Nitzavim and Rosh Hashanah: The Connection

This week's Torah portion, Nitzavim, is always read on the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah. There are so many things about this portion that connect to Rosh Hashanah. Nitzavim speaks of our commitment to G-d, His Torah and mitzvahs. It teaches about teshuvah (repentance) and foretells our return to G-d in this dark exile, how G-d will gather us from the farthest places.

Since the parshah speaks about teshuvah as the prelude to the in-gathering of the exiles, and being that we want it to happen already, let’s talk about teshuvah.

Teshuvah means return to G-d. On a basic level this means, to regret your past ways, ask for forgiveness and get back on G-d's path.

When a person has broken trust and wants to be trusted again, acting remorseful and saying "I'm sorry" is not enough. He needs to reach higher, find a greater level of character and prove himself worthy of forgiveness.

Yet, teshuvah can be so much more. Even the holiest of people can tap in to the power of teshuvah.

The verse says, "and you will return until the L-rd your G-d."

When you say return, it implies going back to a place or situation you were in before. What place are we speaking of here? This takes us to a whole new level of teshuvah, to a place where we are in perfect harmony with G-d.

Each of us has a neshamah, a piece of G-d inside of us. It is our essence. Over time we can become so involved in the physical, mundane world that our neshamah gets forgotten. Even mitzvahs can be done out of habit, void of meaning.

Teshuvah is connecting to your G-dly essence, your neshamah. It is a journey to your core. Every step you take inward, brings clarity. You see how you are one with G-d and that He loves you because you are part of Him. When you connect at this level, the more elementary forms of teshuvah follow automatically. How could you remain the same after connecting so deeply? Regret, remorse and bitterness over your previous state will overtake you, and you become closer to G-d.

Since our neshamah is infinite, there are always deeper/higher levels to connect to. Through teshuvah even a tzadik can find new levels of G-dliness with which to connect.

Your essence it already there, your neshamah has always been at the highest level. You now have to "return until G-d," return to where your neshamah is one with G-d. Since He is infinite, so is our journey, giving us the ability to get ever closer.

In preparation for Rosh Hashanah, let us take the initiative to get closer to G-d. May He, with his fatherly love, send Moshiach and gather the exiles and bring us home.

Since When Are You A Maven In Souls?

IF HE’S HAPPY, LEAVE HIM BE

When all of man’s avoda will be to extract his G-dly soul from the exile of the body through Torah and mitzvos, he will be very happy.

A Chassid once asked the Alter Rebbe whether to try to get his father to become a Chassid. The Alter Rebbe said that if his father had simcha shel mitzva, to leave him alone. ■

They LOVE Because I LovE

A French young man who became religious found it very hard to accept the esteem that Chassidim have toward the Rebbe. His friends suggested that he join them on a trip to the Rebbe for Tishrei and speak to the Rebbe about this.

When he had yechidus, his friends eagerly awaited hearing what the Rebbe would say to him.

When he left the Rebbe’s office he was smiling from ear to ear. He told them that he had asked the Rebbe why his Chassidim esteemed and loved him so much. The Rebbe smiled and said, “I love every Jew with an overflowing and boundless love [debordant in French] and they simply reciprocate it.”

SINCE WHEN ARE YOU A MAVEN IN SOULS?

R’ Chatshe Feigin once said to the Rebbe Rayatz, “Rebbe, the yeshivos are fighting for their financial existence and the talmidim have nothing to eat. Why are we buying sweets

and prizes for children who are not religious for them to say brachos when we could use that money to buy additional slices of bread for yeshiva students?”

The Rebbe burst into tears and then so did R’ Chatshe. After a few minutes, the Rebbe said in tears, “Chatshe, Chatshe, since when are you a maven in neshamos?”

WHERE IS THE JUSTICE?

Among Chassidim in Montreal was someone by the name of R’ Dovid Tenenhaus whom the Rebbe was greatly mekarev. This man had lengthy private audiences with the Rebbe.

Once, while in yechidus, R’ Dovid asked the Rebbe, “How is it possible that R’ Peretz Mochkin goes about with a torn coat and his financial situation is so dire that when he has yechidus he needs to borrow an intact coat from another Chassid, while a certain famous, vacuous actress in Hollywood earns five million dollars a year? It says, ‘The silver is Mine, the gold is Mine,’ and so where is the justice? How does Hashem allow this?”

The Rebbe answered, “As for R’ Peretz, he’s not ‘into this’ and it’s doubtful whether he even knows that his coat is torn. Even if he knows, he doesn’t care and he always lives with real joy. That actress, with all her money, doesn’t have a happy life and she is greatly depressed.

“You will yet see this openly.”

A few months later, the actress died of a drug overdose.

BETWEEN SHOFAR AND SHABBOS

One of the main mitzvos of Rosh Hashana is to hear the shofar. When Rosh Hashana falls out on Shabbos, our Chachomim ruled that we do not blow the shofar. The Chachomim were concerned that perhaps someone who wouldn’t know how to blow the shofar will chas veshalom, carry it outside on Shabbos in order to ask the Rav how to blow the shofar. The Chachomim, therefore, established that the shofar should not be sounded when Rosh Hashana falls out on Shabbos.

QUESTION - The mitzva of blowing shofar brings down great brachos for the coming year. Why did the Chachomim take away this special mitzva, which brings abundant brachos,

when Rosh Hashana falls out on Shabbos?

ANSWER - Shabbos is called “Shabbos Kodesh – The Holy Shabbos,” since on each Shabbos there is a special kedusha that enters the world. The level of kedusha that Shabbos brings to this world is so great, that it achieves the same level of kedusha that blowing shofar achieves! The Chachomim therefore decreed not to blow the shofar on Shabbos (out of concern that people might carry on Shabbos) since they were not taking anything away. The brachos for the new year are coming down either way, in the merit of Shabbos!

Once there was a yid who, sadly, did many aveiros. One day, Hashem helped him think of a new idea.

The Yid thought to himself: “I’m not proud of the way I live. I truly hope Hashem will forgive. It’s time to do teshuva for real, No more will I cheat or steal.

The man went to a talmid chacham and asked him: “All my life I never did, Even one mitzvah like a proper yid. Teshuva seems too hard to do, Please make it easy to start anew.”

The talmid chacham replied: “Just one mitzvah, that’s all it will take, Just keep one mitzvah with no mistake. Just one mitzvah done perfectly, That one mitzvah will be the key.”

The man got so excited. He had to keep just one mitzvah perfectly in order to do

teshuva! That sounded doable. He turned to the talmid chacham and asked: “Oh tell me, oh tell me, please if you will. Which one mitzvah should I fulfill?

The talmid chacham stroked his beard and answered: “Whatever the question, your answer should be, The entire truth. You must speak honestly.“

Just say the truth?! The yid was surprised. That doesn’t seem too hard. Liking this method of teshuvah he agreed to keep the mitzvah.

One day the man waswalking in the street:

“I see a purse, right there, out in the open. Icantakeitwithoutcausingacommotion. Wait a minute! What will happen if someone stops to ask a question? “What are you carrying?” they will want to know.

Through this one mitzvah of saying the truth, the man began staying away from bad things and keeping every single mitzvah in the Torah.

Apple And Parsnip Soup

INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 large shallots, peeled and sliced

1 pound parsnips, peeld and cut into 1/2-inch pieces

4 granny smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1-inch pieces, plus more for garnish if desired

1/2 teaspoon curry powder

1 1/2 teaspoons ground coriander

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

5 cups chicken flavored broth

Kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

PREPARATION

1. Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add shallots and sauté 2 minutes.

2. Add parsnips and sauté 3 minutes more. Add apples and stir 1 minute. Add curry powder, coriander and garlic powder, stir to coat. Add chicken stock and bring to a boil.

3. Reduce heat and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Let cool.

4. Puree soup with an immersion blender or working in batches in a blender or food processor until smooth, thinning with more broth if desired.

5. Return soup to clean pot and bring to a simmer. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

To serve divide between bowls and garnish with olive oil and sliced apple if desired.
