What is the name of the game?

The Life of Crown is a campaign to engage alumni and friends of Crown with the fun facts of the college. It was launched in October 2019. For 12 weeks, emails were sent with new facts about student events, operating expenses, emeriti updates, a coffee shop update — all aspects of the college. Each week, an average of 1600 individuals opened the emails.

Raising funds for Crown’s operating costs was part of the campaign.

A goal of $400,000 was set, and we are close to achieving it. As of January 31, we have raised $377,809!

This issue of The Bridge is dedicated to The Life of Crown — our programs, our campus, our alumni, and our supporters. There are so many pieces that contribute to making this college great. And of course, they all come as blessings from God. Thank you for being part of Life of Crown.

WHAT’S NEW AT CROWN? Crown College is partnering with the College of Missionary Aviation to provide students with an accredited degree through Crown. The College of Missionary Aviation is located in Keystone Heights, Florida. It is a Christian school that educates and trains pilots for the mission field. Through partnering with Crown, students can now earn a Bachelor’s degree in Global and Cultural Studies while gaining their pilot’s training.

GRADUATE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM In August 2019, Crown launched a Graduate Internship Program for individuals interested in a career in higher education. This is how the program works: • Students enroll in one of the Master’s programs offered by Crown, adding a concentration in higher education.

• They have leadership roles in residence life, student engagement, or intramural sports.

• The internship marries theory with practice, allowing Graduate Interns to gain higher education experience while guided by industry professionals.

• As a cohort, they learn from one another, each bringing a unique perspective from his or her undergraduate experience. Also, Graduate Interns visit other colleges to share best practices.

ALUMNI OF THE YEAR Melissa MacDonald (’03) is Crown’s 2019 Alumni of the Year.

Melissa’s specialty is in children’s ministry, however, she also speaks on leadership, team building, and spiritual development.

She’s currently an independent contractor serving The Alliance, as well as other denominations and organizations, and is the Board Vice President for the International Network of Children’s Ministry. Her speaking, writing, and consulting are in demand in the U.S. and abroad.

Melissa and her husband, Luis, live in southwest Iowa where they are actively involved in their local church.

OUR STUDENTS MEN’S BASKETBALL Senior forward Tim Wendel isn’t your typical star basketball player. The son of C&MA missionaries, Wendel grew up in Madrid, Spain, spending his high school years in Montevideo, Uruguay. He played as an amateur athlete for Club Malvin, where the 6’6” forward learned a modern style of basketball, stretching the floor with an elite three-point shooting ability.

The reigning Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year has accumulated many team and conference awards while navigating clinicals as a nursing major. He aspires to be an orthopedic nurse with plans to attend nurse practitioner school in the future.

“It’s definitely challenging, and you have to be disciplined,” said Wendel. “At Crown, I’ve had great teachers, great coaches that have helped work with me. It’s STUDENTathlete, so studies always come first.”

At Crown College, athletes are given a chance to play their sport while being enrolled in any academic program, even taking courses that take up a considerable amount of time. Crown College supports student-athletes who not only excel in their sport but also in rigorous coursework.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY On and off the course, the Crown Women’s Cross Country team had a remarkable 2019 season, achieving program bests on the course and in the classroom. The team ended the season with a 3.82 GPA, the best of any team in the NCAA-era history of Crown College Athletics. It can be a challenging task to excel both academically and athletically, but that is exactly what Head Coach Bill Braunger’s team has done during their 2019 campaign.

“That’s the type of student we bring in, student-athletes that want to do well both in cross country and in the classroom,” said Braunger. “Distance runners tend to be good students. The determination required to be a distance runner carries over to the classroom. I’m proud of the team and their hard work this season.”

Coach Braunger has a knack for finding women to fit his program and has had incredible success in southern Minnesota

as the St. Peter native uses his roots to scout talent from the region. His entire women’s team this season was from the southern area of the state with hometowns of Le Sueur, Mankato, Hanska, Spring Valley, Waseca, Waterville, and Worthington all featured on the team’s roster.

First-year runner Abbe Dufault (Waseca, MN) led the team throughout the season, winning two races, and was named to the UMAC All-Conference First Team. Dufault led the team to a fourth-place finish in the conference as she set an institutional record, placing second in the UMAC Championship. This is the first time the Storm had bested five opponents in that meet. Coach Braunger and his team look to return several key runners and continue to compete for a conference championship.

WE THREE KINGS STUDENTS In the Bible, three Magi traveled far in search of the child, born king of the Jews. They sought help from others on their long journey, as they followed the star. They carried gifts to give to the child. These gifts helped Mary and Joseph on their new journey.

Recently, we interviewed three international students.

Their journeys have several parallels to the Magi story.

The students are from three countries: Dominican Republic, Republic of Congo, and Laos. Like the Magi, these students have traveled a long distance — to a foreign land. They needed to learn English to even have the opportunity to study in the United States. And in the States, they came as strangers, knowing no one.

The students did not have a star leading them to Crown College, but they each had a “supporter” to encourage and guide them. For Maddey from the Dominican Republic, this was an American Pastor; for Daniel from the Congo, it was an American businessman who had

grown up in the Congo; and for Tay from Laos, it was a few American and Australian women who started a mission in Laos.

Upon graduation, these students will bless others.

Maddey plans to use her business and accounting degree in an organization that helps people in the Dominican Republic. Daniel plans to work for a medical research company to reduce diseases in the Congo. And Tay will return to Laos to start an English school to help others like she was helped.

Three students are braving an incredible journey to ultimately impact their countries for God. All three say they couldn’t be doing this without other Christians that supported them.

We have 400+ other students on our campus preparing to make impacts for good in the world. We thank you for being their supporters!

OUR ALUMNI A MILE IN THEIR SHOES Marcus Corey was eligible to take a sabbatical from work. He and his wife, Heidi, are both Crown alumni, graduating in 2005. They have three children — Abishai, age 12; Hadassah, age 10; and Jesse, age 8. With five months of rest in front of them, one would imagine they were thinking of Disney World or New York… but not the Corey family!

As a Chaplain at Loon Mountain Ski Resort in Lincoln, New Hampshire, Marcus is building relationships continually. The Corey Family runs Loon Mountain Ministry, which hosts experiential, non-denominational worship services at the summit of beautiful Loon Mountain. With so much public ministry, Marcus and Heidi are passionate advocates of “Five Time,” when their family gets away to spend time with each other, and they wanted the upcoming sabbatical to be a chance to grow closer to each other and to God. Through a series of experiences, people, promptings, and prayers that only God can orchestrate, they decided to hike the historic Appalachian Trail as a family. The Appalachian Trail is not for wimps! It is roughly 2,200 miles, spanning fourteen U.S. states. It is estimated you put one foot in front of the other five million times if you hike the whole trail. The hiker will gain and lose over 515,000 feet of elevation during the trek, and the climate changes can be drastic.

She said they started their days with breakfast and packing up. The kids took ownership of trail responsibilities, doing jobs like washing dishes, packing up for the day, or filtering water. The first 30 minutes of walking was always spent in silence, time to talk with God. This increased to 60 minutes, and the whole family really cherished this time to be alone with their Heavenly Father!

The family motto was, “Everyone has a story worth listening to, and you can minister to people when you know their story.” The kids embraced the adventure of interviewing others on the trail to hear where they came from and how they got there. When things got tough — rain and soaking wet clothes, itchy bug bites, sore muscles, aching feet — the family read through blogs of other hikers who pushed through their trials. Marcus was always quick to remind them, “God’s not done with us yet.” Heidi said there were places along the trail where they could’ve quit, but the Corey kids were adamant about finishing.

All total, the Corey family hiked 136 days, 16 miles per day on average. They didn’t miss a single day of walking due to illness or injury. They only took 8 “Zero days”, meaning zero miles hiking that day, during the whole trip! Collectively, they went through 19 pairs of shoes and traveled 2,192 miles.

On April 1, 2019, Marcus, Heidi, and their children began the journey. Marcus’ parents, Ron and Cyndi Corey, followed along the main roads in their RV. They had food and water onboard and were there when Marcus and his family emerged from the wooded trail.

The plan was to hike “in the woods” for 2 or 3 days at a time. Each member of the family had a large pack to carry on their backs, and would haul food, shelter, clothing, and water. When they came out of the woods, Ron and Cyndi helped with laundry and repacking supplies, and the family could take showers and rest.

In addition to the incredible bonding experience and spiritual growth, the Corey family hiked the Appalachian Trail to raise support for Sole Hope, an organization that treats people in Uganda from a crippling parasite called jiggers. This invasive parasite burrows into the feet and multiplies rapidly. The result is infection, pain, and itching, leaving the victim unable to walk. Worst of all, due to widespread cultural beliefs, people infested with jiggers are often shunned from their community.

Heidi said they started off traveling 8 miles per day the first week, increasing to 20 miles per day by the end of the trip. I asked Heidi what each day was like.

OUR ALUMNI HOW TO THRIVE IN WORSHIP ARTS — AND LEADERSHIP Excerpts from an interview between alumnus Jeff Moser and Chyelle Dvorak, a senior at Crown College.

Jeff was asked to share his insight on what it takes to thrive in worship arts — and in leadership! Here are his thoughts: 1. Learn to be well-rounded Working in Worship Arts isn’t completely a creative job. There are a variety of tasks that are important to do well. Try to learn new skills to make you well-rounded in your capabilities.

2. Be a student of the people you aspire to be like Having a mentor who can help your heart grow for Jesus and help you excel in your job is one of the most important steps to becoming a great leader.

3. Expect the unexpected There’s only so much you can learn by reading. You need experience to prepare you for things that books don’t!

4. Learn how to work on a team and lead a team “Leading cool worship songs isn’t enough,” says Moser. “There’s a strong collective that I want to embrace with my team.” Helping the team grow through relationship building and by individual leadership experiences is important.

5. Remember the purpose of your job “I ask myself and my team, ‘Did the atmosphere set the stage for people to grow closer to Christ?’“says Moser. Put yourself in the shoes of the people coming to the service.

6. Point people to God and not to yourself When you’re in a role that separates you from others, the odds are higher for accidentally slipping into a celebrity complex. Two things you can do to combat this unintended result: be accessible and visible. “Throw a frisbee on the front lawn with people’s kids. Hold the doors open as people leave. We are in this to learn about Jesus together, so how can we share this walk with each other? It’s a journey, and we’re all in the same race.”

Jeff Moser (‘10) is the Creative Art Pastor/ Executive Producer at Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Jeff grew up in Minnesota and met his wife, Erin, at Crown College. They were married in 2010 and now live in Plymouth with their toddler son, Reese.

Lambert (’51) and Doris (Geist, ‘52) Anderson. The Andersons are back in Tucson after spending six months in Peru working under Wycliffe Bible Translators to translate the Scriptures for the Ticuna people, a tribal group of 50,000 people who live along the Amazon River in Peru, Colombia and Brazil.

The translation was started in 1953, and a complete Ticuna Bible should be published soon.

Dick Colenso (’57) and his wife Louise, celebrated their 63rd year of ministry and 69 years of marriage. They will always remember and rejoice in the faithfulness of our Lord as married students (with three children) at St. Paul Bible College.

1980’S Troy (’88) and Deana (Sedler, ’87) Bondy led a family team in planting over 100 plants to beautify Faith Village. (Troy and Deanna, Mark (’12) and Lindsay (Bondy, ’13) Wiggins, Timon (’16) and Megan (Bondy,’15) Sahlstrom, Josiah Bondy (’17), Travis Bondy (’19) and Emma Ferrando (’21)).

Dr. Haley Goranson Jacob (’05) was recently named as one of The Top 10 New or Lesser Known Female Theologians Worth Knowing. She did her Ph.D. at the University of St. Andrews and now teaches at Whitworth University in Washington state.

Sara Moore (Spaulding, ’08) received 1st place in investigative reporting and social issues categories among the largest weekly newspapers at the 2019 Minnesota Newspaper Association conference. She received 2nd place for her work at the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists 2019 banquet. Her investigative work was on trafficking. She also published a children’s book, The Spike Cream Woods.

2010’S Correction: Michelle Pratt (Malcore, ‘15) married Jakob Pratt on January 12, 2019 but we wrongly printed that they were expecting their first child.

Scott Toenges (’83) is the department chair of Christian Studies at The First Academy in Orlando, Florida. He was recently voted the Christian Educator of the Year. He is also an adjunct professor at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Mark (’12) and Lindsay (Bondy, ’13) Wiggins have three future Crownies! Ethan (4), Deacon (2) and Chloe (8 months).

DEATHS Susan Hanaford (‘60) died August 12, 2019 in Monticello, Minnesota. She faithfully served in several Christian organizations throughout her lifetime.

Renee Young (‘86) died August 22, 2019. Renee was working with the Evangelical Free Church in Brooklyn, New York as a missionary for immigrants.

Reverend Jack Waite (‘50) died June 9, 2019. He served as a pastor for several churches in Maryland and as a missionary to Indonesia.
