A MILLION DOLLARS AND TEN CENTS
A TASTE OF THIS WORLD
On Shabbos, Lag B’Omer, R’ Nachum Shemaryahu Sossonkin was in Meron. After Shabbos he said, “Since, unfortunately, I did not find a single Chabad Chassid, I joined another group of Chassidim and they graciously invited me to for the Shabbos meal.
“During the meal, as they sang ‘Mei’ein Olam Haba’ in the Shabbos zemiros, I explained to them that just as they were singing now, in this world, thus it was being sung in the upper worlds, but with a slight difference. Up there, they say, “Mei’ein Olam Hazeh.”
Of course, they were taken aback by what I said and demanded an explanation. I said that what I said was based on what is explained in Chassidus on the words [describing Hashem as] “King who is praised [meshubach – also meaning of high quality] and glorified [mefoar – also meaning magnificent]” - meshubach means the service of angels which is a good, high quality service, as it says, “Do you have a yetzer hara among you?” Mefoar means the service of Jewish souls that came down to this world in bodies, for in fact “you have a yetzer hara among you,” and the animal soul bothers man with all sorts of tests. When, despite it all, one overcomes the tests and serves G-d, this is a magnificent service even if it’s not of such high quality and purity.
It turns out that in this world we envy the quality service of angels which is why we sing, ‘Mei’ein Olam Haba,’ while they envy our magnificent service here below and sing, “Mei’ein Olam Hazeh.”

Rabbi Yoel Kahn, the Chozer, related:
In the early years, the Rebbe would walk home from 770. Rabbi Chodakov, the Rebbe’s secretary, would accompany the Rebbe and if it was a yechidus night he would remain in his office until the end of yechidus and then walk the Rebbe home.
R’ Chodakov once called me and said that the previous night, as he escorted the Rebbe home, the Rebbe told him about an exchange he had with someone he saw in yechidus. The Rebbe said it was worthwhile writing it down and he would even edit it since it contained a directive to the public. This is why R’ Chodakov called me, so he could tell it to me and I would write it down and send it in for the Rebbe to edit.
Here is what the Rebbe said:
The person complained to the Rebbe that with every positive thing he did, he felt that he had various personal ulterior motives.
The Rebbe responded with a mashal. When a person does a business deal where he expects to earn a million dollars, and aside from the profit he would also make a profit of ten cents, obviously what occupies the person’s mind is only the profit of a million dollars, while the ten cents mean nothing to him.
So too, in service of G-d. When a Jew does a mitzva, he connects with G-d - “mitzva” from the root meaning connection. When a Jew will think about the significance of his connecting – he, a limited created being, with G-d, the unlimited Creator, then all other nonsense won’t mean anything to him. Just as someone thinks nothing of the ten cents when he is involved with a million-dollar deal, so too, when thinking about the bond with the Infinite One, all the vanities of the world mean nothing.

Chocolate Chip Cheesecake Cookies

INGREDIENTS
For the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
1 stick butter, softened 1/2 cup Haddar Brown Sugar, packed
1 large egg
1 teaspoon Gefen Vanilla Extract
1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, such as Glicks
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup Glicks Chocolate Chips
For the Cheesecake Layer
1. 8 ounces brick cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 a beaten egg
1/2 teaspoon Gefen Vanilla Extract
PREPARATION
1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (or 375 if you like a crispier cookie). Line a baking sheet with Gefen Parchment Paper.
2. Whisk the butter and sugars.
3. Add the eggs and vanilla and whisk again, until fully incorporated.
4. Use a fork to mix in the flour, baking soda, and salt. Feel free to use your hands at the end to get all the flour incorporated.
5. Fold in the chocolate chips.
6. Shape the dough into six extra large disks on the baking tray. Do not flatten.
7. In the same bowl you used for the cookie dough, whisk the softened cream cheese until smooth. Add the granulated sugar, 1/2 the egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
8. Take a tablespoon of the cheesecake batter and place it on top of a cookie dough disk. Continue with all cookie disks.
9. Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for about 20 to 22 minutes or until the edges are golden brown (or 18 to 20 minutes if you’re doing it at 375 degrees Fahrenheit). Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool.
