During this month of preparation for Rosh Hashonoh, the ”head” of the New Year, we fondly recall our Rebbe’s words that this is an especially auspicious time for strengthening our deep bond of Hiskashrus with the ”Rosh Bnei Yisroel,” the ”head” of the Jewish people and leader of the generation.

Our Rebbeim explain that an important way to strengthen Hiskashrus is by participating in the Rebbe’s activities and concerns, consequently, by supporting an organization that brings together a number of these activities, the Hiskashrus is greater and stronger . Such an organization is Kupas Rabbeinu, which seeks to continue many of the Rebbe’s activities and concerns without change from the way he would conduct them himself.

THE SOUR FOOD WHICH BECAME SWEET

NO LONGER ABLE TO ANNUL It

The holy Rabbi Aharon of Karlin said that if some decree was issued after he died and they would go to his grave to ask that the decree be canceled, he would try up above to change the decree. It once happened that they prayed at his grave and the decree was not canceled.

Some time later, R’ Aharon came in a dream to one of those who prayed and said that the reason that the decree had not been canceled was not because he did not know about the decree. Even though he knew about the decree and could have had it changed, since he saw in the World of Truth that even a bad decree that comes from above is kindness and goodness, albeit not visibly so, since the good is from the ‘concealed world,’ when he saw the good within the bad he was no longer able to request that the decree be changed.

THE PATH TO JOY

The Chassid, Rabbi Menachem Teichtel, said that at hakafos on Simchas Torah, when he saw the Rebbe’s enormous joy he was reminded of his father who was killed in the Holocaust and he began to cry. He quickly recovered and began to rejoice.

After Yom Tov, when he had yechidus, the Rebbe said to him that he noticed that he cried during the hakafos and he should know that that is not the time for it. The Rebbe took out a Tanya from his drawer, gave it to him as a gift, and told him to become well-versed in chapters 26-34 that talk about joy.

SEGULA FOR MEMORY

One of the tmimim complained to the Rebbe when in yechidus that he immediately forgot

what he learned. The Rebbe said, “It says, ‘and do not stray after your hearts and your eyes … so that you remember.’ When a person is careful with ‘do not stray after your eyes,’ ‘that you remember’ is fulfilled – he does not forget what he learns. From the positive you understand the negative.”

INVISIBLE MOSCOW

The Rebbe Rashab once traveled with his son [later, the Rebbe Rayatz] to Moscow and his son said, “See what a huge building they built here.” His father said, “Yosef Yitzchok, believe me, it has been many years that I’ve been traveling to Moscow and other than the red belt of the wagon driver, I don’t see anything.”

THE SOUR FOOD WHICH BECAME SWEET

When the Alter Rebbe was in jail in Petersburg he did not eat anything, because of kashrus reasons. One minister, who appreciated the greatness of the Alter Rebbe, wanted to bring him kosher food. The Alter Rebbe asked him to bring him food called eingemachts - bitter radish cooked in honey. The Rebbe explained to the minister that since he hadn’t eaten in a long time, his intestines had shrunk and this food was good for expanding his intestines.

Chassidim explained that the deeper reason that he had chosen this dish was because after the arrest there developed a new manner of avodas Hashem that hadn’t existed previously. It’s like it is explained in Tanya that Hashem has two types of pleasure, one from sweet dishes and one from sharp or sour dishes that are sweetened which, in man’s avoda, is iskafia, a great avoda.

THE KOHEN GADOL OF TODAY

Based on Toras Menachem 5742 p. 1922

A big part of the Yom Kippur davening is the Seder Avoda - the story of the Kohen Gadol’s avoda in the Beis HaMikdash, on Yom Kippur.

QUESTION - The Yidden davening in shul are not the Kohen Gadol. Most Yidden aren’t even Kohanim. Why do we repeat this detailed story of the Kohen Gadol’s work which doesn’t seem relevant to us today?

Additionally, as part of the Seder Avoda, we repeat the special tefilla of the Kohen Gadol, and ask Hashem to accept our tefillos just like Hashem accepted the tefilla of the Kohen Gadol! How can we compare our tefillos in shul today, to the tefilla of the Kohen Gadol in the Beis HaMikdash?

ANSWER - In preparation for matan Torah Hashem told the Yidden, “You will be for Me a kingdom of Kohanim and a holy nation!” This means that every Yid, to a certain degree, is

considered to be a Kohen Gadol!

Therefore, it is both a privilege and an obligation for us to repeat the story of the avoda along with the tefilla that the Kohen Gadol made on Yom Kippur. In fact, Hashem considers our tefillos and fasting on Yom Kippur just like those of the Kohen Gadol!

LESSON - There is a saying, “The holiest person in the world is the Kohen Gadol; the holiest place is the Kodesh HaKodoshim; and the holiest time of the year is Yom Kippur.”

We learn from the Seder Avoda that every Yid can be on the level of the Kohen Gadol. This is true not just on Yom Kippur, but the entire year, and not just in the Kodesh HaKodoshim, but wherever he may be! By serving Hashem properly in our daily lives, and utilizing everything in our lives for the purpose of serving Hashem, we elevate ourselves to the level of the Kohen Gadol!

The Great Light Which Comes out of the Darkness

The Song of David is read as the haftarah twice during the year. Once with parshat Haazinu, because it is similar to Moses's song of Haazinu, and again on the seventh day of Passover, when we read Az Yashir, the song we sang at the splitting of the Sea of Reeds.

When we read Az Yashir during the year, the haftarah is from the Song of Deborah, because at the splitting of the sea, the women were more joyous than the men. While the men sang, the women sang with dances and tambourines. Therefore, we sing the song of a woman, the Song of Deborah.

The Song of David is recorded twice in the Bible, once in the book of Samuel, and again, with variations, in Psalms. For the haftarah, the one from Samuel is read.

King David sang this song in gratitude to G-d, who saved him from his enemies and from King Saul. It is written in the Bible twice, since there are many lessons to be learned from it with regards to our personal salvation from dark and difficult situations and challenges. I will just mention a few.

The haftarah tells us that G-d, “surrounded Himself with a canopy of darkness, from clouds of water, bound together…” This is said, not in a negative way, but rather, in a positive way. What is positive about G-d being in the darkness?

First, it is darkness that defines light. Second, darkness and difficulties bring out light in two ways. When a person is faced with a challenge, it brings out the will in him or her to overcome and break through the darkness. By overcoming the darkness, the light is greater than it would have been without the difficulty.

However, there is much more that can be achieved with this darkness. Sometimes, the

darkness is so great that it feels insurmountable. When this happens, the only strategy is to turn the darkness into light. This is accomplished by taking the difficulty and finding a way to use it for good. It makes you realize that the darkness was not darkness at all. In Chassidic parlance this is “the great light which comes out of the darkness.”

This message is found later in the haftarah as well. King David says, “You are my lamp, G-d, and G-d lights my darkness.” A lamp dispels darkness, yet the darkness still exists; it is just overcome by light. “G-d lights my darkness” is when the revelation of G-d is so great that the darkness ceases to exist.

How did King David achieve these great salvations? He says that G-d “makes my legs straight like a doe’s.” Rashi explains that a female deer’s legs are straighter than the male’s. What does a doe’s legs have to do with our haftarah?

A deer prances freely and can go far on its legs. This symbolizes that we are capable of doing a lot. Straight legs symbolize acceptance of G-d's will without question, just as legs do the bidding of the head, taking it from place to place, without question. He speaks of a female deer, because women, being closer to G-d, are more likely to do what He wants without question. (We see this regarding the sin of the Golden Calf, when the women refused to join in the sin.) King David is saying that because he had unquestioning faith, which women naturally have, he merited these great salvations. As the verse continues, “He stands me on high places.” This means, that when we act this way, G-d doesn't just save us. He puts us above any possibility of strife, challenges, darkness, difficulties, pain, suffering, etc.

Threemenapproachedtheriver.Oneof themenwasshort,whilehispartnerwas tallerwithonelegthickerthantheother. ThethirdmanwastheAlterRebbe.

Ontheriverlayaboard.Theshorterman instructedhistallercolleaguetostep ontoit,butashedid,hebegantosink. Then,suddenlytheboardliftedhigher andhigherabovethewater.Butthenthe waterroseagaincoveringthetallman. Thiscontinuedseveraltimesuntilthe shortermanfinallyinstructedhimtostep offtheboard.

Thethreemenwalkedaway,theirarms linkedtogether.Theycontinueduntilthey

cameuponanothergreatriver.The secondriverwasfilledwithcolorful,fast waves,whichsplashedthelandnearby. Littlepuddlesformedbutwerequickly swallowedupbythegroundandfruitbearingtreespoppedintheirplace.

Thesecondriveralsohadaboard.The shortermanpointedattheAlterRebbe thistimeandorderedhimtowalkalong theboard.TheAlterRebbewalkedstraight alongitwithnotrouble,allthewaytothe end.Theshortermanmotionedhimto returnandsaid:“Withthepowerofthese wavesonecanpassunharmedeven throughwavesoffire.”Afterhearingthese words,theMittelerRebbewokeup.

TheAlterRebbeexplainedhisson's dream.Thepersoninthemiddlewasthe BaalShemTovandthetallermanwasthe MaggidofMezritch,whosufferedpainin hisleg.

Slow Cooker Beef Stew

INGREDIENTS

2 small carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

1 large parsnip, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

1 turnip, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

1 cup peeled and cubed butternut squash

1 pound cubed beef chuck

1 (28-ounce) can whole, peeled tomatoes

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

½ teaspoon mustard powder

½ teaspoon ground cumin

Kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

PREPARATION

1. Mix together carrots, parsnips, turnips and butternut squash in the bottom of a slow cooker. Top with cubed beef and tomatoes.

2. In a small bowl, combine garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder and cumin and sprinkle over everything.

3. Cook on low for 6-8 hours.

4. Season to taste with salt and pepper before serving.
