How To Feel Free

Reading the Hagada at the Passover Seder enables us to fulfill the commandment of telling over the story of the Exodus from Egypt to our children.

In the Hagada we read that G-d took us out of Egypt Himself rather than have His angels do it. Why? If the objective was simply to free us from Egyptian bondage, wouldn't we be just as free had He sent angels to free us?

There is obviously something deeper happening here.

G-d freed us for a reason: to be His partner in creation, to finish what He started, to fulfill His ultimate goal - that we develop this world into a place that His Presence could dwell openly. (Midrash Tanchuma Nasso 16. Tanya chapter 36.)

G-d is ever present. However, nature was created so that it hides His presence. How then is it possible for us, mere creations, to change nature?

This is why G-d Himself redeemed us, because for us to affect creation, we had to be raised above creation. Angels can't reach that high so He did it Himself.

While we have physical existence, there is a part of us that transcends creation.

The Hagada elaborates this point, because a central theme of the Seder is not only the Exodus from Egypt, but also the ultimate redemption. The concluding blessing of the section of the Seder known as Maggid

("Telling") is, "Who redeemed us and redeemed our ancestors from Egypt... likewise He should bring us to ...the rebuilding of Your city." We pour a cup for Elijah the Prophet who will announce the Redemption. And we conclude the Seder "Next year in Jerusalem." All of these components remind us of the coming of Moshiach, when G-d's Presence will be revealed. Through our efforts we hasten Moshiach's coming. What gives us this ability? The fact that G-d raised us above creation.

How does one feel free when life is so difficult, and there are so many responsibilities? It seems that we are effected by creation not the other way around.

Freedom does not mean that life is free of challenges, rather that we recognize that G-d Himself put us into our situation and it is not a challenge at all. It is an opportunity that He is giving us to effect creation. You might ask me, "How could someone like you feel free when you are not able to move most of your body? How do you remain positive and happy in your predicament?

I choose to see it that way. You can too!

TIME TO MOVE ON

The Chassid, R’ Dovid Tzvi Chein (Radatz) was considered by the Chassidim to be a Beinoni. The Rebbe Maharash once said to him, “The time has already come to start thinking about Avodas ha’Tzaddikim.”

OTHERS NEED AND I WANT …

The Chassid, R’ Yehuda Leib Raskin was a member of the Rebbe Rayatz’s household. He once prepared a glass of tea for the Rebbe with milk and sugar, but when he went in later he saw that the glass was untouched. He said to the Rebbe, “The tea has gotten cold...”

The Rebbe said, “What about iskafia?”

The Chassid got up his courage and said, “He has already become a wise man or king,” meaning, the Rebbe was already on the level of a Tzaddik who did not need iskafia.

The Rebbe said, “Others need it; I want it.”

(Likutei Sippurim Hisvaaduyos p. 331)

NOT WANTING IT IS A GOOD SIGN!

A Chassid once asked the Mitteler Rebbe for a bracha that he should be “shayich” to avoda. The way he put it was, “What avoda is, I don’t know, but according to how much I don’t want it, I realize what a very good thing it is.”

(Sefer HaSichos 5700 p. 108)

HE ONLY SAW THE MAAMAR

The Rebbe Maharash once told the wealthy Chassid, R’ Monish Moneszon, in yechidus to review a certain maamar Chassidus 400 times in a row, only taking breaks for necessities. Since he knew that at home he would get mixed up in the middle, he went abroad, paid for a room in a hotel, and reviewed the

maamar as he had been told.

When he left the room, he saw nothing around him; he only saw the maamar in front of his eyes.

(Likutei Sippurim p. 221)

THE DEAF WHO HEARD WELL

One of the Chassidim of the Alter Rebbe was called R’ Eliyahu Ber the Deaf, even though he heard well. The reason was because he once heard a maamar Chassidus from the Tzemach Tzedek which was about controlling the body and the Rebbe said that lashon hara and rechilus should not be heard at all.

The Rebbe’s words affected him to such an extent that when people spoke lashon hara and rechilus, he did not hear it at all!

(Sefer HaSichos 5701, p. 22)

BALABUS OVER MOCHIN

At the nichum aveilim for the Rebbe, after the passing of Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka, one of the Admorim told a story that happened at the funeral of the daughter of the holy Rabbi Yaakov Yisroel of Cherkassy, the wife of his son-in-law R’ Meshulem Zushe:

R’ Yaakov Yisroel began to talk about the horses harnessed to the wagon and his son-in-law, who was immersed in grief commented, “How can you speak about that now?”

R’ Yaakov Yisrael said, “Ai, Zushe, I thought you were a greater baal mochin.”

Said the Rebbe, “From this saying it is understood that a Jew needs to be a balabus over his mochin too, and may Hashem grant success and bless everyone with everything that is needed, including also to be a balabus over mochin.”

Recipe of the week

Baked Cinnamon Pears

By Dining In, Kosher.com

INGREDIENTS

6 medium red or yellow pears

1 and 1/2 tablespoons Heaven & Earth Lemon Juice

5 tablespoons margarine, softened

1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed

2/3 cup raisins

1/2 teaspoon Gefen Cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 cup water

PREPARATION

1. Core pears. Pare off a half-inch-wide strip of peel around stem end.

2. Set pears upright in a nine-inch square baking dish. Sprinkle with lemon juice.

3. Mix margarine, brown sugar, raisins, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Divide mixture evenly among pear centers, packing in lightly. Distribute any remaining mixture in clumps in bottom of dish.

4. Pour water into dish and cover lightly with foil. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until pears are tender when pierced, 35–40 minutes. Spoon any sauce remaining in baking dish over pears and serve warm.
