Looking Forward to 2024 As we bid farewell to 2023, I’d like to wish all Coronado residents and guests a very Happy New Year! The 2024 year presents the city with many opportunities to make significant progress on projects and initiatives that are important to each segment of our community from parks to infrastructure, to public facilities and the crossborder sewage issue. In early December of 2023, the City Council gave direction to move forward with a Cays Park Master Plan option that allows for organized sports to continue while increasing passive use opportunity for others. Once a refined design receives public feedback, the City Council is likely to finalize the Master Plan in 2024 and I have no doubt it will result in improvements that benefit the community for generations to come. The City Council continues to make significant investment in our infrastructure. Some of these investments are visible, such as road improvements. Others, like the Parker Pump station, are underground and out of sight but critical to fulfilling the city’s primary responsibilities. In 2024, the City Council will give more consideration to infrastructure options that could provide recycled water to safeguard our beautiful parks, medians and golf course from future droughts. Improvements to the Coronado Library Winn are long overdue. With the leadership of Councilmembers Carrie Downey and Casey Tanaka, who currently comprise the Winn Room subcommittee, I fully expect more public outreach and feedback which will likely culminate in an approved concept in 2024. Councilmembers Mike Donovan and Carrie Downey helped bring forward a Historic Context 10

Survey in 2023 that will serve as the foundation in 2024 for improving the historic designation process by providing clarity to homeowners and protecting our community’s truly historic resources. Progress that started back in 2017 continues to be made on the cross-border sewage issue. In 2023, Mexico began to fix a dilapidated watertreatment plant and the US IBWC issued a solicitation for bids on rehabilitation and expansion of our international treatment plant. Those bids are due in early 2024. Through the work of the crossborder subcommittee led by Councilmember John Duncan and myself, I am confident we will help secure additional funding in 2024 that will result in a significant groundbreaking by 2025. I also expect to see improvements along Orange Avenue from the 100 block all the way to the Shores. The council will be considering enhancements to our downtown business district which may include new street furniture and landscaping changes to make Orange Avenue more enjoyable for all. The Shores should finally see an improved entryway with a beautification of their median in 2024. I know all of the Councilmembers are honored to represent the City of Coronado and look forward to working on your behalf to continue tackling all of these projects, and many others, to make you proud to call Coronado home. Volunteering in the community, whether it’s in Coronado or just over the bridge, is an amazing way to share joy and pay it forward. Whether you want to foster homeless pets, help unhoused humans, take steps to protect the environment or simply infuse hope into the world, there are endless opportunities to lend a helping hand.

Help Furry Friends at PAWS

PAWS of Coronado needs your help – it’s often bursting at the seams with pets who need safe and loving homes. While the facilities are designed to hold nine dogs and 12 cats, an influx of unwanted pets being left in Coronado has created an overflow of animals. There are currently more than 23 dogs at the PAWS Animal Care Facility and eleven in foster care. When it comes to cats, there are ten living at PAWS and three in foster care. While PAWS is doing its best to care for these animals – even adding a trailer in the parking lot to create more animal housing – they need help from local residents, according to Jennifer Stein, PAWS Senior Manager of Fund Development. PAWS is looking for longterm and short-term fostering and adoptions, and is also seeking volunteers 13-years-old and older to walk dogs, work with cats and greet facility guests. (Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.) Other ways to help include donating items from the PAWS wish list available on their website, organizing donation drives and online fundraisers, and other ways to raise money like bake sales and car washes. PAWS always needs help sharing social media posts to encourage adoption and sharing information about events and adoption success stories. Finally, residents can create handmade objects like blankets, toys and bandanas, and create drawings and art to create a welcoming environment at the facility. Create a Safe Harbor in Coronado for Local Youth and Families

Safe Harbor has helped thousands of youth and families in the community to prevent and overcome challenges such as problems with self-esteem, bullying, divorce, poor social connection, drug use, suicide, grief and loss, mental illness and more. But it takes a village to make it happen! The nonprofit, Safe Harbor, which has been around since 1998, is always looking for volunteers to help them in their mission to provide comprehensive programs and counseling to empower Coronado youth, their families and the community. In addition to lowcost counseling, Safe Harbor provides parenting and community workshops, youth programs, drug prevention, community education such as the Aloha Club (which welcomes new families to town), coffee talks and workshops. Safe Harbor has a volunteer page on its website which lists areas of need including welcoming new families in the Aloha Club, providing office support, event planning, fundraising, program support, promotion, marketing and fundraising. Make Some Waves at Emerald Keepers

Emerald Keepers is looking for volunteers to help keep Coronado emerald green and ocean blue. It’s the only civic non-profit organization in the City of Coronado whose sole purpose is to address local needs related to environmental stewardship and sustainability. With increasing levels of trash and pollution threatening our oceans and air, Emerald Keepers provides community-based programs and educational outreach to encourage community involvement. In addition to signing petitions and assisting with local initiatives, Emerald Keepers is looking for volunteers to help with beach cleanups, events, hospitality or volunteer who work as civic scientists or help with civic engagement. Internship opportunities are available for Coronado High School Students and clubs at the middle and high school levels to care for school gardens and composting. Goals for 2024 include banning single-use plastics in Coronado, as it is the only beach community from Imperial Beach to Oceanside without this ban. Everyone is encouraged to sign the petition on the Emerald Keepers website, sign up for the email newsletter and follow Emerald Keepers on social media.

Help Unhoused San Diegans with Think Dignity

Think Dignity’s mission is simple: To advance basic dignity for people experiencing homelessness through advocacy and innovation. The nonprofit accomplishes this through programs such as its Transitional Storage Center, which provides 400 lockers and bins, giving the homeless a safe way to store their belongings while they attend job interviews, medical appointments and classes. The Fresh Start Showers is a two-shower mobile trailer that provides safe shower facilities while the Street Café provides nutritious meal options to those experiencing homelessness. Finally, legal clinics provide safe and confidential access to justice by empowering homeless individuals to address legal issues with the support of Think Dignity’s attorneys, and the organization’s youth advocacy project addresses criminal defense issues that challenge homeless youth. Think Dignity is looking for volunteers to assist with Fresh Start Showers and the Transitional Storage Center, help run the Street Café, hand out clothing items at distribution centers, and provide legal support and services. Give Homeless School Children a Bright Future with the Monarch School

Located in downtown San Diego and operating since 1987, the Monarch School educates about 300 unhoused students. The unique and innovative K-12 environment gives students the stability and security they need to heal and learn. Students enjoy benefits like increased school attendance, improved academic performance, better emotional wellness and the opportunity to graduate with a high school diploma. Volunteers are an important part of what makes Monarch successful, and the organization is always looking for people to help. The on-campus volunteers work a regular weekly volunteer shift Monday through Friday, between 8:00am - 4:00pm. Areas of need include math and literacy tutoring, classroom support, administrative support and personal shopping. APPY NEW YEAR and welcome to 2024. Time for a fresh start, and, for many, time for those New Year resolutions. We hear from so many friends that it is time to lose weight, give up smoking, skip happy hour…on goes the list. There are so many other positive things we could look forward to this year. What about taking

care of your health, staying close to family, volunteering in the community? It's time to feel good about what you do and how you live. We all know you are happy to tell friends over the bridge and beyond about how happy you are to live in this tiny bit of paradise– Coronado. Have you ever thought about how lucky we all are that they stopped hunting rabbits here back in the 1880s? That was when Babcock and Story got involved in developing the island. Yes, the Hotel del Coronado started it all. There were many others

we can thank for helping to bring us to the city we have today. This is but a brief history lesson and fact-finding about our past. We can thank John D. Spreckels for all he gave to both Coronado and San Diego. We know his home here later became the Glorietta Bay Inn, long after the family ceased to dwell there. He later built the beach house on Ocean Boulevard, still overlooking the ocean today. Then, down the street but two houses away, Bartlett Richards arrived with his Midwest cattle money and built his brick mansion. A few years later, Walter Dupee enlarged the home to twice its size and added quarters for the Polo team he brought to Coronado. We soon had our own Polo fields and teams from around the world who played here as well. Over the years so many people with vision have come here to move us forward. Think of names such as the Parker Family or the Jessop Family. They developed land and business here and in San Diego. Long after Orange Avenue became the well-established hub of business in Coronado, moving into the last half of the 20th century, we saw such people as the Kippermans with Kippys, his sister M. J. Brown with her shop on the corner of 10th. There was also Ben Cohen, who owned and operated the Coronado Department Store for so many years. Remember that before the bridge people did shop locally because we had it all. Did you ever hear of Bay and Bridge magazine? That was owned by Virginia Bridge, another very active woman in our community. She believed in Coronado and did not mind voicing her opinion when needed. We have moved forward from the small police department once seen on Orange Avenue to the now total police center we see today. We have a library that has been expanded several times and our community center at 7th & Orange, which was largely funded by a donation from Fran Harpst, a quiet woman who chose to work behind the scenes. She was also responsible for our Meals on Wheels program, where she volunteered as well.

Over time we, as the island of Coronado, have become more well known for all the presidents who visited the Hotel del Coronado, movies made here in the last 50 years, and summer concerts in the park, free to all. And yes, that beautiful bandstand you see in the park was made possible by the efforts of Mary King. She fought long and hard to see that it got built. We look forward to the happenings of the new year and take the time to thank those who have gone before us and made our lives here on the island what it is today. • Carol Pastor and her family have lived in Coronado since the mid-1970s. Mother of seven girls, many of whom still live here in the village, Carol has been involved in the community over the years with the Friends of the Library, Historic Resource Commission, and most recently writing about Coronado history for the Coronado Historical Association. An avid history buff since her college days, exploring our local history is a perfect fit.

A New Year in the Kitchen

Teaching My Daughters to Cook Story & Photos by Clyde Van Arsdall IV

o your kids love fast food? For most parents, it hurts when their kids prefer takeout, frozen foods or canned items over a home-cooked meal. For a chef, a choice of nonhome-cooked meals is like nails on a chalkboard! I have put up with Kraft Macaroni and Cheese for years. Kids are stereotyped to be picky eaters, and in my experience girls can be the worst when it comes to what they will and won’t eat. I have an unbelievably good recipe for Mac and Cheese that I borrowed from Martha Stewart years ago. I have since tweaked it

and made it my own, which makes it even better. This recipe is so good but has sat in the wings for years. Why? My daughter prefers the one in the box. When I’ve hosted dinner parties in the past, I used to make this to-die-for cheesy casserole for the kids but I would catch the adults digging into it because it looked and smelled so darn good. I learned to serve the kids in the kitchen, separate from the adults, so it wouldn't get swiped. This recipe is an adult Mac and Cheese, but the kids loved it. Martha uses Gruyère and a touch of Cayenne, which I left out when I made it for kids. If my daughter senses a slight hint of heat, you will hear her fork immediately drop. So the question comes up: Why will the kids eat this at a party but not as their everyday choice? Trying to figure out children's food likes and dislikes is an exercise in futility. And so,, I have ripped open more branded blue boxes, for all three of my children have loved it. My oldest child, Charlie, is off at college and has become quite the cook. He regularly calls for recipes and hosts large dinner parties at his house. His traditional American feast for Canadian Thanksgiving in October has become a tradition amongst his friends. My middle child, Josie, can hold her own in the kitchen and has an ever-expanding palate. It is my youngest, 12-year-old Sasha, who is the holdout. This past year, though, I have seen some changes in Sasha. First, it was Birria tacos – she loves dipping them in the consommé. And also, she shows her love of noodles through Ramen and Pho. These are the Daddy-Daughter moments I cherish the most. And so, outings for tacos and noodles have become our thing. Recently, a big break came when she said, “Dad, remember that mac and cheese you make for parties, the one with the crunchies on top? Can you make that for dinner tonight?” My answer was a resounding, “No!” followed quickly with, “I can't make that for you, but we can make it together. Let's dust off that cute apron I bought you.” Then off we went to the store. My mother, Sybil, used to ask my brother and me what we wanted for dinner and once we responded she would say, “If that's what you want, you have to make it with me.” If we decided we didn't want to cook with her, she would say, “Ok, then I am making what I want for dinner.” When I asked why she had this policy, she replied, “Every young man should be able to cook for himself and someone he loves.” Then

she would make a snide comment, “God knows these days you're not going to find a girl that can cook, so if you like it, learn it.” Mom was a pistol. My fondest memories of Mom are cooking and drinking with her in the kitchen. The smells became seared into my soul, and the conversations filled with worldly advice have helped shape me into the man I am today. I want this for my children. Sasha has completed her first Mac and Cheese, with me doing most of the heavy lifting. When teaching your kids to cook, preparation is everything. They will lose interest fast if it feels too much like work. Get everything measured out, get the water boiling and have the necessary equipment around you; all that's left is the fun part of assembly and cooking. Mac and Cheese is a great first dish to teach your kids. It has them learning to prepare pasta. The recipe calls for some sauteing with the bread crumbs. It teaches them how to make a roux, a béchamel and a mornay sauce — all classic French techniques. Then it has them using the oven, and also no knife work with fear of cutting themselves. Next time, I will have her measure and prep everything while I coach. The third time, I will let her follow the recipe on her own, check her work and let her go. The third time is a charm; they then own the recipe — theirs for life — and all the memories of learning it with you. Sasha and I share a love of a good steak and mashed potatoes. She learned how to make mashed potatoes last Thanksgiving, so the next challenge is teaching her how to choose a good steak at the shop and cook it properly in an iron skillet. When she leaves for college someday I will give her the iron skillet we used together. I did this with my oldest son Charlie, and it is the most used thing in his kitchen. I hope you try my version of Martha’s Mac and Cheese. It is excellent, but if you want to elevate this dish, I love working in some fried prosciutto, or when I was the chef at Neiman Marcus, I would make individual portions laced with lobster. Dad’s Penne and Cheese

Serves 12 Ingredients: 9 Tablespoons butter unsalted (3 for bread crumbs, 6 for béchamel) 1 ½ cups of panko bread crumbs (Martha makes her own) 5 ½ cups of whole milk ½ cup of all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons kosher salt ¼ teaspoons of grated nutmeg (this makes it, in my opinion) ¼ teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (if making for children, skip this) 4 ½ cups (18oz.) of grated sharp white cheddar. 2 cups (8 oz.) of mozzarella (Martha uses Gruyère) 1 ¼ cups of grated Pecorino Romano cheese. A portion of mac and cheese straight from the 1 pound of penne pasta (Martha uses elbow macaroni) casserole dish. It won't hold its shape if you

don't portion the mac and cheese when cold. Directions: • Heat oven to 375 degrees. • Boil the Penne in salted water. Cook until al dente, as the pasta will cook further when baked. If the instructions on the box say 11 min, pull the pasta at 9. I like to run it under cold water to stop the cooking. • Saute the panko bread crumbs in three tablespoons of melted butter until golden brown. Set aside as this is the crunchy topping. • Heat the milk until warm to the touch. I like to do this in the microwave in a Pyrex cup. I usually cook it for 6 min on high. You can also heat in a pan. • Melt six tablespoons of butter in a high-sided pan. I often use the pot I boiled the pasta in. Once the butter starts to bubble, add the flour and start whisking. You are making a blonde roux. Cook this for a minute or two while whisking. • Add the warm milk while whisking and working through the lumps. You want this to be smooth. Keep whisking until it starts to bubble and thicken. You know it's done when it reaches a nape state. Take a metal spoon and coat the back of it with the sauce. Run your finger across the back of the spoon if the line you make stays and the sauce doesn't cover it up. • Take off the heat and whisk in the nutmeg, salt, pepper, and cayenne. • Add all the cheese except for the Romano. This cheese is for the top of the casserole. Stir in the cheese until completely melted. • Add the pasta and stir to cover the pasta in the sauce. I use a rubber spatula to coat the penne with the cheese sauce. • Pour into a buttered casserole dish or individual dishes.

Try Adding Lobster or Prosciutto

• If adding fried prosciutto or lobster, go big or go home. You want to be able to taste it. You need a lot of lobster or prosciutto to taste it through the cheese sauce. • I often just stir the fried prosciutto or even bacon into the pot before I put it into the casserole dish. • If going the lobster route, boil the lobster, then sauté in butter. I portion the lobster into each cup and then incorporate the mac and cheese. I save some nice chunks and garnish each portion. The use of lobster is rich and decadent, one of my favorites. I would also go with Martha’s use of Gruyere in this version. CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM

will never forget the day my husband, Jason, and I were walking down Orange Avenue with our two young kids, and a woman stopped us to give us a compliment. We were just four

days into living in Coronado — our home still in boxes and our mannerisms still steeped in our former life in downtown San Diego. And while we absolutely loved living and raising our small family downtown, it was quite a culture shock coming to Coronado, where people stopped you on the street to say hi or (gasp!) give you a compliment. Now, four years since then, and I actually don’t exactly recall what the woman said to welcome us to town, but I will always remember how it made me feel. I felt then, like I still do now, that Coronado is the best small town on earth, and filled with good vibes. For anyone who has the privilege to visit or live here in Coronado, they will likely agree.

Coronado is awesome. The beach. The Del. The shops on Orange. The downtown skyline reminding you that while you might be on an island, you aren’t too far from the hustle and bustle of big city life. The military history. The families who have been here before there was a bridge! And those who just migrated over the bridge in search of a change. As I think more about what makes this place so magical I realize, yes, it is all those things above, but it is also the Coronado-specific traditions that have survived through the years. Take the Rotary Santa Claus as an example. For 94 years now, the Coronado Rotary has been bringing the magic of Christmas to local children year after year. Also, consider the beloved Coronado Flower Association’s annual Coronado Flower Show, which in 2024 will be in its 102nd year.

How it is possible that all these traditions continue? It’s simple — because people say yes. And while I can’t speak to other events around town, I know this is true with the Coronado Flower Show because this is my second year involved as a board member. Do you know how many yeses it takes to throw a show that size? A LOT. It is a yes from people who offer to volunteer. It’s a yes from the local business owners who I’ve worked with personally like Frida Kalach from Host and Roast, Root 75, Kara’s Flowers, Penny Rothschild from Emerald C Gallery, Laura from AR Workshop, Marco from Garage Buona

Forchetta and Coach Dan Boyle of Roundhouse Fitness. The yes means, “I will help you because I care about this town.” And it extends far beyond just the people I know. Did you know that In 2022, more than 2,000 volunteers donated over 85,000 hours to local nonprofit organizations? Cultural Arts Commissioner Chair, Deb Kaller, agrees that the volunteer activity level is “a key contributor to the fabric that brings our community together and makes it a great place to live.” So you can see how the spirit of Coronado is an optimistic, willing and helpful yes!. Yes to tradition. Yes to change. It is filled with yeses. Yes to keeping the magic alive. s we bid farewell to the old year and usher in the new, there's no better time to refresh our surroundings and embrace a clean slate. The key to a

successful new beginning often starts at home, and what better way to kick off the year than by organizing and decluttering your living space? Here are some of our tips for getting organized for the rest of an amazing year! 1. Check stock and refill cleaning supplies. We love to do a sweep of the house and check stock on the essentials. Toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap, hand soap, laundry detergent and every day cleaning supplies. Our absolute favorite cleaning product line is Murchinson Hume and can be purchased in the B56 Shop. 2. Clean out that junk drawer! Junk drawers have a way of accumulating all sorts of odds and ends. This new year, resolve to conquer the chaos within these drawers. Start by emptying the contents and sorting them into categories. Discard items that are no longer useful and find proper homes for the rest. Invest in drawer organizers to maintain order and make it easier to find what you need in the future. You'll be amazed at how this small act of organization can have a significant impact on your daily life.

3. Go through clothing and other items to make a donation pile. The first step to a fresh start is to declutter your living space. Begin with your closets. If you haven’t worn an item in over a year it is probably time to let it go. Create designated piles for items to keep, donate, or discard. The act of decluttering not only creates physical space but also contributes to a sense of mental clarity. Don't forget to clean and dust the shelves and organizers as you go, leaving no corner untouched.

The Library’s Online Resources Story and Photos by Ivy Weston

rrrr, January is cold! But guess what? You can enjoy the library without leaving your warm and cozy home. Do you know that the library has loads of premium content online waiting for you? You can watch a movie, stream a video, check out an e-book or e-audiobook, research your family history, take a course, become more savvy about investing, learn a language and so much more. Here are some of the many sources of premium online content that is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week — all for free with your library card.

Book Club! Check out the Library’s book club lineup for January:

Many library patrons are already familiar with the library’s premium online resources that offer streaming movies and TV shows. The platform, Kanopy, has more than 30,000 films including award-winning documentaries, rare titles, BBC titles, film festival favorites, classic films, indie and world cinema with collections from Paramount, Criterion, The Great Courses, PBS and many independent filmmakers. A newer product, Biblio+, is a streaming service that partners with libraries to provide communities with unlimited access to an exciting, ad-free catalog of groundbreaking films and captivating television that can be viewed on most devices. Coming soon will be a new addition to Kanopy and Biblio+ called The Shelf which has premium streaming TV and film entertainment in both Spanish and English.

Mystery Book Club. Meets Monday, January 22, at 2:00pm in the Winn Room to discuss Anatomy of a Murder by Robert Traver. This club meets regularly on the third Monday of each month. Spoilers Book Club. Meets Saturday, January 27, at 2:00pm in the Winn Room to view the film Wonder. Spoilers Book Club participants read the book on their own (in this case, Wonder by R. J. Palacio) and then gather to view the movie version at their meeting. Members then compare and contrast the book and film in an after-film discussion. The following month’s book is announced at the meeting. Spoilers meets on the third Saturday of each month in the Winn Room. Best of the Best Book Club. Meets Tuesday, January 23, at 11:00am in the Winn Room to discuss Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. The Best of the Best meets regularly on the fourth Tuesday of each month to discuss books that have won major awards. Piranesi won the 2021 Women’s Prize for Fiction. The library has extra copies of book club selections for checkout at the Reference Desk. In terms of e-books and e-audiobooks, the platform Libby is an extremely popular resource. Not only does it have eBooks from Coronado Public Library but you can also access eBooks from any other libraries with which you have a library card as long as they subscribe to e-books and e-audiobooks from Overdrive. A lot of people purchase e-books and e-audiobooks from Amazon — but check Libby first since you may be amazed at the selection of free e-books for Kindle e-readers, Kindle Fire, iPad/Apple computers, Windows computers and tablets. From there, all that’s needed is the Amazon app to read from your device (unless you have an Amazon e-reader like a Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Fire tablet). In addition to Libby, there is CloudLibrary which offers thousands more e-books and e-audiobooks than Libby. The difference is that CloudLibrary books come in ePub format only, meaning they will work on tablets and computers but not e-readers. Translation: they will work on your Kindle Fire because it’s a tablet (think handheld computer), but not on your Kindle Paperwhite or similar because that’s an e-reader that runs on Amazon’s proprietary technology. If magazines are more your thing, or you need a brain break between those thick literary tomes, try Flipster! It has top magazines such as Time, People, Sports Illustrated, Money, Prevention, The New Yorker and many more which can be “flipped through” (hence the name) on smartphones, tablets and computers. If you’re traveling in the new year, do what library staff do — download the Libby, Kindle, and Flipster apps to

your phone and devices, then download e-books/eaudiobooks from Libby and magazines from Flipster to your phone, iPad or other device, and leave the heavy physical books at home, ! Although you might want to bring a light paperback or two in case Wi-Fi is spotty where you’re going) Some apps will even let you download content ahead of time to view/read later, which is a must if you are heading somewhere with no Wi-Fi. The Library also offers access to the electronic editions of The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times to anyone with a Coronado Public Library card. Additionally, the library has a premium electronic resource for pretty much every interest or hobby. History buffs will love a platform called Digital Public Library of America, an all-digital online library that compiles information from millions of photographs, manuscripts, books, sounds, images and more from libraries, archives and museums in the United States. There are Sumerian stone tablets, the Magna Carta, the U.S. Constitution, the moon landing and much more to discover or discover more. It is worth visiting just to look at the online exhibitions! This resource, unlike some of the others, does not require a library card to access. Other premium electronic resources offered by the library include: BUSINESS AND EMPLOYMENT EXPLORATION: • AtoZ: A business-research tool that includes phone numbers, business profiles, job searching, mailing lists, and people directories.

• Mergent Intellect: Company, residential, industry and demographic research data, which includes company annual reports and job searching. • LearningExpress Job and Career Accelerator: An easy-to-use search tool with everything that patrons and students need to find, apply for and get hired into ideal positions. It delivers award-winning information about careers, skills and interest assessments to match individuals with ideal career paths. INVESTING AND FINANCE: • Morningstar Investment Research Center: Access mutual fund and stock information. • Value Line: Whether you're a beginning investor or a veteran finance specialist looking for highimpact ideas, Value Line can position you for financial success quickly and easily. LIFELONG LEARNING FOR OLDER ADULTS: • Get Setup: The largest digital community for older adults to learn, share and socialize. Older adults have incredible knowledge to share and new mountains (literally and figuratively) to climb, but until now they haven't had their own place to pursue their passions and continue creating, growing and giving back. ONLINE COURSES: • Gale Courses: A wide range of free, interactive, instructor-led courses is provided entirely online. Courses run for six weeks and new sessions begin every month. Subjects over business, computer skills, desktop publishing, healthcare, law, math and science, personal finance, writing and more. LANGUAGE LEARNING: • Mango Languages: Fun, interactive lessons for learning a variety of languages, aimed at all ages. There’s even a unit on how to speak like a pirate! • Genealogy/Family History: The Library has Ancestry but be aware that it is for in-library use only.

• HeritageHub: Explore your family history with the premier collection of U.S. obituaries and death notices for in-depth genealogical research from 1704 – today. HeritageHub helps you easily identify relatives and uncover new information and potentially unknown family members. Includes deep coverage from all 50 states, hard-to-find content from the mid-1900s and original obituary images. • My Heritage Library Edition: More than five billion historical records including U.S. and UK census, family tree profiles from MyHeritage and Geni, historical and tombstone photos, military and immigration records, passenger lists, citizenship and naturalization records, directories and biographies, and land, court, wills and probate records. This is not a complete list – there are so many more online library resources! Most of the premium online resources require a library card to access, and some resource use require that patrons set up their own accounts within the individual online resource. However coming soon the Library will offer EZ Proxy, which enables patrons to log in once and then browse all of the premium online services during a single session! he Crown City Magazine team is still both star-struck and in awe after experiencing the 2023 Coronado Island Film Festival (CIFF). Celebrating its eighth year of outstanding programming, the festival included independent and studio films, panels, special engagements, tributes and awards curated and led by CEO & Artistic Director, Merridee Book and her programming team. The reputation of CIFF has grown over the past eight years due to the caliber of industry and studio relationships, connected professionals, generous benefactors and a strong professional volunteer corp. The Film Festival rolls out the red carpet along with the greater community of Coronado, the City, arts partners and other organizations who work behind the scenes coordinating logistics to ensure the festival runs smoothly and safely for all involved.

This year was particularly unique. Despite navigating the two strikes — 2023 Writers Guild of America strike and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike — the show did go on, with carefully curated selections, and understanding that actors may have limited attendance or participation. Several featured films are receiving Oscar buzz and international acclaim including Fallen Leaves, May December, The Taste of Things, Shayda, Past Lives, Robot Dreams and Common Ground. This year we saw the return of amazing panels that engaged the attendees and foster great conversations. One panel moderated by Terry Curtin called, Embracing Change — The Future of Entertainment, brought together industry experts at all levels of their craft, for a dynamic discussion about the state of the entertainment industry; from shifts in audience viewing habits, emerging technologies, representation and sustainable

productions, to making room for the next generation of filmmakers. The pinnacle of the festival was the extremely touching Leonard Maltin Industry Tribute Awards Gala that included Diane Ladd, Paul Raci, Carol Guzy, Andreas Deja and Heba Thorisdottir. From the conversations and heartfelt speeches on-stage, to the glamorous gorgeous red carpet camera shoot capturing gorgeous attire and the joyful smiles, this evening bestowed a magical essence in the setting of the sunset and evening lights of our beautiful and classic Loews Coronado Bay Resort. The Coronado Island Film Festival was also the only festival outside of AFI to premiere Maxine's Baby, an Amazon Studio documentary on the personal backstory about the childhood biography and later rise to fame and success of Tyler Perry. Another popular film during the festival was Humanity Stoked, a documentary directed by Michael Ien Cohen featuring Pro Skateboarders Tony Alva,

Lizzie Armanto, and San Diegan Tony Hawk, among others. The film explores the beauty in overcoming fear and other challenges facing humanity as seen by icons of pro skating, science, art, music, activism and education. The festival has become known for its hospitality, immersive experiences, enhanced food and drink experiences, and a strong and impressive film-industry attendance providing a high level of networking among filmmakers, producers, directors and screenwriters. This year resulted with many films nearly selling out or sold out, and also strong ticket and badge sales. Independent films showcased brought audiences compelling documentaries and strong narrative features that related with and challenged audiences, bringing perspective, understanding, and inspiration and joy to the big screen. The Jury Awards honored the top independent films selected by six esteemed jury teams that included Academy, BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe nominees and winners, writers, producers, film critics and instructors.
