Why Confess If I Don’t Feel It?

In the portion of Bechukotai, we read that the Jewish people will confess their iniquity and their fathers’ iniquity (Leviticus 26:39). In the next verse, G-d promises that He will bring them into the land of their enemies (Leviticus 26:40). It would seem that after we admit our wrongdoings, Hashem would take us to the Promised Land.

What is the purpose of taking us to the land of our enemies, especially, when in the narrative, we are already in the land of our enemies (see verse 39)? What good does admitting our mistakes do for us? How can we apply this to our lives?

These verses come towards the end of a section filled with the consequences for not keeping the Torah and mitzvahs. We refuse because of our stubbornness—by not willing to open our hearts to accept G-d’s Torah and mitzvahs wholeheartedly and of our own will. It is only as a result of suffering that we admit our wrongdoing. But that is not a wholehearted confession, and this kind of confession does not grant forgiveness. Yet the Torah calls it a confession, so it must have some value.

Speech is powerful. The words we say have an effect on the people who hear them, as well as on the one speaking them. When confessing wrongdoing and committing to do better, it helps to say the words out loud, as your words will add strength to your commitment. Also, when one recognizes that he has sinned, putting what he has done to words may even cause him to regret what he did. Even in our case, when

the admission is half-hearted, it still has some good effect. It brings you the next step. G-d says, “ ... and I will bring them into the land of their enemies.” The key words here are: “and I will bring them.” It means that now G-d is taking a more involved stance. As Rashi explains, this is a good thing because it holds the promise that G-d will send his prophets to bring the people closer to Him. With the help of the prophets, we can arrive at true remorse and forgiveness.

This all came to pass during the Babylonian Exile, bringing us back to the Land of Israel for the Second Temple Era. However, before Moshiach comes, the Rambam writes that we will repent and immediately be redeemed. This is because we will return to G-d from our own free will and not because the pressure of the exile.

This is also true in our relationships. When you do something wrong, the best thing is to admit your wrongdoing, commit to change and ask for forgiveness. But for some, this pill may be too hard to swallow. This is when admitting that it wasn’t worth it (even if not admitting that the action itself was wrong) becomes a stepping stone to rebuilding the relationship. Working on it gets you closer to the person you wronged, and hopefully, will also earn you forgiveness.

THE INCLUSIVENESS OF ‘BEINONI’

WHAT A MAKIF OF KEDUSHA ACCOMPLISHES

Among the Chassidim of the Alter Rebbe, for every ten Chassidim there was one whose job it was to collect the maamad money to support the Rebbe’s household. He had a list of each of the givers. When he went to Liozna, he would go to the Rebbe and give him the list along with the money.

One of the people who davened in the minyan of the Chassidim deteriorated spiritually and the Chassidim didn’t include him in the minyan and stopped asking him for the maamad money which he used to give. When the Rebbe read the list, he saw that the name of Chassid which had appeared several times before, was not there. He asked why and was told that the Chassidim had distanced him from the minyan because of his unbefitting behavior and this is why his name wasn’t on the list.

The Rebbe said, “You didn’t do the right thing. You have no idea of the makif of holiness that a minyan Chabad accomplishes, and you have no idea of the nachas ruach up above if you prevent a Jew from doing even one small sin.”

THE INCLUSIVENESS OF ‘BEINONI’

Rabbi Hillel of Paritch said, “I used to learn closed off in my room, and when I came out and went to the Beis Medrash, all the people were like animals to me, until I learned Tanya and saw how inclusive the level of Beinoni is.”

HOW to TRANSLATE ‘YETZER HARA?’

The Chassid, Rabbi Yaakov Landau, went to Lubavitch with a number of distinguished people who wanted the Rebbe Rashab to order him to

accept the rabbinic position in their city.

When they told the Rebbe that they enjoyed hearing Chassidus from him, the Rebbe asked him what he taught them. He said he even taught Tanya and that this was a novelty for them, because until then, they hadn’t learned it in order to understand it properly. He explained that in order for them to understand it, he translated concepts into Yiddish, for example, “yetzer hara” he explained as evil naturalinclination.

The Rebbe told him that although it wasn’t possible to say that this was incorrect, because it is explained in Chassidus that the middos are rooted in the nature of the [enlivening] soul, and as it says in Kabbala “ze’eir anpin b’atika achid v’talya” [i.e. the world of emotion is united with and connected to the deepest aspect of the soul], but since it says in Eitz Chayim that there is an angel called yetzer hara, the word ‘naturalinclination’ doesn’t ‘ring’ right.

“It’s not to mean that you should tell your balabatim that there is an angel that dwells in their heart, but as I said, it doesn’t ring right,” said the Rebbe.

HE DID NOT SENSE WHAT WAS GOING ON AROUND HIM

The Rebbe Rashab participated in one of the funerals in Lubavitch. After the funeral, the Rebbe went into the yeshiva in order to say, “Yosheiv b’seiser,” and all the Chassidim went in with him. Understandably, it was very noisy but one of the tmimim was davening and he did not sense what was going on around him at all.

The Rebbe Rashab looked at him and said, “That is the perfect service of the Beinoni.”

Salmon Salad Deluxe

INGREDIENTS

Dressing

1/3 cup Gefen Canola Oil

1/4 cup cherry preserves

2 tablespoons Kedem White Wine Vinegar

2 teaspoons yellow mustard

Salad

3 fillets salmon, grilled

1 small pear, cored and coarsely chopped

1 avocado, peeled and chopped

PREPARATION

For the Salad

1. Flake salmon into large chunks.

2. In a large bowl, combine salmon, pear, avocado, green onions, and nuts. Toss with preserve mixture to coat. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

1/2 cup sliced green onions (about 4)

1/2 cup honey roasted almonds, coarsely chopped salt, to taste black pepper, to taste

2 cups Romaine lettuce, coarsely shredded

4 (10-inch) tortillas lemon wedges lime wedges

3. Serve with shredded romaine lettuce, folded tortillas and lemon and lime wedges. Great as a wrap too!

For the Dressing

1. Blend oil, cherry preserves, vinegar, and mustard until well combined.
