Since 1967, Crown Center for Senior Living has been a cornerstone of support and connection for older adults. What began as a single building with a simple yet profound mission—to provide affordable housing for older adults — has grown into a vibrant community. Today, we proudly serve seniors of all income levels through affordable housing and open, welcoming and innovative programs that combat isolation and foster well-being.
As we look to the future, we are inspired by the vision of our founders and are ready to meet the growing needs of our community. We are embarking on Phase II of our building project, which includes the construction of a 68-unit apartment building and renovations to our Weinberg Building. Additional priorities include growing our endowment and enhancing our Circle@Crown Cafe.
“The result of this project is a prime example of what an affordable senior housing community should be, and we have no doubt the space will meet the needs of our residents and community members for years to come.”
Andy Thorp Executive Director Crown Center for Senior Living
To achieve these goals, we have launched the A Place to Call Home Campaign that will further transform our community and the lives of those we serve, under the leadership of campaign chairs Lauren and Darryl Sagel.
To help meet our mission, qualifying donors may maximize their contributions by utilizing Missouri Affordable Housing Assistance Program (AHAP) credits, which offer a 55% state tax credit to eligible donors making gifts for the construction prior to April 30, 2026.
With the caring and generous support from our community and region, older adults can live, learn, and connect in a caring environment helping to honor Jewish values and tradition. Please join us in creating more places to call home.
For more information on applying for tax credits and ways to give to A Place to Call Home, please contact Executive Director, Andy Thorp, at athorp@crowncenterstl.org or Katie Garland, Advancement and Partnerships Director, at kgarland@crowncenterstl.org.
Construction is expected to begin in the Summer of 2025 with completion anticipated by Fall of 2026.

A Day in the Life at Crown: Stories from Our Community
Beginning each morning, every hour at Crown Center is filled with opportunity. Whether gathering with friends, exploring new interests, or simply enjoying the day, our residents make the most of every hour. Join us as we take a look at the rhythm of daily life in our Crown community.
9:00 AM A Relaxing Start
Iva Mahr typically starts her day enjoying a fresh cup of coffee with friends in the Circle@Crown Cafe. On Fridays, she meets friends and neighbors in Crown’s JCA Community Room for coffee and homemade baked goods. Since Iva moved to Crown Center in 1999, she has enjoyed starting her mornings with her friends – old and new.
11:00 AM Taking Volunteering to the Next Level
Mary Riley’s days are filled with volunteer opportunities that provide nourishment to her neighbors at Crown Center. Twice a week, Mary delivers Crown’s “Meals on Wheels” freshly prepared kosher meals to fellow residents. Numbers may vary but she can deliver up to 75 meals at a time. She also takes it upon herself to check in with residents who she hasn’t seen recently, exemplifying what it means to be part of our community.
5:00 PM Independent Living Offers Options
Attractive and usable spaces throughout the building provide opportunities for Yunlong Zhu and ShiFang Qi to enjoy retirement activities that keep the brain fresh like playing games of mahjong with friends. While some residents prefer to be social, others prefer the privacy of their apartments. Crown offers the opportunity for both.
10:00 AM Out
and About
Barbara and Neal Polsky moved to Crown in 2023. An active couple always on the go, they start their days tackling errands and to-do lists. While they are still adjusting to their new home, Barbara began taking Crown’s cooking classes and Neal, an avid gardener, is enjoying getting his hands dirty with programs brought to Crown by the Missouri Botanical Garden.
1:00 PM
Taking Time to Stay Active
Sophia Zhukova moved to Crown Center in 2023. While Russian is her primary language, her friendly smile encourages friendships with Crown’s residents from all over the world. Twice a week, Sophia and friends attend fitness classes in Crown’s new, brightly lit Weinberg Wellness Center. While she prefers to stay safely seated during the classes, she has noticed that she is feeling healthier and has more energy to do the things she loves – like spending time with friends.
3:00 PM
Learning Doesn’t End at Retirement
Debbie Blackwell loves that as a resident of Crown Center, she’s able to always learn something new — whether it’s cooking in Crown’s Culinary Studio or creating art. Opportunities for learning are vast with program partnerships including Oasis, Repertory Theater of St. Louis and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. The possibilities for learning are great.
Every hour of every day, we’re grateful for your support so our residents can live where compassion, community and care intersect. Thank you for your support.
Thank you to our 2024 Donors
Your contribution directly benefits older adults in our community.

Crown Center Proudly Hosted Coro Fellows
THE CORO FELLOWS PROGRAM,
which is offered through UMSL’s Community Innovation and Action Center (CIAC), enables experiential learning and practical application of skills in the St. Louis region. Through interactions with private, public and nonprofit decision-makers, the program helps further develop the Fellows’ critical thinking, decisionmaking, analytical, governance, and leadership skills. The Fellows worked with Crown Center to support resident needs assessments through surveys and focus groups on programs and services which culminated in a presentation of data and recommendations to the Crown Center’s Programs and Services Committee.
