Without Guilt, From Their Hearts

In this week’s parsha, Vayakhel, we read about the participation of all the Jewish people, men and women, in donating to and construction of the Mishkan, the Tabernacle. The Torah tells us that women brought more than the men. But the fact is that they were not involved in the sin of the golden calf. Why were they so driven to be involved in its rectification?

Later, we had various Mishkans in Israel; and finally, the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem. Now that we have neither Mishkan nor Temple, how do we merit G-d’s presence in our midst?

Today, one of the ways to do the mitzvah of building a Mishkan is by making our homes a dwelling place for G-d. Each and every one of us can be involved: men by keeping Torah study and prayer times; women by keeping a kosher home; and children by getting a Torah education. Since the mother is the backbone of the Jewish home—and she naturally understands the value of having G-d’s presence blessing her home—she sets out to design and manage her home in a way that it will create an environment for His presence.

Although the men gave to and were involved in the construction of the Mishkan, their involvement didn’t reach the level and enthusiasm that the women displayed. Why? While the men were obligated to give, the women were not. The men gave from a sense of obligation, but the women gave from their hearts. The men felt the burden of guilt of sin golden calf, while the women felt their connection to G-d, and yearned for His presence and closeness.

Every man, woman and child can now give of themselves from a place of love and closeness. In this way, every family can make their home into a Mishkan.

In the Torah portion of Vayakhel, we read that both men and woman donated for the construction of the Mishkan. Everyone participated in its construction. It didn’t matter if they were rich or poor. It didn’t matter which tribe they were from. Each gave according to their ability, and each participated with the talents G-d gave them. They were careful to do everything the way Hashem wanted them to, down to the smallest detail. In the end, His presence filled the Mishkan, and He dwelled amongst them.

After 210 years of exile in Egypt—87 of which were fraught with terrible suffering and slavery—it must have been so satisfying, so exciting, to see the Shechinah (Divine Presence) fill the Mishkan.

What lessons can we learn from this?

We are here for a reason: to fashion this world into a dwelling place for G-d. Every one of us is necessary to ensure success. We are all different. We all have different abilities, different talents and different circumstances. We know we can do it, because we’ve done it once before when we built the Mishkan. The main thing is that we work together, and that we do it right. Small details matter. As in every project, it is not complete until each person does his or her part, and until the finishing touches have been completed.

WAS THE REBBE A PROFESSOR?

Once, when the Rebbe Rashab washed his hands for a meal, his younger brother, R’ Menachem Mendel told him in wonderment that he had just read in a Russian newspaper that medical experts had discovered a new vein which is full of a thin liquid which causes that when a person wants to remember something, he looks up, and when he wants to meditate on something, he inclines his head downward.

The Rebbe didn’t like being spoken to before saying “hamotzi.” He listened but did not respond. He dried his hands, ate a shiur, and then called over his brother and went over to the bookcase with him. He took out a small volume of handwritten Chassidus of the Mittler Rebbe and showed his brother six to seven lines that speak about this vein in the brain.

The Mittler Rebbe explains there that in the brain there is a vein full of vapor which moves back and forth and aids in memory and concentration. When the vein moves toward the brain of chochma and bina, it helps memory; when it moves toward the brain of daas, it helps in thinking in depth. Therefore, we see that when a person wants to remember something, he lifts his head, and when he wants to focus on something, he bends his head downward.

The Rebbe asked him, was the Mittler Rebbe a big doctor? No! He never studied medical matters, but since he knew that this is the way it is in the Seder Hishtalshelus, in Supernal Man, he understood that this is how things are with man down here too.

A TASTE OF THIS WORLD

On Shabbos, Lag B’Omer, R’ Nachum

Shemaryahu Sossonkin was in Meron. After Shabbos he said, “Since, unfortunately, I did not find a single Chabad Chassid, I joined another group of Chassidim and they graciously invited me to for the Shabbos meal.

“During the meal, as they sang ‘Mei’ein Olam Haba’ in the Shabbos zemiros, I explained to them that just as they were singing now, in this world, thus it was being sung in the upper worlds, but with a slight difference. Up there, they say, “Mei’ein Olam Hazeh.”

Of course, they were taken aback by what I said and demanded an explanation. I said that what I said was based on what is explained in Chassidus on the words [describing Hashem as] “King who is praised [meshubach – also meaning of high quality] and glorified [mefoar – also meaning magnificent]”meshubach means the service of angels which is a good, high quality service, as it says, “Do you have a yetzer hara among you?” Mefoar means the service of Jewish souls that came down to this world in bodies, for in fact “you have a yetzer hara among you,” and the animal soul bothers man with all sorts of tests. When, despite it all, one overcomes the tests and serves G-d, this is a magnificent service even if it’s not of such high quality and purity.

It turns out that in this world we envy the quality service of angels which is why we sing, ‘Mei’ein Olam Haba,’ while they envy our magnificent service here below and sing, “Mei’ein Olam Hazeh.”

Recipe of the week

Bagel Rolls

By Nitra Ladies Auxiliary, Kosher.com

INGREDIENTS

8 and 1/2 cups flour

2 ounces yeast

3 cups warm water, divided

2 tablespoons salt

7 tablespoons sugar poppy or sesame seeds (optional)

1–2 eggs, beaten, for egg wash

PREPARATION

1. Dissolve yeast in part of the water. Combine all ingredients and knead well. Let rise for 20 minutes.

2. Divide dough into 24 pieces. Roll each piece into seven-inch strands. Twist into pretzel shape.

3. Prepare a large pot of salted water and bring to a rolling boil.

4. One by one, drop each bagel into the pot. Cook for 30 seconds on each side. Drain and place on greased cookie sheet.

5. Brush with beaten egg, sprinkle with poppy or sesame seeds. Bake for 35 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Oncetheyweresettled,theRebbe

Maharashthenventuredintothehotel's gamingroom.Imaginesteppingintoa shadowyspacewheretheairwasthick withsmokeandthesoundsofcards shuffling,glassesclinking,andburstsof wildlaughter.Timeslipsawayinsucha place,andthewarmthandlightofTorah andmitzvosfeltaworldaparttothe chassidim.

Amongthecrowd,therewasayoungman playingcards.Heheldaglassofwineand wascompletelyimmersedinhisgame. ThisyoungmanwasaYid,andthiswas whotheRebbeMaharashwantedtosee.

Approachingtheyoungman,theRebbe Maharashplacedagentlehandonhis shoulderandtookaseatnexttohim.He lookedhimintheeyeandsaid:"Young man!Oneisnotallowedtodrinkwinethat isnotkosher!Suchwinedullsthesensitivity ofthemindandtheheart.ActlikeaJew!" Afterthisencounter,theRebbeMaharash wishedhimagoodnightandreturnedtohis suite.

Whatdoyouthinkhappenedtotheyoung man?Hecouldn'tstopthinkingaboutthe Rebbe'swords.Acoupleofhourslater, aftertossingandturninginbed,hedecided togobackandfindthepersonwhohad spokentohim.Heaskedaroundthehotel,

untilhefoundtheRebbeMaharash.The youngmanspentalongtimeintheRebbe’s room,andthenextday,theRebbereturned home.

Theyoungmanchangedhiswaysand cameclosertoHashem.Eventually,hehad thezchustoleadabeautiful,frumfamily. Sometimelater,theRebbeMaharash explainedtothechassidimthatsuchapure neshamahadnotcomedowntotheworld inmanygenerations.Sadly,thisprecious neshamalostitselfinawfulplaces.But now,ithadthegreatprivilegeofdoing teshuvah!
