go to shul pledging to continue and finish the mission. That’s why we ask for our needs on Rosh Hashanah. We are asking for what we need to accomplish our mission. So don’t be shy; ask well.

May we see our mission fulfilled and witness the final redemption this year—the sooner the better!

Have a happy and sweet new year!

Story Time

Why Did The Tzemach Tzedek Laugh?

WHY DID THE TZEMACH TZEDEK LAUGH?

The Tzemach Tzedek was sitting at the Shabbos table when he suddenly laughed a few times. Then the Rebbe explained why he laughed:

A few months before, when Czar Nikolai reviewed his soldiers, he got to talking with one of his Jewish soldiers. The czar liked him and said: If you change your religion, you will be considered like a son to my wife and me.

The soldier remained silent. They took him to an advanced course, as befits a prince, and high ministers served him.

The night before the conversion ceremony, the soldier couldn’t sleep and when he opened his knapsack he found a Tanya. When he opened it, it opened to chapter nineteen where it explains that every Jew can sacrifice his life al kiddush Hashem, because the inner Jewish spark is awakened full force. This entered his heart and he decided to remain loyal to his people and G-d.

In the morning, two ministers took him to the czar. The czar took him by one arm and the czarina by the other arm, and led him to where the ceremony would take place. On both sides stood rows of senior ministers. As they crossed a bridge over a river, the soldier extricated himself from their grasp and jumped into the river.

In heaven, there was a commotion about what he did and the heavenly court decided that there would be two rows of angels and they would lead him to Gan Eden and the Zeide [the Alter Rebbe] would dance toward him with the Tanya, and so it was. The angels stood

in two rows and the Zeide danced toward the soldier with his clothes rolled up.

When I saw this scene I laughed.

(Asifas Zekeinim –Intro to Meseches Rosh Hashana)

THE DAY WILL COME

A bachur, Benzion Maroz had yechidus with the Rebbe Rashab and asked about what it says in Tanya that even the worthless of the worthless gives up his life al kiddush Hashem. How come he didn’t feel that he was ready to give up his life al kiddush Hashem?

The Rebbe said, “The day will yet come and this power will be revealed within you too.”

Indeed, during World War II, he became sick and was hospitalized around the time of the Christian holiday. Some youth saw him, an older man with a white beard and they decided he would make the perfect Santa. They told him to come to their party,

At first, when he saw the veiled threat on their faces, he was afraid to refuse. He had already begun to think of reasons about why it wasn’t outright forbidden because all he had to do was give out gifts, especially when it was a danger to his life because these youth could kill him for refusing.

Then he remembered that yechidus in which the Rebbe saw with ruach ha’kodesh that the day would come when he would have to reveal the power of mesirus nefesh and he immediately firmly refused and they left him alone.
