through the years
The Delcrest Apartment Building opens 1967 to provide affordable housing for seniors. Weinberg Building built, with 118 one-bedroom apartments – bringing the total number of affordable senior housing units to 244. Delcrest Apartments are renamed the Tallin Building.
1995
The Crown Center, Inc. (Gladys & Henry Crown Center for Senior Living) was established as a third non-profit entity to deliver life enhancing programs and social services to residents and area seniors.

Crown leadership undertook strategic planning process resulting in focus 2000 as a social service agency providing housing and supportive services. Resident & Community Service Department established, 2008 increasing the number of professional social workers on staff. partnerships established with Oasis, COCA, Gateway Greening, 2013 Program University City Library. Partnerships strengthened with Washington University, AW Health Care, RPI, and Royal Banks of Missouri.
Original, fifty-year HUD loan on 2014 Delcrest/Tallin Building paid in full. Circle@Crown Project undertaken as community center role expands. Initiatives include establishing a culinary studio, comunity gardens, greenhouse and fitness center.

Circle@Crown Cafe opens, serving fresh, reasonably priced, kosher, dairy breakfast and lunch items, and serving as a community gathering place.

receives Federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits to undertake 2020 Crown replacement of the Tallin building and preserve affordable senior housing. begins on Crown Center Phase I 2022 Construction and Staenberg Commons project.

Honor thy father and thy mother. At Crown Center this commandment is front of mind in all that we do. I often think of my parents when I’m at Crown Center. Sometimes it’s because residents will remind me they knew them when they were young. Sometimes I’ll walk into the café or culinary studio and remember my mother cooking for a gathering at Temple or baking to support an organization. I’ll have the privilege of welcoming residents and neighborhood friends to a Crown program and I can imagine my father standing in the back of the group, arms crossed, nodding his approval. I honor the memory of my parents by following their example of giving back to the community. I honor them by contributing to the supportive, stimulating community of older adults at Crown Center. I am grateful to be a part of the leadership of this extraordinary community that has the dignity and well-being of residents as its highest priority.

“In 2021, I began working out through a virtual Oasis class, ‘Exercise for Life.’ It has been a lifesaver, a lifeline that kept me going with strength, balance and flexibility. It’s very good to get up and off the couch.” – Sue H.
Though 2021 brought continued challenges for bringing people together safely, Crown adapted and innovated. “Crown Cares” home delivered gift packages continued, as did access to virtual programming. New initiatives included “Patio Performances” featuring outdoor concerts and fitness classes, and creating a CCTV (closed-circuit TV station) for residents. Smaller group events that increased social interactions included “Viewing Parties” of SLSO concerts, and discussion groups utilizing audio technology devices that significantly enhanced in-person communication.

Crown Center’s Social Services and Meal Program
I had some unexpected medical expenses and expressed my concerns about the cost. Crown’s social worker secured a pharmacy gift card to help relieve some of the worry. – Crown Resident
Crown’s professional social work staff continued to assist clients to successfully meet the challenges of aging. We remain focused on those who are most vulnerable, with scarce financial resources. Services included Crown’s Kosher Meals on Wheels program, supportive counseling, crisis intervention, assistance accessing benefits, and connection to community resources.

Crown’s portfolio of support includes outstanding individuals as well as diversified revenue streams. Our Board of Directors provides bold and active leadership, navigating the new normal. Direct service volunteers returned in force, helping deliver nutrition via their essential work in the Circle@Crown Cafe and Kosher Meals on Wheels program.

and a Place to Live and Gather
Crown Center stands alone in St. Louis. There are no other senior living communities that offer our breadth of services at a low-barrier cost while uniquely located in a walkable neighborhood setting and firmly anchored in the Jewish community. Seniors need comprehensive, community-based services to thrive. Crown needs versatile, larger and more accessible space to deliver services to a vulnerable group of older adults. Crown is undertaking a crucial capital project to continue to meet these needs for the next generation of seniors. • The original 10-story Tallin Building has become functionally obsolete, and will be replaced with two low-rise buildings on the current site. The project is being undertaken in phases so that no older adults are displaced. • Staenberg Commons, a Community Living Center, will be built to expand the lifeenhancing programs and services offered. We are grateful for the generous support of individuals and organizations that are making the project a reality.
