Honesty and Egypt

In the portion of Kedoshim, we find the mitzvah of making and keeping honest measuring tools. Whether they are for calculating weight, dry measures or liquid, they need to be accurate. It is forbidden to possess inaccurate measuring tools, even if you have no intention to use them.

With many mitzvahs, G-d signs off with “I am the L-rd” or “I am the L-rd your G-d.” After this mitzvah, He signs off with, “I am the L-rd your G-d who took you out of Egypt.”

What is the connection between honest weights and measures, and the exodus from Egypt? Also, why is it a sin to merely own them, even if you have no intention to use them?

The simple answer brought by Rashi is this: G-d took us out of Egypt to be a paragon of honesty. He also suggests that just like G-d could discern in Egypt who is a firstborn and who is not, so can He tell if someone falsifies his weights.

Perhaps there is a deeper reason. This is the way of the evil inclination: He doesn’t tell you to steal or rob another. You would never go for that. First, he says, “What is so bad to own these false weights? You’re not even going to use them.” Then he goes a step further. “What is the big deal if you use them? They are just a drop off.” And step by step, he drags you down until he’s made a thief out of you.

Owning false weights and measures are first steps. They are the beginning of dishonesty, even though no one was hurt by them. They represent ill intent and bad choices, which is the prelude

to more trouble down the line.

This is where Egypt comes in. Though Hashem decreed that the Jewish people would suffer by the hands of the Egyptians, each individual Egyptian had the freedom to choose not to oppress them. At a certain point, each individual Egyptian made those first bad choices that brought them to oppress the Jewish people.

G-d is saying: I took you out of Egypt, the place of ill intentions and bad choices. I want you to be better than them. I want you to be a beacon of goodness and honesty. And honesty is the starting point for all the mitzvahs and what defines you as My people. That is why I took you out of Egypt.

To dispel dishonesty, we first need to remove the self-acquired bad influences and temptations. You will find it freeing, like a weight being removed from your shoulders. And finally, being honest in business and with your acquaintances is the way you influence them to want to be more like you, and to follow in G-d’s ways.

And one more thing: By connecting honesty with the exodus from Egypt, G-d gives us an indication that honesty is a prerequisite to bringing the future redemption. May it come soon.

LIKE A SLOW CLOCK

HOW CAREFUL WE NEED TO BE

The Chassid, Rabbi Yitzchok Horowitz (R’ Itche der masmid) was known for his punctiliousness with kashrus. One time, he traveled by train for an entire day without eating anything. He finally acceded to the pleading of the Chassidim and drank tea which was made with an urn that they brought with them.

Afterward, his conscience began to bother him, lest the cup he used had absorbed something forbidden. He was known for his mind which ruled his body and he vomited what he drank.

Upon reaching the Rebbe Rashab, the Rebbe said to him, “Don’t you know how careful we must be with forbidden foods, for in no place in the Torah does it say, ‘rak chazak’ (only be strong) except with ‘from not eating.’”

PEREK 9: THE CHASSIDIC COSSACKS

Chassidim interpreted what the Alter Rebbe writes in his siddur, “Every soldier whose heart has been touched by fear of heaven,” to refer to “Chassidic Cossacks.”

To a Cossack, the horse is subservient to the rider; it’s not separate from him. It runs happily into fire and fears nothing, and when the Cossack defeats his enemy, the horse is pleased in its way. This is the bittul of a chariot to its rider.

BATTLE OF THE WIND AND THE SUN

The tamim R’ Avrohom Dovid Pevsner said that when he was a child, he read in a

storybook about the wind and sun who argued about who was stronger than who. The wind blew fiercely in order to get a man to remove his coat but the man more firmly wrapped his coat around himself. The windier it got, the more he huddled in his coat. When it was the sun’s turn and it began to shine, the man opened his coat and then took it off.

He explained that this is the advantage of Chassidus over Mussar. Mussar fights with the evil by presenting to man the punishments he can anticipate for his undesirable behavior but the yetzer hara fights back. Chassidus, on the other hand, illuminates and warms a person so that his negative behavior falls away automatically.

The mashpia, R’ Shlomo Chaim Kesselman used the mashal of a person who is on the level of a beinoni all his life. But if on even one day of the year he stumbles for a few minutes in a minor sin, he is still considered wicked. The mashal is of a clock that is accurate all year long but one day a year it’s inaccurate for a few minutes and then it reverts to its usual accuracy. This person can never rely on the accuracy of his clock because, perhaps, right now, the clock is wrong. For example, if he wants to rely on the clock to get to the train on time, it could happen that just then the clock is wrong and as a result, he will miss the train. It turns out that all year round he cannot rely on the clock.

The same is true for someone who stumbles only rarely.

Recipe of the week

INGREDIENTS

2 cups whole wheat pastry flour

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon Gefen Baking Soda

1/4 cup margarine

1/2 cup parve milk (ie. unflavored rice milk, soy milk, etc.), mixed with 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice

1 large egg

coarse salt, such as Manischewitz Kosher Salt, for sprinkling, optional

PREPARATION

1. CCombine flour, salt and baking soda in a bowl. Cut in the margarine until crumbly. Mix lemon juice into pareve milk and let stand for five minutes.

2.Add egg and pareve milk mixture to flour and knead until stiff dough forms. Add more flour, if needed.

3.Roll out dough on a floured surface to 1/8-inch thickness.

4.Cut into squares and place on lightly greased baking sheet. Prick with fork in a few spots. Sprinkle with coarse salt, if desired.

5.Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes or until lightly browned.
