A NOTE FROM THE GUEST EDITOR | Mayor John Duncan

It is my pleasure to write to you as the guest editor for January 2026. I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season! My favorite night of the year is the Holiday Parade with the Christmas tree lighting. Seeing the thousands of happy faces up and down Orange Avenue celebrating our community and the season is truly joyous.

I recently completed my first year as Mayor of Coronado. I am proud of the City Council and how well we have worked together as a team. As I stated upon taking office, I was excited to work with these accomplished individuals who care so much about Coronado. Mark Fleming, Amy Steward, and Kelly Purvis were all first-time Councilmembers. They, along with Councilmember Carrie Downey, all work incredibly hard for Coronado. It was my goal that at Council meetings, all Councilmembers would be treated the same and be entitled to speak on all issues they desire. I regularly check in with the Councilmembers on how the meetings went, and I believe that goal has been accomplished.

All of the Councilmembers spend hundreds of hours serving on outside entities to protect and further Coronado’s interests. As we move into the next year, we will continue to work on important issues with a variety of organizations including SANDAG, Caltrans, The Port of San Diego, San Diego County, and the State of California.

As many of you know, one of my main issues as Mayor is to continue to push for 100 percent resolution of the Tijuana Sewage issue via an expansion of the US plant, critical improvements to Mexican infrastructure, and documented and enforceable agreements with Mexico. On December 15, the US and Mexico entered into a new agreement, Minute 333, which contains additional obligations to resolve this issue. The US plant expansion is being expedited and will be finished in 2027, with improvements over the course of 2026.

Other major goals are to continue fiscally responsible governance of the City, improve our aging infrastructure, work with Caltrans on the bridge barrier, and work with the Port to expedite the Ferry Landing remodel.

I would like to thank all of our City Staff for their professionalism and for being such a pleasure to work with at City Hall. I am excited about the hires during 2025 and look forward to continuing to improve the service to the community.

On a personal note, my wife, Peggy, and I are enjoying being empty nesters with all four of our kiddos going to college back east, though we always look forward to their visits home. I also congratulate Peggy for her successful year as President of FOCUS (Friends of Children United Society)!

It is truly an honor to represent Coronado as Mayor. I wish everyone the best in 2026. Happy New Year!

A Walk Back in Time with Carol Pastor Meet Our Monthly History Columnist

f you’ve picked up more than one edition of our magazine, you’ll have noticed that a staple of our monthly issues is an installment by long-time Coronado resident Carol Pastor, volunteer correspondent for the Coronado Historical Association (CHA). Every month, her history column provides a glimpse into decades’ past, cataloging the lesserknown histories behind some of our beloved local traditions, buildings, and people. With a new year starting, we’d like to introduce Carol to our readers as the person behind these columns — a selfless volunteer, a creative, a businesswoman, and the cornerstone of a large Coronado family.

Carol grew up in Troy, New York, and studied at St. Joseph’s College in Maryland, where she earned a B.S. in Food and Nutrition. Moving to Oakland, California, for a hospital internship at a county hospital, she met and married her husband, Morton H. Pastor, M.D., who was then finishing his anesthesiology residency. Working first as a nutritionist, Carol soon embarked on managing their many joint business ventures in design, construction, and real estate. Alongside her husband, she owned a gym and jewelry stores, developed a senior housing facility, attended law school, and founded a newspaper — the Island Inquirer — all while raising her seven girls.

After living in San Jose and Santa Monica, Carol and Morton moved to Coronado in 1975 with their daughters in tow. After initially purchasing units at the Coronado Shores, they traded several for Crown Manor (1015 Ocean Blvd.) in 1977. A history buff and architecture aficionado, Carol jumped at the chance to bring the property to life as the mansion’s first permanent residents in half a century. There, the family hosted many elegant political and charity dinners, and people ranging from the beach polo players to the friends

and teammates of Carol’s daughters, who all graduated from Coronado High School.

Carol began volunteering frequently after her husband passed in 2005, and has been an active supporter of local community organizations in the two decades since. She has led and served on numerous committees, including as president of Friends of the Coronado Public Library, where she worked at the Second Hand Prose bookshop and helped

with the annual Flower Show. During a 14-year tenure at the Coronado Police Department’s branch of the Retired and Senior Volunteers Program (RSVP), Carol contributed to public safety by serving on the board and as treasurer, and coordinated the Health and Wellness Committee for volunteers. She was recognized for her dedication in April 2017 as RSVP volunteer of the month, selected from more than 1,400 volunteers countywide. She could often be seen driving one of the CPD volunteer SUVs or directing traffic at our local parades on the Fourth of July. She also volunteered her time on the Historic Resource Commission.

In her free time, Carol hosts family events, reads avidly as a member of a book club, enjoys plays at Lamb’s, and continues to travel, often visiting her cousins on their Vermont farm. Over the years, she has pursued diverse creative outlets, including knitting, painting, puzzling, and jewelry-making. While her family members are often the lucky beneficiaries of her many creations, Carol has always been mindful of those in need, and she has spent countless hours knitting hats for cancer patients. More recently, she has applied her love of painting to a new pursuit, joining a local group that creates watercolor cards for hospital patients. Carol can often be found at Tartine or the Coronado Coffee Company for a morning Kaffeeklatsch with her daughters or grandchildren, and on Tuesdays, volunteering at CHA. While working with CHA, Carol has been one of our longeststanding contributors. Her monthly columns cover the early history of Coronado’s development, changes to its commercial district, preservation of historic homes, the town’s experiences during major international conflicts, holiday traditions in the village, the formation of local organizations that host our most cherished events, and more. Her column also complements and introduces CHA exhibitions, such as her 2023 Salute series honoring the 50th anniversary of the return of the Vietnam POWs. Through her diligent research in the CHA archives, thoughtful writing, and nostalgic tone — often infusing the stories with her own anecdotes — readers gain insight into what has changed and what has stayed the same since the city was founded. Whether you are third-generation, a new transplant, or a weekend visitor picking up a copy of our magazine, Carol’s column delights readers with a walk back in time, educating as to how we’ve arrived where we are today and instilling a sense of the shared values we still hold as a town.

In 2025, Carol celebrated her 90th birthday and her 50th anniversary of living in Coronado. During this time, she has experienced — and contributed to — nearly everything the island has to offer. Her recollections of a Coronado past, and her observations as she has watched the town evolve in real time, are the secret ingredient that has made family gatherings around her dinning room table special for me and my relatives growing up.

We are proud to share these stories each month in collaboration with CHA. Appreciating the past through Carol’s eyes is part of what continues to make each issue of Crown City Magazine both meaningful and grounded as we look ahead.

Legumes Bring Good Luck in The New Year

rowing up in a Southern household, beans and rice were a “Sunday Kind of Love.” I hear tell that beans were made on Sundays in the South because they cooked low and slow; one could set-itand-forget-it. Sunday was traditionally laundry day. A large pot of beans would simmer away while washing and folding.

I still make a big batch of beans on Sunday so I have easy meals throughout the week. My new favorite heirloom bean is a Christmas Lima Bean from Rancho Gordo. I love all Rancho Gordo products, and you know I made a big batch of these Christmas Lima Beans over the holidays. Now, however, it is a brand-new year, 2026, and we all could use a little luck.

The New Year is the perfect time for black eyed peas to take center stage.

The only way to ring in the New Year in our house is a big pot of black eyed peas, some Carolina Gold Rice, a mess of collard greens, and some of my mother's corn bread with Steen’s Blackstrap molasses.

Black eyes peas resemble a coin, and the green in collards represents greenbacks — dollar, dollar bills, y’all. The yellow of corn bread symbolizes pure gold. In Italy, fava beans are a symbol of luck and fertility. Soybeans are consumed in China for good health and luck. The Chinese say, “A bean in the hand is worth two in the ground.” In Aztec culture, beans were considered a gift from the gods and used in religious ceremonies.

The list goes on. Just ask Jack about his magic beans. I think the golden goose is proof enough. If you already consider yourself lucky, just dig in because beans are both delicious and good for you.

Preparing a magical batch of beans is surprisingly simple. First, sauté some aromatics like an onion. Lately, I have been using a combination of leeks and shallots, followed by a healthy amount of garlic. The right liquid is essential. Yes, you can use water, but where I come from, water doesn't come flavored. I use chicken or beef stock instead. If you so desire, a jar of good tomato purée or a can of fire-roasted tomatoes makes a nice addition. If I have a ham hock — and it's a dark day when I don't — I throw that in the mix. You can also use a smoked turkey neck, wing, or drumstick. If none of those tickle your fancy, I fry up a pack of bacon, remove the meat, and use the grease to sauté the aromatics. I then chop the crisp bacon and fold it back into the beans before serving, perfection.

A popular recipe in the South is Barbecue Butter Beans. This variation uses slightly different aromatics — onion, celery, green bell pepper (the holy trinity) — and ham hock, with the addition of a tablespoon or two of a BBQ dry rub, a healthy splash of your favorite BBQ sauce, and a good dash of hot sauce (Red Rooster or Tabasco), all added to the cooking liquid. Goodness gracious, a well-made bowl of Butter Beans will make you stand up and take notice. But don't be afraid to experiment and add your own twist. Chef Sean Brock has a wonderful recipe from his restaurant, Husk. I strongly suggest you look this up, and I will share a recipe for Chef Brock’s Hoppin' John, which is the dish of choice for New Year's Day. I wish all of you and yours a happy and prosperous 2026. Hedge your bets, surround yourself with friends and family, and eat some lucky food.

Hoppin John

Ingredients: For the Peas: • 1 cup of Anson Mills Sea Island Peas, soaked in water and refrigerated overnight, drained • 2 quarts of stock (preferably pork, but chicken will do) • 1 large onion, medium dice • 1 large carrot, medium dice • 2 celery stalks, medium dice • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced thin • 1 bay leaf For the rice: • 1 cup of Anson Mills Carolina Gold Rice • Salt and cayenne pepper to taste • 7 cups of water • 4 Tablespoons of butter

Directions: For the peas: In a large stockpot, bring the stock to a simmer, then add all ingredients. Cook for one hour over low heat, partially covered.

When peas are tender, season well with salt.

For the rice: Bring the water and salt to a boil in a heavy-bottomed stockpot. Add the rice, stir once, and return to a simmer. Simmer gently, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the rice is almost fully cooked, about 15 minutes. Do not overcook. Drain the rice and rinse with cold water.

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Spread the rice onto a sheet tray. Place it in the oven to dry, stirring occasionally (mine took 10 minutes). Be careful not to smash the rice. Dice the butter and spread evenly over the rice. Continue stirring every few minutes until the butter has melted.

Notes: 1. I order so many things from Anson Mills (ansonmills.com), but a bag of dried Blackeyed peas and a regular long-grain rice will do. However, if you have never experienced Carolina Gold rice, you are not living your best life. Just saying.

2. Sean’s method of cooking rice is far from the norm, but it works great. Truth be told, I use my high-tech Zojirushi rice maker. Sorry, Mom, I still use the stove-top method from time to time.

3. Pork stock is fantastic, but you won't find it in most stores. A ham hock added to your chicken stock will do just fine.

4. Sean Brock’s grandmother's cornbread recipe, which you can find online, is perfect for this dish, as it is laced with bacon dust and crumbles easily. A handful of this cornbread, crumbled over your Hoppin' John, will take your experience to the next level.

Another Year, Another Reason To Be Fabulous!

Another year is here! There is something magical about the clean slate of January — the very first of 12 new months, ripe with potential. It brings with it a reminder that we have a chance to make dreams come true, try new and exciting things, and accomplish goals we set out for ourselves.

And speaking of new things… this month also marks one full year since I began writing my beauty column for Crown City Magazine. I am truly so grateful for this opportunity.

Every time someone tells me they read the column, loved it, or benefitted from it in some way, it makes me incredibly happy. Writing has been a brand-new creative outlet for me. It brings me so much joy to share ideas, stories, and inspiration with our amazing Coronado community. Thank you for reading, for supporting, and for being on this journey with me. This past year, I did something new that I had always been curious about: I got my “colors done.” It was such an interesting experience! Sharon and Joyce, the two women who founded the local Coronado business that does Color Analysis, The Color Studio, studied color theory in London, England.

They warmly welcomed me into their adorable work studio on Isabella Avenue, and we got right to it! They asked that I arrive without a trace of makeup on, and we then tied my hair back with a headband. Sharon and Gail began the "draping process.” Layer after layer of draped fabric on me, and then once the video was recording, 26

As we step into the new year, instead of overwhelming ourselves with a long list of resolutions — many of which fade by mid-February — I invite you to choose something simpler, more meaningful, and far more transformative.

LET’S SET JUST 3 GOALS.

(Here are some examples) Goal 1: A Small Daily Ritual That Nourishes Your Spirit -Could be taking five minutes every morning to stretch before getting on your phone or doing a daily 10 minute walk. they began to quickly pull them off one by one.

When we watched the video afterwards, you can literally see my face changing color with each different fabric next to it. It was fascinating! We talked about hair color, lipstick color, jewelry and more!

Turns out I'm a "Cool Autumn.” It’s truly incredible what the right colors can do for you. I never knew black wasn’t my color! I really thought it looked good on everyone.

Now that I understand my personal palette, I realize how wrong I was. When I go shopping, I pull out the little file with the colors they selected for me, and I stick to those ranges.

I even adjusted my hair color slightly after the analysis, and it made such a difference. It feels more natural and harmonizes better with my skin tone.

Thanks to the Coronado Ukulele Club and its fabulous, fearless leader, Tricia Lynn Navarro, I now play music and my dream of “being in a band” has come true. I’m not perfect, but I play with heart, feel joyful every time, and have made wonderful new friends. If you’re curious about ukulele, we welcome everyone at coronadoukuleleclub.com. And if music isn’t your thing, find another passion—learn something new, stretch your brain, and fill your social cup.

Learning something new also boosts your brain — building new neural pathways and releasing dopamine tied to joy, focus, and confidence. I truly feel happier and sharper because of it.

Home Is Where the Heart Is

Local Designer Creates Spaces with Soul

estled against an upholstered headboard, surrounded by light blue painted walls, and cuddled up with her mom in their weekly perusal of the Sunday funnies, local interior designer Adrienne Kravchuk knew the true meaning of “home” from a very young age - and that it was about so much more than design and aesthetic. “My mom always made such a lovely home wherever we were - but above all she created structure and peace and joy in our household,” says Kravchuk. “I always felt so warm and safe at home with her.”

Kravchuk’s mom, Jamie, is a five-foot-tall powerhouse, who somehow managed to accomplish this feat of motherhood as a single mom, also balancing a successful career as one of the first female Special Agents for U.S. Customs, starting her career in Chicago in the late ‘70s and moving to California shortly after Kravchuk was born. “Looking back as a grown woman now,” says Kravchuk, “I have no idea how she did all that! She never even missed one of my many gymnastics and dance practices. She’s amazing.”

Kravchuk remembers one Christmas Eve when she and her mom stayed in a small town in the south of France. “It was this beautiful little village filled with twinkling lights and a big cross at the top of a hill. I could hear and see people in the windows of their homes, warm light and laughter spilling out all around them,” she recalls. It was their first Christmas without extended family, so she hadn’t been sure of what to expect.

But the host of the bed & breakfast where they were staying invited Kravchuk and her mom to join them for a meal. “I was only 11, having this Christmas dinner in an unfamiliar town, but we felt so welcomed and enveloped by warmth and kindness. It was one of my favorite Christmases, and reminded me that anywhere, even surrounded by strangers, can feel like home.”

One of her mother’s many interests was travel - which Kravchuk loved. “It was just the two of us, traveling the world,” she says. And because of their solid bond, “being together meant that ‘home’ followed us everywhere.”

When Kravchuk was 16, her mom had the opportunity to retire and she took it. The duo moved from Fremont, CA, where they had lived for most of Kravchuk’s childhood, and resettled in Fort Myers, FL to be closer to family. “It was culture shock,” says Kravchuk. “I had come from a really cultured, academic environment in California and moved to a small southern Florida town where sports were a huge deal and girls my age were planning to go to college just for their ‘MRS’ degree,” she laughs. But my mom and I were surrounded by my wonderful grandma and aunt and soon that started to feel like home, too. I fell in love with the beautiful southern life there.”

It was there, during her senior year in high school, that Kravchuk discovered she could make a career out of a passion she had long felt but not always been able to put into words. During career week at her school, her grandma, mom and aunt asked her what she thought she wanted to be.

Reflecting on how one of her favorite pastimes as a child was playing with dollhouses and model home shopping with her mom, and how much she Adrienne's grandparents, the late James cherished spaces that "Jimmy" Royal Barnes and Elizabeth felt welcoming and safe, "Betty" Louise Wood-Barnes. c.1945 Kravchuk responded, “I wish I could make houses pretty.” Her supportive family encouraged her then to pursue a future in interior design, and she’s been living her career dream since.

Kravchuk attended an intensive study program at the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York City in 2003. It was a challenging and rewarding experience wherein she worked closely with architecture students from Columbia University and multiplied her passion for the art.

“I was really proud of myself,” she says.

Just before her studies at Parsons, Kravchuk met another person who would soon feel like home, too. Her now-husband, Nick, had been visiting Fort Myers from Boston where he was from, and the two immediately hit it off. They navigated a long-distance relationship while Kravchuk finished her studies, and she moved to Boston to be with Nick in 2004. She worked at a design firm there until the couple moved to San Diego in 2009. They were married in 2012 and Kravchuk worked in interior design sales for an international textile company for the following decade. Nick, a real estate professional and investor, was an integral partner in introducing Kravchuk to new clients here in San Diego, and, in 2020, she launched her firm, Adrienne Kravchuk Interior Design.

Her firm designs homes all over San Diego, but now primarily in Coronado. She loves that there are so many design styles here to work with, from new builds to cherished historic homes. One of her favorite aspects of working here is the family ties she sees. “I am constantly being pulled into generational moments on the island — creating new spaces for people who are rebuilding or reimagining their childhood homes — getting to flex my design muscles transitioning a home from one generation to the next is really special.”

Kravchuk’s personal style is what she would describe as “Ralph Lauren in the Hamptons: comfortable cognac distressed leathers, deep tones of paint hues like academic greens and navy blues, exposed weathered wooden beams, plaids, stripes, wide plank original flooring, cobblestone accents, walls of family photos, and lanterns everywhere.” She loves the “east coast preppy” vibe but also prides herself on being a chameleon for each project she takes on.

“Every space is different,” she says. “I love the science and chemistry behind creating good spaces.” She has designed everything from Tudor Revivals to Mid-Century Modern to Traditional Farmhouse. But no matter the aesthetic, Kravchuk keeps her designs rooted in the principles of what makes a house feel like home: warmth, comfort, and authenticity to what brings the people who live there joy.

For Kravchuk, that means her grandmother’s hand-knotted cable knit blanket, an antique western European chest from the 1700s she found while traveling, and an antique cow bell her father-inlaw discovered in New England. “I get lost in imagining all the history behind these things. They’re all very dear to me because they represent family, history, and special trips - often folded together,” she says. In the homes she designs, Kravchuk loves to blend the old and the new to create a space that’s special and unique to the people that live there. “Maybe that’s a piece of furniture that’s been passed down, a framed picture that invokes special memories, or a found item that simply brings you joy.

A harmonious home that is true to you is important to your happiness - and there are so many wonderful ways to create that in your space.”

“Your home is a place to feel held, especially when life gets hard,” says Kravchuk. She and Nick navigated more than a decade of painful loss as they hoped to build a family, but through it all they remained each other’s steadfast foundation. Today, they walk in gratitude for their life together, cherishing time with their beloved European Boxers, Hudson and Georgia, their close friends’ children, and their extended family. “Nick and I adore each other,” says Kravchuk. “How lucky am I,” she says, “that growing up I had a mom who felt like home, and now I have a husband who feels like it, too.”

“My mom would never wait to use the special silverware on ordinary days. She’d say ‘this is the special time, right now!’ I try to bring that mentality into all my designs — whatever you’re walking through, today is special, our life experiences and the people you share them with are special. I am so grateful to have had people that created spaces for me that reflect that, and the opportunity to create the same for others.”

estled within the creative corridors of Coronado High School is one of the finest ceramic studios in all of San Diego, where students have the rare opportunity to explore the ancient yet ever-evolving art of ceramics. Led by passionate educator Kelly Telebrico, the Advanced Ceramics class extends beyond a usual art course. It’s a transformative experience that teaches students to express themselves, embrace craftsmanship, and learn from both triumphs and mistakes.

Thanks to generous funding and support from the Coronado Schools Foundation (CSF), students have access to an extraordinary array of professional-grade tools and resources. The studio is fully outfitted with potter's wheels, slab rollers, extruders, clay mixers, and pugmills. It also boasts an impressive collection of four electric kilns and two gas kilns for advanced firing techniques. These tools, along with a full range of clay and glaze mixing equipment, allow students to explore nearly every traditional and contemporary technique in ceramics.

In this hands-on environment, students begin to develop their own artistic voice. The course is designed to build on foundational skills while challenging young artists with open-ended conceptual projects. They are exposed to historical and contemporary artists, and they are expected to take ownership of the studio, including kiln operations and clean-up responsibilities. This space that fosters creativity, community, and personal growth becomes a second home for many students.

For Ms. Telebrico, moments of joy, laughter, and even tears fill her memories. “One day during my advanced class, a song from the ’70s came on, and for no reason, the whole class started singing together while working,” she recalls. “It was so magical I started crying. This is my dream — to inspire kids to create with their hands in a place where they feel safe and free.”

She also speaks to the deeply rewarding and therapeutic nature of ceramics. "We joke that ceramics is rehab for brain rot. It's analog, hands-on, and teaches kids to slow down and problem solve. You can’t use AI to throw a pot on the wheel," she laughs. With studies increasingly pointing to the benefits of tactile creation in improving mental health and attention span, the class offers students far more than just an elective credit.

The Advanced Ceramics course is a testament to what can happen when young minds are given the tools, space, and encouragement to create. It is also a shining example of the impact of community support through organizations like CSF. The Ceramics students and Coronado Schools Foundation proudly partnered to bring both visibility and artistry to the 2025 Secret Garden Gala at the Hotel del Coronado. In the weeks leading up to the event, students designed and created one-of-a-kind ceramic vases that served as the centerpiece for every table.

These remarkable pieces not only elevated the aesthetic of the gala but also sparked conversation and admiration throughout the evening. More importantly, they offered guests a tangible reminder of the extraordinary talent our students possess and what they can achieve when they are given the resources, opportunities, and creative space they deserve.

hanksgiving morning in Coronado begins the same way for hundreds of families each year: lacing up running shoes, bundling the kids into strollers, and heading toward the bay. This year was no different, as more than 1,200 participants gathered at Tidelands Park for the 12th Annual Coronado Turkey Trot, presented by the Coronado Unit of the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary.

The 5K brought together locals and holiday visitors alike, all ready to kick off their celebration with fresh air, fitness, and a whole lot of fun. With the skyline glimmering in the early morning light and festive turkey hats dotting the course, the Thanksgiving spirit was undeniable.

But the Turkey Trot is more than a great start to the holiday. It is a tradition rooted in giving back, one that makes a meaningful impact on children and families across Southern California.

Meet Elizabeth Lewis: Our 2025 Race Ambassador Each year, the Turkey Trot honors an ambassador whose journey reflects the spirit of the event. This year, that honor goes to Elizabeth Lewis, a shining example of resilience and determination.

Diagnosed at age three with Perthes Disease, a rare condition affecting blood flow to the hip, Elizabeth faced limitations most children never imagine. After years of treatment and five major surgeries, she regained strength and mobility thanks to her perseverance and the expert care of Rady Children’s Hospital’s Orthopedics and Scoliosis Center.

Today, she’s thriving as a multi-sport athlete and high school senior at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace.

Elizabeth joined us on race morning to share her inspiring story before the start, and her family provided the celebratory pies awarded to our top finishers—a full-circle moment for an athlete who once wasn’t able to run at all.

Her journey is a powerful reminder of the impact this event makes, one stride at a time.

Running With Purpose All net proceeds from the 2025 Coronado Turkey Trot benefited the Orthopedics and Scoliosis Center at Rady Children’s Hospital, the same department that supported Elizabeth throughout her journey.

Participants weren’t just running a 5K. They were helping ensure more children can walk, run, jump, play, and grow with strength, confidence, and hope.

Cinematic Legacy Continues — Heading Into Year 11 of CIFF As the calendar turns to 2026, the Coronado Island Film Festival looks back on a milestone 10th anniversary — and forward to a new year of storytelling, connection and opportunity. With nearly 10,000 tickets sold and reserved, films showing across six screens during five magical days in early November, the festival once again proved how deeply the island of Coronado continues to resonate with cinema lovers.

Reaching the tenth anniversary was everything and more than I ever dreamed.

This festival has grown into the vision I imagined in 2019, shaped by the passion of our filmmakers, our community, and everyone who believes in the power and art of cinematic storytelling.

2025 Highlights — Community, Culinary & Cinema The festival had the best year yet in 2025 and continued to shake up the footprint.

One of the freshest additions to this year’s lineup was the inaugural Scenes & Sips: a vibrant self-guided walking tour down Orange Avenue, rebranded as the “Avenue of the Stars,” during the 5-day festival when CIFF and the Rotary Club lay down on the sidewalk stars. where film-goers sipped, tasted, and mingled with participating restaurants, local retailers and the Coronado Historic Center. The sidewalks filled with chatter, movie trivia, clinking glasses and the gleam of festival energy — a true merging of community, commerce and cinematic spirit.

Meanwhile, the move of the elegant Leonard Maltin Industry Tribute Awards Gala to mid-week, Wednesday evening was a game changer for the festival. By shifting the gala early in the week, CIFF expanded industry panels, giving top editorial and publishing houses the time and flexibility to attend premieres, moderate sessions, and deepen engagement with filmmakers and content creators.

The festival’s Culinary Cinema Series returned with savory flavor, powered by renewed partnerships with the local food powerhouses — including the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival, Edible Magazine, celebrity and regional chefs, including celebrated local filmmaker Eric Wolfinger, and Chef Lisa Dahl (Lisa Dahl: Blessed by Grace) and a documentary journalist covering the 20th anniversary of the Tijuana Culinary Institute — served up mouth-watering pairings, lively conversation, and a delicious bridge between film and food culture.

On the screen, CIFF’s 2025 season was nothing short of dazzling: 27 San Diego premieres, a world premiere, multiple West Coast premieres, major studio films, and an expanded ShortsFest featuring around 80 short films.

The festival continued its tradition of honoring service — with the “Focus on Valor” block spotlighting service members, veterans and their stories. Free screenings in the Winn Room at the Coronado Public Library, underwritten by the The Auen Foundation, offered access to older community members, military families, and seniors in the spirit of connection and accessibility to the festival.

All told, audiences got first-looks at films with serious Oscar potential and critical buzz — closing out a festival that felt like both a celebration and a launching pad.

Tribute Honorees — Celebrating a Decade of Storytelling At the heart of the 10th-anniversary Gala were six distinguished honorees whose craftsmanship and legacy embody what CIFF stands for: vision, artistry, and enduring impact.

• Beau Bridges — honored with the Legacy Award. A legendary actor, director and producer whose career spans decades, Bridges has appeared in acclaimed works including The Descendants, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Jerry Maguire and more.

• Austin Kolodney — received the ScreenCraft Award. Kolodney is the screenwriter behind the festival’s opening film, Dead Man’s Wire.

• Delroy Lindo — took home the Leonard Maltin Award, honored for his performance in the film Sinners.

• Heidi Moneymaker — recognized with the Trailblazer Award for her groundbreaking work as a stunt professional on major blockbusters including the Marvel films.

• Deborah L. Scott — honored with the Artistry in Film Award, notably for her costume design work on Avatar: Fire and Ash. • Adam Smalley — received the Transcendent Award in recognition of his enduring contributions as a music editor.

These honorees — some icons, others rising names — remind us that the art of filmmaking is an eclectic ecosystem of talent, woven by actors, writers, designers, editors, stunt artists and more. On that elegant November night at the historic Hotel del Coronado, CIFF celebrated them all under the iconic crown chandeliers.

Spotlight on American Solitaire — A Powerful World Premiere A standout on the 2025 slate was American Solitaire, the worldpremiere narrative feature from first-time feature director (and writer) Aaron Davidman.

Set in the fraught context of post-service life, American Solitaire stars Joshua Close as Slinger — a U.S. soldier returning from deployment and confronting the complexities of gun violence in civilian America. Produced by a team that includes Davidman along with Dylan Kussman and Close himself, with executive production by Lisa Bruce and David Oyelowo, the film was lauded as “a quiet movie for a noisy time” by Director Aaron Davidman. .

Looking Ahead — Submissions, Screenwriting & Year 11 As we look toward 2026, CIFF is already setting the stage for what comes next. Submissions for films — and entries for the CIFF Screenwriting Competition — will open on January 5th, inviting storytellers far and wide to join the festival’s ongoing creative journey.

With ten years under its belt, CIFF begins its eleventh year emboldened by legacy, fueled by community, and alive with the promise of new voices. Secrets Before Shelf Date: A Pre-Pub Launch with Kaira Rouda

Learn and Grow Beginning Jan. 7 and continuing each Wednesday through March 11, Poetry for the People returns to the library. This year’s course will focus on poems written by state poet laureates. The responsibility of a State Poet Laureate is essentially the same as the US Poets Laureate: “to make public appearances at poetry readings or literary events and to promote awareness of poetry." Each year, Poetry for the People focuses on a different topic, with past courses having focused on US Poet Laureates, Indigenous Poetry, the American West, and more. Chuck Kamar, who leads the course, will guide all attendees through the workshop. Class members are encouraged to contribute their ideas and perceptions of the poems, but a background in poetry is not necessary! Attend one class or all of them, but be prepared to find inspiration in the powerful poetry at hand.

Book Clubs!

Check out the Library’s book club lineup for January: Discover how calm, focus, and creativity come together in a four-part class on mindfulness taught by UCSD’s Jamie Pineda. A professor of cognitive science and neuroscience, Pineda has worked extensively on the mind-brain relationships and the benefits of mindfulness.

Each session will include simple techniques such as guided breathing, sensory awareness, and reflective reading designed to promote the benefits of practicing mindfulness and being a mindful reader. Perfect for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. Sessions begin weekly on Sundays starting Jan. 4.

With all those events, you might think that’s all that’s happening at the library in January.

But with events for kids like Winnie the Pooh’s Birthday Party (Jan. 16), concerts for all ages featuring the Brazilian group Villa Lobos (Jan. 9, 16, and 30), an Art Gala featuring local student artists (Jan. 30), and the opening of the San Diego Potters Guild Exhibit (Jan. 25), there’s never a quiet day at the library.
