Black Straps Matter
How careful do I have to be in keeping my Retzuos black?
The requirement of retzuos to be black is halacha l’Moshe mi’Sinai, and thus has the imperative of a mitzvah d’oraisa to act stringently whenever in doubt. Since the black veneer may crack and fade over time, it is important to be aware of, and periodically check for, any disqualifying factors.
Areas that fade more quickly that require extra attention include the section of the retzua inside the maavarta (the opening in the back of the bayis), all sides of the knot on the yad, and the part that is wrapped around the hand.
What am I looking for?
There were poskim who reasoned that we should apply the principle of rubo k’kulo, “most” being considered as “all,” to the color of retzuos, like with other Torah-required measures. So as long the majority of the retzua was black, they reasoned, it would still be kosher b’dieved. Others rejected this applying of rubo k’kulo, because there are many cases of
Shulchan Aruch AR 33:4; Mishna Berura 33:19; Shut Maharshag, OC §7; Salmas Chaim, Vol. 3, §23; Halichos Shlomo, 4:28. STaM IN PRACTICE
Torah required measures the principle of rubo k’kulo does not not apply.
R. Shlomo Zalman Aurbach points out, however, that if the retzua would be called “black” if asked what color it was, and not “black and white”, even if you can see white spots or cracks, it is still called “black” without having to employ rubo k’kulo. This is because we judge the retzua’s color by its overall appearance. Keeping it entirely black, he goes on to mention though, personifies “beautifying the mitzvah” and is thus commendable.
How do I fix it?
tefillin” and
Simple: say “L’shaim k’dushas tefillin” and paint it black again. The paint (or marker) should be black, and should not contain any non-kosher animal products. If one used a standard black marker (and he knows the ingredients to be kosher), even if the color
is slightly tinged purple or blue, it is still considered to be black. It is still preferable for it to be a pure black though, and that is why they have specially designed markers and paint whose ingredients have been verified and whose color is pure black. They are available at most judaica or STaM stores.

HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES ANXIOUSLY LOOKING FORWARD FOR YOUR GENEROUS ASSISTANCE!
To every member of the Lubavitcher community:
During this month of preparation for Rosh Hashonoh, the ”head” of the New Year, we fondly recall our Rebbe’s words that this is an especially auspicious time for strengthening our deep bond of Hiskashrus with the ”Rosh Bnei Yisroel,” the ”head” of the Jewish people and leader of the generation.
Our Rebbeim explain that an important way to strengthen Hiskashrus is by participating in the Rebbe’s activities and concerns, consequently, by supporting an organization that brings together a number of these activities, the Hiskashrus is greater and stronger . Such an organization is Kupas Rabbeinu, which seeks to continue many of the Rebbe’s activities and concerns without change from the way he would conduct them himself.
Every year at this time, the Rebbe would call upon us to contribute generously to help needy families with their extra expenses for the coming month’s many Yomim Tovim. This also coincides with the special emphasis during this month of giving extra Tzedokah, (indicated in the Hebrew letters of the word ”Elul,” as explained in many Sichos etc.), as a vital way of preparing ourselves for the new year and arousing Divine mercy upon us. See sicho in the Hebrew text of this letter.
We therefore appeal to every individual man and woman to contribute generously to Kup as Rabbeinu, enabling us to fulfill the Rebbe’s desire to help all those who anxiously await our help. The greater your contribution, the more we can accomplish. Please do not forsake them!
Your generous contribution to Kupas Rabbeinu will be the appropriate vessel for receiving the abundant blessings of the Rebbe, who is its Nasi, that you may be blessed with a Ksiva Vachasima Tova for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually. May it help to bring the full revelation of Moshiach - our Rebbe - immediately now!
Wishing you a Ksiva Vachasima Tova for a good and sweet year,
On behalf of Kupas Rabbeinu, R’ Samuel Malamud Groner family R’ Yosef Boruch Spielman
P.S. Of course, you may send to Kupas Rabbeinu all contributions that you would send to the Rebbe; all will be devoted to the activities to which the Rebbe would devote them. You may also send Maimad, Keren-Hashono (this coming year 5785 - 355 days), Vov Tishrei, Yud Gimmel Tishrei Magbis etc. to Kupas Rabbeinu

The Barren Woman and the Waters of Noah
By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz
This week’s haftarah is read twice: once with on Parshat Noach and then again as the fifth haftorah of consolation on the week of Ki Teitzei.
The haftorah has a double theme. First, that when Moshiach comes, things will be so good that we will forget the hardships of the exile. Second, that the redemption will be final, never to be followed by another exile.
The haftarah begins: “Sing, barren one who has not given birth.” Who is the “barren one”?
The simple explanation is that G-d is talking to the city of Jerusalem, which feels like a barren woman, bereft of children. Although she had been desolate during this long exile, G-d tells her to sing—as now that Moshiach is here, her streets are once again filled with her children, the Jewish people. She doesn’t feel barren any more.
On a deeper level, Hashem is talking to those Jews who claim they are barren and have not given birth to Him. Meaning, he has totally disassociated himself from the Jewish nation. G-d is saying that even He will sing a “new song”—the song we will sing when Moshiach comes.
The revelation will be so great that we will break out in song, just as we did at the splitting of the sea. Every Jewish person will be included, even one who is “barren” of mitzvahs and in the darkest place. The revelation and transformation will be so great that he, too, will break out into song.
The exile will then seem as a fleeting dream, as the haftorah says, “for a brief moment I forsook you.” We read in Tehillim (Psalms), when G-d returns the exiles of Zion, we will say
that “we will have been as dreamers.” A dream feels real, but when you wake up, it fades away. This will be because, as the next verse continues: “With a little wrath, I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness, I will have compassion on you . . . ” When Moshiach comes, it will be so good, that the exile will feel like a brief moment.
Now the haftorah says: “Like the waters of Noach this is to me. Just as I swore to never again cover the earth with the waters of Noach, so have I sworn not to be wrathful with you and not to rebuke you.”
This verse is self-explanatory, except that G-d calls the flood “the waters of Noach.” Why?
Because the word “Noach” is like the word nachat (“satisfaction”), indicating that it is positive because it changed the world for good. The same is true about this exile. When Moshiach comes, we will see how everything we went through in this exile directly made the world ready for Moshiach. The reading concludes, that when Moshiach comes “ . . . My kindness will never depart from you, and my covenant of peace will never falter.”
Like bookends, this haftorah is read before and after the holiday season, and it sets the tone for the whole year because bringing Moshiach is at the core of our mission as the Jewish people. Like beacons of light, it is read at the beginning and the end of the year to remind us that though our work is difficult and the exile dark, what we are accomplishing is tremendous and our reward is even greater.
Perhaps it is your effort, your mitzvah, which will finally tip the scale and bring Moshiach. May he come soon.
Story Time
Why Did The Tzemach Tzedek Laugh?
WHY DID THE TZEMACH TZEDEK LAUGH?
The Tzemach Tzedek was sitting at the Shabbos table when he suddenly laughed a few times. Then the Rebbe explained why he laughed:
A few months before, when Czar Nikolai reviewed his soldiers, he got to talking with one of his Jewish soldiers. The czar liked him and said: If you change your religion, you will be considered like a son to my wife and me.
The soldier remained silent. They took him to an advanced course, as befits a prince, and high ministers served him.
The night before the conversion ceremony, the soldier couldn’t sleep and when he opened his knapsack he found a Tanya. When he opened it, it opened to chapter nineteen where it explains that every Jew can sacrifice his life al kiddush Hashem, because the inner Jewish spark is awakened full force. This entered his heart and he decided to remain loyal to his people and G-d.
In the morning, two ministers took him to the czar. The czar took him by one arm and the czarina by the other arm, and led him to where the ceremony would take place. On both sides stood rows of senior ministers. As they crossed a bridge over a river, the soldier extricated himself from their grasp and jumped into the river.
In heaven, there was a commotion about what he did and the heavenly court decided that there would be two rows of angels and they would lead him to Gan Eden and the Zeide [the Alter Rebbe] would dance toward
him with the Tanya, and so it was. The angels stood in two rows and the Zeide danced toward the soldier with his clothes rolled up.
When I saw this scene I laughed.
(Asifas Zekeinim –Intro to Meseches Rosh Hashana)
THE DAY WILL COME
A bachur, Benzion Maroz had yechidus with the Rebbe Rashab and asked about what it says in Tanya that even the worthless of the worthless gives up his life al kiddush Hashem. How come he didn’t feel that he was ready to give up his life al kiddush Hashem?
The Rebbe said, “The day will yet come and this power will be revealed within you too.”
Indeed, during World War II, he became sick and was hospitalized around the time of the Christian holiday. Some youth saw him, an older man with a white beard and they decided he would make the perfect Santa. They told him to come to their party, At first, when he saw the veiled threat on their faces, he was afraid to refuse. He had already begun to think of reasons about why it wasn’t outright forbidden because all he had to do was give out gifts, especially when it was a danger to his life because these youth could kill him for refusing.
Then he remembered that yechidus in which the Rebbe saw with ruach ha’kodesh that the day would come when he would have to reveal the power of mesirus nefesh and he immediately firmly refused and they left him alone.
