Giving Thanks

H

ow is it possible that we are already in the month of November? As we head into holiday season, the flurry of activities that fill the last months of the year kick into high gear.

November also means celebrating our military veterans. Sandwiched between a naval air station and an amphibious base, Coronado has been home to military personnel for over 100 years. It’s a part of our collective identity and is so much a part of what makes our little city unique.

In our November issue, we share stories of the season. Coronado Island Film Festival is back in its fourth year, bringing Hollywood to our doorstep with movie debuts and celebrity celebrations. Christian Esquevin tells us about Coronado residents through the years who are also Hollywood celebrities. And Island Girl gives us a great lineup of buffets for a memorable Thanksgiving feast.

The term “it takes a village” couldn’t be more appropriate for our story about Monarch School and the role Coronado families play in helping provide a Thanksgiving dinner for families who likely wouldn’t have one.

United Through Reading supports our active duty military families by keeping connections strong with prerecorded storytelling, and Coronado photographer Bill Sandke creates lasting memories as a volunteer for HeartsApart.org This is the month of Thanksgiving, but yearround I hear people say how lucky, grateful and thankful they are to be in Coronado. Judging by the number of civic organizations in town, giving back is a priority. A lot of people are generous with their time and work hard for the betterment of our little city. That commitment is what makes us a community. I’m very thankful for that.

Many moviemakers have called Coronado home

Charlie Chaplin The Country Club area of Coronado was once a fairground and polo field, and everything from auto races to rodeos as well as polo matches were held there. Some celebrities joined the polo teams including Charlie Chaplin, the best-known movie star of his era.

Chaplin would come down to Coronado to play polo, and at one time rented a house at 605 10th St. where he stayed with his wife.

oronado has been a popular locale for filmmaking since the beginning of moving pictures. The combination of sea, spectacular views and the lure of the Hotel del Coronado has always been compelling. The list of films with scenes shot in Coronado is long and well documented, and include stars such as Mary Pickford, Rudolph Valentino, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne and Tom Cruise.

What is sometimes overlooked is that many Hollywood stars have also called Coronado their hometown.

The list of celebrity residents dates back to the early 1900s.

Charlie Chaplin

Johnny Downs One movie star that could have been called “Mr. Coronado” was Johnny Downs. Downs started in movies at age 10 as Johnny in the Our Gang comedies, appearing regularly from 1923 until 1927 when he became too big for the part.

He performed in Vaudeville honing his singing and dancing until returning to Hollywood where he appeared in many films including Coronado, set at the Hotel del Coronado. After appearing in 100 movies and performing shows across the country, Downs settled in Coronado. Ever the entertainer, he started a show for children, The Johnny Downs Show, on Channel 10 (“Howdy, howdy howdy guys and gals.”). The show lasted 17 years and he became the most popular Fourth of July Parade participant for the kids. After the show ended, he sold real estate for Strand-Crown Realtors.

Anita Page Anita Page was one of the reigning stars at MGM during the late1920s and early 1930s. She scored a big hit with Our Dancing Daughters in 1928, co-starring with Joan Crawford. This was one of a trilogy of films of the wild 1920s flapper era. In 1929, she co-starred with Ramon Navarro in the first movie about naval aviation: The Flying Fleet. The film had many scenes shot at North Island and the Hotel Del. Page quit making movies in 1936 and later married her second husband, Lt. Herschel House. In 1954, they moved to Coronado where House became an admiral. They resided at 717 A Ave. for many years.

Constance Cummings Coronado High School student Constance Halverstadt showed much promise in her drama class and in the school plays. Dramatic director Clara Bell Cutler encouraged the 1927 graduate to pursue acting. Halverstadt soon moved to Hollywood where her name was changed to Constance Cummings. She starred in the Harold Lloyd film Movie Crazy in 1932, and co-starred with Spencer Tracy in Looking for Trouble in 1934. In order to pursue her stage career, Cummings moved to England in 1934 where she appeared frequently on stage and screen. She was made Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth in 1974.

Merian Cooper Merian C. Cooper is little known today, yet he could have been the model for Indiana Jones. He retired in Coronado with his movie star wife, Dorothy Jordan. He started his career as a reporter at several city newspapers then joined the Georgia National Guard and in 1916, chased Pancho Villa in Mexico. He also learned to fly airplanes and was commissioned a lieutenant.

During World War I, he was shot down and became a POW in a German hospital.

After the war, Cooper joined relief efforts in Poland and volunteered as a pilot in the Kosciuszko Squadron during the Polish-Soviet War. He was shot down again, captured

by Cossacks and spent nine months in a Soviet prison camp. He escaped and went to Latvia.

In 1921, Cooper and cameraman Ernest Schoedsack sailed to Abyssinia and met Emperor Haille Salaissie. On the way back, their ship was attacked by pirates and burned. Next, they went to Persia to make the documentary film Grass about the Bakhtiari tribe. The 1925 film got Cooper and Schoedsack a deal with movie mogul Jessie Lasky to make the documentary Chang in Thailand. By then, the New Yorker called Cooper the “T.E. Lawrence” of the movies.

In 1929, the two made the feature film, The Four Feathers.

Cooper also wrote a script based on a vision: King Kong. But he wasn’t able to produce it until his friend David O. Selznick became vice president of RKO Pictures in 1931. Cooper and Schoedsack produced and directed King Kong in 1933 for RKO, where it became a huge hit. Subsequently, Cooper produced the first Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film at RKO. Cooper re-enlisted as a colonel in the Army Air Corps as World War II began. He became chief of staff to Gen. Claire Chenault of the Flying Tigers and finished the war as a brigadier general, witnessing the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri.

He returned to Hollywood and formed the production company Argosy Pictures with John Ford, making classics such as The Searchers, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande, and The Quiet Man. He received an

honorary Oscar in 1952. Cooper stayed active even after his move to 952 E Ave. His wife since 1933, Dorothy Jordan, made over 25 movies. She starred with Douglas Fairbanks, Myrna Loy, Clark Gable, Joel McCrea and John Wayne.

Frank “Spig” Wead Another aviator and resident of Coronado that had a big impact on Hollywood movies was Frank “Spig” Wead. Wead was a naval aviator (U.S. Naval Academy class of 1916) and lived with his wife, Minnie, and two children in Coronado. His career was cut short when he fell down the stairs of his house at 827 A Ave., fractured his neck and became paralyzed in his legs. After an operation and extensive therapy, he regained some use of his legs. Wead turned to writing screenplays. His first was The Flying Fleet. A list of some 37 film credits followed, including other films shot in Coronado such as Hell Divers and Dive Bomber. The Wings of Eagles (1957) was based on his life and starred John Wayne as Wead. He was able to rejoin the

Navy during World War II, where he saw action in the Pacific theater with the rank of commander.

Dick Van Dyke Dick Van Dyke’s likable persona was sealed with his roles in Mary Poppins (1964) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). These were complemented by the success of the Dick Van Dyke Show on television (1961-1966). In 1974, Van Dyke and his then-spouse Marjorie Willett bought a house in the Coronado Cays. Van Dyke had been staying for an extended time at the Hotel del Coronado. He was often seen at Marco’s Italian Restaurant, The Mexican Village or Clayton’s or driving around town in his Mercedes 280 SL convertible and played tennis at Bahama Village in the Cays. After a few years, the Van Dykes moved to a ranch in Arizona.

Lisa Bruce Coronado High School graduate Lisa Bruce is a two-time Oscar nominee and BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) winner from producing The Theory of Everything (2014) and Darkest Hour (2017). Her list of films includes co-producing No Strings Attached (2011) and The Emperor’s Club (2002). Bruce came to Coronado in the sixth grade when her father was stationed here as commanding officer of the USS Ticonderoga. After graduating from CHS, she studied filmmaking at UC Santa Barbara and then NYU Graduate Film School. She currently serves on the Coronado Island Film Festival’s Industry Advisory Board. Bruce has come a long way since her older brother Bob, hired by the Village Theater, subcontracted her to sweep and mop the floors for $1 an hour.

Hotel del Coronado held a unique position during World War I—not only were The Del’s guests affluent and socially well-connected, they had everything in common with the military officers who populated the nearby aviation school, men who also descended from America’s most prosperous and prominent families.

John D. Spreckels, the hotel’s second owner, had predicted a future in ocean takeoffs and landings and provided waterfront land to pioneer aviators as early as 1911.

Flying conditions were so ideal,

the Army’s Signal Corps established a flight school on North Island, setting the precedent for continued military residency.

After the United States entered WWI in April 1917, Coronado’s airfield saw increased military activity, and The Del provided elite officers with a socially familiar home-away-from-home, along with a packed calendar of events. Civilian guests – wealthy families settling in for a “season” of sunshine and carefree socializing – also had a ringside seat from which to witness America’s

military preparedness.

The Del hosted the Earl of Dunmore, who was on an American speaking tour about the Great War, a steady stream of military-themed dinners, afternoon tea dances, costumed balls and twice-daily band concerts featuring patriotic selections at Tent City. A daily guest program dated March 11, 1918, reflected the resort’s war awareness: “For the Information of Our Guests: In response to President Wilson’s recommendations for national food conservation, the following rules

will govern dining room service: Monday and Wednesday will be wheatless days; Tuesday will be a meatless day; Sunday will be a porkless day; and Luncheon has been designated as the daily wheatless meal.”

Thrift stamps, which helped finance the war effort, were on sale in the hotel lobby, and in 1918, Del employees held a war stamp drive, raising $17,725. Donations of “money, new or used clothing of every description, fancy and household articles, laces, ribbons and books” were solicited for the Coronado branch Red Cross Shop. Knitting bags were brought to all 1918 Del social events, so guests could continue their efforts making sweaters and socks for the troops. One knitter was Coronado socialite, Wallis Warfield Spencer, whose first husband Earl Winfield Spencer was the first commanding officer of North Island.

According to Wallis, when the war ended on Nov. 11, 1918, “There were celebrations all day and far into the night when most of the population of Coronado – men and women, officers, enlisted men and civilians – danced in the streets.”

Life at The Del continued on as before.

The 10th annual Charity Ball, the social event of the season, was held on Feb. 28, 1919. The newspaper editors declared the affair as “The smart set regaining its own with the coming of peace after the depression and strain of war times.”

During 1919, many officers made their headquarters at The Del during their long details here and countless social affairs were held. From the Great War, a new world order had emerged. Europe was left battered and war-torn, long-standing monarchies were replaced, and America had been forced into the international arena.

Hotel del Coronado was perfectly poised for the Roaring ’20s.

The Coronado Beach Company held a public auction, selling selected lots on Coronado Beach. The ferry made trips across the bay every 30 minutes to accommodate the crowds. More than 6,000 people came over from San Diego. A San Diego Union story stated that visitors were “whirled by steam-cars from bay shore to seashore along an avenue lined with oranges trees and spraying fountains.” A large tent by the beach was erected for the auction and a free lunch of coffee and sandwiches was served. Bidding began at 11 a.m., and by the end of the day 350 lots had sold for a total of $110,000. Maj. Levi Chase, the lawyer who negotiated the purchase of the peninsula for Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story, bought the first oceanfront lot.

A Search for Answers

Coronado resident Mary Ann Mearns, better known as Pat, was the wife of an Air Force fighter pilot who was listed as missing in action in Vietnam after he ejected from his damaged plane over Hanoi in 1966.

It would be years before Pat learned whether he was alive or dead, a time of unimaginable uncertainty and dread. During that time, she became part of a group of women who took on the U.S. government to advocate for their husbands who were prisoners of war, demanding better treatment and fighting to get them home.

Serving a tour in Vietnam, Maj. Arthur Mearns was closing in on a hundred combat missions, which meant an automatic return from deployment and back to his family. On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 1966, while flying his Republic F-105 Thunderchief fighter bomber on a mission over Hanoi, Mearns’ plane was hit heavily by enemy fire. He headed toward the South China Sea where Navy and Air Force assets might rescue him, but his plane began breaking apart, so he ejected. That was the last anyone saw of Mearns.

With two children, Frances and Missy, Pat Mearns was in limbo during those years of not knowing. She dedicated herself to trying to help the Red Cross identify those missing in action. Pat traveled often to Washington, D.C., to urge congressmen into action. She traveled to England, the Vatican, Romania, Russia, Laos,

Vietnam and India, and she was part of a large contingent of other wives who attended the Paris Peace Talks to advocate for the POWs. Pat worked tirelessly to find her husband, working alongside other POW wives in the National League of POW/MIA Families. Arthur Mearns (later promoted to colonel in absentia) was assumed to be a POW. After years of advocacy and searching for answers, Pat learned that her husband was killed on impact. It took 11 years to receive an official notice of his death and his remains were returned to the United States.

On Oct. 28, 1977, his status was changed from MIA to Killed in Action. Two weeks later, on Veterans Day, exactly 11 years after his last mission, Mearns was buried with honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Mearns earned the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

In her new book, The League of Wives,

Mr. Frederick W. Koeppen, one of Coronado’s pioneers died. Koeppen, who was more than 90 years old, came to Coronado in 1886 and was the first landscape gardener at the Hotel del Coronado. After 18 years of service with the hotel, he retired and lived at 716 Eighth St. Koeppen was also a charter member of the local Presbyterian Church.

author Heath Lee interviewed a number of wives including Pat, who is one of the women featured on the cover. The book tells an inspiring story of how the POW and MIA wives took on the U.S. government, becoming bold and empowered to demand action in Washington, D.C. The League of Wives: Vietnam’s POW/MIA Allies & Advocates is now on exhibit at the Coronado Historical Association. In partnership with the Dole Institute of Politics, the special exhibition tells the story of the military wives who founded the organization that would later become the National League of POW/MIA Families. The free exhibit is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Oct. 12, 1961

After the Armistice had been signed, an aerial pageant of 200 airplanes from Rockwell Field and other nearby military airfields flew in mass formation over San Diego in celebration. Five aerobatic planes flew first, performing stunts over Broadway only a couple of hundred feet off the ground. Different waves of airplanes in “V” formations followed, filling the sky with aircraft in all directions. One of the pilots was a young Jimmy Doolittle who had enlisted in the Army on Rockwell Field only a year before. The aerial pageant represented many months of pilot training, $2.4 million in aircraft, and the latest in airplane construction.

On Thanksgiving Day, daredevil aviator Lincoln Beachey completed the first airplane loopthe-loop in America. Taking off from the grounds of the aviation school on North Island, he flew over the Coronado Polo Field where 10,000 people came to see him fly. He performed the feat three times, earning $2,000 for each loop. After his performance, Beachy landed at the polo field to thunderous applause before flying back to North Island.

Book Bindings United Through Reading helps military families stay connected

M

onths-long deployments are part of life for most military families. At any given time, there are scores of families in Coronado dealing with the absence of a loved one in service. It can be stressful for everyone, but especially children who have a limited understanding of the passage of time or what a deployment means.

United Through Reading (UTR), a San Diego-based nonprofit, is helping to keep deployed parents connected with their children

through its program by providing storytelling on demand. Service members are videotaped reading children’s stories, then while the parent is deployed, the videos are given to the children to watch while they are away.

These videos are sometimes the only form of contact children have with their deployed parents for stretches of time. While technology has come a long way, there are many places around the world, including the middle of the ocean, where communication is sporadic | NOVEMBER 2019

or nonexistent. In our modern age of virtual connectiveness, it’s hard to fathom not being able to call or FaceTime anytime we want. Different time zones, erratic work hours and the attention spans of children who typically don’t respond well without advance notice of a phone call from mommy or daddy make spontaneous communications a challenge.

“Service members don’t always have access to cellular service, or it’s not reliable,” said Carrie Smith,

a military spouse and director of special events and special initiatives at UTR. And she said, the videos let the kids have control over when they want to listen to a story, whether it’s at bedtime or naptime.

United Through Reading was founded 30 years ago on the 32nd Street Naval Base in San Diego making VHS recordings of sailors on the pier before their ships left.

Over the last three decades, UTR has grown to serve all branches of the military around the world.

Sally Ann Zoll, a Coronado resident for 44 years, has been the CEO of United Through Reading since 2007. With a doctorate in education, she is devoted to improving literacy while also supporting military families.

“Coronado is no stranger to supporting our military community as home to Naval Base Coronado,” she said. “At United Through Reading, we love being a part of this community and serving these families that give so much back to our country.” Coronado is home to hundreds of military families, whether they live on Naval Air Station North Island, Rendova Circle on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado at Strand Housing or in Coronado neighborhoods.

taping, blocking out sounds that might be confusing or scary to kids.

On board the carrier, information about United Through Reading spreads via the onboard TV station, posters and word of mouth. Most stories get recorded during the workup cycle, prior to the actual deployment, so children have their videos in hand when a parent leaves for an extended time.

Sullivan has four young children so he recorded stories as well. “My wife is a reading specialist, so this is an extension of that. It keeps

families communicating who might not have the connection without the tapes from United Through Reading,” he said.

Although the primary goal is to tape parents reading to their kids, UTR is open to other relatives and occasions. Many sailors don’t have their own children but have nieces and nephews with whom they want to stay connected.

Other tapings can be birthday and holiday greetings to family members or spouse to spouse messages. It’s all about keeping the connections strong.

In November 2018, United Through Reading launched its newest venture, the Mobile Story Station, with the support of BAE Systems, the County of San Diego and the Parker Foundation. The CROWNCITYMAGAZINE.COM

Launched in November 2018, United Through Reading’s Mobile Story Station has made recording stories more accessible and is serving more service members than ever before.

Mobile Story Station is a van that can be used for recording, allowing thousands of service members stationed at Naval Base Coronado and other military installations in San Diego County to be part of Storytime on Demand.

In less than a year, the colorful mobile recording studio has facilitated video recordings for military families at Silver Strand Elementary School, numerous commands at Naval Base Coronado and at USS Theodore Roosevelt.

In addition, it has been a part of community events such the Beach Bash and Campout Under the Stars at Naval Air Station North Island and Dr. Seuss Storytime at Coronado Public Library.

“With over 100,000 active duty service members and 120,000 military family members in the greater San Diego region, we knew that we could serve more of our 32

A Lasting Memory

HeartsApart.org is a national organization that provides soonto-be deployed service members and their families photography services at no cost. The goal is to send a military member off with meaningful, keepsake photographs on a laminated bi-fold card, easily tucked into a pocket, close to the heart.

Cooking for a Cause Volunteers help Monarch School with roasted turkeys

or the last two years, Coronado resident Rick Shaughnessy has harnessed the enormous generosity of an army of local friends and restaurants help to bring a happier Thanksgiving to children and teens affected by homelessness. The group provides cooked turkeys to the Project Connect Thanksgiving Family Dinner and Harvest Festival at the Monarch School in Barrio Logan.

Monarch School serves students impacted by the most severe cases of chronic homelessness, addressing the academic disruption that accompanies their circumstances. The school also provides support services and programs not traditionally available at neighborhood schools.

The community turkey project took wing in 2017 when Project Connect’s source of cooked birds was unexpectedly interrupted. The school sent an urgent appeal to volunteers to help by roasting a bird for the event. Shaughnessy, who has been involved in several activities at the school, sent emails to friends across Coronado. The response was overwhelming.

“I thought that if I asked my friends, I could probably get 10 turkeys for the event. ‘Wouldn’t that be amazing,’ I thought. I sent an email out to people in my contact list and the response was unbelievable,” Shaughnessy recalled.

By marshaling the enormous power of generous friends, home cooks and professional chefs from the Blue Bridge Restaurants, 33 turkeys and 30 quarts of gravy rolled over the bridge to Monarch that year. In 2018, Project Connect appealed directly to Shaughnessy to enlist Coronado’s help again, and 40 turkeys were prepared and delivered.

Monarch students’ living arrangements include local family shelters, shelters for victims of domestic violence, teen shelters, motels or in vehicles with their families or doubled up with other families. With all the instability in their lives, a Thanksgiving meal can mean a lot.

According to the San Diego County Office of Education, it is estimated there are more than 23,000 students affected by homelessness in San Diego County.

It’s not hard to imagine the disruption these kids have had to endure, including, long absences from the classroom and below-grade-level achievements. Monarch is the only accredited comprehensive K-12 school in the United States specifically developed to serve the needs of homeless students. Almost 450 students attend Monarch each year, and there is a growing alumni network of more than 130 graduates.

The Monarch School is a public-private partnership between the San Diego County Office of Education and the nonprofit Monarch School Project. It began 33 years ago in a single room and was known as The Progressive Learning Alternative Center for Education, or The PLACE. In 1998, the students renamed it in honor of the monarch butterfly and its ability to transform itself, symbolizing their hopes of a better life.

After several moves and generous community and corporate donations, the Monarch School moved to its current 2.2acre campus in Barrio Logan. Attendance, behavior and classroom performance of Monarch’s students have shown tremendous growth when compared to their homeless counterparts at other schools. Much of this is a result of the programs, teachers, staff and volunteer commitments to these young people with tremendous needs.

In addition to classroom work, students have access to a long list of programs and services including academic support, after-school programs, interscholastic sports, music/dance, backpacks and school supplies, clothing/shoes, shower and laundry facilities, gardening/cooking classes, counseling/therapy, housing assistance, medical/dental/vision care as well as classes for parenting and wellness of the family. They also have an alumni staff coordinator who keeps in touch with

students, providing support either in person or by phone.

Shaughnessy has worked with seventh-grade students on poetry and organized an annual sailing field trip. For many it is their first time on the water.

The Project Connect Thanksgiving Family Dinner and Harvest Festival is coordinated by the group Project: Connect San Diego. The meal is served family style in the spirit of community.

Planning begins several months prior and includes decorations, food prep, food servers and games set up for all age groups. Donors, volunteers, students and families

come together to make the event a memorable experience. It is followed by the Harvest festival, which includes carnival games, face painting, treats and prizes.

The holidays are a time of great emotional and physical need for those who are those experiencing homelessness. In 2019, Project Connect will again need help from Coronado volunteers to make this year’s festival complete.

It could be turkeys – or maybe pies or volunteers. Whatever the need, if you’re a friend of Rick Shaughnessy, you can be pretty sure you will be receiving an email asking for help.

he warm, long summer days are coming to an end, and the crisp autumn air is saying hello.

It’s time to break out the pumpkin-spice scented candles and that favorite cozy sweater. As we embrace the change in season, nothing puts us in the holiday mood like fall decorating.

This is that special time of year where friends and family gather around the dinner table, so cultivating a beautiful tablescape is key.

Bring in rich greens, deep burgundies and pops of marigold for a fall color scheme that add warmth and depth to a table or any surface. Place a few candle holders along your centerpiece to instantly make your dining room cozy and inviting.

Here are some of our favorite fall decor items to keep your table festive and ready to entertain.

• TABLE RUNNERS AND NAPKINS. One of our go-to table runners for fall is made from a simple strip of burlap. To spice things up a bit, spray-painted black stripes the length of a runner. Or keep things more classic with striped black-and-white napkins paired with a plain burlap runner.

• SLATE SERVING BOARD. Serving boards are a must when getting ready for a holiday party. They are a simple and easy way to make your appetizers look fresh with a gourmet touch.

• WOOD AND WOVEN TONES. Woven vases and wooden cake stands will keep your table looking warm and rustic.

• FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS. Chrysanthemums, dahlias and thistle are a few of our favorite fall blooms.

Add dried greens such as foxtail, millet, lagurus or eucalyptus to give an earthy flare to your centerpiece that will last all season long.

• PUMPKINS AND GOURDS. Would it really be a fall tablescape without pumpkins? If you prefer a more subtle look, place just a few white or orange sugar-pie pumpkins on your tablescape.

• FOOD. Fill empty spaces on your table or counter with a mix of colorful autumn fruits or vegetables. Pears, apples, grapes, pomegranates, fennel and persimmons are easy finds at the market and make the perfect last-minute touch.

Sagos’ Saga S

ago palms are found in landscaping all over Coronado. They are not really a palm, but in the cycad family (Cycas revoluta) and date back to prehistoric times.

Native to southern Japan, they are wellsuited to drought-tolerant Southern California gardens. The plants make an architectural statement with the leaves symmetrically spread out in a wide circle, but they are most interesting when they are in their reproductive cycle.

Propagation occurs with either seeds or side shoots.

Sagos are dioecious meaning the plants have male and female reproductive organs in separate plants with the males bearing pollen cones (strobilus) and the females bearing megasporophylls, or more simply put, a clump of modified leaves. Male pollen cones look like skinny, yellow pinecones, producing pollen that settles in the female’s megasporophylls, fertilizing the seeds wrapped in the fuzzy, soft leaves.

Female sagos are especially beautiful with their artistically styled and fuzzy leaves. One year I had an epiphany on a historic home tour after looking at Arts and Crafts-era wallpaper. It seemed obvious that artists of that era were inspired by the shape of these leaves because they were prevalent in a lot of the era’s patterns and designs. Sago palms were an unusual and novel plant around the turn of the 20th century.

Very slow growers, Sagos typically aren’t mature enough to bloom and reproduce until they are 15 to 20 years old, and some never bloom at all. Until your sago blooms, you won't know if you have a male or a female plant. Since it takes two to tango, it’s a bit tricky if you are buying immature plants with the intent to propagate them.

Sagos are a popular landscaping plant, but when they are still small, they can be striking indoor plants as well. Indoors, they are happiest with strong, indirect lighting and water needs are low.

Very much a part of our Southern California landscape, sagos bring an interesting mix of prehistoric, Arts and Crafts flair to Coronado gardens.

Side note: All parts of the sago palm, especially the seeds, are poisonous. Dogs find sago seeds particularly palatable, but they are extremely toxic if eaten.

If your yard contains a sago palm accessible to your dog, please consider moving the plant to an inaccessible part of your property.

Also, be mindful on your walks.

There might be seeds laying under sagos along your route that your dog might want to snack on.
